My thoughts EXACTLY Simon. EVERYBODY needs an escapism from the bad & the ugly. If we can't have a 90 minute period which makes us enjoy, cheer & forget about the outside world, I question just how much football should now be considered a sport.

The issue isn't with the cause, it's with it's origin and how it was misconstrued and you couldn't even have a debate about it. Now everyone is forced to, otherwise it's a potential career ender and the woke harpies on Twitter will have a field day, doing what they do best, ruin your life with baseless accusations.

You’d have to be seriously old not to have seen sport mixed with politics. Sport is global entertainment therefore it has a massive platform, consequently it has been and will always be a forum for those with a political agenda, who will obviously make their point in whatever forum where it will be most heard.

@D the world Cup in Argentina was what many would consider the first real entrance of politics into the football world. The best places to insight positive change are by getting into positions of power and actually doing something and/or by using media exposure to brainwash people into accepting their ideology.

Disagree with Simon. Sport has often been used as a platform for political and social causes. Some of the most iconic images in history were during sport.
This is not to say that all political causes will be widely accepted, but this idea that sport is an exemption from political issues is a misnomer.
Some clubs exist because of issues such as class and religion. For example Celtic (Catholicism) vs Rangers (Protestantism), Real Madrid (conservative, ruling class) vs Barcelona/Atletico Madrid (liberal, working class).

I think the flaw in this argument is that it is more idealistic than practical. Already, football and statements are inseparable. There are adverts, billboards, opinions of pundits and even player celebrations that all make statements that have the tendency to offend certain sensibilities. Making a statement by singing the anthem should be able to sit side by side with the boos of those who disagree.
