Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

As you say 50% of oilpainting is to know how to draw,in the last couple of years i really mastered drawing and since i getting to oil painting is very easy for me to make the sketch,buth now my focus is color mixing , your videos and Mix draw paint videos are helping me a lot specially with color mixing, value and color keep going you are the GOAT 💪👌

Yes,going about your daily life and thinking about how you'd paint things you see - I can relate to that.
Me too, I have had to change my set up so many times, as a working mom of 2 rascalls, is is crutial to make things as easy as can be.
The idea of waiting for inspiration works as long as you arrange your life in the direction of a painter and are prepared for when it comes, but like Andy Warhol used to say - the worst thing that can happen is getting what you want. I’ve come to respect those who play it safe with the subject matter. Life’s difficult, you can’t blame them for it.
I'm drawing everyday currently 30minutes after dinner while talking to family after dinner as painting takes time
I follow Carder also and have started oil painting using a limited palette and the great brush dip as well. I like your pov and instruction vids also since I don't get much time to paint (married😉👈). You address a lot of the same issues I have come across and I enjoy watching the resolutions while I ponder getting my time at the easel. Thanks for the great vids. A lot of people need to see these bc they are a wealth of information for newbies and wannabes. Keep up the great work.

For those who cannot buy Brush Dip, here is the recipe: 98ml safflower oil + 2ml clove oil. You can get clove oil from any medical shop. I have been using this Brush Dip for some time, it's life saver.
Thanks for the tip. Does the brush get clogged up next morning because that's what happened to mine when I was using refined vegetable cooking oil.
Thanks for that, what a lifesaver! If you have a palette with an airtight lid, a few drops of clove oil on a small piece of paper will keep your oil paint wet indefinitely as well.

I have just watched one of your videos on how you dont think water mixable oils are a good idea. I have to say, I am glad you changed your mind because (despite my tragic lack of experience) I do think they are amazing and a great tool to maybe transition into regular oils later. I love acrylics and they are the love of my life but water michable oils help me expand my skills and I absolutely adore them. That being said, I enjoy your videos so much. Keep them comig, mate 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I formed a whatsapp groupchat with some friends that started out as us doing "inktober" and really helped us all to keep motivated and do ~something~ every day. We finished october and made up our own prompts for november and now december. It is so motivating to just have a prompt to do every day and to have someone to show the results to and see how much you can improve just by doing it consistently and not necessarily having to think about what to paint.
Because I found it hard to get into the right headspace when you don't feel especially creative or inspired by anything. Looking up the word of the day gave me a starting point to develop an idea quickly. And without the tiny bit of pressure to "have to" do something it's also easy to say - i can just do it tomorrow...
So yeah I think that's a good idea for people who struggle to just sit down and paint a little something at least - make a list of words (some more abstract like 'helpful' or 'mischievous' for example and then maybe some more precise ones like 'tea' or 'glove' or whatever really helps me to mix things up and gives me enough creative freedom to make it fun but also provides a framework that helps me to sit down quicker and just do it.
It doesn't have to be a masterpiece every time but really made me experiment more with different techniques and styles and mediums as well. Haven't been this creative and active since I left school 10 years ago probably - now I've been doing all kinds of things again from pencil drawing, ink, markers to aquarelle and oil and even tried digital painting finally.
And it takes me anywhere from 10 minutes to a few hours every day - depends on how much time I have and how motivated I am and all these other factors... but doing it every day really helps to pick up a pencil again the next days. You just have to start!

Yep.. watch painting videos incessantly in my spare time. It helps in surprising ways. Like you said, so does drawing. My progression was the opposite. I went drawing to oils then to pastels and then watercolors. Love them all but oil is my favorite at this time :). Great short video.

I LOVED this episode, so many helpful tips! For me I have to push off the 'not feeling like' it or 'I don't feel ready...' But, once I have a wet canvas I can't stay away from it. Now I have 2 going and a that's great to because if I get stuck on one I can switch to the other .
Thanks for the advice, it really boosts my confidence! I used to be fairly good at painting before I had my children and have just started getting back into oil painting now that they have started school. But I put too much pressure on myself and started a big painting in my usual realistic style that hasn't been going well. Needless to say it knocked my confidence. So I took your advice and have started a small study this week, with thick paint and just gone for it! I feel better already. I'm gonna try keep up the momentum by keeping small, as time is also an issue and completing work is satisfying. I need to practise, practise, practise! X

Anyone in uk who cant get the brush dip can just use the stuff painters and decorators use to keep their brushes soft, an impregnated pad or liquid. The only thing to be aware of is that it can affect the brush handle paint on some brushes.
I spend more time watching your videos than I do painting.
I’m a new oil painter! Nice points about setting up in advance, using portable + disposable materials, working smaller, observing colors/shapes around you.
Some things I wanna add to “not knowing what to paint”.
When I’m busy at work, I will use a printer and actually just print out reference photos to paint for later.
I like making a cache of ideas to later paint or do in realism sketching. I find great inspiration from printing my own iPhone photos, pinterest, Japanese stock photo sites such as PIXTA (their stock feels better quality and less “corporate”), deviantart (lots of free stock), and pose books I got from Kinokuniya book store. Lots of resource.
For painting in B/W, I choose objects like marble statues, metal armor/helmets, simple geometric shapes, my pets.... anything I look would look good in monochrome or B/W.
For painting in color.... well, quick story. A few months ago I went to Home Depot and saw HUGE pamphlets of free color palette samples they have in their Paint aisle (they have a bunch of color palettes for wall designers), these pamphlets came in cools/neutrals/warms and they have a ton of red/oranges/yellows/greens/blues/purples samples also. I could not resist taking a bunch of home and pretty much obsessively matched tons of colors. Landing a color accurately just motivated me more and more.
Another thing I do is is think about the logical progression of learning. Take any art book and break down their table of contents. It usually starts like material -> proportion -> perspective -> simple forms -> light/shadow -> colors/color theory/color matching/color harmony -> brushstroke, etc.... these concepts build on each other. As a beginner I try to capture this flow in my learning process but also accept that learning IS NOT LINEAR and you will always take steps back to take another forward.
But at every point you’re still in control of your own progression..... I see myself in that “critical period” of information growth (which babies go through when acquiring language skills). There is always new connections to be made.
BTW, while doing art, I will also listen to either non-art podcasts. I found out light distraction like a “cafe ambience” background noise can make you more focused and productive, since you’re not just “isolated” doing just art, but have an open listening ear to conversations on the side.

This might be a crazy question. Why can’t you use home oils instead of the brush dip such as olive oil? Would that be the same thing? I can just wipe the olive oil off the brush before I paint.

Thank you, I like these tips. I have a full time job and only paint on weekends, however I will draw one or two nights during the week also. I have a question for you. There is a painting course on Udemy where the guy shows a technique of basically laying down every oil painting in black and white (greyscale) before then using colour over the top. This is so you have control over values both on your pallet and canvas, however it's a very measured process which almost takes some of the fun out of painting, however there is no doubt as a beginner I got good results from it. What's your thoughts on this method? I am also learning to mix values using complementary colours, which I feel is much harder but if mastered would be a better way?
the closest thing I have done to a greyscale underpainting is an underpainting using a wash of burnt umber. It is helpful dialing in the values

What do you do with the paint still on the pallet paper when you are done? If there is extra do you store it somehow?
Press/wrap some foil over it and put it in the fridge or freezer. Or throw it away 🤷🏻♀️

Thanks.... really important for me.. I'm a frickin' newbee and I thought I could start by painting my face... lol... demoralizing. They all look like monkeys (which I hope is not a slight on monkeys- and at least I was consistent- over and over again... big flat faces...no understanding of form and light or anatomy for that matter)- so building on form and light on seemingly simple ass things (apples/ balls/ etc)- will hopefully build my momentum and keep me "right sized"... it is the process that I enjoy... and keeping it real short... real easy so I don't get overwhelmed with cleaning brushes (like 8 of them) and cleaning off palates of 14 different swatches of beautiful shades of various expensive paints... Thanks for keeping it real and igniting my hope...

I’m here again.. a bit late though.
Currently I'm experimenting with water mixable oils....in stay wet palette to keep them wet till atleast one week. How? First well of the palette I kept viridian green(which I rarely use) water mixable oil plus few drops of Clove oil, second well, same colour and few drops of water, third, same colour and walnut oil...keeping the lid open for 30minutes everyday...now it's day 4 still they are wet...but I'm respraying everyday in the water well...let me see what happens...I'll report the result here. I'm getting poppy oil and stand linseed oil again to do the same experiment. Why am I doing this? So that if my palette doesn't dry days or a week...this way you don't waste paint also......I could just paint everyday 30minutes water mixable oil same Like watercolour palette...OPEN... paint...close...Brush in brush dip.I hope it works. Any comments or suggestions please

Wow, you sit to paint?
That is a complete novelty to me, yet if I think of it, there are paintings by the masters of other masters, sitting painting, aren't there?
I have always drawn in a sitting position, however, to be able to step back to view the work constantly, I stand to paint. Perhaps that is my problem....?
I stand most of the time because it allows me to step back a lot. For small studies like these I grant myself the privilege of a seat but I highly suggest everyone stand if they can.
