      That would explain why you have that quest from her in the under mountain book. Although if they are immortal, why do they age? Why doesn't Laeral create potions of youth if she's concerned about it instead of weakening her own powers to cover for it?

    • @edgreenwoodofficial
      @edgreenwoodofficial  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@theprofessorkeen1911 Laeral and the other Seven follow Mystra's orders. We may min-max to try to increase character powers and longevity, but characters in the Realms don't know about our game rules. The Seven aren't immortal; their bodies age and wear out. They just have stretched lifespans because they can heal with the Weave (but it very slowly burns and hollows them out in the process).

      Important lore to know, yes! I'll cover that in later videos. In this one, I had to keep her long, long history brief to keep the vid from being hours long. In this one, I was trying to focus on what she's like "right now" if you're running Waterdeep: Dragon Heist in the 1490s DR.

  • @vadermardark

    @Ed Greenwood these videos is what is needed for the Realms....There is soooo much information on the Where's but never the Who's and Why's.....In my opinion this is the most important part of world building. The more interesting characters there is the more motivated I feel to learn about the world and history. I've always wanted to know about Artimus younger years.. Or what motivated Mirt before money that type of things....One question I have is Who are those that have all the power pulling strings behind the scenes in Sembia?

    • @edgreenwoodofficial
      @edgreenwoodofficial  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In Sembia, it's the "merchant princes" (not real nobility, but the really, really rich and successful merchants who've ended up owning key warehouses, docks, and city real estate that so much flows through, daily. So they have power and influence without any big public profile. As for Mirt, he began as Mirt the Merciless, a mercenary who rose to be captain of his own merc company (he wasn't fat, then), and found a fast friend in Durnan after he lost several loves in succession. As for Artemis, that's for Bob to tell (R.A. Salvatore).

    Wait, Khelben faked his own death so he could leave Laeral’s court? He couldn’t have simply revealed who he was to her in private and explained everything? Seems a bit extreme.
    And Laeral was so upset about his death that she just up and quit the city and government that she founded - abandoned them - so she could wander in the wild for twenty-five years?

    We started our story back in 1472 DR, so we have seen Lord Neverember and for a time Forge Fritzwilliam before Neverember again.

    I am so happy to hear Ed Greenwood at last!
    But I am sad to say this. I do not like the Wizard of the Coast feel the game has now.
    I remember the old days almost thirty years ago when AD&D was more european fantasy like and the art was that of the 80's. Now with the new artistic direction it does not feel like the game world I used to know. It is modern america like. And that means woke.

    Maybe someone knows, I am new to D&D but what relationship does Mystra have with sorcerers? As far as I understand it the mother of all magic probably includes sorcerers "innate" magic as well as the way wizards draw upon magic.

    • @edgreenwoodofficial
      @edgreenwoodofficial  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. Sorcerers instinctively draw on the Weave rather than needing a "recipe" (a spell)...and Mystra IS the Weave. So Mystra is the goddess of sorcerers, and an inspiration to many of them (whereas Azuth, god of spellcasters, does not).

  • @Skrighk
    @Skrighk 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm amazed how much this lined up with how I improvised her in my Tyranny of Dragons campaign. My character, Martin Trask, two time doubly expelled Wizard (Hostower and Blackstaff), head of the noble Trask line within Waterdeep, and self declared Oracle of Waterdeep, was always on her nerves when the two interacted. Never hostile, as Martin is of service to the Sword Coast, but his duplicitous nature made her unable to like the conniving mage. Martin always spoke to her with respect, but would attempt to insist he be involved in meeting involving the security of the city. Laeral treated him as a mild annoyance, like an underling who hasn't quite done enough to demand a full firing. Meanwhile, to the party of Adventurers she was guiding in facing the cult of the dragon, she was kind, affable, and on one occasion even accepted an invitation to a tavern, shared a few drinks, and had a good time. She became the beloved "Aunt" of the party, never quite involved enough to take away player agency, but enough that she wasn't written off as "useless" unlike the rest of the council that assembled. She even got a few hits against Tiamat, and threw an enlarge spell on the party fighter, who was already boosted via multiple other magical means, allowing the fighter to actually grapple the gargantuan Queen of Dragons. A year after the event, Blackstaff Tower used arcane fireworks to display an exaggerating telling of the events, with an animated firework of the Black Dragonborn Fighter chasing and then hog tying Tiamat with her own 5 necks.
    It was my first time DMing, we made it from level 1 to 20, and finished both books, with some added chapters. Many old characters, like my Martin, my friend's Turok, and others had an appearance within the story, but Laeral was the NPC with the most staying power for many reasons.

    • @edgreenwoodofficial
      @edgreenwoodofficial  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on which court. The title means a wizard who's on staff in a ruling court. Vangey was both Court Wizard and Royal Magician, and in Cormyr the first meant administering mages and arcane magic use in the kingdom for good order and security in the realm,, and the second meant using magic to protect the royal family and on behalf of the royal family. Vangerdahast saw building a spy network (and, yes, magically reading minds) as necessary to do a good job for both roles. In some city-states in the Realms, a "court mage" is a much smaller role: a wizard who casts spells when the ruler directs them to, as if they were a military unit in the ruler's army.

      When WDH was about to be published, I was too busy nursing my dying wife to write new Volo's Waterdeep Guides and compile and release all the Waterdeep lore I wanted to. I'm only now getting around to providing gamers with Realmslore to help make the city a longterm home for anyone's Realms D&D campaign.

      @@edgreenwoodofficial I'm sorry about that sir, i meant no offence. I'm more frustrated with WotC not providing such information and not publishing lore books.

      @@VeRG1L_47 Oh, I'm not offended! Death is coming for us all. I just wanted you to know why I wasn't doing these vids and the Patreon and the Greenwood's Grotto when WDH was released. I'm frustrated about the lack of deep, extensive lore, too!

    My question is:Do you actually play the D & D game?

      Of course. I played it today, most recently, and yesterday. I've been playing it frequently since 1978. DM more than play, though.
