    For the trailer brakes you should look at automatic trailer brakes. Basically, you have a hydraulic master brake cylinder built into the hitch mechanism, when the hitch gets compressed by the trailer overrunning the tow vehicle the brake cylinder also gets compressed applying the brakes.

    This was one of the coolest videos I've ever seen. What an ingenious setup. I think you've thought of everything and the quality looks top notch. I especially liked the quick connect hydraulic brakes and the dual sided yolk trailer assembly. I'm currently riding a couple recumbent with standard Co-pilot trailers. I love this lifestyle and I'm getting my 2 boys into it quite a bit too. Subscribed, liked and will be following intently!

    The Scorpion Plus gives you a higher sitting posture that allows you to be seen easier and SOONER. LONG DOUBLE WHIPS in the rear will let you connect the parallel whips to each other to keep them from scissoring. It will also give you a convenient place to put a super bright flashing light pointed backwards at the 6 ft. high or higher level. This gives ALL stacked up and impatient drivers behind you a super early opportunity to see you OVER the tops of the preceding vehicles. One of the most dangerous traffic scenarios involves stacked up vehicles quickly coming up behind you and during a rushed time of day. Morning, end of lunch hour, and late afternoon.

    I love it. I just purchased my first trike and can’t wait to start using it. It’s a used recumbent trike and needs some work, but I can’t wait to dig into it. It’s all aluminum from americruiser, had dual disk brakes and 20-inch wheels all around. It was $300 so it obviously a fixer upper. Can’t wait!

    Matt, your main challenge is not weather, fatigue, or even mud splashing up... it's the thousands of vehicles that not only need to see you but navigate around that beautiful, but WIDE trailer. Your cute little yellow flag and yellow frame are woefully inadequate. You need a BIG yellow and red reflector on the back of that trailer. Something like the Amish put on the back of their buggies.

    • @6maxgrinder549
      @6maxgrinder549 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mike, the trailer is slightly wider than shoulder width.

      I spend a lot of time on the road with various bikes. The biggest problem is not visibility. In spite of what people SAY about my visibility, the way people ACT is that they see me just fine, but feel entitled to take stupid chances when passing.
      This applies to about 10% of drivers.
      In my opinion, ALL automobile operators should be required to pass annual tests and a 1m safe zone around cyclists should be enforceable with heavy fines or loss or driving privileges.

    • @dehoedisc7247
      @dehoedisc7247 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Buettell There are many unfortunate persons of the Amish persuasion who are injured or killed every year, so the use of their substantial red reflective device is No Assurance of safety.

    So glad you are posting this. I have an HPV Scorpion plus 20 on order to be shipped to The Bicycle Man this coming week. I had it painted yellow for visibility purposes so I'm glad to see your decision affirming this. Also glad to have your specific comments about components. I will learn more as I ride, but am glad to see you recommend the stand up helpers and that you have the neck rest attached. I opted out of those, but am thinking I need to add them. Much food for thought in your postings and excellent video quality. Thanks. When you get to Cape Cod, let's go for a ride!

  • @shepatown

    I love this setup! If you haven't thought of it yet, you might want to consider mounting an AIRZound horn just below the brake
    handle so you can alert cars of your presence just by pressing down the ball of your hand on the trigger. I have had one on my trike and can brake and blast the horn simultaneously. It's so loud that I was able to alert cars behind me approaching from around a blind curve while riding in Yosemite - they slowed down and gave me the clearance I needed.

  • @velvetvideo
    @velvetvideo 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Great setup. Thanks for sharing your build. That trailer is FANTASTIC. A small front wheel for use as a grocery cart would make it perfect. I'm currently seriously thinking of ditching my vehicle for a do-it-all bike setup. I'm over 50 and was rendered homeless in part by the 2020 fires and I need something like an e-assist off-road farm utility truck-bike to get groceries and stay fit. I'm undecided about what to choose. I'm looking at quads like TrikExplor and Pony4...... tadpoles like yours, but with fat tires for beachcombing, or a delta like the Hase Kettweisel or Chooch. The options out there are staggering. I'm sick of our expensive, disposable, car-centric culture and want to do my part in changing the world for the bettter. Bicycle RV's are plentiful in places like Germany. I'd love to see more people develop these. For awareness I think everyone should watch "Stroads" by Not Just Bicycles.

    We used Arkel 'bent' panniers on our Hase Pino for our 2012 End to End in the UK. Even with waterproof covers, stuff inside still got damp, so I suggest - unless they have improved the design - you wrap crucial content inside plastic bags. Jiayou!

    • @JaYoeNation

      Of course. Everything in the panniers will be in dry bags. It's the trailer that I will depends on to keep things really dry

  • @Gimpdiggity
    @Gimpdiggity 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The drone box blew my mind. The whole video I was thinking about where I would carry my Phantom with me if I were going on a trek of some type...then you opened that hardshell and there it was. Amazing setup you've got there!!!

    • @JaYoeNation
      @JaYoeNation  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      took me a while to find one that fit to convert it over. Hindsight, i would like to find a box that would allow me the ability to store the drone with the props attached, so i dont have to assemble the drone every time.

    • @Gimpdiggity
      @Gimpdiggity 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I looked long and hard for a storage solution that kept the props on the quad, but ultimately found that most of the options out there in some way, shape, or form ended up putting some pressure on the blades from the egg-shell foam in the top of the case. This pressure, over time, I've been told can cause the props to very slightly warp.
      Now, I'm not sure if that's actually true or not...and if you're using the quad regularly it probably wouldn't be a problem...but for me it was enough to steer me away from storage with the props on. I'd rather take a few seconds to thread them on then end up with the quad not flying correctly due to some slightly misshaped props.

    Brother, I hardly know what to say. My first trip this coming summer will be to a local campsite and back, about 120 miles round trip. I'm so far from all of that technicality my head is spinning. I do really love the trailer. That would be great for mounting a solar panel for battery charging. Have fun and BE CAREFUL out there. God bless.

    I think since it's a trike with dedicated suspension, and even weight distribution...
    There's no need for air tyres. U can use a pager thinner tyre with solid tyre like tannus tyre. It will stay puncture free so that it's perfect for tours without fear of puncture

In both tours I road my 2005 Catrike Trail with just a rear rack and some Arkel pannier bags. Even with a simple set up like that I had some problems. I'm going to consult with Brian Goocher, he works at Jack's Bike Shop in Dearborn, MI. I'm going to build it and set it up to tour the trails around the City, and film the 2016 Dream & Gratiot Cruises. So yes I'm taking notes form you.
      Brian told me that they use a different brand than the Go Swiss, so I'll fill you in on all the details of the set up they do use when I see him next week. Maybe I can get a senior citizen discount for using your name lol, as for we 're all following you, as your continue to do your thing. I just sit back and imagine the possibilities! It's a leap of faith for me to go out there and buy that Trike but I'm going to roll it everywhere I go. Godspeed and safe travels my friend.

    Definitely a cool setup. 👍🏼 A mobile movie studio on 3 wheels! I would like to try a recumbent trike for touring someday. But right now for me a regular 2 wheeled bike works better for me. Just more mobile easier to transport via plane. Plus I like being able to bring my bike into hotel rooms when touring. I would imagine a trike set up like that requires some extra care. I’d be nervous to leave it outside while sleeping in my room. Anyway, i really enjoy your channel. And I know i will try a trike someday down the road. Cheers.

      Right now, in July 2022, Matt has built a brand new trike, a custom made AZUB with a lot of cool stuff: full suspension, 26" tires all around, and no trailer! It turns out that current technology allows him to have smaller equipment for his videos. th-cam.com/video/Ytq6DTf4v7g/w-d-xo.html

    awesome you are getting back on to the road. i wish i could do something like you are doing one day in my thirties, haha.
    i've forgotten, but do you have any plans to ride up towards siberia and meet all the nomadic peoples of the tundra and so forth? that would be really cool once you finish your travel through China and SEAsia->central asia(?)->up to buryatia and mongolia, lol :)

      +robert kim its not my plan now. it depends on how the trouble in the middle east goes. If it gets worse i may try to go around it by going way up and over.

    Not sure if this site gets monitored anymore and perhaps it's been asked/answered before but just curious, not counting any freebies or discounts provided by manufacturers what is the total cost do you think of your trike and trailer (not the drone) for your 2.0 trip? Also with all the high end components did you have any issues with replacement parts or repair availability along the way?

    • @JaYoeNation
      @JaYoeNation  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I ditched the trailer after a few thousand km due to my knee tearing up on me. Most of the other components were great. I did upgrade the gearing somewhat. You can search my videos for schlumpf and see the most current ones. As for cost.... I keep that to myself. You can find most of that info with a few calls. It was not cheap.

    Hey Matthew. I just watched your Taiwan video where you nervously loaded your folding trike onto a plane. Do you usually transport your trike without a bag or box? And also, now that you have a trailer on your trike, how do you transport that by plane? I am still contemplating trike vs bike touring. Thanks!

    Hey Matt, I had to replay it twice, and stop it the 2nd time, cuz I almost missed it the 1st time watching, LOVE THE character in your spokes in your right tire. Have you given any thought to re covering the character in retro reflective JaYoe Yellow? The headlights from cross traffic would probably light it up, while in motion, like a light bulb. I was just thinking, from a Safety point how it would improve your visibility.

    Matt missed episode on why you ditched your custom trailer. Would you provide brief explanation. Been trying to purchase y shaped hitch (trailer to Trike) no luck. Plan to ride across America in winter 2020 to Spring 2021 &
    need sturdy hitch trailer combo for gear 250 lbs. (includes 2 dogs * 1 cat)
    any info tips greatly appreciated. Difficult finding quality trike trailer able to handle 250 lbs.

    How big would you recommend for the steep mountains?
    Cassette/Cogset ? Any recommendations?

    A better equipped trike for your 2nd world tour. But my only concern with the trailer behind you is whether it's reflective enough when you're triking at night. Those heavy vehicles in the highways are driving fast and avoid being hit the 2nd time..

    how match milles are you doing each year? The trike must be great but you don't have protection against rain and wind.

    • @JaYoeNation
      @JaYoeNation  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve put about 20,000 miles on it in the past 3 years. The rain and wind issue is the same as a bike. It’s not so much of a problem.

    Here in the Netherlands we have a LOT of (sometimes "high-tech) bicycles. But the real issue I have is the safety with those high-speed low profile bikes. When you are in a car it's often very difficult to see these bikes, especially when they drive that fast. Especially when the weather is a bit drowsy/cloudy.
