      @@michaelgarofalo6231 well that's just the American steam locomotives were built it not there fault that they aren't built beautiful unlike the British locomotives and they were built like that to look really useful and American steam locomotives pulled more heavier trains than the British locomotives

      Vincent Berkan yeah, safety things with the firemen dying of exposure, broken rods coming though the cab floor pinning the (dead) engineer to the roof/boiler. Also you could bake a cake in those cabs.

      Among other issues, such as if the boiler (heaven forbid) exploded, the engineer’s corpse was now a bullet flying into (and through) anything on the right side of the train

    Don't worry about the Hudson pulling freight. Milwaukee used them as mix traffic and the NYC used a lot on fast freight. So it's prototypical

      That, and many American steam locomotives often served their last days hauling freight before being retired (stored or scrapped.)

    There is something nice about American locomotives. They are just so large! A few American locomotives are in service e.g. the class 67. Correct me if I'm wrong!

      Class 59 and 66 were built by EMD. You'd be surprised to know how many EMD and GE components are rolling around on UK equipment.

      They’re built for distance and power. The Hudson had 10K more torques than, say, “Flying Scotsman”, with roughly equal maximum speeds, yet had to make a one way journey that was longer than Scotsman’s round trip.
      The engine would have coupled on at Croton-on-Hudson, which incidentally remains the northern end of electrification on the line out of Grand Central Terminal, and run through to Chicago, covering about 930 miles one way (the route of the old 20the Century Lemited was roughly 960 miles, but I was discounting the 32 miles pulled by an electric locomotive).
      If my math and map reading are up to snuff, that’s about a run from London to Edinburgh, back down to London and then back to about Doncaster.

      @@SamsTrains The Class 59s were US-built. The Class 66s were built at the former GMD (General Motors Diesel Division) plant in London, Ontario, after GM sold it off and it became known as EMD. I used to photograph some of them (and other locomotives for Canadian, US, and Mexican railways) parked outside of the factory and in the former and once-again CN yard in Stratford on their way to port.
      The other half of GMD built wheeled armoured vehicles. General Dynamics now owns the whole factory, and has increased production of much-improved wheeled armoured vehicles for Canadian, US, and many other users.

    The Special livery for the GS-4 was also on #4449. It was painted red, white, and blue, and called the "American Freedom Train" for our Bicentennial in 1975-76.

      The Freedom Train collected food and materials from around the US just after the end of WW2 to send to Europe to help them rebuild.

      ⁠@@kiwitrainguythat’s the French/American Friendship Train you’re talking about. The American Freedom Train was a celebratory event to celebrate the bicentennial of America’s claim of independence from British rule. The American Freedom Train was pulled by Philadelphia & Reading T1 2101 for the eastern part of the journey, followed by Texas & Pacific 2-10-4 610 for the midwestern section, and finally SP GS4 4449 for the western part. The train carried significant documents from American history.

    That PRR loco is a USRA Pacific, not the K4s that Pennsylvania Railroad actually used. The PRR was well known for almost all of its locomotives having the distinctive squared firebox, known as a belpaire firebox (something commonly found on Brit locos!).
    Sadly a lot of model makers today take a USRA design, slap a Pennsy logo on the tender and sell it. While the PRR did have USRA designs on its roads, they were almost exclusively from other roads they took over. Only a handful of other designs, such as the J1 class and N2s were built as new for the railroad outside the Pennsy standard

    4449’s appearance in _Tough Guys_ is also worth noting. One of the most iconic scenes in the movie is when the locomotive steams towards the Mexican border. That shot was actually done with a bit of camera trickery. The real locomotive was shot head-on, then a model was used to show the crash.

    Thank you Sam for running a hand full of American type locomotives. Especially a few special ones( a camel back, Daylight, and Hudson). I am an ERIE Railroad enthusiast. It was a thousand mile RR, and is almost forgotten. NO steam locomotive of that RR was saved ! I built a 1903 Erie Atlantic 4-4-2 in 1 1/2 inch scale live steam. A proper coal burner. Thank you again for running some American type engines.

    Sam: Technically, your “camelback” is more correctly known as a “mother Hubbard”, since a true camelback had the cab on top of the boiler.

      @@SamsTrains be sure to mention southern railway 4501 and Savannah & Atlanta 750. Flying Scotsman actually met up with these two steamers in an event called Steam-O-Rama. Broadway Limited Imports makes a good model of 4501 that is accurate for the time. The model is around $400 with dcc and sound, but well worth the cost in running quality.

    Hi Sam. Finally, a show where I recognize and feel at home with the Motive Power you are running. I watch to see the UK style trains but they just aren't quite "at home" to me. They are interesting to learn about which is why I have your channel as a Fave. I hope the Euro watchers see these things daily and learn something about trains from my side of "The Pond".

      @@thebigengine There are three countries in North America: Canada, Mexico, and the United States. All of them are American countries and all of their citizens are technically Americans. I realise that the term "American" is sometimes used to represent only the US, but it is incorrect. The term "European" doesn't just refer to Germany or France, but to all Europeans, irregardless of nationality. The same with "Asian".

      Also surprised you did not squeeze in your Berkshire you had in this running.
      Also the mouthful of the Milwaukee railroad had a simpler name which was a nickname but a semi-adopted brand, it was also know as simply _"The Milwaukee Road"_ .
      In addition some have commented the pronunciation of the Wabash in which it is said as Wau-Bash.

      It's rare because they most often get resprayed. They are a fantastic starting point for more accurate projects.

    This was enjoyable. I just found your channel today. Entertaining. I live in the American west, in Nevada. I was out of the hobby since the early 90s, but starting to get back into it. I model mostly diesel from the mid 1970s to the mid 1980s, stuff I remember from when I was a kid. But I still thoroughly enjoyed this video.

    I dig that camelback. Such a weird design. Are you planning a review on it?
    And speaking of weird American steam locomotives; I’d love for you to eventually take a look at the geared logging locomotives, such as the Shay, Heisler and Climax, which were integral to the logging industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in North America, Australia and New Zealand.
    Aside from cog locomotives, reckon you’ll never see a weirder trio of steam locomotives!

      @@SamsTrains the old Bachmann Spectrum 3-truck shay would be a good option. They are normally valued at $300+ but they make up for it in performance. They aren’t very fast but that’s how shays are.

      @@SamsTrains there are a lot more B&O locomotive models than you would expect. Bachmann makes USRA light mikados in B&O, AHM makes the B&O 2-10-2 big six, and Broadway Limited makes B&O 2-8-0s just to name a few.

      Personally my favorite locomotives (and coincidentally ones I'd love to watch) are the Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy and the New York Central 4-8-4 Niagara. The Niagra in fact was so well balanced that two men could push engine and tender and it also rivaled the efficiency of the diesel. Despite this, the Big Boy is still my favorite. An idea would be to have a competition of some sort between American and English engines. Three other interesting locomotives in my opinion are the Union Pacific 4-12-2 9000 Class locomotive, the Santa Fe (technically Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe) 2-10-4 Texas class locomotive, and the Virginian Triplex locomotives. Greetings from the deep South in the good ole U.S.

    The Pennsylvania Pacifics were called K4s and 425 were built. I have an Atlantic Coast Line Pacific that also resembles the Wabash Pacifics.

    The "Wa" in Wabash is pronounced like the"wau" in Milwaukee.
    "Lima" pronounced leema.
    The Daylight livery is exceptional, but CN loco is very appealing, too.

      No, in the US, Lima is usually pronounced "Lyma", just like the city in Ohio.

    Hey, Sam that Hudson you talked about, that's actually a Milwaukee Road class F6 Baltic locomotive. A total of 22 were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works between January and March of 1930. 14 were F6 units with the feedwater heater coffin flush in the smokebox, and 8 were F6-a units with a Wilson Water Conditioner. They served with the Milwaukee Road until being retired between 1952 and 1954, and all of them were scrapped.

    A charming production that underscores the simple love of model trains. The Camelback had a large coal grate to permit the burning of a cheap coal called Anthracite. Because it burned poorly, a larger fire grate was needed to raise steam. Placing the cab over the drive rods resulted in horrific results when the rods came detached; Widow Makers. This production shows me that British locomotives are unsurpassed for grace and beauty.

    To my knowledge, the PRR very rarely mounted lanterns on the front of the smoke box, as that was usually where they put their iconic red and gold number plaques.

    The special livery you referenced for the Daylight was for the bicentennial train in 1976, the loco was repainted red white and blue.

    Although I would have really loved to see the Union Pacific Big boy, I understand that it is both semi rare and really expansive. I guess that’s what happens for being the biggest steam engine in the world lol. 😀 anyway great video!

      It depends whether you're talking about the model or the real thing. Several manufacturers have made models of the Big Boy and I think some are currently available (Marklin/Trix, Athern, Broadway Limited Imports).
      As for the real thing 8 were preserved and 4014 is now running on the mainline (since 2019).

    Haha you did it! I don't know if you remember my comment about the President's Choice train sets on your Bachmann Prairie review but that green Canadian National engine was one of the locomotives out of those train sets I was talking about. Turns out you had one all along. I believe the set that particular engine came out of was called the Bullet Nosed Express because of that cone shaped smokebox. Glad you got your hands on one without having to get the terrible cheap rolling stock with it, the cars in those sets were so light they barely stayed on the tracks!

    This is as American as a deep-fried apple pie served by a bald eagle at a Dallas Cowboys game on the Fourth of July with red, white, and blue fireworks setting off in the distance.
    Though, in terms of the rolling stock, you *did* have to take a few liberties. Get it? Liberty? Because America?

    B and o stands for Baltimore and Ohio. It is one of my favorite rail companies although it goes by the new name of csx. My great great grandfather worked as a conductor for b and o. Also I have seen this locomotive in the b and o railroad museum in Baltimore and it does in fact look nothing like that

    J-1 hudsons were built for the new york central railroad and its unusual to see it in a scheme for another railroad, the Chicago Milwaukee, st paul and pacific, was know simply as "the Milwaukee road", another tidbit is camel backs were also known as "mother hubbard" locomotives

    Great running session Sam, although it may look weird I wouldn't worry too much about American locos with British stock, I often run my G Gauge American 0-4-0 Porter with Swiss and German stock!

    4449 is my favorite engine ever made and it's a wonderful model. I had the same bachmann one when I was a kid. They other livery for it is the American freedom train. The engine was restored into working condition for the bicentennial voyage in 1976. It was truly an engine that is very important to my nations history. Thank you Sam for featuring it for us!     4-8-2 Mountains/Mohawks were the standard fast freight locos of the New York Central (four-wheel leading trucks allow for faster speeds than a 2-8-2 Mikado can do), and were the standard mixed-use locomotives of the Pennsylvania Railroad.

    HAHAHA YES, I LOVE THE U-1-F (the Canadian National steamer)! When did you buy it? I'd love to see the review on it if you have one planned!
    PS: there are 3 examples of the U-1-f left, 6060 is being restored in Alberta and has been in working order since 1986! 6069 is on static display outside in Sarnia in Ontario and word is (I don't know how true this is) there are efforts to restore 6069 and 6077 is on static display in Strafford Ontario. All 3 of them still have the iconic bullet nose!

      6077 is in capreol at a railway museum, my dad saw it

      @@thestarlightalchemist7333 Correct - and Capreol is a 538 kilometre/334 mile drive (via the quickest route) from Stratford.
      The nearest preserved locomotive to Stratford is 6167, a CNR U-2-e 4-8-4 preserved in Guelph, 74 kilometres away.
      Sadly, Stratford, once a major CNR division point and home to the largest steam CNR locomotive overhaul and repair shop, has no preserved locomotive to honour that part of its heritage.
      The CNR "Big Shop" remains, but is empty and deteriorating.

    The special livery of the gs-4 is the American freedom train. The 4449 was hauled out of a park and restored to running condition for it. Where it ran as a national celebration of the bicentennial of the USA in 1976. It was given custom painted passenger cars to go with it. Afterwards it was painted back to its normal
    Daylight paint. But it was repainted back to the freedom train for a short period in 2002(I think) as a memorial to 9/11.

    Camelbacks have always been my favorite. They're relatively rare (only 5 of any type surviving in original configuration in the US I believe), very unique, and happened to be used by my hometown railroad the Delaware & Hudson all the way up to the end of steam on that line in 1953. They were used in pretty much any early wheel configuration you can think of from the Reading's 0-4-0 class A-4-b switchers to D&H's massive 2-8-0 class E-5, Erie even built a class of 0-8-8-0 locomotives. The Wootten firebox was developed to burn anthracite coal waste as an alternative to more expensive and much dirtier bituminous, and as you said the firebox was so tall and wide they thought it more practical to move the engineer's cab to the middle. As technology progressed and more equipment like generators, automatic stokers, and feedwater heaters were shoved under the cab thereby raising it's height the center cab became unnecessary. That and the Federal Railroad Administration banned new construction after 1927 due to safety concerns.
    As far as I can tell Mehano based their 2-6-0 off New York, Ontario, & Western's class U locomotive, several of which were either bought secondhand or leased to other railroads as well. If/when you decide to do a review of it you shouldn't have too much difficulty finding good photos of that class, I think it was their most numerous camelback.

Just this big, towering, monolithic behemoth with an unfathomable amount of power and not a single part wasted belching steam and smoke from seemingly every orifice. It's like a steel god is bearing down on you.
      I kinda want to see Tornado and UP 844 take a trip to France, lash up to some excursion trains, and run down the TGV tracks with the regulators pinned wide open and the fireboxes running white hot. Head to head steam loco race, finest on our rails, finest on ya'll's, with the grand prize being a world record for fastest steam locomotive pulling an actual train!
      And then maybe a rematch when that PRR T1 that's being built finally gets completed, but she won't be railworthy for over a decade sad to say.
      OH! On that note, it'd be pretty sweet if you had a model of a PRR T1 for your railway. 4-4-4-4, oddball wheel config, unofficially the fastest steam locomotive in the world.

    The Anthracite Roads (Lehigh Valley, Lackawanna, Erie, and others) ran loads of Camelbacks; the wide firebox evidently worked better with the hard anthracite coal. Neat to see one on here! The Pacific is a standard USRA Light Pacific, which the B&O was the biggest user of; oddly, the Pacific would be far more accurate for the B&O than the Camelback is! PRR had mostly homegrown locomotives, including a very prolific class of homegrown Pacific that looked quite British thanks to its Belpaire firebox and stubby cab. Either way, great to see some US stuff!

    Hey Sam, you ought to keep your eyes peeled for Mantua Atlantic 4-4-2’s... saw an ad for them in an old magazine I bought, and they look like something that would be up your alley and also had quite a few different varieties to model different prototypes.

    Hi! I love your videos! Id highly recommend purchasing a USA engine from the maker "Broadway Limited Imports" or "Proto 2000" if you want to see all that American trains got to offer. Bachmann and IHC/Mehano, the engines you got, while decent, are far from the level of detail and running characteristics from the brands mentioned above, not to mention heavily overpriced for what you get. They are "train set quality" if you get what I mean. Enjoy!

    I own a few of these locos - Very surreal seeing them here!
    I absolutely love anthracite locomotives ("Camelbacks") and I have been trying to find one of the AHM 2-6-0s and I'm in the slow process of converting another loco into one. They're such Victorian looking things, with their less than safe crew setup. Very nice to see one here!
    Some random facts about the Camelbacks;
    - The faster ones usually had two firemen as was common on a lot of late 19th century express locos
    - Some of those larger camelbacks were fitted with a "Speaking tube" mounted between the two cabs to retain communication between the engineer and firemen, a bit like a steamship.
    - A massive 0-8-8-0 version was commissioned for the Erie Railroad, although I'd imagine it would have been pretty terrible to fire
    - The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad crews referred to Camelbacks as "Snappers", as the driving cab being sat right above the driving rods presented a huge danger to the crew should a rod bearing break.
    - There's least one recorded incident of a Camelback locomotive running away due to the engineer passing out and nobody realizing until it was too late.
    - It's illegal to build any new Camelbacks, but not illegal to operate them or rebuild them. If a replica were to be commissioned, it would have to have at least one original part to be considered legal.

      @@SamsTrains Oh yes - I immediately recognized that 4-6-2, as mine is equally "grumpy", although strangely, despite lubricating it in different ways and making all kinds of adjustments, the valve gear on these seems a bit stiff.

    The Camelback has an astride cab because of the anthracite coal smoke was too thick to see in the back cab. They were mainly used on the East Coast because anthracite coal was mined on the East Coast of America.

    That Pennsylvania pacific is a USRA light 4-6-2, a standardized design. Model companies love the USRA stuff because many railroads bought them and it's therefore appropriate to use the same tooling to produce a load of different models. Interestingly, the Pennsylvania railroad was famous for it's Pacifics, but never owned any of USRA design.

    Something I'd recommend investing in is a Bachmann GP40, they're pretty cheap if you look around often enough, they're very easy to come by on eBay.

    Great Video, Sam. Here's some help on what you have there:
    Southern Pacific GS-4 No. 4449: The "Special Livery" you couldn't remember, is the "American Freedom Train" livery of 1975/1976 and 2001/2002. The locomotive was selected to pull the Bicentennial celebration train, over most of the route across the 48 Continuous States. It' again wore the scheme, in 2001/2002, after the September 11th, 2001 Terrorist Attacks. It's Based out of Portland, Oregon, still runs a few times a year (double-heads with another Portland loco, Spokane, Portland & Seattle E-1 No. 700; a clone of Northern Pacific's A-3 class- the SP&S was a Subsidiary of the Great Northern Railway and NP!), and it's one of my favorites, as my Father got to see it in 1976, in his Army Days. These were "Destreamlined" during/after WW2, as the SP had to say that the "GS" stood for "General Service" rather than "Golden State". a "War Baby" (term for steam locomotives built during WW2, with heavier materials, instead of sought-after light-weight alloys), GS-6, No. 4460, "The Forgotten Daylight," is preserved at the Transportation Museum in Kirkwood, Missouri, near St. Louis.
    The 4-4-0, is based also on a Southern Pacific Design.
    The 4-6-2 Pacific, is based off of the USRA Light Pacific design of WW1 vintage. It was a very popular design, among the "Government Standard" designs put down by Mr. McAdoo (the Infamous Woodrow Wilson's son-in-law!). One, belonging to the Atlantic Coast Line, is Preserved in Florida. Mehano locomotives are on the less-expensive and generic side of things; I have a Pacific like that, and it runs okay. Just go easy and be loving with the machine; Pacifics were commonly used in light freight duties in flatlands, so don't worry about it hauling freight.
    The 4-6-4 Hudson, was an adaptation of the Mehano special-made "President's Choice" train sets that the Canadian food brand, released over the years. The Hudson in-particular, was a Canadian National K-5-a, of 1930. It was the second largest of the 3 Classes of Canadian Hudson-type locomotives (Canadian Pacific's H-1 class: 65, including the non-streamlined, and streamlined "Royal Hudsons"; CNR K-5-a class: 5 ; Toronto, Hamilton & Buffalo J-1/ex-NYC J-1: 2). Two of the K-5-a Class, are preserved in Canada. Fun Fact, the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific ("The Milwaukee Road") originally conceived the 4-6-4 Hudson, as the "Baltic" type in 1925, but went Bankrupt, and the New York Central, introduced them in 1927, and became the "Hudson" type, because they raced along the Hudson River, north of the New York City electrified division's end. The F-6 class of the Milwaukee Road (which this is supposed to "resemble"), were the only Hudson-types to operate in the American Pacific Northwest (my Grandfather worked for the o'l Milwaukee Road, thus I have a strong affection for the line.).
    The Camelback Mogul (2-6-0) may be an adaptation of the Mehano SP 2-6-0 Mogul, but looks like some later machines. Camelbacks were actually outlawed from construction of new locomotives, due to the dangers of the position of the Engineer's cab (boiler explosions) and the difficulties of communication with the Firemen in their precarious positions.
    The real Canadian National No. 6060, is preserved in Operating Condition in Alberta, Canada. The U-1-f class are also known as "Bullet-Nose Bettys" because of the Nose-Cone resembling women's "Bullet Bras" from the 40's and 50's, as well as their speed and capabilities pulling trains. There are 3 Preserved across Canada, including No. 6060.

    That special GS4 livery you mentioned is the American Freedom Train; Souther Pacific #4449, along with Reading Railroad #2001, served as motive power to haul what has to be among the patriotic train in history, the American Freedom Train, which criss-crossed the nation in 1976 to mark the USA's bicentennial hauling various pieces of prominent Americana (ie the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, the Liberty Bell, etc) in a bunch of old baggage cars that had been repainted in a glorious red, white, and blue paint scheme.

    The camelback's cab astride the boiler design raised concerns for its crew. The engineers was perched above the side rods of the locomotive vulnerable to swinging and flying metal if anything rotating below should break. In addition, the fireman was exposed to the elements at the rear so thats why its illegal

    What a coincidence. I was just talking with a guy in Sarnia that helped restore the CN 6060 with the use of water pump from the train on display in Sarnia. Interesting story with the restoration. It was lead by a guy who was the last fireman on 6060 and was laid off while in Jasper. Without job he ended up in Ontario and after successful career was able to save 6060. (With the water pump from 6069 on display in Sarnia)
