Jim going full heel on that DC access ad is an all-time Kayfabe moment😂
It's definitely up there with his "Shame on you!" tyrade on the Weapon X cover designer
🤣🤣🤣
Love Chris Bachalo's art. His run on SHADE the CHANGING MAN, where I first discovered him, is awesome.
Same. I’d like to see Ed and Jim give Shade some coverage. Those early issues were weird and great.
If it weren't for independents and the internet, the worst time for comics woulda been now or 2020. But everything other than marvel & dc encompasses so much these days, there is no way you can't find something to read
Yeah, the problem is that everyone's reading sushi, not burgers to the point where One Piece, just One Piece, a single if big Japcomic property could take Kayfabe's much loved American comic scene and torture it like Nanking after the Marco Polo bridge incident. The problem isn't that there isn't a bunch of material and ways of getting it. The problem isn't even that the American comic industry is trash. The problem is no one is reading that compared to what the meatball flag wavers in Tokio are outputting which means no money which means lack of incentive to make more which leads to a single Japcomic property eating your lunch before getting into anything else.
Ed! I'm crying laughing at your Superman's current situation speculations. "I'm tellin' you, he's kissin' a dude." Gimme that image on the cover of Wizard.
Christina Z is absolutely a real person. She gave me a portfolio review at SDCC 2002! - Khary Randolph
I really enjoyed those Cary Nord issues of DD. I always thought he was an underappreciated artist. He may have been bigger if he came up 10 years before working on First/Comico/Pacific books.
I have fond memories of Grant Morrison's JLA. Probably worth another look.
That Aeon Flux costume would fall apart the moment she took a step forward. Like Chung animation, it can only exist from one angle.
40:45 John Ostrander cut a fun promo on Grant M in Suicide Squad 58 by having a character called The Writer who claimed to be making up what everyone was saying and doing but died when he got writer’s block as a Werebeast ripped him to shreds
Jon Schnepp made that Death of Superman Lives doc. An amazing comic book geek tied to the whole comic book movie entertainment, making appearances on Collider. Passed away some years ago.
I’d be down for an interview with Judd Winick. I would love to hear his story the ups and downs of working in the industry , as an independent creator. I really enjoyed his work at DC. Plus he would have good stories for sure.
That pompous expression on Peter David's face is hilarious
Oh! That story about my old friend Sarah being on The Real World! It was interesting to hear about from a BTS perspective. What a time to be 16 and pen pals with a comic editor. I still have our old letters. We were friends for a while, but she retreated from online life a few years back and I finally lost contact with her. Very cool person, though.
"I'm guessing now, Superman gotta be gay. He's gotta have a boyfriend now right?" SO TRUE!!!
I remember Morrison having written the Invisibles at this time. I also remember reading his JLA run and thinkking the same thing you guys stated, "Man why did it take them so long to put all their big heroes on a team before this?"
Marvel treats talent like Disney Star these days, and they just produce crap. And I have 15,000 Marvel Comics, comparing different decades is interesting, but the 2020's is disappointing.
Gary Reed, founder and then publisher of Caliber, was vice president of McFarlane Toys for its first three years (during this issue).
Christina Z is a real person.
I laughed at the Shane “Hurricane” Helms reference, he used to buy comics at Capitol Comics in Raleigh NC where I used to work
I was friendly with Sarah Becker after her Real World thing. She was working at Dreamworks Animation, I think? We hung out for a minute. I don’t recall how we even met. Weird blur of a time, the 90s..
That Waid/Kubert Ka’zar is surprisingly fun - over the top, of course. I’ve been picking it up in back issue bins.
Warren Ellis did DV8. Jim got it!
As a tangent to what current Superman could be, it'd be interesting to hear what you two think of Ram V's current Detective Comics run.
Chris Bachelor never finished the second Death miniseries, Buckingham took over the full art chores and managed to keep the feel consistent.
it cut off before the marching orders! read what? what should i read??? i must know!!
This cosplay section looks like the beginning of the story of how Adrian Puente went from Gambit to supervillain.
We stand with Adrian Puente!
About Morrison - I think that it could be that (at the time) he was less open about talking about Magick in a more mainstream publication like Wizard, as opposed to a place like The Invisibles letters column, where he hilariously explained to readers about sigil activation earlier that same year. Magick does seem to get talked about more in interviews during the late nineties and beyond.
(His documentary Talking With Gods is available on youtube).
Also look up "Grant Morrison DlSlnf0 Con" to see that persona really shine. *spelling error deliberate. I think the actual word gets the entire comment auto-censored.
To further expand the Jon Peters’ infamy, beside the 2 properties mentioned, he was given an opportunity to make a Sandman movie as well, which Neil Gaiman said produced the WORST script he had ever read! It even included a giant spider! It is a funny story he tells if you look it up on TH-cam.
"Does he have a following?"
"No."
Shi Daredevil came out in early 97
Part of the issue with Liefeld and Image was that he had started Maximum Press and was soliciting and publishing those books (Battlestar Galactica) outside of Image to sidestep the fees that Image Central took. Jim Lee did the same with Homage, so I would imagine folding Homage back into Image was compliance against having a separate company that competes with Image.
Please do The Long Halloween. Sale's work in that is utterly sensational.
Y’all should check out that Peter David Supergirl #1. It is surprisingly dark…
Access fans crying in a corner right now😂
Those Sailor Moon cartoons would come up around 7am before I went to school on weekdays. TNT had Ultraseven as well.
Why they make Superman look like Shane McMahon
"Superman gotta be gay by now"😂
I was reading mostly the maxx, vertigo, dark horse books and digging in the back issues. Marvel dc were rough at that point
One of the many things i prefer about comics from the late 80s early 90s compared to what came after is the ads. The Sam Keith wolverine hulk is a good example: the art is good enough you could pretend youre reading from a good era, but those ads are there to remind you you aint
dang my teachers never offered me comics
it seems like christina z was a real person. there's photos of her on wiki
yeah im pretty sure the daredevil shi comics came out
Ed, OINK is really a great great comic! (Do not reader the digital colored remake, only the first edition which is painted with real... huh... "paint"). There were 2 stories : "Heaven's Butcher" and then "Blood & Circus". I remember reading an interview from the creator where he ended up almost insane because for Blood & Circus he had to paint a full page a day in order to make the deadline ! The result is a much more raw style, but nonetheless really cool!
I remember waking up at 5am to watch Pokémon in like 98
it would be fun to see you look at the karl kessel daredevil sometime since its a comic that no one looks at, talks about, etc. besides some dedicated daredevil fans no one cares about comics like that.
The youtube channel Near Mint Condition was live streaming an interview with Fabian Nicieza last week and I put "KAYfabian!" in the chat. Somebody replied with crying laughing emojis. No joke, Kayfabian was complaining about how Marvel ruined his New Warrior characters in their Civil War crossover. Hilarious.
I wasn’t a big new warriors fan but I remember that book being hot for awhile. It dose suck that they didn’t try to develop the new generation of characters and ended up chucking them away with Civil War. That being said because I wasn’t into New Warriors it did give me a sense of stakes where high right away in the story. I was woah they wiped out these characters!
Re: hot shotting - Ed’s pretty close. Superman did come out as bisexual a few years ago. It was during the period when Clark Kent had left to join the Authority and his son Jon Kent took over as Superman.
Wokeism, Political Correctness, DEI, etc have destroyed modern comics - until the Big Two quit pandering to these fringe audiences, lifelong collectors like myself, newbies and comic shops will suffer. 🇺🇸🚫🇨🇳
im not saying that the DC Marvel team up guy is cool but I do give it to them to try and I think thats great. But I think omnibus are becoming more popular then to buy the reg comic
