I've knitted (self taught) for over 35 years and I am a knitwear designer, yet didn't know how to do the cable cast-on until now. Brilliant. thank you!
I've watched other videos to see how to cast on at the end of a row but couldn't follow them - this is genius and I picked it up immediately. Thank you ❤️
I can’t thank you enough for posting this as well as your comment about the types of increases for the middle of the row as opposed to the end of the row. My pattern does not specify which method to use. It just said inc at the end of the row and continue to work in pattern. Since my project has tons of mini cables, I was frantically searching for the correct method to use so I wouldn’t mess up my work. Four knitting books and many videos later, I came across your technique. Finally, a solution!!
Thank you Hanna. I have been looking for a good way to increase a row without it looking "messy" and this methods works great. I had to increase/add in 35 stitches and keep it in pattern. The second method works perfectly and the end result so smooth. You rock!
Thank you, Hannah! A pattern I’m working requires stitches to be cast on both sides just like on your video, and I was clueless! (I’m a beginning knitter.) But, thanks to you, I’m no longer confused about the method am feeling confident about continuing my project.
Thank you for taking time to make such a helpful video. I am a self taught knitter and some problems emerge from my own mistakes.. Your video cut to the chase; it was easy to follow and on point. Thanks.
Thank you for this tutorial. This has been very helpful to me, and your explanation and demonstrations were to clear and easy to follow. Well done, and thank you again. Karen Swenson
this was exactly the information I needed, and you explained it so well! thank you, definitely subscribing for all the questions I am sure to have in the future (:
I need to add stitches to both ends of my work. If I add stitches, knit across my work, then add stitches to the other end, won’t my work be lopsided? The 2nd side I add stitches to won’t be on the same row I initially added stitches to.
Usually with a larger garment, where we often do this, the slight difference (it's more like half a row) won't notice at all once completed. This is how all patterns big and small do this technique. happy knitting 🧶
You’ll want to start over if you’re right next to the cast on. Or do a make one/kfb when you find there are one or two stitches missing. I’ll usually start again from scratch, as a proportion of the whole knit casting on is a small effort. Happy knitting 🧶
Thank you for the video. My pattern says to cast on at both ends of the row, so am I right in understanding that effectively I have to cast on at the end on of one row, turn, work across, cast on at other end, turn and work across?
For a single stitch I'd use a make one, for multiple stitches I use the same methods seen here, as the shaping is 99% of the time at a seam, so it won't be seen once the knitting has finished.
Ahhh wonderful! I’m so happy I found you. So many patterns assume we know how to do these things. The only question I have - after adding the 2nd set of add on cast ons, you said to knit through just like the other. Do you mean knit all the way across, through the main part as well as the first set of add ons?
Thankyou Hannah. Your tutorials are consistently clear and to the point with excellent clarity in videos. I'm lost to find an answer anywhere for a pattern wording which is unclear to. Hope you don't mind just clarifying for me. Pattern for coat hood reads: Work in SS Inc 1 st each edge of next row 6 times. Does this mean I increase 6 st at beginning and 6 st at the end of the same row? I've never seen this before in a pattern and hope you don't mind me asking. Thankyou.
Thanks, Louise. I’m so glad you find the tutorials helpful. I’m thinking this actually means: For each of the next 6 rows increase a stitch at the end and a stitch at the beginning. Total increase, 12 sts over 6 rows. Have a look at the photo and the shape of the hood, and look ahead to find the finishing instructions. Sometimes the sewing you’ll have to do once you’ve finished the knitting will give an idea of the shape you’re supposed to be making. Happy knitting 🧶
Thank you for sharing these techniques. QUESTION(S): Will these cast on's work when using circular needles? Or are these cast on's only for straight needle knitting. Thank you in advance for reading and answering this question/concern. If they don't work, do you know of any ways to cast on for circulars? Oh yes, I have also liked and subscribed to your channel upon finding it today/right now.
Hi, yes these cast ons will work on circular needles. If you'd like to learn more about knitting on circulars I have a short course, 'Circle Skills' that will help with the foundations of circle knitting. academy.knitwithhannah.co.uk/circle-skills
@@KnitWithHannah Thank you I'll look into it. I've been a knitter for years and have been away from it for about 7+ years. Getting older I am very rusty and trying to reaquaint myself with knitting again and techniques. Thank you again.
Thank you so much for this video! I’m new to Knitting and this helped a lot. One question. Once you add on the stitches at the end of the row, you simply knit the stitch until the original?
Hi Tori, yes, you just follow the pattern - it will tell you whether to knit or purl or use a stitch pattern over the stitches you've just added. Happy knitting! 🧶
Yes, Caroline. there are lots of abbreviation tutorials in the jargon playlist and I can help more specifically inside the membership. Both those links are in the description for this video.
Hi Charlie, I'm not sure that I was talking about which cast on, other than for adding stitches in this video. But I always use a cable cast on for a hat, it's stretchy and a strong long-lasting for a brim.
How do we know, how many stitch we need to add ? I hope you can answer me 🥺 because my knitting progress (scarf ) went weird it’s not square 🥲, the edge look kind of triangle
Hi Fuzzy Bee, it sounds like the Beginner Knitting Help video playlist might help: th-cam.com/play/PLnqw36aiAI0gTYxZdtkjCxDjBxoI1txqC.html I’d also suggest casting off ( th-cam.com/video/3pKVKM7V5W8/w-d-xo.html ) and starting over as the first pieces that any knitter knits will likely be a bit wobbly. When you start again you’ll likely have straighter sides and you won’t need this video. Any more questions let me know! Happy knitting 🧶
That will depend on the pattern, some will, some won't. You'll find out whether you're told to switch to smaller or larger needle in different places. happy knitting 🧶
Yes, once you’ve done an even number of rows, you’ll have the same number, but it will be slightly skew. Won’t really notice unless you’re using a very thick yarn. Happy knitting 🧶
@@KnitWithHannah thanks! I am using a heavy yarn so I ended up evenly adding stitches through the middle instead but it’s good to know for the future that I can do this too on lighter yarns :)
