Fellow white Canadian here. We need more immigrants of all sorts, not less. Every single place I've worked at has been between 1/3rd to 2/3rd immigrants and/or children of immigrants.
Plus as a developed nation the population is actually declining as people in general are having less kids then they used to (women working have less time for children and theres less need for children to help run farms.) The number of old people is starting to exceed the number of young people. The population will stabilise in a few generations but until that happens the country needs immigration to maintain its workforce.
Also the Chinese only controlled their population through the communist one child policy, which would be illegal in a democratic society.

Nice documentary! Keep it up. Remind me of my previous trip to HK & Macao. I've stayed there for 9 nights during my trip to Hong Kong 3 years ago. There are so many South asian & African living there & they will approach you to promote their service respectively. Just politely tell them you not interested, they will be ok. What I remember is everytime always having a long queue over the lift. And I have to standing with everyone up to 2-3 minutes. My guesthouse located on the 8th floor. There is one time I can't wait for the lift to come up, and I have to using the staircase to going down. Overall, depsite so many negative reputation. Chungking mansions is a safe place, I don't have any issue during my stay there though I was alone during my entire trip in HK (Solo backpacker). Just the room is a little bit uncomfortable, so small but worth it for you to have a good sleep & rest your body & mind after a long day walking around all the destination in Hong Kong. Chungking mansion are also a very strategic place to stay if you on a tight budget, near the MTR Tsim Sha Tsui station, Kowloon park, Mosque for those who are Muslim, not far from the Garden of stars, Hong Kong ferry point, Kowloon public fear where you can watching the Light of Symphony in the night. I wish I have a chance to visit HK one more time in the future. Hope this Covid19 outbreak will be soon resolved around the world so everyone can fly again to their dream destination.

Hi Drew. I first stayed at the famous Chunking Mansion in 1987! I remember not being able to get on the elevator as everyone rushed by me....my first stop in Asia...I learned the ropes quickly. I entered China (Hong Kong was a separate country) for an epic one month trip with zero western tourists. I have been back to both countries many times. Love your travel series.

I was in HK and PRC in 1991, there were so few western tourists that people recognized our group and could help us find each other. The Taiwanese-American girl in our group was practically a celebrity, we met many locals who wanted to meet her and didn't know there were people who were ethnically Chinese and fully westernized Americans. It was an incredible time to visit.

I've stayed in the Chungking Mansions 4-5 times, 2-4 nights each stay. Regardless of where else I've stayed in about 25 trips through HK, I have always changed money in CKM as the rates are best in HK. It's not as bad as Drew makes it out to be. Budget rooms in HK are all basically the same, whether in TST, Mongkok, Jordon, or elsewhere. Almost all cheap rooms everywhere in HK have bathrooms just like the one Drew showed. Chung King does definitely have Hong Kong's largest collection of curry shops, sweets shops, and related. Some of the elevators are a little odorous and some of the places on the upper floors are weird for various reason, but most people never see the factories, crowded dormitories, really cheap cafes, etc. It's a scene, and it changes later in the night, so later it does feel a little sketchy. But I love it.

I thought only I felt feeling weird and excited at the same time staying there.
But there are many hotels inside that building. Some are like Capsule Hotels with bunker beds, and some others are way cheaper with arguably comfortable spaces. You just have to talk to the locals to find the best bargain.
That place was truly an experience in Hong Kong more than the siteseeing itself.

    @PakWingWong-hn5ep 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

If you are a tight-budget traveler and want to find a place to sleep, Chungking Mansion may be suitable for you. Do not expect much on the quality of beds. Travelers should avoid horrible hostels in other mansions (e.g. Wanchai, Jordan, Yau Ma Tei). The dorm conditions are terrible with many beds with mattresses on the floor in a smelly, messy, noisy, and tiny room. The price is so high that comparable to a room in a 3-star (for a dorm bed) or 4-star hotel (for a so-called private room is next to a dorm inside the same apartment). Avoid.

I spent a couple weeks in Kowloon once. Only ate Chinese food a few times (hey, I was from San Francisco). Ate mostly in the Chungking Mansions. Every (carefully chosen!) meal there, whether Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Filipino or Middle Eastern, was outstanding. Didn't stay in the mansions overnight ... remembered the headlines ("Thousands die as teeming high-rise slum burns") Closet-sized rooms, no windows, 10 floors up, tiny sketchy elevators, broken escalators .... no way, José. Somehow resisted buying a genuine Rolex for $50 US. Still have nostalgic memories of Chungking Mansions even years later.

When I was travel to Hongkong, I stayed there. Even tho it has tiny spaces and hygene problem, it has AC and good wifi, with good price as well and really strategic location, I think it still worth the price

First time i stayed in Chungking Mansions was 1990. What a trip. The stairwells were cluttered with boxes of who knows what. Almost impossible to use. The lifts apparently haven't changed. They stunk back then. And my god, 24/7 there always seemed to be a 15-30 minute queue go get in the lift.
Yeah, Khyber Pass was a favourite restaurant then. Funny enough there was a military feel to the restaurants as they referred to themselves as messes.

Stayed in Chungking Mansions for a week in 1979, in one of the numerous backpackers. It was a fire trap all those years ago, sometimes taking 1-5 20 minutes to get down in the lift. I would assumes in those days that the stairwells would have been clogged with boxes etc.
But certainly met some interesting people while I was there.

    The mansions has been renovated.
My last visit was 25 years Ago. Then they had just one elevator and we had to stand inline to get it.
So pls don’t complain. This is a big changes than when we visited 25 yrs ago. Time fly’s

Chung King Mansion is THE true Hong Kong.
Without it, IT IS NOT the HONG KONG.
The best reporting of a Journalist ever.
Let it live on as it is under the same Brand Name and that means the Hong Kong is living for ever.
Every cities in the world needs a Chung King Mansion for its liveness.
Timely more VIDEOS uploading about Chung King Mansion are recommended the most.

The last guy said it... "Don't believe everything you see in the news." Drew, if you go to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia... try to visit a place called Batha... it is like a Filipino Town with lots of Filipino Restos and products.
