@@this_name_is_taken somehow I have doubts about that, stuff like this would have happened anyway. A character doesn't even need to be in the public domain for this kinda stuff to happen. Garfield and SpongeBob have been getting much darker horror for years now.
The graphics and aesthetic of this game are really appealing and surprisingly clean, but the actual art and sound design makes me hugely uncomfortable.
As someone who played this at PaxWest, the creator was very nice and gave people a bunch of stickers while we test drove his game! Super nice guy, would recommend investing into this game in the future! The voice acting is a new aspect since Pax but I like the addition of it!
Try not to tear into the guy too much. Gametherapist, you're thinking of the best way to use the voices, not how they could've been learned. Gotta think of other ways he'd be familiar with the voices other than working there. Like maybe watching Disney movies? Here in the US, most kids at some point tried to mimic mickey mouse. For most, it was fleeting because we sucked at it, had fun, and moved on. The ones who kept doing it, maybe because they didn't initially sound like a tweaker, improved. You'd be surprised how much you can improve your voice -or anything, really- with just some occasional and consistent practice. Manly's impersonation has been shoddy at best but with his occasional joke you can hear the improvement over the last 2 years alone.
_Boy 'oh boy'_ I'm not sure what was the greatest horror - looking at "Daddy," cleaning those unknown clumps off the floor, or eating food off that same floor. Poor Mouse!
I think addiction in general. The parents are pretty neglectful, and the child is obese, so potenfially an eating disorder, but based on the fam not taking care of themselves properly. If i had to hazard a guess, the mothers out sleeping around or is a heavy drinker.
nah, kids that suffer abuse like this usually view their parents kindly, and themselves the issue. it's probably not deep and that the monster was just a monster for horror aesthetic. like how micky mouse is morbidly obese for no reason other than the hilarious sprinting mechanic
@@orcbum to be fair it seems like the playable character keeps justifying what the father does to him. For example, saying that he's been yelled at for being irresponsible. That and how he praises Daddy for "having strong working hands" even though all he really does through the game is demand an obscene amount of pills and punish the kid for the smallest thing. I was wondering if the horror aesthetic is used to portray how the father actually is personality wise, whereas maybe the protagonist doesn't see him as a monster due to being used to his demeanor. It sure is food for thought regardless
@@orcbum it really varies from case to case. there are plenty of children/teens well aware of how horrible their parents are, but they have no choice but to put up with it or else face their wrath. though this game is clearly an instance of a child remaining unaware of their abuse.
I watched a different playthrough and the game actually had a cutscene in the beginning where something crawled into the father's mouth. But I like this interpretation as well.
It's always nice to see Manly get advanced access to a build. This is a good, very uncomfortable horror take on Steamboat Mickey. Obviously there's body horror going on, but the belt in that game over is easily the real fear here.
That's because he respects silence, and doesn't feel the need to fill every second of his videos with his own voice. It's quite a nice change of pace compared to so many other channels out there.
Cute design of the main character; I'm eager to see how the finished game will be like. Whole game gives off "Newgrounds/South Park-esque parody made by 15 year old boy who hates Disney because his little sister likes it and his parents pay too much attention to her".
There's probably no connection, but any chance I can get I love to mention Stephen King's endless, unhinged short stories. Anyway, one of his older ones is called "Grey Matter" and is about a son taking care of his dad after he drinks a "bad beer" and turns into something a bit similar to the game's antagonist. "Bad cheese," "bad beer..." Let's just say there's a reason I keep an eye on expiration dates now, yeah?
This game is very reminiscent of Gray Matter. Right down to the implication that the dad wasn’t always the way he is now, and him beginning to grow a second face.
I feel like the person who did the sound design for this game thought if they added a bunch of slight sound effects (like the floors creaking, stomach churning) it would sound good but they made them way too loud and way too frequent
Considering how the kid acts in against how the father acts you can clearly tell he’s abusive, maybe the mom left the house and didn’t bring the child? That’s why every single time the kid gets beat / loses a life the mother’s voice is heard? Like a form of comfort
3:41 For a second there, I forgot Manly does a killer Mickey Mouse impression, and got very confused as to why the main character’s voice suddenly changed 😂
@nilswagner9379 "classical cheese" and "babybel", never thought I'd see these two associated, especially when talking about the plastic thingy inside a wax envelope
The abusive family themes run so deep for a small demo. Getting the painkillers a second time feels so anxious to me just to watch, because you're just waiting for yourself to do something wrong that you didn't know was wrong, all while being rushed by the same thing that wants you to do it perfectly on the first try. This is gonna be a sleeper hit if the full game can deliver on that build up.
I like how you can see Kid Mouse reflection in dad’s nose in the detailed zoom in. But the details in this game are stellar and the darker storyline too.
The dad currently looks like a deranged Goofy/ Pluto and in the picture he looks like Pete, not sure how genetics works(or if it's all a metaphor) in this game but I like what I saw
Very excited to see the full game release, but I’m betting this is going to be a very upsetting story. The theme being abusive families instead of generic monster stuff makes it stand out and almost have a realistic edge to it. Also, I’m strangely reminded of Jack Stauber’s short film, Opal. Kind of deals with similar stuff
While it is likely just addiction, I wonder if the painkillers quiet whatever infected the dad. Also, I can't help but wonder if the greasy junk we find is all Mousey gets to eat, making him overweight but malnourished
I do like this. Also I didn't like how long it took you to view the painting. Lol I was like "Come on you even got it highlighted" I assume your floor sausage and chips might be health or power ups. But I like to imagine you're just a fat mousy boy that just eats whenever.
from where you find them, and how there's a little icon similar to a save icon in the top right corner whenever you eat something, I think they might actually be collectibles.
Honestly the voice acting, art and style reminds me so much of Meatcanyon??? Did he have a hand in this game? Its just so him, expecially the sound while chewing
That's interesting, I'm wondering where this will go especially since the character sprites are so different from the pictures around the house. First time in a long time I think I've seen a father bring out the belt. That's funny.
Whenever a character’s arms are visible when they walk that means that they just. Walk with their arms out in front of them at all times and I just think that’s a funny image.
I kinda wonder with these if the fact its based in Steamboat Willie is detrimental. Like it has to exist as this parody, rather than its own thing. I mean Rubberhose cartoons always had a weird tone to them, why does it HAVE to be Steamboat Willie?
This is an excellent point. They almost didn’t need it to be related at all. But I think it’s because, recently, people have been coming up with stories but lack confidence, so they attach the name of something that already has a legacy to their work.
Its also a case of public reach, you wouldnt even find this if it didnt relate to steamboat. Manly would because hes just like that, but not everyone has that ability. An already established character can go much further than characters people never heard of before. only reason big game companies can do this is because of advertisments, elsewise it'd be a giant game of roll the million sided dice
