Wizard once printed an application for Dr. Doom at a pizza restaurant. I found it so funny I framed it and placed it next to his statue. I miss this book.😢
Man, this issue takes me right back! It was my first published envelope art. Juggy and Shatterstar playing thumb wrestling! I still remember drawing that. Keep up the great work guys!
Been waiting for what seems like FOREVER for you guys to get to this issue of Wizard Magazine, only because I have a piece of Drawing Board fan art that appeared in this issue, the Sandman drawing at the top of the Runners-up page!!! So cool to see it on Cartoonist Kayfabe!
When my parents sold our family home, I was tasked with moving my collection. Trades and Singles were boxed and boarded, but sadly Wizard mags were sacrificed. Not before I clipped out EVERY How-To and made my own book. I also clipped out every quality image I could find, and made 3 collage posters - I was very proud of these Wizard DIY projects
This was my very first issue of Wizard as a kid and I was hooked. The industry might have been in a down slope but 10 year old me didn't know. Totally opened up a new world to me besides the Big Two and expanded my horizons. First time I knew about Watchmen at all, and that changed everything for me. Thanks for the trek down memory lane.
The goal of 2600 Superman is so mundane that you may not have wanted to complete it: Clark Kent must walk to the right across a bridge, but the criminals stole the bridge, so Superman has to find the pieces to repair it.
Not only did the Mask/Grifter book exist, Scud was released on Sega Saturn and the sequel was a PC only game. Both games lost to time, brought back by wizard coverage!
Scud hit Sega Saturn and it had an awesome dual gun mode for the player. It also had the controller only, and single gun mode. So so gameplay as it a 90's shoot on rails. Very cool intro video explaining the story and setup.
This was my first Wizard! I had every consecutive issue from this one until just after 100, I lived for it. I'm just a bit younger than Ed, and It's so funny to me how those 3 or 4 years make for such a huge difference in origin stories. I had no concept of the comic business imploding, I just loved the crazy variety of fly-by-night glossy-looking Image books, sick-looking extreme indie books I never read like Araknis or Avengylene, and bonkers "universe-shaking events" Marvel and DC were throwing against the wall. Felt like an adrenaline rush of creativity I had never experienced before and I was hooked. I can see all those things now for the desperate flailings they were, but as a middle schooler? Sheeeeet, it was heaven.
When I was in Paris 15 years ago, I visited a small cafe´. On the walls there was framed pictures of marvel comics all around. I did not have my camera. Anyway...enjoying your vids.
I died laughing when you critiqued the Valiant piece. So funny, I was looking up info on Gerhard recently and was curious why he left Dave Sim's company.
This year, with the publication of the second volume of Kamandi, I completed my Jack Kirby trades collection. I’m now hoping Marvel finally get around to a reprint of Kirby’s 2001: A Space Odyssey books before they go out of business.
It may have been Sandy Frank who pulled in that early anime. I know he brought in a lot of tokusatsu productions to the states, so he may have been involved in animation as well.
For real, around this time I had totally abandoned anything Image, Marvel, DC or anything else. I was into Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and other weird stuff like that. And whatever Manga I could get, I think around then Alita and Ranma were being published by VIZ and they had a few other books.
Re: your comments on Garth Ennis. Yes, you definitely should check out his Hellblazer run, it’s outstanding, but no, he did not follow Warren Ellis, Ellis’ run was years later. And DUDES, seriously you gotta read Bloody Mary. The story and art are absolutely bonkers, you will love it! There are two Bloody Mary mini series, just make sure you read them in the correct order (and the first one is the best). Lastly, he never ended up doing Wildcats but did take a job doing a few things at Image at this time including a Medieval Spawn/Witchblade. I know he does not have fond memories of writing the Darkness as he actually rips on it when he appears as a character breaking the 4th wall in the final chapter of his Dicks series.
Nice episode, guys. Ennis 's Wild CATs would have been bizarre, I don't even know why he said yes at one point (I know he did stuff for money, like Darkness, but not that much of mercenary, it seems).
Holy shit, Jim, I never realized that I have always gotten Bud Root and Bud Plant mixed up as well. Now I'm all confused. You mentioned Scott McCloud and it made me think of a good subject for a video: The Sculptor. Finally, Ennis' run on Hellblazer is stellar; this is more impressive given what a hard act Delano was to follow.
11 year old me could not be more disappointed that the Gen 13/Batman crossover didn't happen. That promo image got me so psyched when I first saw it. DC dropped the ball on that one.
The comics industy can be revive if these companies get back to superheroes and forget about gender and race swapping and just do comics besides I don't love my favorite heroes because of gender or race, I follow my favorite heroes because of great character and moral code!

I remember riding to vacation with my family and a single Wizard magazine would be enough to entertain me for the whole ride.
That Sandman fan art would be a great tattoo. Great job to the genius that drew that.
Golden Age with Paul Smith was great I thought but I was always into those characters.

I love this series of Wizard reviews. Thanks guys
Robotech Art book 1 has a history of Harmony Gold
Always love these Wizard episodes. Happy Holidays.
33:17 - Rudy Nebres IS one of the most underrated and unheralded artists. Everything he touches is magic.
The segue from Ennis to Acclaim is interesting as Garth did the relaunch of ShadowMan with Ashley Wood on art.
Do you guys have any love or interest in Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson's Transmetropolitan? That would make for a fun episode I think.

I have two sealed copies of the saturn game and sealed PC game. I was an early ebayer. Just wanted to brag

ah a wizard episode on christmas eve perfect!
My first issue. I remember getting from some retail store in Tucson, Az. We were there for my cousins wedding. I poured over this issue that week.
Wizard was a comic geeks monthly Bible!! ❤
Wizard magazine 68 was my first issue. Lol that was around the time i was just getting into comics. Looks like i was a few months late to the party.

the Howie Long movie was called Firestorm IIRC
Been watching your videos for a few weeks now and I can't thank you enough for kinda reigniting a love of comics in me.
You have so much content in back log videos to go through. Enjoy and welcome aboard , read more comics.
I died laughing when you critiqued the Valiant piece.
So funny, I was looking up info on Gerhard recently and was curious why he left Dave Sim's company.
I remember this issue, the art in the manga article floored me and those valiant dudes were so lame I couldnt believe it wasnt a joke

I think Wizard did compile their how to articles into a few volumes.
LOL. "I don't do manga..." might as well say, "I don't like comics."

Cool ad 8:12 I wonder if it's good.
Getting closer to 68!! ❤❤❤
Comics are dead: LONG LIVE COMIX!
Evangelion is still my favorite anime.
11 year old me could not be more disappointed that the Gen 13/Batman crossover didn't happen. That promo image got me so psyched when I first saw it. DC dropped the ball on that one.
That was a damn good game.
Slime. J Edgar - Water sports cover.
