I recall "Sir Ralph Wedgewood" used to run through Welwyn Garden City where we lived throughout the War. Yet you say it was destroyed? My memory must be 'going' then! But I do remember travelling up to Kings Cross with my Father and sharing a compartment with Sir Nigel Gresley - from Welwyn Garden City to Kings Cross. When I told him 'Your engine is dirty!' he sent me a works photo of it - we were behind his name-sake, of course. That was in 1940 - I still have the Works Photo from him.
Despite the Q1's very undressed appearance the sheer simplicity in wheel configuration for a tender engine really gives it that WorkHorse feel. It wasnt made to pull them fancy trips from city to city, this one got the work done as it shouldve, quite frankly however I prefer the more industrial side to the railways so the Q1 is really a beauty in my eyes. Excellent running session as always. Cheers.
Hi Sam bit of history on your 8F. She was built at Crewe works for LMS and went into service in October 1942. Served for 24 yrs, 9 months, 22 days. Sadly, she was scrapped in December 1967.
I'm not a rivet counter but in mix freight-passenger trains, the coaches are coupled behind the freight cars, separated by a flat car or a tare box car. The reason for this combination is that passenger trains are heavier and putting them at the back would help tighten the couplers, secondly if the freights catches fire (yours is full of tank cars so...) the separator car will protect the passengers.
Engine cabs had blinds which covered the windows and doorways for night running, to hide the glare from the firebox. German bombers often followed main lines to cities on night raids. German aircraft did shoot up railways here, but as the war drew on, RAF air cover got better and better, as did anti aircraft guns, and large railway installations would have had barrage balloons, keeping enemy aircraft higher. Stations in London and elsewhere were bombed - but the trains kept running. The 'Shire' guide, 'Railways In War Time' is a fascinating little book.
This reminds me of N&W 1218’s history. She was built specifically due to the wartime demand for locomotives and entered service in 1943 along with her sister locomotives.
Nice video Sam but had to have a little chuckle at the very important wartime frieght that the Q1 was pulling , Smiths crisps , Weetabix and Kit Kats . Keep the old moral up Eh ! Noticed Bully at 20.25 .......Peter.
+Peter Shaw haha thanks mate - I don't have much variety in freight, so I just used everything! I should have said that it was just war locos, not the rolling stock haha ;) Cheers mate, Sam :)
I thought you would concentrate on locos that served with the armed forces or are particularly associated with the wars, like the Q1. For WWI I would have gone with the NBR class J36 “Maude” (available from Hornby) which was a loco sent to France in WWI and later named after a general, maybe the GWR Dean Goods 0-6-0 (Mainline version available second hand on eBay), some of which were sent to France and the Great Central/ROD 2-8-0 (available from Bachman) which became the LNER class O4, quite a few of which were built for the Government for war service, and some of which were bought by the GWR and LNER after the war. For WWII, while I approve of the O1 and the Stanier 8F, I would also have included the WD Austerity 2-8-0 (available from Bachman), and the 0-6-0ST Hunslet Austerity (after the war the LNER J94). These were all also used by the War Department.
GREAT VIDEO GREAT LAYOUT ONE CORRECTION THE Q1 IS NOT AN UGLY LOCO IT IS A BEAUTIFUL LOCO AND ONLY ONE REMAINS AT YORK I SAW SEVERAL OF THEM ON SOUTHERN REGION RAILS AND THEY ARE A FANTASTIC LOCO
It got the name b12 from LNER but before that under GER it was known as class S69 or the 1500 class originally designed to haul express passenger trains but during the end of ww2 they were used to haul US ambulance coaches
Hi sam just saw your video yes I know it's a few years old but can you give me the name and types of war trains from ww1 what might have been used on the front of ww1
Hi Sam, Cool video depicting the war in Britain. you run some lovely locos today especially the 3700 class (my favourite loco of all time) and the 8F. poor Gadwall but not all of her was lost, her tender was repaired at Doncaster and given to a rebuilt P2. Sam could you maybe do a video like Chambs 123 Wrenn video where the viewers got to pick a loco to see, you could do this as a running day. Cheers Mate cool video!, Lewis:D
+Lewis Shields Thanks a lot for your comment - glad you liked seeing the City of Birmingham, they are fab! That's cool about Gadwall's tender too, I never knew that! And yeah, my 'Winter' running days were all picked by viewers, but I'll definitely do something like it again! Cheers mare, Sam :)
+Liverton -Simon Thanks a lot mate! And yeah, the 8F is pretty noisy, and I'm not too sure why, she seems nice and smooth despite it though! Cheers, Sam :)
It seems that 48154 was made in 1940 by Beyer Peacock & Co. and weighed in at 72 tonnes. Oddly though her boiler pressure was relatively low at 225lb/sq.... an interesting Loco!
that B12 looks a lot like the train James should be based on even though it not.it even in James's pre sodor colors and wheel configuration to.it a beautiful looking tender engine
I notice this is all standard track and is not combined with a roadbed such as Bachmanns's E-Z Track (nightmare) and Kato's Unitrak. Is it secured to the floor or is it just sitting there? Most of the time I try to use standard sections, it's very annoying and barely works.
Yeah that's right - in places it's secured down, but in other areas it's free to move around a bit - that way I can modify the track if necessary! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
+Northern Soul Express Thanks a lot, sorry about the rolling stock but I don't have a great deal of variety in freight! Thanks for the info on Ralph, I found that out when it was too late! Cheers, Sam :)
@Super2442 29 I wrote that comment before the term Bullman was coined. It was me commenting "cow" on every video with the time stamp that gave him enough attention to warrant giving him a proper name. Go back to any video from a few years ago, I'll be there. I don't do it so much now as I'm busier but you get the jist.
Great video! Nice to give it a theme! Could you please do a video on express passenger and express freight for me. I think it would be a very interesting video and many people would enjoy it. : )

I hold a special place in my heart for the Q1.
Me too - such a fantastic and unusual class! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Same here, its one of my favourites
Neville been based on Q1 we’ll remembered from Thomas stories
Did anyone else see that the city class is derailed on the thumbnail? Ha, ha, that's a fun little Easter egg.
haha very well spotted - not many people have noticed that ;D
Happy New Year,
Sam :)
I noticed that once I read that main comment.
I did
I noticed it to
Me too

Hi thanks very much for the comment! Yeah you're dead right - they're so businesslike, which is what I love about them!
All the best,
Sam :)
I Love model trains Ho my name is Colin besio
Henry and Neville were war heroes?
Yeah I guess they were! :D
All the best,
Sam :)
oh and Edward too as well?
No.
Kyan Koh and spencer was one too
Kyan Koh not quite Henry’s basis it has an 2-8-0 wheel arrangement
I've heard that Edward James and Thomas when was in the war as well
Yeah they would be actually, if they were built between 1939, which they were!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam bit of history on your 8F. She was built at Crewe works for LMS and went into service in October 1942. Served for 24 yrs, 9 months, 22 days. Sadly, she was scrapped in December 1967.
Hi mate, thanks so much for the history on her - much appreciated, and great to know!
All the best,

Good one, Sam. I love Q1's. Good to see how little has changed on "the Railway" over the years!
Yes you are right, this is true! Though maybe crazy things happened during wartime, who knows?!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Do you have a Polar Express model
It's a Baldwin I think
Hi Jonah, yes I have a Birkshire, but it's not the same number as the Polar Express sadly :/
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains ok does a company make a Polar Express model like Hornby does Thomas and Friends
Jonah Hex Lionel makes the polar express in ho, s, and o gauge.
Lionel's HO Polar Express model is terrible. Get the Bachmann with the Pére Marquette 1225.
It is a Lima.

Wait. go to 8:30. There is a cow on the back of the Q1's load, but when it reverses, its gone
I know! I was amazed to catch it on camera - I never noticed it while I was filming! He does turn up from time to time!
All the best,
Sam :)

The Q1 is at the NRM in York! 👍
Absolutely! I've seen her there - she's so impressive! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains have you been to the NRM in York?
The B12 is still in LNER liver as NE was one of their war liveries
Ah yeah, I remember someone else telling me that too - thanks for the info!
All the best,
Sam :)
Excellent running session, would like to see more of just running trains with a theme or not.
(4)8154 built Crewe, October 1942. spent most of its life around the north west/Merseyside
+Simon Carey Thanks very much for the info - duly noted!
Cheers,
Sam :)
The black steam engine is Neville from Thomas and friends
Yep that's right! :D
S69/B12 - GER, presented in LNER black livery of WWII, so these guys were around during both wars
HI Alan, thanks a lot for that - yeah that's what I was thinking, they served for an impressive length of time!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
I have seen the Q1 at the national railway museum in York
Me too! She's fantastic isn't she?? :3
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Idk why but ever since I saw the episode of Thomas that Neville came I always had a love for that type of engine
haha yeah me too! :D
What about the E2 or Thomas? The E2 Class locomotives were built before and during World War I.
Yeah they would have been great it this too - I might have to do another war trains session soon! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Nice video Sam but had to have a little chuckle at the very important wartime frieght that the Q1 was pulling , Smiths crisps , Weetabix and Kit Kats . Keep the old moral up Eh ! Noticed Bully at 20.25 .......Peter.

nice running session and different idea like the war trains idea and love the bachmann war set
+layout 123 Thanks a lot mate, thought I'd try something different - glad you liked the Ambulance set, it's one of my favourites! :D
Cheers,

My favorite train out of that entire video is the Southern Railway Class Q1
Ooh good choice - I love those too! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam can you review the sound thomas please?
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Very nice, I do like this set!

I didn't really have enough suitable locos for that at the time - these days I could definitely do that! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
A lot of short lines did that by using freight and coachs cars in the USA.
Ooh interesting - I didn't know that!¬ :O
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
GREAT VIDEO GREAT LAYOUT ONE CORRECTION THE Q1 IS NOT AN UGLY LOCO IT IS A BEAUTIFUL LOCO AND ONLY ONE REMAINS AT YORK I SAW SEVERAL OF THEM ON SOUTHERN REGION RAILS AND THEY ARE A FANTASTIC LOCO
THANKS LAWRENCE, I THINK THEY'RE QUITE BEAUTIFUL IN THEIR OWN WAY TOO!!!!! :D
Thanks for watching,

Fantastic video!! the info was great and so were the locos!
+Why Not? Thank you very much, really glad you enjoyed it! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
I like how agile the b12 looks with the short freight train.
+Why Not? Yeah I think so too - I've always preferred them with short trains! :D
+Sam'sTrains I agree.
@@SamsTrains there is a myth in Thomas and friends that a B12 named Alfred friend to kill Gordon and henry
It got the name b12 from LNER but before that under GER it was known as class S69 or the 1500 class originally designed to haul express passenger trains but during the end of ww2 they were used to haul US ambulance coaches
where did you get that cool kit-kat covered van wagon
I found that one on Ebay - they do turn up from time to time!
All the best,
Sam :)
Hi sam just saw your video yes I know it's a few years old but can you give me the name and types of war trains from ww1 what might have been used on the front of ww1
There's a lego station in there as well at 14:52.
haha well spotted! :D
Great video Sam really interesting. Thanks, just set my one up today first time, and it all works lol, got the tornado express.
Thanks very much mate! That's fantastic to hear - glad it all worked for you! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Sam'sTrains Thanks I can not pick any locos because I haven't got Facebook but could you do it in the comments next as well.
Cheers mate.
Lewis:)
Yeah no problem mate, you could have made requests any way you like - I think all of them came from comments anyway!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains all right thanks Sam.
Thanks,
Lewis :D
His Q1 is beautifully weathered
Thanks Zane - that one was done in the factory, but yes it's very nicely done! :D
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
Hi Sam, the Q1 is a beautiful loco, how dare you say otherwise! lol. Excellent upload once again...keep sharing your videos...cheers Kev.
+Caius Martius Thanks mate, I've had a lot of comments about the Q1, she must be very popular! Thanks a lot for watching!

Fun fact, the city class in the thumbnail is actually derailed
Yeah most people knew that
@@harshalhosany2 yep
Anybody notice the TARDIS?
haha very well spotted! :D

Sam'sTrains this is a very good and nice and every synonyms for good and nice video and I will subscribe and like the video
Really enjoyed this one, more military please...
Thanks mate, more coming soon hopefully! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Another good loco choice for the A4 would have been Dwight D. Eisenhower, since it was named after the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces during WWII.
I didn't know that Lucas - thanks for the tip! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Very nice session and theme Sam, I think I have a lot of the same locos. Was the 8F a little noisy, or was it my old ears. ..Simon
+Liverton -Simon Thanks a lot mate! And yeah, the 8F is pretty noisy, and I'm not too sure why, she seems nice and smooth despite it though!

Fun Fact, my great grandfather fought in a war.
Blimey, that's very cool - he must have been a brave guy!

Same here
We have a 2-8-0 siting on display in Meridian just look up Meridian and Bigbee 116 to find more info
Ahh sounds superb, I will look that up, thanks!

We are going to war bois
Are we?!?! lol!
@@SamsTrains thx
A very enjoyable and informative video. Great work!
I do love that 8f in this video. Did you know that the lner ordered some 8f's and re classified them as 06 locomotives
Thanks very much Sharky! No I don't think I knew that! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The BR 8F looks almost like the Black-5 4-6-0, also produced by stanier.
Yeah it does - you can definitely tell they were designed by the same guy!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Oh dear, the bogie in the thumbnail does seem to have come of the tracks!
My favorite would have been the City's, but I do love the Q1's too!
haha very well spotted Tom - not many people saw that! Ooh yeah me too - tricky to choose!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It seems that 48154 was made in 1940 by Beyer Peacock & Co. and weighed in at 72 tonnes. Oddly though her boiler pressure was relatively low at 225lb/sq.... an interesting Loco!
Ah very interesting - I'll have to read up some more on that!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
This audio was really good for 4 years ago
that B12 looks a lot like the train James should be based on even though it not.it even in James's pre sodor colors and wheel configuration to.it a beautiful looking tender engine
Ahh really?? That's pretty cool - I don't think I've ever seen a picture of the real James - I'll have to look that up!
Cheers,

The one on the the right on the thumbnail is actually Neville 😱
Yeah that's right - though he looks very different all weathered up of course :3
Thanks for watching,

Sam can u do some diesel trains
Hi! Yeah sure - I do try to show diesels from time to time! :D

I think you are right - I'm pretty sure I saw it there! :D
Thanks for watching,

i just think it looks weirder then the othere one gadwel mallard
Sam'sTrains C1 is in fact Neville
In q1 facts the name Neville is a very common name for a q1
7:58 I'm not sure that's a world war loco in the background. ;)
+Why Not? haha no, you're right there ;D
I notice this is all standard track and is not combined with a roadbed such as Bachmanns's E-Z Track (nightmare) and Kato's Unitrak.

I'm learning about WWII!

It's a little scary!
How do you learn to service model train

Thanks for watching,

The main picture for this video the city of Churro front wheels are of the track.
haha well spotted!! ;D
Good video, the trains weren't very accurate but the loco's were so that's good, FYI the A4 was named sir Ralph Wedgwood when it was destroyed

Yeah that's right - they did change her name!!

Gadwall wss bombed as Sir Ralph Wedgwood cause all the A4s were named after birds and I'm pretty sure she was bombed in york station
Yeah that's right - a terrific story, if sad at the same time!
All the best,

What about Flying Scotsman cause she's an A1 Pacific and theymwere used im the second war
