A Gentian Root Taste Test: Funny to the Bitter End

  • Gentian is an herbaceous plant with a bitter root that has been used in traditional European herbalism, Ayurveda, and in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries: used as a digestive tonic, in recovery situations, and to support a healthy liver. Gentian root powder can be used in extracts, bitters blends, and herbal formulations. Watch members of the Mountain Rose Herbs team taste this root for the first time!
Spoiler alert: some herbs are better capsulated, added to foods or beverages that mask its flavor, or added into other formulations.

It's always really fun tasting an herb. But maybe not a whole spoonful! This video was just adorable. Good fun for all plant lovers!

A life lesson was learned that day: not all heathy things are delicious on their own!! Glad you enjoyed this taste test, we love getting all our staff involved in the process :) - Gracie

Would describe the taste as extremely bitter. I used gentian root extract as a way to help gain over 35 lbs some years ago. Was very underweight and using gentian root caused my stomach to empty faster so that I could eat more. I could put 8 drops from an eye dropper in 8 oz of orange juice and could still taste it. Mind you one has to use more than 8 drops per use to get the affect that I was after. For a hard weight gainer I found it to be very useful for that purpose.

I literally just tasted some in the middle of this video for the first time and wow it does taste pretty bad and I have a buggy tolerance for bitter herbs… my entire body shuddered

I've never tried it. My...to date...worst tasting herb I love is spilanthes; if I only had room for one tiny pouch in my pocket, it's probably going to be the one.

It's kind of funny, but you also just gave people a life-long aversion to a plant by introducing it in the worst possible way?

Luckily, most of our herb-loving staff members were still open to taking it again, just in a different form. It can only get better from here. ;-) ~Jessicka
