What a surprise, John!!! I had a small part in The Father Knows Best Reunion, I believe I worked 3 or 4 days and it was heaven... I had a scene where director Marc Daniels asked me to whistle at Robert Young and Jane Wyatt..who were in the midst of an embrace, it was one of those whistles where you place your fingers between your teeth and blow....well I tried, but after 2 failed takes I just couldn't do it....Billy who was standing by ran over to me, laid down on the ground and shouted to the director "I can do it for John!" And so, for Take three I faked it as Billy let out with a whistle you could hear in Oxnard! It worked, and we all had a good laugh. During the shoot I had lunches with the 'kids'' and many wonderful chats the 'adults' Jane Wyatt and Bob Young. It was like being with family. Throughout the years (48 to be exact) I hoped to run into Bill again, but that never happened, until now -- well, it was wonderful, thrilling, and heart-warming to come across your interview today. Bill is a beautiful soul, what a joy to see him again.
So glad you saw the interview! What a terrible story about your experience with the cast and Billy in particular, just loved it. Hope you caught both episodes of my interview with Billy as well❤️
I used to watch Father Knows Best in reruns when I was a kid. I liked the feel the show had of a simpler time and it's great to see Billy Gray looking so good and still so sharp. I think that was one of the only TV shows that all the main characters lived for so long after the show ended, almost 40 years after the show ended when Robert Young passed away and Jane Wyatt about eight years after that. Nice to know the three actors that played the kids are all still alive today. Another great interview.
What a great interview and Billy is a genuine good person he's been thru alot and came out beautifully sincerely modest and decent thanks for all the memories
Wow! "The day the Earth Stood Still" One of Billy's most memorable parts that was capitative everyone. He played perfect to the innocent of such a good movie.
What a great catch for an interview. Good to see Billy doing so well. I can see Bud’s face and he does sound the same. Could listen to his stories and memories all day.

My pleasure Carmen, hope you become a subscriber! I think you would love the other interviews on my That’s Classic! channel. By the way, I just met with Billy and recorded another episode where he answers fan questions, hopefully will release it soon😀
I agree with Billy’s last part of the interview, I saw this show thought what a perfect family I didn’t know could exist and was shocked it didn’t get more recognition especially Billy for how amazing he was at acting and how gorgeous he was, but the whole cast was perfect.
No doubt the family was pretty close to perfect. If you have a question for Billy let me know as I am planning on doing an interview this week with him to answer fan questions.
Really enjoyed this conversation with Billy Gray! I clicked on it as soon as it popped up and watched both parts back to back. Looks great, still has that great smile.
Billy is so underrated as an actor. I am going to be doing a second interview with him to answer fan questions later this week. If you have one send it to me.
Fantastic interview! Glad to see that Billy is in good health considering the health problem(s) he mentioned. For any other fans who are interested - Billy has an official website where you can contact him via his email. I emailed him 2 or 3 times and he always responded quickly! Like you did, I also asked him who he disliked working with and he told me the same two people - Mowbray and Bracken. He said that FKB guest-star Greer Garson was wonderful and she had on an enormous diamond ring.
I loved watching Billy Gray in "Father Knows Best" when I was a little girl. He was such a character in that show and in all the movies he was in. I also enjoyed seeing him in Doris Day movies, where his character was a cheeky BUD! He brought so much happiness in his movies and always played the lovable boy and young man. He was not only a great actor but also a humble and smart man, as he was an inventor as well. "Father Knows Best" was a fantastic show for families. I wish there were more shows like that nowadays as they could bring stability to future generations. Despite many actors, especially young ones, suffering after they stopped working, Billy seemed to have handled life well even after he stopped acting, thanks to his great-mother and his other interests. I know my comment is long, but I just had to mention how wonderful it was to see him. Please let him know that his acting brought so much happiness to the public, and we loved all the characters he portrayed because they all had a bit of BUD in them & that's a good thing because BUD was a SIMPATICO! A character who we loved.
Great interview with Billy Gray, really like your interviews. I'm going to share my story with Mr. Gray. Thanks for all your acting performances, Bill Gray, and your creativity, in one setting or another. People used to say to me, "Why do you watch that TV show, that's for kids," but I knew somehow I was witnessing a special personality. I didn't know if you were going to prove out as an actor and I was pulling for you, but it is clear you solved it by not ceasing being creative.
YES! Although Billy 'Bud" Gray is a race car rebel we see he is 'incredibly intelligent, incredibly smart' and it can't be said he didn't go Hollywood, at least a bit. I like that he is so low key, thoughtful, patient with his interviewer(!) and nice. Enlightening. I have enjoyed this and been surprised so much. Grade: A+
I have never heard a young actor pan an on set schoolhouse situation. In contrast, most child stars claim it gave them the best education. I would think there would be a real concentration problem. So Sara Gilbert flees to Princeton...
Excellent interview. I've always enjoyed FKB, but the episode revolving around Bud's shortwave radio strikes me as utterly classic tv. Oh my, I just found it on TH-cam. I'll watch it after the second half of this interview.
Mr. Gray is correct about Gordon MacRae. I saw him at a celebrity golf tournament around 1977. I was a kid at the time and had no idea who he was. But my mother had been a fan since "Oklahoma!" and said she has had a crush on him until seeing him that day. I won't go into the details, but that was the first time I had ever seen an inebriated person. And he clearly was, and on full public display. It was really a sad thing to see. On a happier note, Mr. Gray looks and sounds fantastic. He looks twenty years younger than his actual age. This was a wonderful interview, from beginning to end.
Great interview! I hope my mind is as clear and witty at age 86! Bud did often carry the show (FNB)! If any other actor was cast as Bud it would not have been the same! I hope all is well with Billy and it was awesome to see him!
I have watched many That's Classic interviews. They are all tremendous opportunities to "catch up" wifh people who have been in our living rooms for years, but we never get to talk to. Thanks for these. The stories they tell, the things they share, help paint a broader picture. These are history lessons and history preserved. I greatly appreciate them. As someone already mentioned, no escaping age, for any of us including me. Aging is a cruel joke as many of us still feel like a much younger version of us than we look as we become seniors. I tried to email Billy, but the emails I found online were apparently obsolete. If you could pass something along, I would be happy to send it via private message of some kind. Thank you John for this work you do!
First of all, thank you for your wonderful comments, I truly appreciate it. In regards to Billy, I cannot give out or pass anything on directly however you can send me a question as I will probably have Billy back on to answer fan questions.
Patricia Neal said she and Michael Rennie, who was quite sophisticated, and she were talking on set that who is gonna believe this silliness? She said they BOTH met many years later and spoke of how very proud they were to be part of it. She said it was a beautifully crafted film. I am glad Billy felt proud too.
What a great interview. I don't usually watch two 44 minute videos in a row. BG is now a legend in my mind. Had no idea about his motorcycle days. Credit goes to the interviewer that asked all the right questions. You can tell that Billy actually enjoyed this interview by his constant smiles. The research that went into this is amazing. Subscribed.
Thank you for very cool video and great interview of a Hollywood legend. I've always enjoyed his movies and TV, as well as watching him many times, when he raced speedway back in the 70's.
Interesting interview. I have watched many of the Father Knows Best episodes on the internet. Billy Gray was so good in that show. I didn’t realize that he acted in a lot of other things. He has led an interesting life. 🇨🇦
Hi John! I thoroughly enjoyed watching both of your interviews with Billy Gray and I must tell you again, that you are the best interviewer! “That’s Classic” is the best!!!!
I can't get my head around Billy's talent as a child actor . I had one acting job in a play went home assembled my costume green tights slippers feather in my cap. I was in front of the mirror practicing my two lines over and over thinking why I volunteered for this. The evening of the play arrived I was dropped off at the school auditorium and had real stage fright. AFTER THE PLAY I went home and promised never again. 😂
Terrific interview, great to hear Billy's reminisences. I went to Chiller in NJ last year, Billy wasn't there and I didn't see any notice that he would be. Lauren was supposed to be there but they said she was not well and couldn't come. I did meet Tina Cole and Stanley Livingston, was hoping to meet Lauren as well. I don't see Billy in the list of this year's guests in October either.
Appreciate it, thank you so much. Interesting because I know he was going to Chiller. Bummer you didn’t get to see Billy or Lauren. Tina and Stanley though are so nice so glad you saw them😀I know Billy doesn’t love to travel much these days.
@@ThatsClassicTV Thank you, do you know when he was supposed to be going to Chiller? This year in October, or was it last year? Would have been great to meet him. Tina was a doll, so very nice.
John Belushi did an impression of "Bud" on an episode of SNL where Ricky Nelson gets lost and wanders into the home of the Andersons on Father Knows Best (as if it was an episode of the Twilight Zone)
I read a book about Wallace Berman, written by his son. As a boy he met a lot of interesting people who would come to visit his father. He mentioned Billy, and he liked him a lot because Billy treated him as an equal, never talking down to him because he was a child.
Father Knows Best is on Antenna TV . They show 2 episodes every week day morning. Billy Gray also worked with Bob Hope on The 7 Little Foys. Enjoyable movie.
imagine the set of THE EARTH STOOD STILL and acting your scene with Michael Remme and the ROBOT. The movie has become legend. Billy gray had quite some luck in his acting career.
Enjoyed the 2-part interview. I wish at some point he would have removed his cap. His attire and the camera angle gave the illusion that we were in a duck blind hunting....
Got Billys autograph in the 70's at Irwndale raceway. I think I still have the race program with his signature on it. I recall he looked a little rough around the edges to my friends and I when we met him in the pits. I think we had expected to find clean cut Bud and here racer Billy looked kind of shaggy and greasy, but in a cool way.😂. There's a video of Billy in a race posted on TH-cam entitled "Billy Gray wins a motorcycle race" or something like that.
Billy Gray had a really big part in "The Day the Earth Stood Still". That movie is still so relevant. We need friendly beings from space to save us from ourselves. Long term I'm sadly not that optimistic unless humanity realizes the true danger of A-Bombs. Humanity is not doing very well on climate change either.
Century City (Mall) was once 20th Century Fox? When I was in Jr. High School my drama class took a field trip to 20th Century Fox. The entire studio was ablaze with the not disbanded New York City Barbra Streisand Hello Dolly ouytdoor set. Was it big? YES. What especially captured my attention was the ABC Petyon Place town square that I was now watching 3 nights a week in its hayday! Leigh Taylor Young. So pretty!
IMO I don't need major emoters (Pacino, Dean, Hoffman, Brando, et al) to understand good acting. If I can believe it, then it's good acting (better, actually). FKB was always good. I watched LITB for Wally but dropped when I got sick of Beeve and Eddie (and all of Beaver's and Wally's friends). I must say that 50 years later I find that the best person on LITB was Eddie. I liked Donna Reed all the way through but when I have watched 50 years later, am way less impressed with Jeff's friends than I was back in the day. I left My Three Sons shortly after Mike (Tim Considine) left the show and they adopted Ernie. Don Grady was not enough to keep me for long. Ozzie & Harriet I left when Rick got married. Dave was already married and so they began focusing on Oz and his friends - boring to me then and now. I don't see FKB much, and I have seasons 1-4 on DVD.
Billy Gray once said the show itself was a fantasy. He said the best advice is YOU know best! 5:00 $500 is about $6000 in today's money. Pretty good weekly salary for a 16 year old. 29:15 Yes, videotape was significantly lower quality than film back then. Now of course all video is HD.
I'm pretty good with mechanics, but guys like Billy will just invent stuff in their garage when they need a part. I knew guys like that growing up. Couldn't find the part they needed, so they just made them. Billy is such a pleasure to listen to, great interview.

Subscribed.
That means a lot to me Scott, thank you😀
Enjoyed this so much. Thx! 😊
Good honest interview
Thank you Dirk!
A great interview of a great actor!
I agree Charles and hope you saw the first episode of the interview as well.
Thank you for very cool video and great interview of a Hollywood legend. I've always enjoyed his movies and TV, as well as watching him many times, when he raced speedway back in the 70's.
My pleasure Phillip! Thats cool you saw him race in the 70's.
Interesting interview. I have watched many of the Father Knows Best episodes on the internet. Billy Gray was so good in that show. I didn’t realize that he acted in a lot of other things. He has led an interesting life. 🇨🇦
Glad you enjoyed it Elise and thanks again for watching from Canada!
❤ his smile still lights up like a Christmas tree ❤
I would agree Myrna, hope you caught the first episode of the interview as well.
Enjoying the interview! You're a good host, good interviewer
I really appreciate that Richard and hope you subscribe😀
FKB was a great show, all the acting was on a scale of 10 in each episode by all the main characters.
According to Billy it was shot like a movie😀
Great interview. The harmonica coach Billy couldn't recall was most likely Larry Adler.
@@williamconn1259 Thanks and interesting about Larry Adler😀
Oh yeah love that tv show watch it all the time.
Great to hear, Billy is a classic😀
Hi John! I thoroughly enjoyed watching both of your interviews with Billy Gray and I must tell you again, that you are the best interviewer! “That’s Classic” is the best!!!!
Diane that means a lot to me, thank you❤️
Fantastic 2-parter ‼️
Thank you Jack!
❤Thank You. Watching and sharing From the Philippines
hello to you in the Phillippines and thank you for watching!
Amazing fellow!
Daniel he really is! Hope you saw both episodes of the interview😀
Everything I ever learned about being a teenage boy I learned from Bud Anderson. Thank you so much for doing this interview! ❤️
My pleasure Paul😀
Wow! I had made a comment after part 1 (before viewing part 2), that he totally covered in his final thought on part 2.
What a good feeling!😊
Great interview. I remember him on Combat with Bill Bixby called The Losers, seaon 5
Thanks Robert, love the your recollection of Billy's episode on Combat. Hopefully you alos saw the first epsiode of my interview with Billy as well:)
All FKB episodes are on TH-cam.
Thanks for sharing.
So wonderful to see him
So glad you did!
John Belushi did an impression of "Bud" on an episode of SNL where Ricky Nelson gets lost and wanders into the home of the Andersons on Father Knows Best (as if it was an episode of the Twilight Zone)
Would love to see that😀
@@ThatsClassicTV If you can track it down on some streaming service...It's Season 4 Episode 12 (Rick Nelson, host Judy Collins musical guest)
I read a book about Wallace Berman, written by his son. As a boy he met a lot of interesting people who would come to visit his father. He mentioned Billy, and he liked him a lot because Billy treated him as an equal, never talking down to him because he was a child.
I love that story, thank you for sharing👍
Father Knows Best is on Antenna TV . They show 2 episodes every week day morning. Billy Gray also worked with Bob Hope on The 7 Little Foys. Enjoyable movie.
You should the interview, Billy talks quite a bit about Bob Hope and The Seven Little Foys😀There are two episodes to this interview.
@@ThatsClassicTV 2 episodes? I didn't know that. Thanks. I'll check it out :)
@@KarlLaFong-v2q Enjoy Karl!
That era was the last of the classy people in this country, and all in the cast have lived long long lives
Certainly a special time😀
As a 70 year old gearhead, always liked that Bud read HOTROD magazine.
That is cool and then in real life became a competitive motorcycle racer😀
imagine the set of THE EARTH STOOD STILL and acting your scene with Michael Remme and the ROBOT. The movie has become legend. Billy gray had quite some luck in his acting career.
It is wild to imagine that moment. I will say some luck plays into any actor’s career but especially in Billy’s case his talent was immense.
Great interview. Glad it was a 2-parter
Glad you enjoyed it Jerry😀
Enjoyed the 2-part interview. I wish at some point he would have removed his cap. His attire and the camera angle gave the illusion that we were in a duck blind hunting....
😂😂😀😂
Interview Princess and Kitten.😁
Have reached out but they are not up for it at this time.
no mention of his appearance on Superman? geez, a very good episode
I am not sure you saw the first episode of the interview, Billy talk about Jack Larson from Superman.
I saw both films with him and Doris. They were cute films. Father Knows Best was way before my time. But I have seen reruns.
Amazingly Father Knows Best has held up over time😀
Got Billys autograph in the 70's at Irwndale raceway.
Very cool story Jack, talk about a moment in time. I think if you go to billygrayofficial.com you can also see him racing. Thanks for the info:)
Read once that Bill had one of the largest motorcycle collections in California. 🤔👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I didn't know that Dave, pretty cool. Hope you also caught the first episode of my interview with Billy too.
@@ThatsClassicTV I'll make sure to.👍
Billy Gray had a really big part in "The Day the Earth Stood Still". That movie is still so relevant. We need friendly beings from space to save us from ourselves. Long term I'm sadly not that optimistic unless humanity realizes the true danger of A-Bombs. Humanity is not doing very well on climate change either.
The Day the Earth Stood Still is a classic and scary how relevant it is.
That is a great idea to open sparkling wine. No danger of getting beaned when it’s opened.
It is a pretty cool invention😀
I think it would be get for context to add photos as he’s talking about certain films
I agree, it all comes down to time:)
So pretty!
Wonderful story and at some point in the near future I will be releasing my interview with Leigh Taylor Young😀
@@ThatsClassicTV WHAT? Is that possible?
@@garywarmee4367 Yes it is😀
Who is doing the interview? He’s doing a fantastic job.
Hi Marilyn, that would be me, John Cato. Thank you for the compliment.
I have question for Billy about motorcycles, how can I contact him via email of FB?
Sorry but i don't pass on Billy's information however send me the question as I may do another interview with Billy just asking him fan questions.
He doesn't use Social media?
I was born in his 4th birthday.
Fun thing to spot out for yourself:)
Hey Billy is your Motorcycle Museum still open? If so where is it located?
75 yr old fan you're tops
Very cool Frank!
Where can I get a champagne bottle opener? not in gold tho 😊

If you somehow were able to re-live your life, what would you do differently?
I may be interviewing Billy again with fan questions, I will ask him if we get it together!
Westly windfield……badge 79!….
Does he still wear a steel shoe on his left foot? He did back in the old days.😉👍
Interesting I don’t know.

Interesting breakdown on your watch habits between all of these shows😀
Billy Gray once said the show itself was a fantasy. He said the best advice is YOU know best! 5:00 $500 is about $6000 in today's money. Pretty good weekly salary for a 16 year old. 29:15 Yes, videotape was significantly lower quality than film back then. Now of course all video is HD.
Thanks for sharing the info Adam, very interesting.
I would love to hear Billy talk about working with George Reeves - in "The Adventures of Superman".
😉💖
Thanks Stacey😀
I'm pretty good with mechanics, but guys like Billy will just invent stuff in their garage when they need a part. I knew guys like that growing up. Couldn't find the part they needed, so they just made them. Billy is such a pleasure to listen to, great interview.
Thanks Jeff and so true, it takes a certain mind but what a great skill to have😀
