I am a guitarist/songwriter and have been struggling to find something that sparks my ears…this just spoke to me! I was smiling when certain chords were written from how beautifully crafted it is! MAKE THIS A RELEASABLE SONG
As a bassist myself, I am really tented to use programmed bass on productions because of how easy it is to sound right in the mix. The only reason I don't use bass libraries is to not hurt my pride hahaha
Also a bassist. I’ve found it easier to just play the parts correctly with the finished intent rather than messing around with programming it. Just me.
Hey, bass parts written by bassists are still going to have the knowledge of a bassist behind them. It isn't going to waste. Your midi basslines probably sound more legit than most people just fiddling around in midi. It'll stand out either way IMO.
as a basist with a Verry nice Ibanez bass that i use live and when band practicing i also use MIDI bass when recording stuff at home. Just because it's ALOT more convenient since i write down everything in guitar pro i can just export the midi track from GP, put it in reaper and load Umansky Bass ontop of it and it sounds amazing with llike 5 minutes of work
Right when I was getting more familiar with Nocturnalbass I am forced (yes, I have no choice) to buy this new library. Sounds incredible dude 🔥 Great work as always
I completely agree on all the points you made in regards to programming vs live playing. I love programming bass for metal for that consistency and tone. I can't afford 6 different basses😂
Whatever benefits you think the real bass have, to have them there is a lot of requirements and hustle for them to be "good enough". - Someone with skill to play it - Good enough bass guitar, fresh strings, correct setup (intonation, action, truss rod, tuning), set knobs appropriately. - actually recording it (input gain, consistent performance, takes, edits) All that and more are required EVERY time.
9:11 That deserves to be in an oddly satisfying compilation 😂 Love the little details that Submission Audio uses, they're really dedicated to their craft!
Dude….. no homo….. I love you hahahaha 🤣🤣🤣 I look forward to Thursdays so much because of these videos lmao Keep them coming brother! Love the content ❤
Absolutely want to see a continuation… and also the heavy idea you originally had for this episode… and I need to hear that chorus from the nocturnal bass song. Can you just bulk release season 2 so I can binge?
getting ready to finalize the writing for an ep with a friend and this inspired me anew woo! only problem is it is sleepy time and i am the sleepiest boi
You should absolutely continue this with piano. Maybe the shirts should be more traditional with gear since you got a drum set and 7 string you're using a lot. The top of the snare with thick riff Thursday in the middle and maybe some lines going side to side to signify strings (7 of course). Or 8 and the 8 and 7th are different colors
This song reminds me soo much of the type of music I'd listen to when I first started guitar (Polyphia, Plini, AAL, TheDoo). It's so inspiring seeing the actual process of how a song like this is created!
Absolutely love this riff. It’s giving Intervals. Just listened to The Way Forward and this is so Aaron Marshall. Just in time for the new intervals album and tour
Nice to hear your opinion on bass plugins. Can't disagree with anything you said. I also find that messing with bass on a midi keyboard in a DAW can be easier with certain rhythmic groove aspects of a section. Sometimes find cool rhythms that I otherwise wouldn't have tried
Crazy enough, I also have 2 dingwalls on my rack, but still use midi bass most of the time just BC it's kinda quick and easier. Plus I use it to make sure the guitars are in tune. I always "say" I'll re record the programmed bass, but usually don't.
That extra power chord made it really feel like some periphery / haunted shores but if you drop piano into this were going into earrrrrly Novelists era
Nick after hearing your thoughts on MIDI bass I’m curious to hear your thoughts on why one would not record with MIDI Guitars following the same logic you outlined as pros/cons. I would think the same reasoning could be applied to guitars, especially after you mentioned having tuning stability issues on this one given the low tuning and thinner gauge strings. With plugins like Hydra you get the things you mention: perfect tuning, access to articulations that might be out of reach, no string changing etc. What are your thoughts there? I’ve been thinking about this lately and am just like “should I just programming everything…”. It’s shocking honestly. Love your work, mad respect!
Owner of a Warwick Thumb and bass player for 16 years here 👋 This is just my opinion, but I do agree that Midi Bass programs have a lot of value to them. I tend to record everything myself but that's because I've been playing for years and it's my main instrument and it's just what I love to do. Like Nick pointed out, there are lots of benefits for using midi bass especially if bass isn't your main instrument and you want to speed up workflow with consistent results over different projects. I can even see myself using these once and awhile. However, when it comes to live music, each year I'm seeing more and more bands play live without a bassist and just use the midi. Of course, there are economic reasons for having one less member and it's easier to tour with one less guy. But as a bass player, going to see a band I really like and not seeing a bass player live really sucks and takes me out of it. I find this trend is growing, especially in the metal community, where everyone is using the same plugins and now a virtual bass playing guitar parts, it tends to start sounding all the same. Miss the days of unique players like Steve DiGiorgio bringing flavor and texture to a piece. But I guess that's just me being a bassist lol. FYI - Im not really referring to Periphery as their arrangement is they never want to replace Nolly which I respect (and he's still technically in the band). But it still kind of sucks I can't see him (or someone) play anymore. Great demo !
I haven’t watched just yet, but Just from the title, a person doesn’t approach a midi keyboard the way you would a bass guitar. A solid bass player really does have something special. But midi bass does help achieve that tone while being a guitar player who is writing a bass part. If that makes sense? lol probably not 😂
I just bought this the other day and flex pitched my guitar riffs to the bass and then mixed it up. I didn't dive deep into it yet, but this video helps. Did you have to import those key switch settings into Logic? Subbed also!!
Save yourself a click between unwanted takes: right click on record button and select Record Repeat. Then just hit "R" after each bad ask and it redoes record from previous playhead position.
I'd love to see you check JST heat. It's their new plugin. I've been using it and think it's super versatile and would love to see what you do with it.
Really cool way of writing! What’s the name of your electronic drums? Been trying to start writing drums your way too but don’t know what drum kit to get.
Well, the MIDI bass didn't forget to practice.
That’s exactly right
The MIDI bass is a pro sight reader.
19:48 bro just causally drops the sickest clean breakdown ever 😂 I need to hear this whole thing
Thanks broooo
PLEASE continue this riff next week, I absolutely love it and I'm DYING to hear the rest of that clean section!
Yh and possibly with vocals
Someone get Spencer Sotelo on this ASAP
Son of a gun you beat me to it, I was gonna say the same exact thing. 😂
Thursdays are always better when you upload bro I swear
Absolutely
This is such a PeripheRIFF! Love it!
That has to be one of the best riffs I've ever heard, god damn.
When that harmony kicked in…chefs kiss

This might just be the coolest riff you've written yet.
Thank you 🥹

Big love from the UK
I did NOT want that to end once it started…. Definitely need more on this so I can listen to it on repeat! 🙌🏽
That clean section was so on point and unexpected. Definitely one of the best TRT results yet and would love to see it get more time.

This is amazing! Love the energy and intensity and then the clean break.
I love the tones out of midi bass, but it's much less time consuming to just track bass myself. Great riffs and tutorial bud 💯
A crescent for the new grit-fiddle would be good symbol.
Please finish this next week! Sounds great man!

God I love TRT. Especially just seeing your excitement whenever you come up with an idea that sounds sick 😁
Thanks for sharing the excitement! 🤝

Such an insane amount of talent in one video. Keep it up !
Thanks so much! 🙏
Getting a Periphery's Scarlet track vibe !! Love it dude !!
Absolutely continue this one
CONTINUE THE RIFF
This riff got me Modern Day Babylon feelings
Nick. My dude. You need to do Thick Riff Week for this one.
Crazy enough, I also have 2 dingwalls on my rack, but still use midi bass most of the time just BC it's kinda quick and easier. Plus I use it to make sure the guitars are in tune. I always "say" I'll re record the programmed bass, but usually don't.
Gah dang I love this series
Nice! Keyan vibes. Please continue this one. 👍
The melodic riffs hit the hardest for me 😮💨
That extra power chord made it really feel like some periphery / haunted shores but if you drop piano into this were going into earrrrrly Novelists era

Come on...very rare for me to like something that much
sounds like a riff I'd find on a periphery record, very nice

I might be wrong but you seem to get more comfortable with the drums recordings week by week. Great riffs as always!
Thanks so much!

Hey Nick! Huge fan of yours. I absolutely love the sound of your drums and I was wondering which library you’re using for them.
GetGoodDrums PV kit
I enjoy your vids a lot pal. Keep it up!

this has potential to be top 5 TRT episodes so far
Sorta Sentient Glow, rad riff man!
Reminds me of 'Alpha' by Periphery a little, especially the beginning of the riff \m/
I liked the video for the under desk doggo
You mean my assistant engineer?
Thic riff shirts!
Dude how do you record your videos in real time and make it all perfect like you do? Do you have any videos on how you go about your whole process ?
CANT STOP SOLOING as a merch symbol! ;)
Can you explain why and how you are using FabFilter Saturn for the heavy guitars?
I'd love to see you check JST heat. It's their new plugin. I've been using it and think it's super versatile and would love to see what you do with it.
