Old Poops basic bank & slope mower

  • The church driveway runs up a hill and has a steep bank on one side. We needed an easy, safe way to mow it, and started this project 3 years ago. After a bit of trial and fixing what broke, we now have a simple and reliable system.
    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: 1) WHY THE CHAINS? After I finish mowing the bank, I remove the bank mower and use the Craftsman to mow up and down several steep slopes at the bottom of the hill that would be impossible w/o chains. All other reasons/opinions pro/con chains are irrelevant. I like my chains. If/when they wear out, I will get more. (Grin)
    2 ) TURNING THIS RIG AROUND: When I get to the top or bottom of the hill, I turn it around. The Craftsman turns fairly normally, the bank mower at the end of the booms moves really quick!
    Simple, really...
    Things I forgot to mention on the video: keep the holes at either end of the booms loose - the bank mower needs to be able to pivot & twist getting on and off the bank.
    Maximum boom length is about 10'. Even a light 20" mower on a 10' lever arm really loads up the tug and makes it hard to steer. Also, plan on working your way down any hills, not up, same reason.
    Going up hills? No way. It won't steer or go; too much side leverage. The Craftsman steering gears get replaced every year because the side load wears them out.

      Back in the 80s there was something called the Noma flymo. Lol. I'm sure they stopped that for liability issues but would be fun. Anyone have or try those? Even remember them? (I think it had no wheels and floated like a hovercraft ,but I could be wrong.

      Nobody said it wasn't reasonable to have a buffer area in most areas, for fire control, and scary wildlife control, but 40 acres, 100 acres, 160 acres? No one needs more than an acre at most. Two acres if you have a shop and yard, which is what I have.

    • @deanacousins
      @deanacousins 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Depending on where you live, the city/town requires you to mow it. If there's water, or natural gas lines running through there, you're limited on what you can plant there for shrubbery. Planting flowers that do not grow too tall beside the road is an option for some properties. Many towns have rules for what meets their code standards.
      I received a warning letter to mow when all I had was short clover growing that wasn't over 6 to 7 inches.

    • @Tailspin80
      @Tailspin80 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@deanacousins Here in the U.K. I don’t think there are any restrictions on what you can grow or how you should maintain it. You are allowed to cut off branches that overhang your boundary and there are rules about the maximum height of hedges, but it’s not policed by the authorities, only by civil action between private parties. Drying clothes in the garden on a line or rotary drier is not only allowed but encouraged, whereas in the states it will get you a fine in some places.

    • @deanacousins
      @deanacousins 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Tailspin80 We have a problem with ticks that carry Lyme disease in our state, the ticks like taller grass, trees and such. But mostly in the town I live, they wouldn't want wild flowers mixed in with anything just growing beside the road. In the country it's fine, just not in town beside the road. You can grow wild flowers, plant shrubs/trees on your own property further away from the road without an issue.
      I agree that would be a nice idea for this person with that steep incline. It'd be pretty and would help the bees.
      I like to have a section of our yard left for wildflowers, sunflowers etc.

    Seems like it would be easier to just plant a short growing ground cover and never mow it again.

    Looks good, works well, and more cheaper than what DOTs across America buy as attachments to their expensive tractors

    Many kudos! From the description, it obviously took a lot of trial and error to get that thing to function reliably.

    Is it just me or would it be more economical to hire some high school kid to come mow the lawn?

    Very ingenious!! I can't tell you how I had to bust my butt cutting hillsides alot steeper than this and all by hand when working on golf courses. BRUTAL STUFF!! Slid downhill a couple of times but never went under the mower, thank God!! I'm old now and can't do that stuff anymore. But if I ever have to cut a hillside again, I will definitely keep this in mind!! This looks like a "system" that could be, and SHOULD be patented, manufactured and sold!! Good job!👍
