What kind of peoples of the Realms would you like me to focus on in future videos. It is my hope that sharing more about groups like the Yuan-ti will help Realms fans and players of D&D to see them as something more than just "monsters" to be defeated.
Another great video. Yuan-ti are much more complex beings than just snake people. But as a famous archaeologist is known for saying, “Why did it have to be snakes?”
I played a Yaun-ti eloquence bard a little while back who was the definitive manipulator; everyone around her carefully arranged in her mind by combination of usefulness, predictability and threat. The expression on people's faces when I revealed that she was a spy acting on behalf of "the family" and what that entailed (Yaun-ti purebloods slowly cementing shadowy influence over the various mortal nations) was priceless.
I remember running campaign where the Paladin was the first to notice, then when they confirmed that they were really working for the snakes. Little to say he was not happy with the situation working for an evil result.
I ran a Dragon Heist campaign with a Yuan-Ti bard, a Lizardman warlock, a Grung Mystic (best friend to the tortle), and a Tortle ranger (unknowing slave to the grung). Since they were basically races from Chult, it was decided that they met when the Yuan-Ti was attempting to steal from a merchant prince of Port Nyanzaru, and hired the other three to help. Unbeknownst to those three, the Yuan-Ti intended for them to be the patsies. The heiet went sideways, though, and the four of them had to flee and stowed away on the first ship leaving port, which happened to take them to Waterdeep.
It's Canon in my version of the Realms that the reason the yaun ti makes secret societies is because they know that our monkey brains are incapable of ignoring a mystery. It's the organizational equivalent of a monkey trap.
I'm running a Yuan-ti campaign that are summing Dendar the Night Serpent. They have manipulated a Blue Dragon to crossbreed with a younger Red Dragon to form Purple Dragons. They used specially created magic to age the dragons. These Purple dragons are raised by the yuan-ti and cause fear and nightmares in the surrounding cities. They will use this fear to strengthen Dendar -- it is now up to the characters to stop this menace. I have used Zotha as a catalyst for Dendar in my version. Zotha's nightmare was consumed by the, then, small and unassuming Dendar. Thank you so much for the generous description of Zotha on twitter! Love the channel :) P.S: My mom is from Newfoundland :)
My players are very fond of the Northern parts of the North - Cormyr is as far South as we go. As such I decided that the Yuan-ti would be a huge threat except that they cannot survive in a winter environment. Sure there's Endure Elements: Cold but what if that fails? Dead in a few hours if that. Thus to make them a threat, at one time the party was having try-outs for a hired fighter position. It's a small number of PCs so they hire extra help which they usually end up befriending and getting attached to, and periodically I have them have to leave so the party doesn't get too big and we can do "try outs" again which they really enjoy and it lets me cut loose and whip up some unusual characters. Anyway one of these try-out characters was a female "human" fighter who was very cold and "logical" and talked like a Vulcan, and in the right light you would think there was a faint hint of green in her skin. Most people assume she's maybe 1/4 or 1/8 orc because she was build like Red Sonja. Her actual backstory is that she is part of a Yuan-Ti breeding program to create endothermic Yuan-ti - warm blooded snake people who could thrive in the cold. Long story short, she was sent up into the Silver Marches as a test and will be "recovered" in a year or two for study. She is the only one in her batch that is successful, and they want to catch her and breed her with one of the male successes and have a race of cold-hardy Yuan-ti. The catch is that despite her seemingly emotionless demeanor, she has grown fond of her human and half-elven companions and would rather 1. remain with them and 2. not be used as a tool to enslave the North of Faerun. So she is going to come clean to the party and ask for their help to not be dragged home and studied and bred out. That following summer a team of potent Yuan-ti are going to be sent to retrieve her, and the party is going to have to deal with them (I know them, they'll offer to protect her). Looking forward to springing this on them at a really bad time!!!
I am sorry to say of all the variety of monsters to use, I never had the chance to use Yuan-Ti as foes in any capacity. It certainly didn't help that I had a DM who's fear of snakes make him avoid them!
You must have been reading my 90s notes Ed! Oh.. When the Lords of Waterdeep in 1371 discover the Yaun Ti plot just under their feet! 😂 But if Halaster realizes their schemes he may eliminate them from the 3rd level before the PCs even get a chance to out them!
Ed, I love listening to you talk about the Realms. It's like back when they still published Dragon magazine and all those wonderful lore articles. Keep up the great work!
I love hearing Ed point out speaking patterns. I have family from all over the U.S., and we have speech pattern differences exactly like the one described in this video. For instance, just ask someone if they're from Missouri or "Mizzura"
I played a Yuan-Ti pureblood he wanted revenge on those that made him a monster and when the party tried to stop him from destroying the nest he pulled out a bag of holding full of alchemist fire and said then the God's shale judge us all the party ran and I blew up the temple. The only one who missed my character was the Wizard witch he gave his necklace.
I love the Yuan-ti, one of my very favourite D&D races and they were the primary antagonists of my Rise of the Snakemen campaign I ran in 3rd edition many years ago. The players began investigating a series of thefts in Baldur's Gate which led them to Waterdeep and then to Wolfhill House in the Mere of Dead Men (where I ran the Slave Vats of the Yuan-ti adventure from Dungeon magazine) and from there on to the Tashalan jungles and finally to Hlondeth. Thank you for all the lore Ed.
Back in the Old Days when I first saw Yaun-ti I associated them with the Serpent people of Lovecraft and ran them in CoC and Runequest BRP games since then Of course , went a little afield from Ed's stuff
One of my favourite D&D campaigns I ran back decades ago was heavily influenced by the movie Conan the Barbarian and featured a cult of fanatical humans being manipulated by a group of Yuan-Ti (led by a Yuan-Ti mage named Thalsa Doom... I did say "heavily influenced"). That was the first time a campaign I ran was truly loved by the playing group (without any gripes) largely because I didn't treat the Yuan-Ti like monsters but like human protagonists with real depth to their motivations. The Yuan-Ti always had a bit of a special place in my heart after that. Glad to hear more about the Yuan-Ti and how they fit into the greater Realms lore.
Yes! And the Zehiran Yuan Ti were much more frightening since they came out of the shadows to invade and stopped using slow and subtle tactics of Sseth's Yuan Ti. Aggressive and out in the open Yuan Ti is a scary thing lol
While I have not used Yuan-ti as the main antagonists in my Campaign, they have always been in the backdrop and ever alluded to, being among the Creator Races that predate the common races of the current Age. Pathfinder has an excellent Adventure Path that plunges the heroes into the ancient cities and machinations of the Serpent Folk called SERPENT’S SKULL. Six adventures in total.
I am constantly impressed at how much knowledge you have about Forgotten Realms. How easily you recall information about the geography, species, and monsters in the game. I have checked and you are always spot on!
Mr Greenwood all this information is going to give very very welcoming and interesting twists on my campaign since Inha both a Drow and a Yuan-ti in the party.
Any updated information on Hengeyokai race in the realms? I would not be Suprised if tebaxi, kenkus and aarakocra are Hengeyokai race... Much like eladrin, moon elf, dark elf and the rest are under elves race with it's different division of subraces of elfs
Hello Mr. Greenwood. I am planning on using Yuan-Ti in a campaign I am starting soon. They will be preparing an ancient temple in the mountains along the jungle of Chult. This was great information. Thank you for doing what you do.
Mr. Greenwood, an honor. I had no idea you had a youtube channel. Cannot tell you how many of your books that I stare at regularly... Thank you for all that you do. I've subscribed, liked, and commented. I look forward to rifling through the video library you've made!! Keep up the amazing work!!

Ellistrae especially. 😉 I remember some artwork of the old mage, sitting near a nude-bathing young drow woman. Yrs ago. 😅 There's been debate on whether drow babies are inherently evil or just taught that way. I say no but it would be interesting to hear you talk about it.
@@edgreenwoodofficial Ha! Yes, I posted that comment days before the video came out. It's extremely weird! I think Mystra's "working" us Ed! And I don't mind at all.
Hello Ed. I have been playing Dungeons and Dragons since I was nine years old, am now 52. The Netherese Empire has always been one one my favorite pieces of Realm history, alongside the Nether Scrolls. I am currently running a game where the players have a component to a mythallar, I plan to have them repair the mythallar and cause the flying city to rise into the skies once more. The players are new to the Realms and their only knowledge of the Netherese come from in game. So I am enjoying watching them. The flying city has its own history and areas of interest along with a certain npc who still resides there. I am anxious to see how the players will react to this. Then there is my list of power groups who will want that city into their own hands, so fun times for the group. All of this is to say just one thing. Thankyou, Thank you for a game I have enjoyed for decades. Mark
I think I have finally have something to bedevil my players for a few years. Thank you so much for your time and efforts Mr. Greenwood. It is very much appreciated.
Thank you Ed for all that you've done and all that you are. Say hello to The Old Sage of Shadowdale for me the next time he stops by that lonely cabin in the wilds of Canada.
Ohh, I've had SUCH fun as the DM, running a wisecracking Oceans "hit team" of liches ("Well, I shook Sinatra's hand, too...and it fell off!"/"Vecna called, and he wants his rotting shroud back!") in my high-PC-character-level Realms jaunts. Haven't done a love scene with Volo and his snakey lady yet, though. (Likely a good thing.)
Love these in-depth breakdowns and ideas for campaigns! Have you thought about writing your own campaign modules for the Realms and selling them in your Patreon!?!? I’d throw money at that!!!!!
Another fantastic video about the Realms. I wanted to know about some of famous rangers of the realm that not including the most famous drow of the Realms
I like Yuan-Ti. I forget they were half human and half snake towards full snake. I only seen their pureblood look which is more human-like. I made a homebrew race that are like a cousin to Yuan-Ti but do different things and have different traits
Mr Greenwood, this video topic is near and dear to me as I am running a campaign with I1 Dwellers of the Forbidden City as the center piece, and thus the Yuan Ti are a primary antagonist. They have setup cells in bordering kingdoms and Sultanates so as to kidnap victims for dark rituals to their alien gods and sow dissent among the humans / demihumans of the region. I have altered their core spell casting to give them more of an Illusion and Charm bend to be far better spies, assassins, and infiltrators.
This was the best of these, that I’ve seen so far. Ed easily demonstrates, why no meaningful additions to the forgotten realms can be expected from „Hasbro‘s D&D“. Unlike Ed, they lack the courage, the incentive and apparently the acumen to portrait the existing factions of the realms in a nuanced and believable way, let alone create new ones. “Look, an owlbear!” Is as good as it gets. Complex motivations and philosophical gray areas aren’t for the mass market. It’s this lack of dedication to the narrative that probably makes me a grognard only two years after having entered the fray.
Thank you! Me, I remember how it was back before the throat surgery and my diaphragm being cut during my heart surgery, and I got old and lost my deep bass register. I could sing, once.
O wow I really didn’t expect you to reply. Thank you for all you have given the RPG community with the deep and immersive world you created. If there exists a video or audio recording of you singing the wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald I would love to hear it. Take care Sage of Shadowdale.
It seems like the Githyanki/Githzerai might easily ally with Yuan-ti as a way to handle illithids... I've considered a lot with Yuan-ti, never really gotten to use them in the Realms, but I did use them a lot with some early Freeport stuff when they included some lore for them and set up a LOT of interesting hooks with a severe emnity between them and the Serpentmen there (which are more of the mythos and/or Conan style ones, but end up more of a neutral group of survivors...and easily party allies). Though the campaign ended up collapsed before they really popped up visibly, I'd also planned on using them in the Ghostwalk campaign I was running as they were interesting, especially with the Coil there.
Hey ed big fan. I want to start a campaign off with yuanti infitarting the waterdeep government. My problem is that the waterdeep leaders are very powerful, and im not sure how that would interact. How would you wirte the yuanti to be able to do it? My plan is to have yuanti send the party on a mission to clear out a local kobald cave that has been stealing from the local farms. The party will "just happen to stubble apon" a group of drow (working with mindflayers) with a captured silver dragon. The yuanti obviously wanting to disrupt what the mindflayers are doing. (Turning metallicdragons into servants). Sorry maybe too much detail, but is essence, how how would the yuanti be able to infiltrate a government that powerful with Laeral Silverhand around?
Easily, if they're careful and patient: use doppelgangers or other shapeshifters as go-betweens, and work on influencing increasing numbers of Masked Lords.
Heh. Future vid coming on that very topic. Short answer: Tiamat isn't exactly subtle, but the other two are, so a lot of the yuan-ti haven't even realized how their attitudes are being manipulated. All three deities are playing a "long game" for control of "their" race.
Sure. Game/story first, make sure the setting supports it. Setting is characters first, geography second, and history a distant third (don't get bogged down detailing every detail of the past).
Thanks! I'm having a blast doing them, and Ivan is making me look good. I created the Realms before D&D existed, and still create the Realms every day, so who better to talk about it?

I've considered a lot with Yuan-ti, never really gotten to use them in the Realms, but I did use them a lot with some early Freeport stuff when they included some lore for them and set up a LOT of interesting hooks with a severe emnity between them and the Serpentmen there (which are more of the mythos and/or Conan style ones, but end up more of a neutral group of survivors...and easily party allies). Though the campaign ended up collapsed before they really popped up visibly, I'd also planned on using them in the Ghostwalk campaign I was running as they were interesting, especially with the Coil there.

Yuan-ti are social media brand managers.
The Way of Sseth is the best way 😉
The Yuan-ti are my favorite race to play as.
I didn't know Ed had a channel or that he made a video of one of my favorite races. Looking forward to more content!
I think i may need to run a Yuan-ti as my next PC. . . May be years though.
It is always so interesting to the tales and descriptions.
Ed has the best DnD content on youtube, lets all SUBSCRIBE
Thank you so much for mentioning me in one of your videos!
My pleasure!
Thanks for doing this Ed! Love the channel
@@edgreenwoodofficial hired doppelgangers of course! Thank you so much. 😊
Using this for my PC on a campaign.
Thank you very much for this video!
Excellent video.
How is the Sset Set Tiamat triangle competition for the Yuan’ti from the 3rd edition serpent kingdom book going on in the current meta
Heh. Future vid coming on that very topic. Short answer: Tiamat isn't exactly subtle, but the other two are, so a lot of the yuan-ti haven't even realized how their attitudes are being manipulated. All three deities are playing a "long game" for control of "their" race.
Thank you for sharing this lore, you have my Sub!
So glad I found this video
Well done 👍 the snake people are very interesting thank you for the video😊😊😊😊😊😊.
thank you!
I have been working on my own game system. I was wondering if you had any advice for world building.
Sure. Game/story first, make sure the setting supports it. Setting is characters first, geography second, and history a distant third (don't get bogged down detailing every detail of the past).
@@edgreenwoodofficial thank you this helps so much.
Love your videos!
Thanks! I'm having a blast doing them, and Ivan is making me look good. I created the Realms before D&D existed, and still create the Realms every day, so who better to talk about it?
nice
Oh no yuan-ti are behind global warming! 7:04
Nice video
