I have had cats for the last 30 years. Right now I have 7 adults and 5 kittens. A couple of months ago, I tried the bedding pellet system as a cat litter. I wish I had known about this years ago. I bought the 3-piece pan and sifter at Walmart for around $15. This is such a money saver! And this is practically order-free. I will never buy the clay litter again.
I was at our local Tractor Supply Company where I buy the horse pellets and while waiting for my ride to pull the car around so the guy that was doing my carry out could put it in the car for me, I told him I use it for cat litter...He was amazed to hear about it! He had never heard about it.
How about odor control? And litter mess. I have 6 Cats and I used deep boxes as l litter boxes but they always carry litter everywhere. I'm thinking about making a big enclosure litter box from a large storage box. But I saw this pine litter And wanted to try it too. But because it is non-clumping, I am worried about the odor from poop.
If you put some pellets on the bottom try you can eliminate the use of the puppy pad, that you save you money as well as being more environmentally friendly!
I agree with not using the puppy pad! I love the idea of the pellets (some of my cats don't though!) for being environmentally friendly but using a plastic puppy pad defeats the purpose of using the pellets!
It’s easy cleanup especially if you have asthma. The puppy pad collects the urine so you only change it weekly. I love this system wish I would have done it years ago
@@dawnlofgren770 , Hi! I too have been recently "converted" from the traditional litter to the wood pellets and they are great!! However, I've found those puppy pads to be quite helpful. They (the pellets) do indeed soak up the urine and "turn" to sawdust but initially it is very "wet" sawdust and when it's covered it takes a while for it to turn into dry sawdust. It's not getting enough air flow being covered by the pan on top and the dry pellets to dry quickly. If the drying was immediate then removing it would be rather easy. But as I said, the pellets are initially saturated with urine and the pads help in soaking up a lot of the wetness that DOESN'T get dried up. I just gather it (the pad and the wet sawdust) by rolling or folding it all up and tossing it like you would a wet baby diaper. So, my point is, without the pad you would have to clean/wipe out the litter pan of urine and sawdust maybe a lot more often than you'd like to. Just wanted to share that observation. Bottom line, do whatever's is easiest for you. :-)
It’s a great system and thanks so much for sharing. Although it is an even better system to not use the wasteful puppy pads and simply compost the sawdust and wipe down the tray.
The 40lb bag of pine pellets fits perfectly into two plastic kitty litter buckets, for those who have those handy and want to recycle them. Also, the two buckets are a lot easier to carry and store.
I've been doing this for about 2 and a half years except i cut the bottom of 2 gatoraid bottles and then cut them in half and glued one half on each of the corners on the bottom of my sifting pan so that when I shake it there is about 1inch allowance in between both boxes that way I only need to change the bottom pad once a week and it helps keep the sawdust in the bottom and not sitting in the pan which will make the rest of the pellets disintegrate faster because of the moisture
I've been using these pellets since before COVID with the Tidy Cat Breeze system. Honestly, I love the pellets, Ace Hardware sells them very inexpensively; but I'm trading in the Tidy Cat system for the Arm & Hammer. A lot less rigging and hassle. @@Kathywake23 no...if you use sifting pans the 'dust' that has already broken down as it has gotten wet....goes to the bottom pan when you sift it, and the pellets that arent wet stay in the pan....just use a pooper scooper for the poop....one 40 lb bag is enough for me for approx 7 months! Love this system. Really does a great job. The sawdust falls right through and you just scoop. Bought the pellets a month ago 75% full. Used old Velcro rollers between pans and lined the bottom pan with trash bag. Use the third pan as a feet soaker. Perfect size. Could always use as an extra cat box in a pinch. Thank you for sharing.
First- you are absolutely GORGEOUS.. love those blue eyes.. (just a compliment- well deserved).. I have five indoor adult cats and have been using Tractor Supply Equine Pine Pellets for a year and absolutely love it! I pay $5.19 for a 40 pound bag. Saves me so much money! I don't use puppy pads. Too expensive and not needed. The poo is never damp...the pellets absorb the smell and moisture. The pellets turn the urine into sawdust and is so easy to clean. There is never urine or poo stuck to my three litter boxes. If in a hurry when cleaning the litter boxes I can simply wipe with dry or damp paper towels. I dump the sawdust onto an area behind my shed and rake it flat when I have time. It's not toxic to the cats, soil or environment unless a cat maybe has allergies and is allergic to it. My cats don't have any problems with it and also took right to it the first day of use. I didn't have to gradually let them adapt to it. I have babysat three kittens at different times and they took to it right away, too. It's environmentally friendly which clay litter isn't. I think it also looks more presentable in the litter boxes than clay litter. I will never go back to clay litter.
I have this one but instead of putting something to elevate the sifter I have an old litter box that has a guard around it so the cat doesn't kick the pellets outside the box. I put the arm and hammer sifter inside and it fits perfectly and is elevated about 5 inches or so.
I've been using the Purina Tidy cat sifting system and it sucks because they have a tray at the bottom with a pad. But when you remove the tray to change the pad, it leaves a hole at the bottom of the litter box and guess what. The litter and sawdust falls through the empty hole onto the floor. Who thought it was a good idea to create a system like that exposing the litter box bottom opening to your floor? This 3 piece system with puppy pads looks like it would work better for me. Only problem is the "Arm and Hammer sifting box" is quite small. If I could find one that is large or xtra large, to use pine needles. I'd be pretty set.
I don’t see the point of the pads when newspaper will do just as well, but I think you don’t need to use anything. . The sawdust is not very wet as the liquid is absorbed by the wood. There is no urine smell. I have made my own litter tray with multiple 1/4 inch holes which is stacked on an identical one where there is 1 1/2 inches gap between them. Works like a dream!
I saw someone sprinkled pellets in the bottom pan maybe 1/2 cup of so-actually even on the puppy pad if using and if the pee went through not as sawdust the pellets soaked it up and urine wasn't just in a puddle. Of course this is only one time after each sawdust emptying. Just starting my cats transitioning. We have been using Skoon. I have asthma but it's not really just proof. And very expensive! I'm excited-have 2 cats.
I'm suprised they didn't make the second pan so there was room for the saw dust to seep down into the pan. Now you have to put something in to raise the pan to collect the saw dust. Are you using pine or paper pellets. I have been using pine for bunnies (rabbit using is VERY STINKY and ammonia-like). Pro: covers smell and *some* tofu litters are flushable, as long as it's not mixed with clay. Also cleans up the wet parts easily even if urine soaks to the bottom of the pan, the litter comes off very easily.
You're a genius! I have the breeze box and the cats keep peeing on the lid and it spills over. It definitely has a design flaw. I have more options on boxes now.
I am intrigued with this system. I will be doing this system also. I know you have asthma as do I currently if I clean the litterbox I have a breathing problem I also have had asthma attacks. I hope this will help. Thank you.🙏🏽🌷🌼🌻🌹❤
I’ve transitioned my cats into this and definitely not as dusty as clay. Tracking is minimal. And I noticed the dust in my furniture also lessened. The smell is just wood smell.
I use pine litter but odor control when my cat poops is bad. Any advice on what to do about that? I have to scoop the poop immediately after she poops cause it smells so bad and so strong. Help!!
Nope, you have to scoop it pretty much immediately. But as far as regular litter i had to scoop that immediately too. So I'll take the no urine odor any day over the smell of regular litter. Change back if it really bothers you. I think the clay litter stinks. I've been using pine for two cats for a year I cannot tell you how many people say WOW if I didn't see them I would never know you had cats. Plus the other kind is so bad for them, plus they track the clay litter every where. They get it stuck to their feet and ingest it out chumps inside them just like it clumps in the pan imagine? I'll take the stinky poop any day over all the toxins they aren't eating now. 😊 it's an individual decision I think the wood smell is nice I associate it with cat litter now but I still remember how nasty the regular litter smelled. Good luck! It really is so much better for them. Not to mention the savings. I'm used to their poop times now and I try to wait till both of them go before I change it but usually I just take it out separately. Hope this was helpful! Oh some people use litter genies which you put the poop in and it seals it right up. So that's another option. The thought of all that poop in my room grosses me out thought. Lol I would rather just toss it outside.
Sorry about the typos, hope you got the gist! Also i don't even use puppy pads, that would just be urine sitting there in my opinion. I just sift the pellets every few days and dump the saw dust. Sometimes I don't even do that and they have a bunch of saw dust in their pan. I try not to let it get too crazy. If it does I'll just dump the whole thing. I don't use the sifting pans as their box any more. I got a huge one (circular) with a top and some stairs. I just sift it every once in a while. Take the poop out daily still usually as soon as they poop. Even with the cover I can smell it. Again it's all about what you can deal with. I would never go back to clay, clumping, Crystal litters. I even end up buying the more expensive cat brand pellets, the Tractor place isn't easy to get to. It's still cheaper lol
@@traciewilliams8385 Thanks so much! Yeah, I like that it is biodegradable and would rather use it over any other kind of litter. the smell is just a con we have to live with haha! Thanks again :)
Thank you so much! Me and My Significant other, we're absolutely fed up with cat litter tracking all over the house. We have 2 cats Milo & Rose will enjoy the new change too
I saw your intriguing video and purchased everything you recommended for our two kittens! Thank you for posting! They've used the new system with no problems today, however I noticed that the urine passed through the 2" pellet layer (purchased equine pellets at Tractor Supply) and onto the puppy pad. There was some wet clumpy sawdust forming, but still more urine soaked into the puppy pad. Is this normal?
This happens to me all the time my puppy pad gets wet so what I did was I put a few pallets in the bottom of the puppy pad to assist in soaking up the urine
the white sifter bin is ONLY to b used as a TOOL and not a mainstay. this white sifter bin is to b placed INBETWEEN the two solid floor bins; u put the litter in the solid floor bin (not in the sifter bin) to be used. WHEN you want to CLEAN the litter tray, u pick out the feces, then separate all 3 bins, put the white sifter bin on top of the empty solid floor bin, then pour the dirty litter into the white sifter bin which has the empty solid floor bin underneath it. shake vigorously or scrape around in the white sifter bin to make the loose sawdust go through the sifter holes. place white sifter bin of pellets into the empty solid floor bin. dump the sawdust litter into the garbage. replace the white bin back between the solid floor bins. done!
Okay so i’ve been trying this but it does not mask the smell when the cat poop i have to clean everytime they poop cause my whole house will smell like shit and it’s soft poop not hard idk what to do. i can’t handle the smell
I'm ready to buy this box online. I already have the pellets. Some bad reviews say it's too small for an adult cat. One cat I have is medium size but overweight. Has anyone found this box to be too small?
Hey there! This looks like a great system. I'm wondering, though, what the purpose is of having the two plastic trays in between the puppy pad and the bin?
There is no point of the puppy pad. If you follow the link to the pans she posted the directions literally say you put the regular pan on top followed by the sifter and then the other regular pan. This isn’t a hack. This is pointless and a waste of money and puppy pads.
Dollar Tree also has puppy pads, 3 X large for $1.25. That works out to about $18/year. I don't have Prime so that saves shipping. I avoid using amazon whenever possible. They treat their employees very poorly.
See I have a sifting litter box I got at wal mart but everytime I shake the box to get the shavings down all the pellets come out with the shavings so I'm confused as to how to get just the saw dust out rather than the pellets???? Can anyone tell me if I'm doing it wrong?? Or do I need to get another type of litter box???
Make sure the sifter has smaller holes. Some of the sifting boxes the holes are not made for pellets but clay litter. But the arm and hammer one is better than any I have tried.
I have a sifting litter box too, but the holes in the bottom of it are too big.. and the pellets would fall through. You will need to get a different sifting litter box with smaller sifting holes that won't allow the pellets to go through. This may sound strange, but Go buy a bag of pellets for $6, and take a couple pellets to the store with you and see if the pellets will fit through the sifting holes. Keep looking until you find oue that they can't go through. Also note that the pellets are cylinder shape, like a tube, so a sifting box with oval holes may work better at catching the pellets than a box with square holes (as long as the holes are smaller than the pellets, it will work).
I can't find that kind of litter box. I live in Spain and I found some similar litters but the pellet goes entire by the holes. In your link a don't see the litter box. Anyone knows one box that I could find in Spain? Thanks!!
Any sifting litter box should work. I've seen several others (with 2 pans and a sifter) on the market, but they cost a bit more. From Van Ness I believe.
I tried pine pellets once and my cat digs and buries his poop, and then there would be multiple pellets through out the bowl with little poop smears on it. How do you deal with that?
My cats like to dig a hole to the bottom then poop and cover. It gets stuck on the bottom as it dries. Then I have to scrape it off with a cat litter scooper. I imagine its the same with problem with wood pellets?
you dont have to use the pad, you can go without it and clean the bottom pan out once a day. maybe even line it with newspaper. its a little messier but its better if you dont want to use the pads.
I have a similar system to this and I don't use the pad. I dump the dust underneath once a week. Sometimes it's still a little wet and sticks to the pan slightly, but I bang it against the trash can and it all mostly comes off. If little flakes of sawdust are still stuck, I dont care. It's a litterbox, and it's the part you don't see anyway.🤷🏾♀️
I need advice. I really want a cat but I'm leaving as an exchange student in 1.5-2 years. I really want to adopt a cat, I've spent hundreds of hours (literally) researching and watching videos because if I ever become a cat owner I'd like to be a great one. I'm highly considering adopting a cat but I'm just now entering college. Part of my college's requirements is to complete at least 1 semester abroad, but my plan would be to complete a year and I'd be doing this in about 3 or 4 semesters (1.5 to 2 years). Would it still be appropriate to adopt a cat now? Despite my wishes, is it better for me to simply hold off on owning a cat until I am settled at a home? Whenever it would be time for me to leave to study a year abroad, I'd be leaving the cat with my parents, both of whom have expressed If I adopt a kitty they would not partake in its care. It is of my belief if I adopt and leave in 1.5-2 years for a whole year, by then I would have the cat obviously litter box trained and with regular feeding schedules, as well as a preferred vet. So effort from my parents to take care of the cat while I'm gone would be minimal. I genuinely am at a crossroads, and I don't want to be selfish in wanting to adopt a cat so I'd like to do what would be best for the cat, not myself. Should I hold off until I'm settled in a few years and live alone?
I would wait until you are home from abroad. It wouldn’t be fair to your parents even with a well trained cat to leave the cat with them. Cats are social animals and bond with their humans. They require love and attention. It’s not just cleaning a litter box and feeding them. It would be too stressful on all parties involved to adopt before you leave. Good luck on your higher education!
@@BoredorBananas thank you so much. I knew deep within that it wasn’t right to adopt now and you’re absolutely right on the necessity cats have for socializing. I’ll hold off until I’m done with my education so I can ensure the cat I get to adopt eventually gets the best of treatments. Thank you :)
You can try fostering with your local cat rescue to get to practice some cat love without the big commitment. They are always looking for fostering homes short term.
I just switched to this method, I absolutely love it but one of my cats is refusing to use it (choosing my carpet instead). I am wondering if anyone has had this issue and how to get the cat to use it. I absolutely do not want to switch back to traditional litter! Any advice is so hopeful!

You can buy the pellets in UK at pets at home I’ve bought them at Morrisons
Thank you for this, going to give it a try!
You're a genius! I have the breeze box and the cats keep peeing on the lid and it spills over. It definitely has a design flaw. I have more options on boxes now.
You can get a big thing of Vader and pine..at Walmart for 7.00 last a long time..Just dump ot every 3 day's and refill..
@deniseclater759 What is this vader and pine? I can’t find that at Walmart.
Thanks Jamie I will definitely be trying this with my cats 🐈
I am intrigued with this system. I will be doing this system also. I know you have asthma as do I currently if I clean the litterbox I have a breathing problem I also have had asthma attacks. I hope this will help. Thank you.🙏🏽🌷🌼🌻🌹❤
It should! It doesn’t kick up any dust at all that I have noticed.
I’ve transitioned my cats into this and definitely not as dusty as clay. Tracking is minimal. And I noticed the dust in my furniture also lessened. The smell is just wood smell.
I have a maine coon so wouldnt be able to find a sifting litter tray big enough
You can look at DIY ones on TH-cam.
@@JackieHardaker I found a huge sifter litter box so all good now :)

What have you noticed about odor??
Wow! I didn’t get notified of this whole convo. Thanks for helping each other out! ♥️♥️♥️
Stinky poop usually has to do with what you’re feeding her. Try other types of food.
Was Victoria Gardens Cattery the YT video you saw based on modifying the Breeze box?
Yes. She is linked in the description box. 😉
What about the smell?
What is the size of the puppy pad for lining?
I can’t remember. Just make sure it is a few inches bigger than the litter box.
I find with the pellets i get it doesnt mask the smell and im finding it hard to get different pellets locally
Make sure they are wood pellets or even feline pine pellets. Paper pellets smell.
It is normal for the first couple of uses
Can you please do an update?
Hey there! This looks like a great system. I'm wondering, though, what the purpose is of having the two plastic trays in between the puppy pad and the bin?
So when you you change out the puppy pad you have a bin to put the sifting tray into while emptying the dirty bin.
@@BoredorBananas Oh, I meant the two small ones that create space in between the puppy pad and the bin. 🙂
There is no point of the puppy pad. If you follow the link to the pans she posted the directions literally say you put the regular pan on top followed by the sifter and then the other regular pan. This isn’t a hack. This is pointless and a waste of money and puppy pads.
Sound good and more economic.
Thank you for sharing!
Would this work with dogs too??
Dollar Tree also has puppy pads, 3 X large for $1.25. That works out to about $18/year. I don't have Prime so that saves shipping. I avoid using amazon whenever possible. They treat their employees very poorly.
Great tip!
Brilliant! well done,
See I have a sifting litter box I got at wal mart but everytime I shake the box to get the shavings down all the pellets come out with the shavings so I'm confused as to how to get just the saw dust out rather than the pellets???? Can anyone tell me if I'm doing it wrong?? Or do I need to get another type of litter box???
Oh hmmm. I don’t have that problem. Maybe a sifting box with smaller holes?
I have a covered kitty litter box because of my dog .has anyone used the pellets in a covered box successfully? And how do you sift?
Good question. I hope someone can help you!
Does the cats claws get stuck in holes of sifter?
I guess no one knows
Instead of puppy pods you can use aluminum foil and bounty sheet
Which one is kiln-dried, Filne Pine or equine stall-bedding pine pellets?
Feline pine is kiln dried, safe for cats. Most of the horse brands are OK too but you'll have to check the bag it comes in.
Stallion horse pine pellets
I can't find that kind of litter box. I live in Spain and I found some similar litters but the pellet goes entire by the holes. In your link a don't see the litter box. Anyone knows one box that I could find in Spain? Thanks!!
Any sifting litter box should work. I've seen several others (with 2 pans and a sifter) on the market, but they cost a bit more. From Van Ness I believe.
You want ones with small holes. I had the van ness but the holes are too big.
Off to purchase today! Thank you (:
I tried pine pellets once and my cat digs and buries his poop, and then there would be multiple pellets through out the bowl with little poop smears on it. How do you deal with that?
How many cats do you have? Asking because I have 7. I currently have two storage bins as litter pans. I clean them twice a day
sandra miller I have 2 kitties. Otis and Opal.
Same 0.0 I have 3 litter boxes I change 2 times a day it’s so expensive and I have 7 cats toop
U should have 8 littler pans if u have 7 cats

Please
What??!! I'm definitely checking this out! Tfs
Jill Tripp haha! Of course!
I am anxious to hear how your cat likes it. Change is hard for cats. I'm not sure my girls would take to it.
Update us!
My boy was a little antsy at first, but it only lasted a day or so.
My teen boy was a little anxious too at first but after a day got used to it...so economical.the purple pads from amazon are the best.
One of my kittens peed and pooped on floor when I changed to this one, they've been using bentonite since birth. It really stresses me out
All 5 of mine have😄
My kittens wouldn’t use it at first. I added a bit of regular litter till they got used to it.
My cats like to dig a hole to the bottom then poop and cover. It gets stuck on the bottom as it dries. Then I have to scrape it off with a cat litter scooper. I imagine its the same with problem with wood pellets?
I just pour a lot of pellets because my cat likes to dig too
My cat used to dig a hole when we used clay, but she doesn't with the pine. She poops right on top. I don't think she likes digging in pellets.
No
this is very useful idea thanks
Its very important that the horse pellets are kiln dried
It seems that the puppy pads would be very bad for the environment. I’m assuming they are not biodegradable?
you dont have to use the pad, you can go without it and clean the bottom pan out once a day. maybe even line it with newspaper. its a little messier but its better if you dont want to use the pads.
I think they have environment pads at PetCo or PetSmart I’m the same way I’m aways looking 4 something saver 4 the planet
Hi. How often do you change the puppy pad?
Weekly
Where can I get the plastic trays that she used in this video that is the only thing I seem to be missing
U can get it at Walmart or Target or a pet store
Chewy sells them, better than Amazon
My pellets go through slits of shifter.
Strange!!!
How often do you clean it a day?
I scoop once and empty the tray weekly.
what’s the point of the puppy pad?
It’s catches any initial urine as well as makes for easy cleanup
Bored or Bananas ohh, i’ll have to try that than

@@JackieHardaker I have been looking into that! Thank you, I do think I will foster a kitten in the summer.
It's so cheap, we just dump the entire thing every couple of days.
Shouldn't you put the puppy pad in before the plastic separaters? Putting the pads in afterwards reduces the space for the desolved pellets.
You can if you don’t mind cleaning them n
That's what I was thinking & saw another video doing the pad 1st then put the spacers.
The only question i have is if the do a poop will it smell?
It does smell. I just get rid of it right away.
I got some of these with the cat I adopted I mixed them with traditional litter
Now I realize I fucked up gonna get wood pellets and the right cat box next week

Saw dust!
I'm allergic to pine pellets I think 😭 I really wanted this to work for ms
Oh no!
I’m sory
I just switched to this method, I absolutely love it but one of my cats is refusing to use it (choosing my carpet instead). I am wondering if anyone has had this issue and how to get the cat to use it. I absolutely do not want to switch back to traditional litter! Any advice is so hopeful!
1st time I added some wood pettlets to normal little
2nd time half and half
3rd just a sprinkling of normal litter through 1-2 inches of wood pellets
4th week/change day wood pellets only
Sprinkle about 1/2 cup of dr. Elsys litter attractant litter on top of the pellets about once a week. Solved the problem for us! Tip was recommended by Feral Felines in our area
cute of the year award just got owned
I scoop the poop and throw it to the toilet. Am I doing wrong?

Totally fine, even if wood pellets go with it. I've seen comments elsewhere from people who do this and they haven't had any problems whatsoever.
