Having an inside your head vocal helps tons. I found I hummed when i played bass. First a singer-songwriter for twenty years then getting into bass. Great lessons. You have taught me a lot. Thank you from Elora, Ontario, Canada.
There's another reason for "space " other than,so you can hear something else, its covert push/pull tension, not so much "heard " as much as felt,it let's the music "breath" a little better, and causes a "take it away " effect which will secretly draw you into the song, wanting more ,without even knowing why,BTW great work on this ,guys, these are nice, "pro" fills solid and simple, catch you on the next one
This was a good lesson. I would like for you to pick out 4 or 5 of James' fills, from simple to more complex from the end of the lesson. Then explain how he come to play the note choices.
LOL! James & Toby just brilliant, the best loved it, and fun watching you both jam and was having fun jamming along too (as best as I could) with some of them. How a very simple beat can create so much movement and rhythm and the fills where great although could not copy James fills, as just a newbie. As i play drums as well i have always thought it would be great to emulate some of the drummers fill on bass and this video has just done that.
Enjoyed this lesson with Toby and James demonstrating simple effective fills. I was expecting Toby to launch into The Temptations' "My Girl" from "The Cappucino" fill. Toby's idea of emulating drummers to construct his various fills was both interesting and effective. I've always been a big fan of ascending and descending chromatic approaches (the "Walkup" and the "Walkdown"). Toby's final fill, "The Space," which is the least complicated, is perhaps the most underrated of the five fills he demonstrated.
awesome! very effective fills, thanks for share it guys!....have you look for the bass method "Grooves for Electric Bass" by David Keif? i learn almost all groove in the book, but how can i play any groove learned in the bass book method to a sound?

Very useful. 1000 thanks
Really enjoyed this - less is more - creating tension and dynamics much better than trying too hard and doing too much. Thank you both.

I like the walk up/walk down. A great device

Nice. Very helpful.
Thank you so much, lads ❤
Very inspirational session. Loved it ❤
Stay tuned for more! :-)
excellent
Like to improve on bass fills
I enjoyed it too. For a bassist who just got out from under the bus James looks and sounds pretty much unscathed.

“Cappuccino!”
Once you’ve heard it, you can’t unhear it.
