"Pretty cheerful stuff, right?" 😂 You did great job on telling the tale! This one was always the most disturbing to me, as a child back then and even now as a father...
Also called 'Nöck' in parts of Germany. And of couse old people like me watched dubbed 'Jak utopit doktora Mráčka aneb Konec vodníků v Čechách' back in the days :)
Good job spreading awareness about our culture! - A little point of interest: there is actually a word for the membranes, it's called webbed hands/feet.
I am currently writing a fictional book on monsters for a Witcher themed larp I am attending in the near future. I'll make sure to add some folkloric references when I get to the entry for Vodník in order to spread a bit of Central and Eastern European culture.
I didn't know about it when I was making this video but wodniks (as they're called in Polish) are actually explicitly mentioned in The Last Wish so they're already a part of The Witcher lore 🙂 Good luck with your larp by the way 😉
Žijou v kanálech a lesích ..tzv-skinwalker,crawler,the take....humanoid.
Sounds similar to a shellycoat. A troll that lives in bogs and wears a coat made of cockleshells that rattle. She can lead travelers into the bog where they get lost, but will help you find your way if you give her a small bell to wear on her coat
Thank you for the info, sounds interesting 🙂 We have another folklore creature that lures people into the swamp and that's bludička (will-o'-the-wisp essentially). I want to do a video about them in the future.
I once stole the story of the Vodník from Kytice for my fantasy rpg. The characters had to rescue a woman's child from him, whom she married and ran away from at the urging of her mother. The characters failed. In fury of this feeble attempt, he killed the child and declared the woman free from him. It was powerful.
There is a difference between wodnik and utopiec. Just like between mara wodna (utopica)and rusałka. At least in Poland's lore. At least my greatgrandparents described them differently.
Yeah, I thought so 🙂 I just included it because they're both water creatures and I wanted to mention it since they're both in The Witcher books and people know drowners from the games.
Kelpie are very rarely ever depicted as appearing as female. Usually they appear as a horse, or if in human form, as a man. They can usually be detected as not human by the waterweeds in their hair. Same with the each uisge. Kelpies are mostly by rivers, and each uisge by lochs.
Another great vid👏
Thanks 🙂

I was kinda hoping for a mention of Konec vodniku v Cechach in the video
I wonder if he is related to Old Gregg.

Thank you 🙂 That's my goal with this channel. Thanks for the tip 👍
The way you put the camera into the water at the beginning was so epic.
Great how you tell the stories and illustrate them.

I'll show my girlfriend. How lucky she is not to be married with Wodnik. xD

Very interesting. It sounds like the Scottish Kelpie, though that is female, not male.
Kelpie are very rarely ever depicted as appearing as female. Usually they appear as a horse, or if in human form, as a man. They can usually be detected as not human by the waterweeds in their hair. Same with the each uisge. Kelpies are mostly by rivers, and each uisge by lochs.
Ciri named her horse Kelpie after that creature :)
Actually in some stories the Czech Vodník can turn into a horse... I'm not a folklorist, but perhaps there is some connection?
Since all European ethnic groups come from the singular, indo european culture, there are many similarities.
IM OLD GREG!!!
sounds kinda like... old gregg
