  • Oral health is connected to full-body health in myriad ways. In fact, conditions ranging from obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and even dementia are all directly connected to poor oral health. In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Todd LePine about how to address dental health from a functional medicine perspective. They discuss everything from basic oral hygiene to mercury fillings to root canals, and more. They also discuss cases they’ve treated in which there was a link between the patient’s oral health and their systemic health.
Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.

There was a story online I remember reading of a previously healthy 7 year old kid who suddenly got PANDAS, he had severe anxiety, ocd, hyperactivity, phobias, panic attacks, chronic sinusitis, high strep antibodies, numbness and tingling in hands and feet, neck pain, sensory and motor issues as well as vocal tics including barking sounds.
They eventually found he had a severely infected root canal he had done at age 2 and after they had it removed and cleaned, all his symptoms went away.

My mother was a bipolar paranoid schizophrenic, with frontal lobe dementia in her last years. My children have severe reactions to gluten, one gets seizures and one has intestines that bleed if they ingest gluten. I always felt that my mother had celiac disease, that contributed to her mental illness.

Would have liked to have heard about receding gums? Is that a nutritional deficiency, or more a function of age/brushing/etc?
Also, what about gingivitis.. does that also stem from the same problem as halitosis, namely oral biome? What are the specific strains of bacterial that constitute a good oral microbiome? And would DNAsmile test provide that type of data? For example, Prof. John Tagg studies the Microbiota (as opposed to the microbiome) and suggests his BLIS product has Streptococcus salivarius K12 , Streptococcus salivarius M18 , and Micrococcus luteus Q24, that are able to produce unusually large plasmids proteins (bacteriocin molecules), which are able to keep in check the 'bad' bacteria in your mouth and skin (Streptococcus pneumoniae , pyogenes)?!
Aside from xylitol gum, vit.d, oil-pulling, Dental Tooth & Herb Gums Tonic, Therabreath, lactobacillus salivarius probiotics.. any thoughts on zendium , carifree, or high-flouride toothpastes (>= 5000ppm) like Crest Gum Detoxify Deep Clean / Enamel Repair? Onnit MCT Oil Toothpaste (Cacao/Mint)?
Finally, what is the difference between the various functional medicine directories... iaomt, vs aadsm/mysleepdentist, iabdm, aaosh, etc? Certified in Airway Mini-Residency 2.0? For example, Dr. Rouzita Rashtian suggests to look for holistic/biological dentists, not just mercury-free/safe dentists.. and to ELIMINATE fluoride?!
BTW, I recommend the interview with Dr. Steven Lin on Rangan Chatterjee podcast!

You haven't mentioned whether it is good to use tooth paste with Fluoride or to avoid those kinds. A lot of controversy on that subject and I was hoping to get an answer to that once and for all.

    • @daniellespies6327

Fluoride is built in the enamel of teeth. It strengthens the enamel. You can look up the data on caries/cavities in the past and the moment fluoride toothpaste was invented. Or fluoride was added to drinking water. (eg www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2020/04/why-fluoride-water/606784/). You then see an enormous decrease in the number of cavities/caries. Fluoride only becomes a problem when, as with may things, you consume too much. But since you usually don't eat 2 tubes of toothpaste a day, you'll probably be safe. From what I see in my practice, people that stop brushing with fluoride toothpaste, develop (a lot of) caries/cavities within 2-3 years.

I have a very old mercury filling that is wearing away. I can feel that some is missing when I rub my toung on it. 4 days ago, I felt a sharp pain in an adjacent tooth. I noticed a bunch of painful soars around that tooth. Then, I started having pain in it. Can this be from an infection from the tooth filling. I went to urgent care and got a antibiotic. It will be 3 weeks before going to my Biological Dentist. What can I do about the pain until I get to my appointment? The pain is getting excruciating.

As mentioned in the video, a proper root canal treatment will not cause you any trouble. Dental implants are kind of the last resort and don't have eternal life either. So the longer you can go without, the better. It is recommended though, to have your root canals checked regularly.

The 5 high risk pathogens for chronic inflammatory disease: alzheimers/dementia, CVD, Autoimmune disease etc are not only swallowed, but they get to the other organs because they are vascularly aggressive through inflammed gum tissue (leaky gums). Dental hygienists are on the front lines of disease prevention. #Healthcarehygienist @healthcarehygienists our mission is to integrate medicine and dentistry by getting hygienists as part of every collaborative Healthcare team in the US and Canada. 😊

I have it also, vitiligo, ulcerative colitis and 4 root canals. I find myself that it is healing when Im exposed to the sun. (but dont use any sunlight cream, there are shitty chemicals in it.) If my skin got burned, after it heals, it makes new pigmentation. Also one girl on youtube have good results with vitiligo, and she have videos about the tips, suplements, how sleep is important etc. You can find some info, I think it is curable, but you need to live somewhere in asia or near the sea, so the sun is strong.

Plus, chewing will begin to become really difficult without my teeth. Also, are implants safe? It’s such a shame that we can’t trust conventional medical professionals (dentists and doctors) to keep us from harm.

I had my rootcanal tooth removed and tested as well. Just like Dr. Mark, my test results came back with many harmful bacteria . I am sure I need to do some sort of protocal to address these harmful bacteria, besides just having removed the tooth. I do have serious brain fog and memory issues... so it really worries me. Plus some other issues. I am finding it difficult , to find the proper help / doc, to assist me with this clean up process. I really need someone who is experienced and knows what they are doing.. not just try to sell me a bunch of expensive things. I feel my health and brain are suffering and need serious help. If anyone knows of anyone who can help me with this process ; I would be very appreciative of the info. 😊🤞🤞 peace & health

Contact a dentist or periodontist and have your gums treated, and more importantly, find out the cause. It could be familiy predisposition, a link with systemic diseases, nutrition, stress, oral hygiene, smoking. Oral health is important!

    • @MissSarahGM

@@daniellespies6327 Thank you for your reply! Yes oral health is very important! I have good teeth and oral hygiene, but have had this problem for a few years now (along with a weak immune system). I have consulted several doctors here in France. The last flare lasted almost 2 months. The dermatologist said it could be spontaneous inflammation with no bacteria or virus and gave me prednisone as a mouthwash. The dentists I saw said it looks like gingivitis rather than periodontitis. A family doctor said it is very common and I could do gum graft when the time comes. None of them explained the causes so that I could treat it and prevent the development of the disease.
I currently use interdental brushes daily, dipped in Hydrogen peroxide : the dentist recommended it rather than flossing; mouth washes (I found one with propolis). I also take supplements like vitamin C, Co-enzym Q10. Thank you for sharing any advice :)

Years ago I got a wif of my denture and almost passed out . The upshot of this experience was trying Oil Pulling . One oil pull and my denture smelled neutral .
To oil pull put a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and start alternately sucking and releasing . Sick gently so your cheeks suck in and then release . Do this for 3 or 4 minutes then spit it out . This will both give you good breath and good health .
Further try brushing with coconut oil .
