Fantastic!!! Oh Mary, I was born and raised in Switzerland, and I am accustomed to alpine herbs and natural remedies, Homeopathy is huge in Switzerland and most insurance plans will cover the cost if prescribed by a doctor. That being said. I have used digestive bitters for decades (I am 75 now). My mum made her own version with herbs she plucked from our alpine pasture and she bought the rest of the ingredients from an Apothecary in the village. Thank you for this recipe, I will make this asap. I rarely have digestive issues, but occasionally I like a Bitter after a heavy winter meal.
@@irenehaugen6143 na weil ich klein bin, als Kind rotes Haar hatte und Kräuter liebe - die Kräuterweiber wurden ja eine Zeit lang Hexen genannt, dachte ich komm ihnen gleich mal entgegen😁
In addition to the food, organization and preparing information I get from you, seeing our Lady and Lord in the background of the videos means so much to me. 💖
@@MarysNest Hi Mary, thank you for your response. I did not misunderstand you. Mary was a sinful, fallen human being, like the rest of us; albeit a much better person than I, I am willing to admit. We must only pray to the Father, in Jesus Christ's name, and not to Mary or any other person who is dead. God strictly forbids necromancy (see: Saul trying to speak to the spirit of Samuel). This is a serious issue in Catholicism, just as in Orthodoxy (the denomination that Jesus freed me from). I do not doubt the sincerity of your faith, I only comment for the benefit of my brothers & sisters in Christ, whom I love dearly. God bless you.
@@SteliosMusic if Our Lord respected and loved his Mother, even listened to her and obeyed her, then you’d be well advised to show her the same respect. Our Lady died just as Our Lord did, but because she was chosen to be the mother of God because and was conceived without sin, unlike the rest of us, she was taken to heaven, body and soul when she died. She has been given a very special place and intercedes for us, because she is still the Mother of God and no-one had God’s ear more than she.
Mary . . . Hi Sweet Friend! There are 2 things I want to say . . . 1) Came for the bitters, and stayed for the Hildegard! Loved all of that discussion -- thank you! 2) learning to make digestive bitters is something I've long wanted to do because buying bitters is expensive, and I find bitters so helpful. So thank you THANK YOU for doing this video! Blessings to you.
Wonderful information, Mary. We knew very little about homemade digestive herbal bitters but learned so much from you today. It is also nice that you collect and re-use bottles when possible. We are huge reduce, recycle, and re-use advocates. Hope you have a blessed weekend.
Hi Rob, So happy you found this interesting! Yes, we are huge recyclers of everything we can. Everyone in the neighborhood knows to give their trash to me because I turn it into a treasure!! Love to the SG family, Mary
Love Hildegard's bitters. You mentioned them a long time ago in one of your videos and I've been getting them ever since! Now I'm going to try making my own! Thank you for sharing.
@@dianasolfest7237 I usually do 2 TBSP. 8 oz water. Or if eat something that flares my crohns symptoms I swig it from the bottle. It works almost instantly.
Honey, I have crohns disease. Childhood shots destroy our gut fluora. Have you tried 2 tbsp of raw applecider vinegar with the mother (organic) in water? OR you can just swig it. You won't need anything else. I promise. BTW....the white coats know nothing about anything except pill pushing. Even doing that they don't even know what is in what they are telling us to take. My mom almost had a not so tested surgery to stop her acid reflux. Surgery was scheduled and I told her "ABSOLUTELY NOT!" I went and got her a bottle of Applecider Vinegar and she called me the very next day and said IT WORKED. She cancelled her surgery. You do NOT have to do what Mary is talking about. ACV is the key. BTW....eat as much organic as you can. The GMO foods are the cause. GMO seeds have a pesticide built right in them. It explodes the insects GUT!!! It does the same thing to humans. That is why GMO is not good for human consumption. Hope this helps. Let me know. You will know immediately.
If you only have a cheap vodka around and want to make it taste more smooth like a high-dollar vodka, you can strain it two or three times through something like a Britta charcoal home water filtration pitcher. That's how distillers do the "charcoal filtering" on liquor, only on a massive scale. (Last week I read a DIY recipe by ATK that taught me this trick: How to make cheap bourbon taste like expensive smooth bourbon. It should work for vodka too.) 😉
Your videos are always so educational and appreciated! I thought I had an iron stomach up until a year ago when I suddenly developed a lot of disturbing digestive issues. It took months to discover the cause was H. Pylori, and unfortunately the standard course of antibiotics failed to help. I’m going to follow an herbal treatment protocol (against medical advice) for the next few weeks in hopes of avoiding another round of drugs that the bacteria has become resistant to. The digestive bitters will be a helpful addition to my arsenal 😊. I’m trying to pare down on book buying but it’s so hard! I’m really interested in those you talked about and will have to look up the Chestnut School too. All of God’s medicine is here for us! I love spelt too :)
@@bettyausten9533 I haven't done it yet! Thanks for reminding me :) I've gradually gotten better over time but am still having some pain and gut issues, and yes, gas! How are you doing?
@@witchofthewildwoods3496 okay what helped you get better?...I'm going through h.pylori issue and I did antibiotics already but actually made me feel worse
Hi Mary! This is such an interesting video and subject matter. I hadn't heard the story of Hildegard of Bingen before and only because of a previous video of yours, had I heard of digestive bitters. You find and share so many things that have shaped my cooking, kitchen and well, life really. Your channel is the one I use for reference and has helped me in so many ways. Many thanks to you!
Hi Mary, thanks for the wealth of information… again. :). I too have some of those plastic lids that leak and have bought some gaskets that fixed that problem and now no more leaks. Description on item I purchased had this string of words to help find it on Amazon. Come in reg and widemouth. Canning Sealing Rings Gaskets Airtight Silicone Gaskets Apply to Unlined Leak Proof Liners Reusable Food Grade Silicone Seals Ring fit Ball, Kerr, Mason Jar Lids, I believe I got the idea/from Rain Country back then. Tfs
Hi Mary. I'm a new subscriber and absolutely love your channel (and your website.) The information you share is priceless, I've learned a lot. And your free guides have helped me get my pantry staples and other items organized so I can analyze the holes and stock accordingly. Another think I really appreciate is you provide links to ingredients and other items. Thank you very much and blessings to you and yours ❤🙏
Thanks for sharing as always, Mary. I also like to share this digestion with Turmeric Powder and Honey after each meal if you are having problems with digestion. Also, you can make a drink with warm water like a tea after each meal. It works every time for me. Sharing is Caring!
You add turmeric and honey to warm water? I'd like to try the same but I'm a bit confused. Do you make a bitters with the two? What do you mean share this digestion? Thank you!
Thank you for this post! I’m embarking on studying herbal remedies and have asked St. Hildegard Von Bingen to be my patron saint in this study and practice of herbs.
Great info for those who can afford it. Unfortunately I am a widow on Social Security that couldn’t possibly afford any of that stuff. I’m glad for the people that can. God bless you.
Yes it’s sad that in reality, healthcare happens outside the AMA Ins only pays for ineffective treatments n meds Poor ppl have no access to healthcare, just catastrophic care thru Medicaid/Medicare - if they got in a car wreck for instance.
I had never heard of "bitters" till l lived in Italy. I was introduced to non alcohol bitter drinks .. but I did not like them. Although, they do have a liquor that is made with bitters that is served after your meal. I was told that it was used after a meal to help with digestion. To be honest I just liked the taste. One of the only bitter drinks that I did like. So after meal time even at Italian restaurants you have a choice of an espresso or a liquor. When I moved back to the states. I finally figured out what the bitters drinks were used for. Until recently we hadn't been able to find them here in the US. Then low and behold we find them intermittently. Now I love them. Not sure what happened. One of my faves is San Bitters grapefruit. (non alcoholic). Since I have to take digestive enzymes now. These really do help.. I am looking forward to using this method. Thank you for your hard work and for sharing.
Love this Mary. Just a suggestion - while consuming it cold, that's problematic for the liver. Cold is the liver's enemy. But since it's a small about, perhaps hold it in your mouth to warm it up prior to swallowing the bitters. You're the best - God Bless You!!!
I am so grateful that you take the time to learn and so graciously share it with us! I always learn so much from you! I feel like I’m learning from you because you explain everything so completely! Thank you!!! May God continue to bless you and your family!! ✝️🙏🏻💙💗💙🙏🏻✝️
Every video you make, is a delight to watch. This digestive bitter is something I’m definitely going to try! Thank you for all you teach us, Mary. You’re a very sweet lady.
Thank you, Mary, for the information. I love learning about herbal help, and Saint history all in one. You are a jewel, and I love your channel. Thank you for all the time and education you put in each episode. I, too, always love your Madonna, and Holy Family in the background.❤️. God Bless.
Mary, I've seen many of your videos and they are always wonderful. This one though, this one is my favorite thus far. The info about the bitters was great, but then your sharing about St. Hildegard -- so awesome!!! I had no idea!! I always thought building upon the science of the Saints would be the best way forward in any field. Learning about St. Hildegard has been really amazing! I ordered a couple of books, too. Thank you so much, Mary! Really wonderful. :)
Can you use dandelion leaves? I like to saute them with onion and garlic in the spring too eat for my digestive health. On top of bratts or even just by themselves 😀
Just found your channel and I am enjoying your videos so much! I just had a cat scan with contrast and the Oral solution I had to drink really upset my whole digestive system! I happened to find you and this video, divinely synchronized I think! Thank you!
I can't wait to make this! Do you think it would help with gallbladder issues as well? After going keto I've noticed that if I eat more carbs or sugar I can get gallbladder pain (which I suffered from frequently pre-keto).
Not rly U have to wake up the gallbladder to release bile again Eating fat n slowly increasing it is key Taking the bitters can stimulate the gallbladder too but useless without eating fat snd increasing
I'm afraid the keto diet is destroying your gut. TH-cam won't let me post external links, but do a search for the Paleo Mom and keto to read the science behind why. Hope you're able to find relief for your gut issues.
Thanking you so much for sharing this subject about Hildegard and herbs very dear to my heart …I grew in Bavaria with a grandmother who extensively used herbs to heal her six children …can still smell them brewing on a low simmering pot on the stove … there is still a convent at a lake in Bavaria at Chiemsee called “Frauen Insel “where the nuns still Create herbal liquors with a recipe of herbs that is handed down from generation to generation to the nuns…check it out incredibly beautiful place…thank you for sharing the herbal books about Hildegard…stay blessed
Thank you for this video. I just bought my Husband enzymes yesterday and then this shows up on my TH-cam feed today. Everything happens for a reason. Can you please tell me where you buy your ingredients for this? My HEB definitely does not have them. Pickings are very thin in Corpus Christi. I'll gladly drive to the Austin area if this will help my Husband. Thank you.
Titos😊 a bit too pricey for me for my tinctures. I made a wonderful grapefruit bitter, so yummy, with all sorts of other herbs and dandelion root. In Germany people drink a small bottle of "Underberg" after eating too much😊 all proprietary herbal concoction.
Thank you so much for this recipe, Mary. At what age should Children start taking digestive bitters? I am going to make this wonderful recipe and want to know if the apple cider vinegar version would be best for children.
I’m so excited to find your channel!! I would love to know how you thaw meat. Most of my meat goes straight to the freezer when I buy it. Thank you for the wealth of information!!
Restaurant worker for 20 years. Best way is to pull and allow to unthaw in the fridge over night. For a speedier way place package into a bowl and fill that with cold water in the sink. Continuously allow a trickle of fresh cold water to run over the meat. These two methods are the safest to prevent food born illness.
I know there are fennel seeds (candy coated) available in the ethnic foods aisle of our grocery store, that East Indians and Sri Lankans pass around after dinner, and a Hindu physician advised chewing fennel seeds for digestion, so you are probably doing the right thing.
Wondering if this would be a good thing for me to take with the stomach weight loss surgery that I had almost 10 years ago…I definitely have absorption issues and have to take mucho vitamins!
What's the difference between this recipe & a tincture? Can you also use glycerin? I've watched your tincture video & saw you could use the 3 liquid items buy wondered if you get the same result using either vodka, glycerin or Apple cider vinegar?
Hello Mary, I am desperate to find a freeze dryer or a dehydrator with multiple shelving. I am so confused by everything that is out there. You’ve been using these pieces of equipment for a while may I have your recommendation?
Hi Carol, I am really please with my 9 tray Excalibur. Works like a charm. But I had to save up for it. They are expensive but they are VERY well made. Love, Mary
Check yard sales, thrift stores & people you know for dehydrator. I was given one, bought several, but willing to lend one out locally. Maybe someone near you would lend or give you one.
I doubt that the amount of dandelion root i this tincture is enough to cause problems but it can cause heartburn and it can interact with a no of medications and it can cause allergic reactions to susceptible people.
That is interesting. Some folks will use glycerine when making tinctures including digestive bitters. Just keep in mind that glycerine is what is known as a "trihydric alcohol" so if you are looking to go 100% alcohol free, you would want to use vinegar. Love, Mary

My mom always had Schwedenbitter at home😊

In addition to the food, organization and preparing information I get from you, seeing our Lady and Lord in the background of the videos means so much to me. 💖
What "Lady"? There is only one Lord, and His name is Jesus Christ; only one Mediator, Savior & Redeemer. We do not worship dead people.
Sorry if there is any misunderstanding. We don't worship dead people. We venerate Mary because she was the mother of our Lord. Love, Mary
@@SteliosMusic she was conceived without sin. God would not chose a dirty vessel for Jesus.
When I needed a dark jar or bottle and I only had a clear one I put it in a black sock!
Mary . .
Mary, I just love your cheerful demeanor in addition to your very useful videos.
Raw Applecider Vinegar with the mother forces your body to make digestive enzymes. It works for my crohns.
How much Apple cider vinegar - The standard 1 T to 8oz of water? 1 x per day?
I think that works well. And be sure to drink it with a straw to protect your teeth. Love, Mary
@@dianasolfest7237 I usually do 2 TBSP. 8 oz water. Or if eat something that flares my crohns symptoms I swig it from the bottle. It works almost instantly.
Would regular apple cider vinegar work?
Does that work with Crohn's I'll have to try it out.
I need this my Gut is a mess. Hey doctors don’t know Diddly doo about the digestive tract

Sweet Mary, you are such an amazing teacher, and I’m very grateful to be your student. Many thanks and blessings. ❤️
It should work for vodka too.) 😉
Exactly what I need! Thank you! And I always greatly appreciate your book recommendations, especially this author! Hugs!
Hildegard also was a prolific music composer as well! Her music is still performed today.
I had hpylori too 😭
@@nazcookz9948 I hope you’re doing well now ❤️
Same here..I took antibiotics but it messed up my gut and now I am always gassy...did you make the digestive bitters?
@@bettyausten9533 I haven't done it yet! Thanks for reminding me :) I've gradually gotten better over time but am still having some pain and gut issues, and yes, gas! How are you doing?

Yes it’s sad that in reality, healthcare happens outside the AMA
Ins only pays for ineffective treatments n meds
Poor ppl have no access to healthcare, just catastrophic care thru Medicaid/Medicare - if they got in a car wreck for instance.
This was so interesting! Thank you Mary. I sometimes chew fennel seeds after eating. I wonder if it helps.

I can't wait to make this! Do you think it would help with gallbladder issues as well? After going keto I've noticed that if I eat more carbs or sugar I can get gallbladder pain (which I suffered from frequently pre-keto).
Not rly
U have to wake up the gallbladder to release bile again
Eating fat n slowly increasing it is key
Taking the bitters can stimulate the gallbladder too but useless without eating fat snd increasing
I'm afraid the keto diet is destroying your gut. TH-cam won't let me post external links, but do a search for the Paleo Mom and keto to read the science behind why. Hope you're able to find relief for your gut issues.

I have never heard of digestive bitters. I'm very happy to. Thank you (tTt)
Hi Mary💖 u speak so well
I know there are fennel seeds (candy coated) available in the ethnic foods aisle of our grocery store, that East Indians and Sri Lankans pass around after dinner, and a Hindu physician advised chewing fennel seeds for digestion, so you are probably doing the right thing.
Very informative. Thank you for sharing!

Great information Mary, Would this tincture help in preventing Heart Burn?
I wonder same thing. Let me know if you find out please.
Thanks for this. I ordered the basic book. I didn’t know you could use vinegar. What about MCT oil? Would that work too?
Interesting question. Not sure. Maybe others will chime in.
Very informative thank you!
What's the difference between this recipe & a tincture? Can you also use glycerin? I've watched your tincture video & saw you could use the 3 liquid items buy wondered if you get the same result using either vodka, glycerin or Apple cider vinegar?
After preparing the digestive herbs, can you put food into it to predigest it?(and does this break stuff down as well as apple cider vinegar does?)

Can you use Fenegreek as a bitter?
I doubt that the amount of dandelion root i this tincture is enough to cause problems but it can cause heartburn and it can interact with a no of medications and it can cause allergic reactions to susceptible people.
How would food grade glycerin work for making these bitters?
That is interesting. Some folks will use glycerine when making tinctures including digestive bitters. Just keep in mind that glycerine is what is known as a "trihydric alcohol" so if you are looking to go 100% alcohol free, you would want to use vinegar. Love, Mary
VERY GOOD
