Another one of my favs, this song showcases what I like about Mitski: she's talented in writing condensed pop songs that aptly express emotional longing for someone.
I couldn't help but read the lyrics as queer-coded, especially when she sang:
"But with everybody watching us
We do have reputation
We keep it secret
Won't let them have it"
As someone who lives in a homophobic country, I can relate to the lyrics, because they remind me of the countless times I am forced to love someone in silent, hidden away from the public's watchful eyes because we have reputation to keep.
Of course, you can also interpret it as talking about forbidden love in general. But that's the power of art right? Art can be interpreted in any way as one pleases, just like Mitski's songs.
I agree I see once more to see you, come into the water, and old friend as a trilogy and all of them seem very Sapphic to me, especially the line
"Maybe I'm the same, as all those men writing songs of all their dreaming, but could you tell me if you want me? Because I can't move until you show me."
Mitski has had relationships with women in the past so I wouldn't be surprised at all.

for me, this song is about a secret queer relationship. I think it's a popular interpretation, but still, I want to talk about it!
As a woman, you are already believed and expected not to be sexual at all - that expectation is even stronger if you were with another woman. "But with everybody watching us, our every move / we do have reputations / Will you keep it secret / won't let them have it" - you don't want people to make fun of your relationship or think you're wierd, so you'll keep it secret for as long as possible. The "everybody" might refer to society as a whole or something like a friend group, and in that case you don't want them to suspect you two are possibly together, so you will not at all act romantically towards your secret partner.
"I wouldn't have to scream your name / on top of every roof in the city of my heart" - you want to scream about just how much you love that person, how important they are to you, but you are afraid of others, even though you want everybody to know about your love, so you just scream it inside of your heart, since there's no better option.
"So come inside and be with me / alone with me" - there's no particular thing i want to say about this, just that i love this line. Like, you want to be alone with that person, you want to give eachother your whole attention, just be yourselves, not care about what others might think, and i find it very relatable and beautiful.
As an afab enby lesbian, this song is so relatable for me and many others. It's hard being a queer woman/feminine person/female in this world, but i believe it will be better for all of us out there. Sadly, though, society is built around men, so women, especially lesbians and romantically repulsed (is that the right word?) aroace women, have it so much harder in so many aspects.

As a trans guy, i feel this song in my soul. I can't transition, nor socially or hormonally, for reasons that would put me, my financial life and my health at risk. So, basically, although the partners i had knew and accepted me, their families, who were conservative in all the situations I've been, didn't knew. It felt like my partner liked me, but was afraid of other discovering this about me, were ashamed of me, and for that, i feel disgusting sometimes, undeserving of love. I am afraid of even trying to transition, but i can't be the way i am right now for the rest of my life, it's agonizing, and the feeling of loving someone so hard, and being loved back, but hiding your love (or at least, the most important aspects of it) from the world is frustrating. Mitski just captured this so perfectly im this song, i feel a bit less alone.
someone confessed to me today with this song playing in the background. It wasn't intentional, and I was being emotional over a breakup I had gone through not too long ago. Your music calming to me in a sense. But this song will forever hold a special place in my heart. Not because of its nature, not because of anything simple. But because it was played on the best part of the best day of my life.
