Excellent video! I am also very meticulous with my oil change regime. My only recommendation would be not to go by Honda's oil change intervals. 5000 miles max between oil changes.
Good luck and enjoy your new truck.

Don,t leave oil cap on top of engine when lifting truck...cap can easily fall and hopefully NOT get stuck somewhere in the front end.

Change my oil every 2,000 to 3,000 miles because Las Vegas is hot and my miles are city driving.

I'm considering purchasing a new Ridgeline and I always like to see how easy (or difficult) maint is to perform. This isn't a bad oil change to do, but the oil filter location isn't ideal for changing it on the ground, although it's much better than my Frontier which is damn near impossible to grip and is mounted horizontally. At least this one is mounted vertically so you can easily prefill it.
Also, I would never run any oil for more than 5000 miles. Even if there is high molly oil installed at the factory, it doesn't need to be in the engine for 10000 miles, that's ridiculous. I always do my first oil change at about 1500 miles and then every 5000 after that. It certainly won't hurt anything to change it early, especially if you plan to use a high quality 100% synthetic oil. I use Motul 8100 EcoLite which has worked well in every 0w20 application.

A1 also includes rotate tires. I second not going over 5k. Primarily the long intervals is a way of showing low cost of ownership. if I got a new Honda especially a ridgeline from what we learned from out 16 Civic is do a break in at 1k then at 5k and 5k ever after. That filter I don't know why (is no way designed for a long interval ) I have trouble going 5k in it. since my wife got the car in 16 shes put 130k on it and we have used the OEM oil and filter up until this past 125k change. its had no problems so far but I really want to make the car last so im not taking many chances with oil changes. the dealer tells us every 5k which is good. Also before you change the oil warm the car up. helps oil drain better.

Good vid, I have the same truck, on my 3rd one. Just a few points, WIX oil filters vs OE (Fram clone) much better, also, the crush washer is designed to crush when you reached that proper torque, the plug is perfect. Filling the filter with oil before installation is a bad idea. WIX 57356XP for the Ridgeline 3.5L

One guy says not to fill the filter before you install it. It all depends what the manufacture recommends , from what I understand.

If Pennzoil is your oil choice, rather use Pennz Ultra Platinum as it has better add pack. Also, 0w20 and 5w20 have same viscosity at operating temp, so no worries regarding this one. I would stick to 0W20.

What do you think about Honda's VCM system and do you plan to install defeater? I just purchased a 2024 Ridgeline and I ordered the S-VCM controller for it. Planning to install it today when I do my 1st oil change. I only have about 1500 miles on the truck. This particular device was designed by a Honda engineer, which says a lot. If someone intimately familiar with VCM found it necessary to develop a device to defeat it, that speaks volumes to me. I haven't owned a vehicle with cylinder deactivation before now, but I've seen many horror stories of the damage these systems can cause over the long term, due to excessive vibration and vacuum pressure (engine mount failure, oil consumption, transmission damage, etc), not to mention the annoyance of feeling that harshness as you drive. Anyway, for $106 I figure it's worth trying out. I can always remove it if the truck starts behaving unexpectedly.

Honda has made several revisions to the VCM system and honestly the current one is so good I could not tell that the vehicle had it until shortly before I made this video. For me personally I would not sacrifice potential long term reliability for a minor improvement in fuel economy. If I did not plan on owning this vehicle for long it would be different. I'd like to drive this truck until the wheels fall off

@@LehewTechThere is no way of knowing how good (or bad) gen 3 VCM is until many thousands of miles down the road. I'm not suggesting that VCM will blow up your engine, but it certainly can cause certain parts to wear prematurely due to excess vibration. There is no way to prevent an harshness when shutting off half the cylinders, even if they're trying to hide it with harmonics thru the speakers. Installing a reliable defeat device is cheap insurance to my mind. I strongly believe that this device will improve long term reliability, which is the entire reason I installed it. On the other hand, VCM is at least somewhat likely to diminish reliability which has been shown in V6 Honda vehicles.

I took my 2019 Ridgeline in for a recall repair on faulty fuel pump. After numerous reminders that I had an appointment, I bring it in and they said "Sorry we don't have parts". Honda 👎🖕 Now they announced another major recall coming out for faulty motors. Going back to Toyota.

    • @LehewTech
      @LehewTech  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I believe Toyota has some fuel pump recalls as well. I had to replace a fuel pump in a 2020 Superduty with 6k miles.. the dealer couldn't get the part either.

I HATE where they located the oil filter. Honda engineers are brilliant but, they had a brain fart on that design.

8,600 miles on the oil! That's too much, no more than 5000 miles if you plan on keeping the vehicle long term. Preferably 3,000-3,500. My husband(certified lubrication specialist) yes that's a real thing lol, changed mine at 1,000/3,000/5,000 with an oil analysis done at each. It's a Honda so you should be good. Oil filter torque is 12-18 foot lbs, should be on the filter. Hope you have a blessed day!

10:14 and you're introducing unfiltered oil into your engine, which is never a good idea. I use the tinfoil on my cars, too, helps a ton, especially on my Honda Element where the filter will leak all over the subframe and control arm.

    • @paquesepas6696

@@paquesepas6696 LOL. Kirkland Signature Reynold's food service foil, article #31680.
Someone does make an official metal bracket that is magnetic and clamps into place so your oil spills out in a controlled manner when you remove the oil filter, but it's like 35 bucks. "Honda Element oil deflector"
I just use the aluminum foil method, works every time. I remove my passenger tire for ease of access, plus I rotate tires every oil change so it's part of the process anyway.

Yes Honda’s have break in oil. Yes, you should wait till it’s down to 15% or lower to change the oil on a Honda. Pre-fill the oil filter is a good idea so engine gets oil pressure right away. My Ridgeline now has 150,000 miles on it now. I have never had to add oil between oil changes. I tow a lot so I now use 5W 40 oil. No issues with oil usage or fuel mileage.
