- Learn how to paint sea urchins with watercolor. In this step-by-step tutorial, I’ll show you three tools to apply masking fluid to create patterns on the urchins. You’ll learn a fun wet-on-wet technique to let your paint colors blend on the paper. You’ll also learn how to use a negative painting technique to build up the shadows and define the individual sea urchins. This painting style would also be gorgeous for watercolor sea shells.

Love this tutorial! You create such beautiful paintings!
Thanks so much 😊
Amazing! Loving your tutorials ❤
Thank you so much!!
I would love to buy a video tutorial for that beautiful, pastel rainbow starfish picture that is on the cover of your masking guide!
Stay tuned…I’m working on a masking fluid course all about how to do paintings like that!
Absolutely stunning! Can't wait to have a go at this. Thank you.
Thank you. Have fun!
I really enjoyed doing the sand dollars, so I’m looking forward to trying this too. Thanks for such clear & instructive tutorials 😊
Yay! I’m glad you’re enjoying these.
What a great tutorial!!❤
Thank you! 😊
Hi, this is a beautiful tutorial, I've tried it a couple of times and my masking fluid skills are a bit disappointing . I'm very impressed with your smooth masking fluid lines. I'll keep at it and expect I'll get better. I really like your style!
Oh no. Is your masking fluid new? Old bottles can get clumpy or thick. Some brands are more fluid than others. I like the Pebeo for that reason.
@@JackieHernandezWatercolor it's new masking fluid but I'm not good at handling it, I'll keep working on it. The process is fun and after time practicing I'm sure I will get better with it. I really like using it ,the effect is so cool.
Hi, i am currently working on you sand dollar tutorial, its great!
Where eould i be able to get plexiglass?
I order plexiglass from Amazon or Blick Arts. I like the 1/4” thick variety. I recommend ordering it about 1-2” larger than your paper, so there’s room to tape. I have a few 12x12” panels and a 6x8” panel for smaller 5x7” paper. Before plexiglass, I taped my paper to a regular clipboard. That’s a good way to start, but the plexiglass is waterproof so the paper doesn’t dry out as fast as on the clipboard. Hope that helps!
If you use Schmincke masking fluid you don’t have to protect your brush. It washes off with water.
Interesting. I’ll have to try that one.
Where do I find the line drawing?
