Actually, something about Poppy! Something I instantly was reminded of when seeing her are the old "accidentally trans/drag animal characters" in old Disney content. Because with many animals being better known by their male-characteristics they often ended up being depicted with those specifically male attributes, even when ment to depict a female character. That lead to things like full-antlered deers in dresses. Or bedazzled, colorful peacock ladies. Sound familiar? 👀 While humanity trends to dress up femininity with colors and frill, it's usually quite the opposite in the bird kingdom. In most species of birds the males are the ones with colorful plumage. Meanwhiles the females are usually comparably bland, most commonly a mix of nothing but browns and... more browns. Obviously for more interesting character designs (and because plenty of birds are ONLY know for their male representatives 🤦) more often than not the colorful design option is chosen. And again, because "colors=girl ooga-booga", this lead to many female presenting bird characters who display the male attributes of their species. So... Trans by design birds. 👍 Poppy is obviously VERY colorful and gorgeous. Knowing how bird work... She is a she who SLAYED. You go girlypop. 💅✨
The bright colors and funky characters drew me in; the compelling time period with LGBT themes, the horror, and the promise of more made me stay. I feel like because of some of the horror shots we’ve seen, this might have puppet body horror. Body horror is my favorite kind of horror so I’m really excited for that!

Thank you for speaking about the NSFW art shaming. I think the reactions people have to queer artists expressing their sexuality in non-childfriendly ways feels like an extension of cishet people labeling us as groomers and perverts for expressing our sexuality. Im a lesbian and I’ve seen a lot of instances in online spaces of people labeling lesbians as perverts when we discuss having actual sexual feelings instead of just being family friendly, I’ve even seen this mentality from other queer people which is depressing to me. I think the idea that nsfw artists, especially queer ones are all porn addicted freaks is really misguided and a lot of people who draw NSFW just do it cause they like drawing bodies and they dont think sex is a shameful thing that needs to be hidden from society
Yes! I myself am a trans person on the gender-fluid spectrum, who loves dressing exclusively androgynous-to-feminine, typically way closer to fem than the middle, who uses he/him exclusively, and I get why characters aren’t *like* like me, I’m excessively complicated when it comes to my gender identity and expression, but seeing nonbinary characters who I can relate to more really in any way is so great and makes me feel a lot better about my identity
Yeah it's sooooo refreshing. Nonbinary characters are always represented as androgynous and using genderneutral pronouns. As an enby myself who can't pass as androgynous and doesn't want to, I got so fed up that I decided to create my own nonbinary character who looks very feminine, clearly has female anatomy but uses he/him pronouns. Honestly, I'm thankful to creators like Clown who portray genderqueer characters in a less stereotypical manner

They’re non-binary and very very confident in that but like dressing feminine and having long hair and it makes me feel a lot more confident in myself, and I’m sure a lot of other non-binary people can relate
My understanding of Poppy is that with birds, male birds tend to sport brighter colors but culturally people tend to equivocate brighter colors to feminine, and this I feel happens in children’s entertainment leading to females characters with the showy characteristics of males of the actual species because it looks nice.
Thank you for the NSFW rant. I myself am very small Nsfw artist, and I do understand about Clown's first wishes of NSFW not drawn, and even stating maybe they will change thier mind on the future. I thought it was a really smart decision making that seperate tag so it didnt go combine with the Welcome Home tag. I personally headcanon Eddie as either gay or unlabeled queer, since he always only wears the rainbow flag, even in the pride illustrations, whereas Clown's doodles of Eddie's mom and dad show them wearing ties with the pan and bi colors, respectively, so i think it's safe to assume Eddie's family wears ties corresponding to their pride flags. Also, thank you for mentioning that stuff about NSFW art! as someone who's both autistic and asexual, i'm so tired of being infantilized or being called "pure", and even within the communities there's people with a weird sense of superiority that is really reminiscent of homophobic and purist ideas. It's fine if someone doesn't want to see that kind of stuff, or personally finds it gross, but they shouldn't invade other people's spaces designated for that stuff and tell them how to act and think. I'm also asexual with ADHD and a wife who is asexual and autistic. The number of times people have insinuated that our marriage is basically us just "playing house" is infuriating. If sexual intercourse is someone's measure of a relationship's quality then they've got a LOT of emotional maturing to do, and yet we're the ones being infantalized. But yeah despite both being asexual, we both tend to read/view sexually explicit content if it is part of a fandom one of us is active in. Not wanting to physically do the deed does not impede my ability to engage with it as a concept. I still get people who will tip-toe around the absolute most well-known vanilla sexual concepts as if I'm a fucking 7-year-old though. I'm a full grown adult. Just say "fuck" I'm not going to cry and tattle on you to my mom.

I know NOTHING about Welcome Home, but I know a lot about Muppets lore, so I have a theory on Poppy. Poppy was created as a male character for another show, before having eyelashes glued on for her being in Welcome Home.
The only thing I disagree with is the notion that Eddie HAS to be bisexual or otherwise m-spec just because he's dating Frank. Gay men and lesbians can and often do feel attraction towards nonbinary people, and plenty of enbies use gay/lesbian labels even though they date both binary and nonbinary folk. Besides that, this video slaps, I love these gay little puppets, and the rant on NSFW content is so real. I often feel as if younger fandom members are straight up spewing puritan garbage and it gets really tiring dealing with fanpol.

From the recent update, specifically because of the live interview, I hc wally as aro and maybe ace and I hope that comes out as true. His lack of understanding romantic love and instead clearly favoring his platonic love of his friends really comes off as aro to me (As an aro person). I got really excited when he brushed off the love life question and made it clear that his love is towards his friends!!! I hope that angle of 'you can be happy without love' gets explored more in the series and there's more explorations how wally deals with people pestering him about romance and the like. Also, I'm open to the idea of Eddie being gay as well because you can be gay/lesbian and be attracted to nonbinary people all the same.

I just hope people don’t get too crazy with headcanons because these aren’t characters owned by a huge company, they’re characters that are owned by one person working on a passion project for free. The fact that Poppy is "trans" can be explained with some real facts besides her active communication with her puppeteer. One is that they conceptualized her as a man at first and then at the last minute for some reason changed their mind. In the conscious mind of a puppet, could this count? Another small fact could be, I don't know, more of an allegory: she's designed to be a representation, so she actively has these traits. As someone else said, she has more colorful feathers when this is common in male birds, and in some drawings of the characters as children she's still in her shell. I myself have an OC who is also supposed to be trans and it's a bit of both facts: He was meant to be a girl until the last minute, sohhe keeps having a "girl" puppet model in male clothes, just so the crew wouldn't have to do it all over again hshs
I love this video so much!!!!! I’m so happy to get some more clarification on clowns feelings on NSFW art as there has been a lot of miss information and outrage about it. And as an autistic and NSFW artist all the hate around it kind of broke my heart. I’m glad that no one forced clown to change their mind, and they change their mind on their own accord. And I respect their decision, and I am very happy that they came up with a clever solution. What breaks my heart is all the outrage and infantilization around clowns decision. Insisting that it couldn’t have possibly just been them changing their mind. I hope eventually people will just stop and except that this is clowns decision to make no one else’s they get to decide what people are allowed and not allowed to do with their characters. I also hope that people stop infantilizing clown and autistic people in general. There are some of us that like horny stuff and some of us that don’t, but it has nothing to do with our autism. Fun fact: patriges are cousins of peacocks, phesants, and chickens, males of the family have bightly colored and ornate plumage, where the hens are more dull with painer plumage, so poppy having having bright plumage but also be she/her, makes sence. Also there is a small mutation where female birds will develope masculin plumage due to to much testosterone.
For fun, I'm gonna share my own personal Barnaby sexuality headcanons (and probably accidentally do a mini analysis) So, label wise, I think Barnaby would either use the label "queer" or not use labels at all because IN HIS PERSONAL CASE, he'd be too lazy to use any other labels. He's just attracted to people. That's it. Although, regarding the idea of being involved in romance, I'm not sure it'd actual be something that'd take up much space in his mind unless he gained a crush on someone. This is just based on my view of him, but he doesn't really seem like the type who'd think about romance. He's got a busy schedule of making jokes, sleeping, being a layabout, hanging out with Wally, ETC. But that's just my opinion.

for Poppy she can definitly be seen as MtF trans because her tail and comb are very long wich is usually the case with roosters but it happened (and still does) a lot that people design their animal characters just with the general idea of "this is the animal and now I decide on the gender" just like how you can make a dog character not look like any specific breed but still call them a very specific breed (see Snoopy from the Peanuts) or having a cow with udders be a male cow (Otis from Barnyard) ect ect

I love this whole thing. Its been a very big comfort project/arg for me since it has a little bit of everything in a simple multicolored box of goodies, im an indecisive person and my intrest are all over the place lol. As a kid, I used to watch alot of government aired TV since no cable, and alot of that TV was puppet shows like HR Pufnstuf, Nanaland, Sesame Street and even the religious puppet shows on that one religious kids channel. As i got older I got into horror, horror games, creepypasta stories and recently analog horror. There is something truly unnerving about dolls/puppets despite their intended use, maybe because of the uncanny human-ness of something created to look but never be truly organic/human. Its a juxtaposing use of horror that has been around for ages and thats always a treat to see in content and with some sprinkles and nods to religious horror (the non canon concept art of Wally's cross cufflinks and 'So Below'). It explores and taps into LGBTQ+ and general Queerness. As someone who has recently came out back in highschool, its been really reassuring and heartwarming to some positive representation in a fun project. Im still in somewhat questioning since for most of my life I grew up in a home that sheltered me from bringing up homosexuality and self exploration about identity. Gender and sexuality are flexible since people are constantly growing and changing, labels change and that's ok and perfectly fine, is what some close friends have told me. It's been a confusing and difficult couple of years for the longest time and this project has not only spooked me good sometimes due to the horror aspects, but at the same time it has felt like this big warm hug of reassurance for me. Also, I'm somewhat of a history and mystery enthusiast. As a current art student myself, Clown has immediately become a role model for me. Their work truly is something to be admired and enjoyed by people!

I had to find this out by commenting on someone elses' video bc i was confused on the info on the puppets themselves in genetal, bc i didnt know much at all bc im pretty new still to the fandom & was a bit confused on it. Something I instantly was reminded of when seeing her are the old "accidentally trans/drag animal characters" in old Disney content. Because with many animals being better known by their male-characteristics they often ended up being depicted with those specifically male attributes, even when ment to depict a female character. That lead to things like full-antlered deers in dresses. Or bedazzled, colorful peacock ladies.

While humanity trends to dress up femininity with colors and frill, it's usually quite the opposite in the bird kingdom. In most species of birds the males are the ones with colorful plumage. Meanwhiles the females are usually comparably bland, most commonly a mix of nothing but browns and... more browns.
Obviously for more interesting character designs (and because plenty of birds are ONLY know for their male representatives 🤦) more often than not the colorful design option is chosen. And again, because "colors=girl ooga-booga", this lead to many female presenting bird characters who display the male attributes of their species. So... Trans by design birds. 👍

Thank you for speaking about the NSFW art shaming. I think the reactions people have to queer artists expressing their sexuality in non-childfriendly ways feels like an extension of cishet people labeling us as groomers and perverts for expressing our sexuality. Im a lesbian and I’ve seen a lot of instances in online spaces of people labeling lesbians as perverts when we discuss having actual sexual feelings instead of just being family friendly, I’ve even seen this mentality from other queer people which is depressing to me. I think the idea that nsfw artists, especially queer ones are all porn addicted freaks is really misguided and a lot of people who draw NSFW just do it cause they like drawing bodies and they dont think sex is a shameful thing that needs to be hidden from society

Yes! I myself am a trans person on the gender-fluid spectrum, who loves dressing exclusively androgynous-to-feminine, typically way closer to fem than the middle, who uses he/him exclusively, and I get why characters aren’t *like* like me, I’m excessively complicated when it comes to my gender identity and expression, but seeing nonbinary characters who I can relate to more really in any way is so great and makes me feel a lot better about my identity

Yeah it's sooooo refreshing. Nonbinary characters are always represented as androgynous and using genderneutral pronouns. As an enby myself who can't pass as androgynous and doesn't want to, I got so fed up that I decided to create my own nonbinary character who looks very feminine, clearly has female anatomy but uses he/him pronouns.
Honestly, I'm thankful to creators like Clown who portray genderqueer characters in a less stereotypical manner

They’re non-binary and very very confident in that but like dressing feminine and having long hair and it makes me feel a lot more confident in myself, and I’m sure a lot of other non-binary people can relate
My understanding of Poppy is that with birds, male birds tend to sport brighter colors but culturally people tend to equivocate brighter colors to feminine, and this I feel happens in children’s entertainment leading to females characters with the showy characteristics of males of the actual species because it looks nice.

Thank you for the NSFW rant. I myself am very small Nsfw artist, and I do understand about Clown's first wishes of NSFW not drawn, and even stating maybe they will change thier mind on the future. I thought it was a really smart decision making that seperate tag so it didnt go combine with the Welcome Home tag.
The amount of harassment seen on nsfw artists on twitter is gross, amd trying to defend Clown even though never was forced in the first place 😭I didnt see much people speaking about this enough but im really glad you did.

I personally headcanon Eddie as either gay or unlabeled queer, since he always only wears the rainbow flag, even in the pride illustrations, whereas Clown's doodles of Eddie's mom and dad show them wearing ties with the pan and bi colors, respectively, so i think it's safe to assume Eddie's family wears ties corresponding to their pride flags.
Also, thank you for mentioning that stuff about NSFW art! as someone who's both autistic and asexual, i'm so tired of being infantilized or being called "pure", and even within the communities there's people with a weird sense of superiority that is really reminiscent of homophobic and purist ideas. It's fine if someone doesn't want to see that kind of stuff, or personally finds it gross, but they shouldn't invade other people's spaces designated for that stuff and tell them how to act and think. I'm also asexual with ADHD and a wife who is asexual and autistic. The number of times people have insinuated that our marriage is basically us just "playing house" is infuriating. If sexual intercourse is someone's measure of a relationship's quality then they've got a LOT of emotional maturing to do, and yet we're the ones being infantalized.
But yeah despite both being asexual, we both tend to read/view sexually explicit content if it is part of a fandom one of us is active in. Not wanting to physically do the deed does not impede my ability to engage with it as a concept. I know NOTHING about Welcome Home, but I know a lot about Muppets lore, so I have a theory on Poppy. Poppy was created as a male character for another show, before having eyelashes glued on for her being in Welcome Home.
The only thing I disagree with is the notion that Eddie HAS to be bisexual or otherwise m-spec just because he's dating Frank. Gay men and lesbians can and often do feel attraction towards nonbinary people, and plenty of enbies use gay/lesbian labels even though they date both binary and nonbinary folk.
Besides that, this video slaps, I love these gay little puppets, and the rant on NSFW content is so real. I often feel as if younger fandom members are straight up spewing puritan garbage and it gets really tiring dealing with fanpol.

On TV Tropes, Clown has revealed that Julie is Genderfluid and Bisexual, Poppy is Transgender and Lesbian, Frank is Non-binary and Gay, and Eddie Dear (my favorite character) is only gay.

From the recent update, specifically because of the live interview, I hc wally as aro and maybe ace and I hope that comes out as true. His lack of understanding romantic love and instead clearly favoring his platonic love of his friends really comes off as aro to me (As an aro person). I got really excited when he brushed off the love life question and made it clear that his love is towards his friends!!! I hope that angle of 'you can be happy without love' gets explored more in the series and there's more explorations how wally deals with people pestering him about romance and the like. Also, I'm open to the idea of Eddie being gay as well because you can be gay/lesbian and be attracted to nonbinary people all the same.

Julie is canonically genderfluid and bisexual.
The fact that Poppy is "trans" can be explained with some real facts besides her active communication with her puppeteer.
One is that they conceptualized her as a man at first and then at the last minute for some reason changed their mind. In the conscious mind of a puppet, could this count? Another small fact could be, I don't know, more of an allegory: she's designed to be a representation, so she actively has these traits. As someone else said, she has more colorful feathers when this is common in male birds, and in some drawings of the characters as children she's still in her shell.
I myself have an OC who is also supposed to be trans and it's a bit of both facts: He was meant to be a girl until the last minute, sohhe keeps having a "girl" puppet model in male clothes, just so the crew wouldn't have to do it all over again hshs

I love this video so much!!!!! I’m so happy to get some more clarification on clowns feelings on NSFW art as there has been a lot of miss information and outrage about it. And as an autistic and NSFW artist all the hate around it kind of broke my heart. I’m glad that no one forced clown to change their mind, and they change their mind on their own accord. And I respect their decision, and I am very happy that they came up with a clever solution. What breaks my heart is all the outrage and infantilization around clowns decision. Insisting that it couldn’t have possibly just been them changing their mind. I hope eventually people will just stop and except that this is clowns decision to make no one else’s they get to decide what people are allowed and not allowed to do with their characters. I also hope that people stop infantilizing clown and autistic people in general. There are some of us that like horny stuff and some of us that don’t, but it has nothing to do with our autism. It’s all up to preference and sexual orientation and that’s it.

a personal headcannon i have for your talk about the time period and how its not exactly lgbtq+ friendly, (again personal headcannon, not cannon at all) Frank and Julie were designed to be like, *together* that's what was in every episode and such, but the creators kinda pushed how far they could go with Eddie and Frank as well. like quick hand touches and such, just treading the waters ya know? :]

Fun fact: patriges are cousins of peacocks, phesants, and chickens, males of the family have bightly colored and ornate plumage, where the hens are more dull with painer plumage, so poppy having having bright plumage but also be she/her, makes sence. Also there is a small mutation where female birds will develope masculin plumage due to to much testosterone.
For fun, I'm gonna share my own personal Barnaby sexuality headcanons (and probably accidentally do a mini analysis)
So, label wise, I think Barnaby would either use the label "queer" or not use labels at all because IN HIS PERSONAL CASE, he'd be too lazy to use any other labels. He's just attracted to people. That's it. Although, regarding the idea of being involved in romance, I'm not sure it'd actual be something that'd take up much space in his mind unless he gained a crush on someone. This is just based on my view of him, but he doesn't really seem like the type who'd think about romance. He's got a busy schedule of making jokes, sleeping, being a layabout, hanging out with Wally, ETC. But that's just my opinion.
Im only saying this headcanon cause i love it so much: barnaby and wally are either in a romantic or queerplatonic relationship (i havent thought about their specific orientations, but wally being omni sounds really fitting)
for Poppy she can definitly be seen as MtF trans because her tail and comb are very long wich is usually the case with roosters
but it happened (and still does) a lot that people design their animal characters just with the general idea of "this is the animal and now I decide on the gender"
just like how you can make a dog character not look like any specific breed but still call them a very specific breed (see Snoopy from the Peanuts)
or having a cow with udders be a male cow (Otis from Barnyard) ect ect

I love this whole thing. Its been a very big comfort project/arg for me since it has a little bit of everything in a simple multicolored box of goodies, im an indecisive person and my intrest are all over the place lol. As a kid, I used to watch alot of government aired TV since no cable, and alot of that TV was puppet shows like HR Pufnstuf, Nanaland, Sesame Street and even the religious puppet shows on that one religious kids channel. As i got older I got into horror, horror games, creepypasta stories and recently analog horror. There is something truly unnerving about dolls/puppets despite their intended use, maybe because of the uncanny human-ness of something created to look but never be truly organic/human. Its a juxtaposing use of horror that has been around for ages and thats always a treat to see in content and with some sprinkles and nods to religious horror (the non canon concept art of Wally's cross cufflinks and 'So Below'). It explores and taps into LGBTQ+ and general Queerness. As someone who has recently came out back in highschool, its been really reassuring and heartwarming to some positive representation in a fun project. Im still in somewhat questioning since for most of my life I grew up in a home that sheltered me from bringing up homosexuality and self exploration about identity. Gender and sexuality are flexible since people are constantly growing and changing, labels change and that's ok and perfectly fine, is what some close friends have told me. It's been a confusing and difficult couple of years for the longest time and this project has not only spooked me good sometimes due to the horror aspects, but at the same time it has felt like this big warm hug of reassurance for me. Also, I'm somewhat of a history and mystery enthusiast. As a current art student myself, Clown has immediately become a role model for me. Their work truly is something to be admired and enjoyed by people!

I am cisgender (though I am aroace who wouldn't care of the gender of a potential partner, very likely demi), so I was having a hard time grasping the concept of what it means to be nonbinary and, more specifically, genderfluid. Your wording helped.
