Farewell Dave Greenfield, you were an inspiration and the first true punk keyboard player ever! Your mesmerising wandering & hypnotic arpeggios will forever be held close to my heart and part of my young adult life! RIP! Thank you for the great music that will last for an eternity.
I love this performance -Dave on the keyboards just getting on with the job on hand. -JJ miming along to Hugh's vocals in the first half then trashing the stage during the solos. -Hugh also not caring one bit throughout and helps fellow bandmate JJ with the stage destruction. -And Jet Black on drums just boredly playing along until the keyboard solo when he starts air drumming.
The very first record I ever bought in 1977 at 20 years old . . More than forty years later and 10,000 7”singles later this is still the pride of my collection.
‘Something better change’ was my first 7” an ex juke box single with the big hole in the middle so you buy a little triangle centre thingy to play it on a normal record player. 😆
Rest in peace Dave, you were one of the greatest keyboardist to ever grace the music scene, you will be greatly missed! Thanks for all the great musical moments you made me feel and enjoy with this legendary band (till Cornwell's departure). Unmatchable.
Dave. The only one taking it seriously haha. I think this was one in the eye for broadcasters who wanted them to mime. Dave, was an amazing keyboard player. R.I.P
Had a great conversation with Dave backstage after the University of Essex gig in 1977. I was a student and the stranglers were one of the first "new wave" bands to play. R.I.P Dave and thanks for your time and music.
rip brother.... you were the ones making me discover the punk rock scene in London....at roxy club , nealstreet WC2...great days...always in my heart ...fly straight with the raven , Dave. Happy having met you and the band at FestivHalle at Halle Belgium ...
David Greenfield's organ and JJ's base coupled with Hugh's growl and Jet Blacks rock solid drumming made for one of Britain's greatest ever bands. Are they a touch underappreciated? Would they have wanted it any other way? I'd still love to see JJ and Hugh kiss and make up.
Dave Greenfield showing his professionalism during this performance whilst the others clowning around simply sums up the group. Keyboard driving the tunes-love it! I’m unsure if Greenfield came to Australia in August 2016 , but I cannot forget the night where the boys played in a small nightclub in Fremantle and all my dreams of the past came true. Pure genius Mr Greenfield and thanks for your sounds.
R.I.P. to a musical legend in Dave Greenfield! I actually remember this song from the movie Mystery Men and this song always stuck with me. It's very catchy and the music video is a humorous riot
Dave's a big loss, and a very accomplished keyboard player , as good as any of his peers.was more into Rock myself at the time, but the stranglers crossed and mingled with many genres. RIP Dave Greenfield
I used to play in a band with one of the guys from "The Specials". He told me he loved playing these TV shows because "you didn't have to play, just jump around and have fun." I was thinking: "Well, actually playing IS fun."
Friend in college turned me on to them in 76. Got to see them once out in California in the early 80's. When Huge left the band I stopped listening. They were a one of a kind and truly unique. Guess we all have to go some time. Make no mistake about it being young is great. Try not to waste it.....I didn't. Ok I need to get a grip on myself.
Oh dear, I hope none of you can lip read! Jean Jacques clearly mouths, [look away if you are sensitive], "F*ck off you stupid c*nts" @ 1:20 Excellent channel by the way, just found it today! Great quality and the Dutch are masters at sound.
Went there this August last, wonderful pub, lovely pint, chowder to die for! all in the most beautiful county in ireland, clare the lovely. Visit if you can, you won't be disappointed I promise!!
I love how they have fun with/make a mockery of the lip synching... and then there's Hans playing along to his bit verbatim like, "I actually can do this guys, check it out".
This is an even more hilarious experience than the video that is supposed to this videos' hilarious "cousin" :-) 1:26 (and then a bit later on J.J. and Hugh starts trying to demolish the coulisse itself - just WOW!!!) And the look in Jet's eyes when he sees that Hugh is doing the Hendrix "thing", then the arm swinging thing and then the jumping thing along with J.J., and then suddenly realises that there's "free bar" tonight :-) When the "take" was finally over, the production team probably shouted something like: "What the f*** are you doing! We can't air something like THIS!". And then demanded that the Stranglers did an alternative take. And then the Stranglers gave them what they asked for; a truly alternative take, where this time the drums wasn't even spared, as it was now J.J. himself that took over the role as the drummer. But nowadays the rights owners of what came out of the session, are probably more than happy that things turned how they did. Because they probably very well know that they're sitting on a potential goldmine :-) These 2 videos must in reality be the essence of 'Punk' itself; it was fun and no one got hurt. And even the coulisse survived (ok, you could argue if the drum kit itself survived - but in the end nothing comes for free, soooo... :-)
Jet drumming fresh air with his back to the kit and cameras is hilarious.

Absolutely!
I’m just now discovering them, after having discovered The Damned for myself only two years ago. Prog and Punk can be friends!
what makes this performance hilarious is the contrast between the keyboardist and the drummer
Remember the time bands acted this way on national tv, not even trying to hide the playback, but making fun of it? And we, the viewers, loved it.
They were THE coolest punk band in a plethora of cool punk bands.
I love this performance

One of the most hilarious music videos ever. The drummer is pure genius!
If you like this one, check out the other TOP POP video, it looks as if it was filmed the same day
Search Stranglers Dutch TV 1977
Do you think they even realised that the lead singer wasn’t “singing” the song?
@@MrGnastygnate
I doubt the cameraman realised!
I think they knew what they were doing. These guys are awesome!
No more safe Instas anymore...
The one where they are playing each others instruments is great

RIP Dave - this was your greatest tune!
Best performance with playback I've ever seen
But they look good! And sound good too😊
Rest in peace Dave, you'll certainly go to heaven, you're the only one who behaved in this clip
drop the mic!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
So wot
The others were showing what a scam totp really was and I say brilliant for doing so. That show was produced and presented by pedos!!!
Have you seen the other version where Dave is playing bass and the drummer is playing guitar?
incredible how good JJ is at singing just like hugh lol. great example how to stick it to the man.

They were huge, monstrous, in The United Kingdom but unheard of here in The U.S outside of college radio.

The frenetic energy of the band has worn me out just watching the video!!!!!
One word UNIQUE ❤️
Never understood how they didn't cross over big time...GREAT ROCK BAND ! everyone i played them for loved them
THIS is probably the very reason they never "crossed over big time" LOL
Brilliant showing top of the pops for what it was. Got to love em.
It wasn’t ‘Top of the Pops’
Brilliant Song, looks like the stage had a Earthquake ha ha . Followed the Stranglers in my time.

Another underrated band from the early 80’s.Love how they didn’t even bother trying to fool anyone about the lip syncing.
They started in the mid seventies
fantastic band live
you better watch out for the lip sync
Underrated? I fricking loved them as did any sane (and insane) teenager in the 1970/80s
Ive just bought an overcoat thats the same design as Dave Greenfield's here. He had style as well as licks. Top man
Dave Greenfield - make way for one of the greatest ...
They are pissed off because they have to mime, a lot of artists used to get annoyed about it at times
its brilliant the best TOTP mimed vid ever ,love it = also why the show died they dont listen do they
Elizabeth McGowan yeah I’ve seen a video of Sting just pissing about the whole time cos he was so fed up with it
Actually this attitude is rather childish. But here they handle their annoyance admirably :)
Don't go on then. Simples

The run down on the bass is epic.
