When I was a child around 8 years old in 1965 in Canada, I received a clockwork train for Christmas.
This included a 4 wheeled locomotive painted in Royal Green with black details and yellow pinstriping. It was made completely of painted sheet steel. Very beautiful, as I recall. And it had a large clockwork key.
Also a set of track about 1-1/2 inches wide, as I recall. And two coaches, painted green, yellow and black.
My sister and I had so much fun with this trainset, giving Barbie and GI-Joe rides on the train. And creating imaginary worlds with plastic cows, pigs and horses at the side of the track :-)

That photo is pretty cool, its from the A4 reunion, notice the 6 A4s, 2 (dominion of Canada and Dwight D. Eisenhower) are in north america and the other 3 run on the mainline (Bittern, Union of South Africa, and Sir Nigel Gresley), which is something that is never going to happen again. So nice to see them all together, but only Mallard really resides in the museum. Really wish they would run it!

The National Railway Museum really is impressive. I loved it the last time I went there, and I love the collection you had running in this video. I'd say the Star Class is probably my favourite of them all. However, I think Lode Star was actually the 4th of her class. No. 4000 North Star actually takes credit for being the first, or at least I think so.
Anyway, fantastic video, Sam. Keep it up!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks Greg - yeah I'm a big fan too! Oh yes the Star is fantastic - I stand corrected then, she's not the first!

Alright, not to put a fine point on it, but in the overhead shots (8:00 - 9:00) where the pub is in view, out back it appears a chap when off for a relief but passed out on his face. Every time I see it I want the bloke put upright. Anyway, another fine video. Great idea mixing in the train museum. G.B. owns train history. And rules with still working steam.
    Thanks for sharing...

I love the National Railway Museum, one of my favourite places in the country. Definitely saw a lot of locomotives, definitely a lot more than I have ever seen in my life. There is another LMS Crab in the LMS livery, no. 13065 at the East Lancashire Railway near Manchester and the City Of Birmingham is preserved at a Science Museum in Birmingham somewhere. However, my favourite locomotive is GWR City Class, 3440 City Of Truro. The Rocket Replica was built in 1970 or something.

Call me crazy but I'm thinking of pre-ordering the new streamlined coronation in blue from Hattons, £152 I think it was... Also those coaches are 2's, not 1's. 1's for steam era, 2's for late steam early diesels, 3's for HST and late diesels.

By the way City of Birmingham has been preserved in the Museum of Science and Industry in Birmingham, but in her final condition without the streamlining. In BR blue if I recall.(Not been there for a few years mind)
Fav for me was the Deltic, took me back to my trainspotting days on the ECL at Hadleigh Wood in North London in the late 70's when they were still in service.
Idea - A Bluebell Railway session. A great excuse to run Terriers, Adams Radials, the Dukedog, etc!!

A very good idea for a running session, such a shame that none of the National collection are in working order, would be nice to see some of the sole surviving class members running on heritage lines and mainline excursions. Also 4003 Lode Star isn’t the first GWR star class built, that was number 4000 North Star. Keep the faith - Callum

The NRM for me is a bit of a love hate thing:
I love the Nrm because it has saved many locomotives and preserved a lot of historic locomotives and carriages.
however i hate the Nrm because it has stuffed a lot of locomotives in the museum and the Nrm tends to be quite stingy and rigid when loaning and running locomotives. Many people don't realise that there are actually 2 m7's in preservation because one has been stuffed in the museum for such a long time that people have forgotten about her. I appreciate the fact that some locomotives may be too old or inadequate for mainline or Heritage rail usage but loco's such as evening star, Mallard and city of Truro are perfectly capable of running on today's modern circuit. Mallard hasn't ran since the 1980's and I'm more than certain that many people would love to see her run in preservation.
I appreciate the Nrm and it's motives but i feel that they should loan their locomotives to more Heritage railways.

Hi Sam brilliant video and a good suggestion for a video.:) I've been to the museum last month and Scotsman was there resting outside the where house. There are 2 replica rockets one is cut in half like the merchant navy and the other is in the works in pieces along with Sir Nigel Gresley undergoing overhaul it was built in 1979.As a suggestion you could do a Shildon Locomotive museum running session they have.LMS Black 5 #5000, battle of Briton class Winston Churchill #34051, class V2 Green Arrow #4771, GWR 28xx class #2818, GNR class C1 Atlantic #251, LNWR Class G2 super D BR #49395, a J94 in dark green #3850, and a BR green class 03 diesel.
