    I love what you said about getting "that same feel"--that's the emotion and that's what I think is lacking and what I hope to bring in to my work.

    Both paintings are excellent but I like your watercolor the best.

    I really appreciated this example of using a plein air painting to guide your final painting. Really helpful information.

    Thanks so much Brienne! This is great to learn how to use plein air. I have been at it for about 5 years now and always think of it as finishing and I have never used my paintings to work from in the studio, just get em done. But after all this time I finally notice how much better things look in live time and the photo helps for placement but not for color, this reminds me that I am taking this information back home can make a finished painting from it so much better. 🙏

      You are welcome. It is good to read your thoughts and comments.
      I have loved plein air painting since I started in 2009. When I started treating my plein air work as gathering information and bringing back my work and knowledge to help my work in the studio, it was so helpful. There is so much to learn on site!!! But it is bringing those lessons back to the studio that brings our work to another level.
      Thank you for watching... BB

    It looks challenging to paint in the rain but why not! Between the oils and w/c, the w/c seems to lend itself to stormy conditions - atmosphere. I like the interest in the foreground: fence line and the creek. The viewer feels a sense of place.

      Thank you Lorraine... Painting in the rain is challenging, but fun as well. The light doesn't change and that is nice. But, it can definitely get too wet!!!

    You kind of turned the table on all the oil painters who do their plein air sketches in watercolour, then head back to their studios to create a finished oil painting. I love it! It's helpful to hear you talk about focusing on the process. That's something I'm struggling with.
    Glad you were able to share this with us.

      Thank you... I do like turning the tables. ;)
      I am glad it was useful hearing about focusing on the process...that helps to take the pressure off and keep things enjoyable. Also, you can be successful more often.
      You are so welcome...Happy Painting!

    i'm just getting started with Plein Air painting and I absolutely love it as well. Not sure I would go out in the rain though. Great Job!

      Hahaha.... no need to go out in the rain Pam. It is so fun to paint on site and learn from life. :) Go out on a beautiful day.

    I love that you combined oil painting and watercolor in a video using plein air. I am curious about which watercolor pigments did you use. I really like the color harmony. Thank you. both paintings are beautiful

      Thank you so much Pamela...I am glad you enjoyed the video. It was fun to make. The watercolor pigments I used for this painting were: Cobalt Blue (DS), Cobalt Turquoise (DS), Trans Yellow Oxide (DS), Quinacridone Rose (DS), Lavender (HOL), Horizon Blue (HOL), Trans Red Oxide (DS), Sap Green (DS), and Carbazole Violet (DS).
      DS = Daniel Smith
      HOL = Holbein
      I hope that helps.... Happy PAinting!
      Best,

    Hi Brienne,
    I like your detailed painting process like value sketches, reference studies and end results. Can you put a video explaining first value sketch and composition when you visited outdoor to paint?

    • @briennembrown5938
      @briennembrown5938  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much Yogesh. I love doing value sketches...I do them for every painting! That is a great idea for a video... I will keep that in mind. Thank you for the suggestion.
      Happy Painting!

    Its a sin for a watercolorist to touch an oil set.

      Not at all.... there is so much to learn from both mediums! They each have strengths and weaknesses.
