- BJ Holdsworth, bowhunting New Zealand Red Stags, BJ's quest to get one on the ground fair chase spot and stalk with an honest shot is challenged. Some drama unfolds as he deals with failure.
Nice work, I got my first animal with a bow this year. A nice 9 point Red with a 45 yard shot. Bow hunting has given me a whole new appreciation for deer stalking. I enjoy your videos. Cheers.
Great video! I really want to do an archery red stag hunt in New Zealand. I'm shooting for 2021. I hunt elk in Colorado with a bow and this video really inspires me to go for red stag.
Excellent camera work and great presentation. That first stag "debacle" is why I stick with single bevel fixed blade broadheads. I've seen so many failures and flukes leading to a lack of penetration on deer and elk here in the NW/Western US (bigger game to be fair, much bigger in the case of elk) that I'll never go back to mechanical broadheads despite all the industry hype we see in the bowhunting world.
Thanks for sharing this video I really appreciate the time you put in to edit these videos you can definitely tell and it really pays off thank you
Need to get rid of those rage broad heads. I had the same results multiple times before switching to a different broad head like Afflictor K2's. Never lost another deer after the switch.
Good stuff mate, Good to see that the stag was all good after that shot and was fit and healthy for the rut. Keep up the great bow hunting videos look forward for the next one.
Wow, great film BJ, I really enjoy watching your videos. The first thought that came to me after watching this was that its the kiwi version of Eric Chesser's fire bull film because of the stag being shot and then you ere able to find him again much later. The stag even has that crazy whale tail back end!
Great video as usual
i came across your channel searching for mathews no cams, and 2 thumbs way up my friend!!!
I want to come hunting with you when it’s my birthday
great video, really intriguing to watch, absolutely love hunting and have just started mAking my own vids, your channel is a real inspiration, keep up the great work!

Thanks for your support as always Sterling.
Well done mate, great vid 💪🏻
Great shoot 👍 what is the model of your bow?
Bastien LEO Matthews halon
I think your hunts excellent, not to mention that it is very beautiful where you hunt, this yes it is the reality of a hunter to go behind its sustenance
I wish you put out more videos!
Bonjour BJ quel est la puissance de ton HALON ?
Beautiful country great video thanks
What bow would you recommend for someone who hunts pretty much the same stuff as you and is about 5 foot 10 tall and has pretty good upper body strength and would be shooting at about 50-60 yards MAXIMUM on a good clear day with wind perfect and in my favour
I would recommend you find a good bow shop and get fitted , that is have your bow set up by experts so you have good anchor points and confidence to shoot (hopefully from a few lessons from the shop people), finding form early in shooting a bow is crucial, as there is a lot to learn..Most bows these days shoot well it would be hard for me to recommend any bow brand as they all perform pretty good. Hope this helps, good luck mate.
Thank you mate I really appreciate that.👍👍
Yes sir - you have to get rid of those wretched rage broadheads. I suggest that was your problem with the first shot. I use a good quality Ozzie two blade broadhead and have never had a problem.
Well done, BJ, you make great vids, as always,..;-))!!
Hey mate what sight do you run on your bow. Thanks Ethan
HHA single Pin.
That's one of the cooler racks iv seen on a red. Side on one side looks like it has elk genetics and the other side red genetics
Excellent video just like all your others and a bloody top stag toboot
Tune that set up properly so you can finally shoot straight arrows
I love to watch this Video on and on!! This is real hunting!
Great video!!!! arrow weight?
485 grains.
What's your set up mate?
beautiful stuff brother thank you
Will you be chasing any sambar in the near future?
I HOPE SO....
What's the bow setup your runnin?
Mathews Halon 6, Trophy Taker Smack Down, HHA Sight, Tight Spot Quiver, Axion reverse back Stabiliser Flight Tech Arrows...
BJHoldsworth sweet, what release?
Stan back tension release as addition to the Carter Four Finger.
@bjholdsworth a video on your tuning methods and then some more goat hunts would be epic!!
nice one mate top video!
Awesome video
One side looks like a normal red stag the other looks like the bull elk.
That is called a Windsor throwback, it is pure Red stag--you are right though it has elk like looks..
@@BJHoldsworth what does it take for someone from the united states to come over for a hunt like that? Awesome video !
This is a awesome vid!! ✊🏽💯
What a beautiful stag good on ya bj how can I book a trip

Another great video bj
Great video beautiful animals and scenery. Junk the rage broadheads they are the worst broadheads ever designed. Dr. Ashby did some great testing on African game with all major broadheads. Rage were dead last every time.
Great video, its always easy to blame a mechanical broad head for the disappointment of a failed kill. The blades clearly deployed. The shot was high into dense muscle on a animal that was quartering away, and then moving away from the arrow. Suck to hit one and not get the desired results, but this time the only thing to blame is well, bad luck. That stag moved a lot before the arrow hit, reducing the impact force of the arrow.
Yes the forward motion of the stag jumping the string upset effective penetration. There is not a lot of dense muscle there, I have skinned plenty of stags since. I think (but I don't know) a two blade broad head would have been more effective in this scenario. I have studied the shot frame by frame a hundred times ha ha...
You should make a turkey hunting video
Great hunt just need to get rid of the mechanical broad heads!
When we people learn mechanical broadheads are unreliable on big game. Can't believe people still use these.
Yeah ended up using an old tested tried and proven 3 blade for the end result..I did have some success with mechanicals but as I was told by a Rage fan "it was just one of those shots" bad luck I guess!
@@BJHoldsworth that's good to hear should work out good for you. Yeah I had 2 quartering shots on deer with terrible results. Blades fail to fully open and deflect badly. I found both deer but took lots of hour of tracking. Went back to fixed blade and three blade. Never have a problem with finding animals within 100 yards. Great video though!
Unlucky that it hit the rib
Hey bj I will try to make a long bow for you can you go on a hunting trip with it
no thanks mate...that's a kind offer though
Cool👍🏻
Wow!
Fixed blades all the way.. BJ ive been using the ozcut 150gn two blade. Seriously epic and fly better than my field points. (No joke)
Give them a go mate.
Apex hunting in oz have them.
You have to sharpen them up on a stone but they are high carbon and easy to get razor sharp but the real bonus is their ability to blow through anything..
You need to wax your strings man, they look like shit lol
