Gentian is an herbaceous plant with a bitter root that has been used in traditional European herbalism, Ayurveda, and in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries: used as a digestive tonic, in recovery situations, and to support a healthy liver. Would describe the taste as extremely bitter. I used gentian root extract as a way to help gain over 35 lbs some years ago. Was very underweight and using gentian root caused my stomach to empty faster so that I could eat more. I could put 8 drops from an eye dropper in 8 oz of orange juice and could still taste it. Mind you one has to use more than 8 drops per use to get the affect that I was after. For a hard weight gainer I found it to be very useful for that purpose.
