Yeah recently I haven’t been drinking very much yet this is favorite channel on youtube. Always puts me in a great mood and the visuals are amazing. Definitely will be finally attempting some of these cocktails this summer. Thanks Anders!
I have been binge watching this channel for the past 2 weeks. Every video is amazing and you have such a genuine excitement for making cocktails! I would love an episode on the cocktail books you have read or would recommend!
The Prescription Julep sounds super delicious! I love classic Julep but the Prescripted one would go right down my alley! I have to try it out! Thank you Anders for this amazing recipe and yet another stunning episode. To The Bar!
I love her reaction to the juleps... reminds me of the Minnesota "Oooh!" Which is appropriate, because a minnesotan who has a mint julep for the first time says that exact thing!
I recently made a Mint Julep with homemade Orgeat (your recipe-ish) instead of the simple syrup that Diffords called for. Also, their recipe has 1 dash of bitters. The combo was absolutely delightful: the subtle hints of almond and orange married so well with the bourbon and the addition of bitters added depth. Orgeat rocks!
I absolutely agree, I made orgeat with freshly made almond milk, and using it in stead of simple syrup in a lot of different cocktails. And it is delicious!
My mint in the garden is growing fast. Soon I can have Mint Julep every day with a garden mint. If I could only distil some bourbon, I am set for life 😂 will be trying the prescription for sure.
Made the mint julep as prescribed (made rich demarara for the 4th and still had some left over.) Gave my wife a taste and she immediately made me make another one. Hands down the best cocktail channel on TH-cam. Side note, I'd love to see your take on a Sazerac. It's currently my favorite whiskey cocktail.
Anders, I made Prescription Juleps tonight, for myself and a friend, and it's honestly one of the best cocktails that I have ever had. I had never heard of this cocktail before. The blending of this drink, with the Rittenhouse and Cognac, is spectacular. Talk about delicious and refreshing!! My friend agreed. What a lovely treat!! Right now? I think I prefer the Cognac and Rye Julep, at least for now! And Rittenhouse is a must! I used Remy Martin VSOP Cognac. Terrific video! Have a wonderful weekend!!
Cheers, Christine! Thank you for making the prescription julep - I'm so happy you loved it! I agree, the cognac and rye play off each other so well (and I love the Rittenhouse). I hope it led to a memorable time with your friend 😊 Thanks again, Christine - happy weekend!
@@AndersErickson Very memorable. So nice to have in this time of Covid, where get togethers have been much more difficult to do. Having both had the Covid vaccine, recently, as frontline healthcare staff, it felt much safer to connect! The cognac and rye do play off of each other so well! My partner loves this spirit combo, a lot, so he is going to try the prescription julep tonight!! He has never had one! Just the bourbon julep. Have an awesome week-end!!
We made the non-prescription for yesterday's race. I went 50-50 with 1:1 simple syrup (white & demerara). Just a great cocktail and horse race! Thanks for helping us drink better!!
“That‘s not science, that‘s just air!“ made me laugh! Great quality on the videography and audio (the moment with the bubbling was just great! Really showed off how great your set up is without at all signaling that you were TRYING to show off Hahah), with an infectiously fun presence! Cheers!
I love when you shake two shakers at the same time. It reminds me of a bartender I used to date that would shake two shakers while making eye contact with the customer she thought would tip her fattest lol.
Soooo. A few years ago the Mint Julep became my drink of choice, simply because it was my favorite Ray Charles song in my early 20's and I just had to know what one was. I found a recipe online, made it, and loved it. It is sweet, but then again, I always enjoyed drizzling whisky on ice cream.. so no shocker there that I like a sweet concoction. I used silver plated julep cups which always rusted and weren't worth the $ I spend on them. So I eventually got the real deal: Sterling silver cups. Boy what a difference, even in taste. You gotta use Sterling silver to bring out the best in this drink- lol I guess u could say, THERE'S your Bitters! And u can't drink anything else out of these cups...too metallic tasting. But yeah Sterling silver is the key. I also make my own mint syrup. The recipe I use calls for rubbing the inside of the cup with a mint leaf, then filling it with crushed ice, then drizzle 2 tbsp mint syrup and 2 oz bourbon...though I've used crown royal in a pinch and liked it just as well...though it is a different drink with Canadian whisky... and cut the straw to just an inch above the cup rim to bring your nose close to it. And of course stick a few mint leaves in for garnish. That seemed like a lot of words...
I just returned from Louisville, where my wife and I visited the Kentucky Derby Museum. We were excited to order mint juleps from the actual Derby Café, and received two ounces of Old Forester Mint Julep flavored bourbon on ice with a few mint leaves in commemorative glasses. Super disappointing. Luckily, I convinced her to try again at the Brown Hotel - they did it right. Delicious drink. Great video!
I did it with the Cognac and used brown sugar because it is what I had close to the demerara. I liked it, and when I get the demerara syrup I will see if it changes the taste drastically.
The mint julep is one of my favorite cocktails. However, I always struggle with the method. Typically, I muddle. But then I end up with bits of mint floating in the drink and getting in my teeth. I’m going to have to try this method with shaking and straining.
Thanks, Pete! Love that you're growing your own mint. I really need to do the same - I go through so much when I use it. Hope you like the prescription julep - Cheers!
I'm really digging your content, thank you so much for all the hard work, it really shows in the quality of your videos. I do want to comment that you didn't mention the tradition of holding the julep cup just by the bottom to allow for the maximum amount of frost to form on the rest of the cup. It certainly doesn't change the flavor of the drink, it just adds to the cultural background of it and I do think that makes things tastier. I can't wait to chainsaw through the rest of your content! Cheers!
Did you start doing this because covid hit? So many bartenders lost their job last year so its cool you found something that could possibly replace working at the bar. So close to 100k subscribers. I was a cafe manager but also a bar trainer and have a home bar as well. It is a lot of fun watching these videos. Keep it up.
This is unrelated to the video (I love me a good mint julep, btw), but I got a full-song ad for Smokin' Out The Window by Silk Sonic, and wound up watching the whole thing. By the end, I forgot which video I came here to watch, and got a pleasant little surprise after. Damn, that's a good tune.
Huge Julep fan here. I do 3oz Bourbon, .5oz 1:1 simple syrup in mine. I'll have to try the shake method and up the sugar to see how I like it. Great video!
You content is just perfect. Though I like drinks and making them and exploring new ones, I think I would watch you if you were showing something I did not care about. The intro, the bit of history, the rationale for the mix, the mix and the tasting = perfect format. Both of you are perfect in front of the camera. Just do a new cocktail a week until the end of time. I will be watching and building with you. Now off the the liquor store so a can build a Vieux Carre. Cheers!
That's a great idea - they change from time to time as I make my way through them, but there are definitely some bottles I like to always have up there. Thanks for the suggestion!
Just made one with half ounce simple syrup, half Wild Turkey and half Starward Twofold and fresh mint from my own garden. I regret nothing except for using a highball instead of a lowball glass and honestly I probably got the same amount of mint up my nose.
Brandy juleps predate bourbon juleps. Peach brandy was also added to the brandy julep. It makes one wonder if if the peach brandy they were referring to was brandy made from peaches, or a peach cordial, or liqueur. The Savoy cocktail book (1930) goes into great detail about what it calls the real mint julep. It is said to be equal parts of peach and common brandy poured over the mint, and sugar all ready in the tumbler. It also mentions the possibility of rubbing pineapple across the rim of the tumbler. Curiously, this recipe was said to be the true mint julep, yet they had another recipe called the Southern mint julep. This recipe uses bourbon, rye, or Canadian whiskey (what have you), the only real difference between your recipe and that one is that, it uses plain white sugar rather than a syrup. Theoretically the sugar being granulated would help with the muddling of the mint. A champagne julep was also present in the book as well as a few other variants. If I remember right there is other cocktail books from the 1920s, and 1930s that ask for the brandy but also ask for a dash of Jamaican rum...?... I suppose the most accurate account of the how the original julep was made would have came from a bar manual, or cocktail guide from the 1800's, rather than the early to mid 20th century. I do know that it was made with brandy though and not with bourbon.
Curiously the book, "Burke's Complete Cocktail and Tastybite Recipes" (1936) has a recipe titled Southern Mint Julep. This recipe is made from brandy, and does ask for a dash of rum as well. It also mentions putting a little sugar on top after adding the ice, in addition to the sugar all ready used in the muddling of the mint, and suggests adding the fruit that is in season as well. The recipe in the same book listed as Whiskey Mint Julep asks for Irish whiskey, or rye whiskey. No mention of bourbon. This could perhaps be because prohibition had just ended 2 years prior, however. The book does ask for bourbon in other recipes, though. So this is unlikely the reason why.
I have to try one of these. When I lived in an apartment 7 years ago, I had bar stools at the counter that bordered the kitchen. My female cat would always jump up on the end bar stool 2 hours before dinner and stare me down. I used to joke "One Mint Julep coming up Ma'am" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I still ask her that as I get dinner ready now. Only fair I try one since I joked about it for so long. Never had one before.
I'm an animal when it comes to making my juleps as I use 4oz of Bourbon (Basil Hayden is my go-to) and I always muddle my mint leaves and pour the bourbon over and let seep for about 5 minutes before adding the Demura and shaking. Then again I do like to sip my juleps over a couple of hours :-)
My dad and I experimented with a super concentrated mint syrup due to my dislike of mint pieces in my mouth. My go to is Evan Williams Bonded because that peanut note oddly makes me want a mint julep every time.
Thanks for wanting to support the channel! Seems like these cups are sold out everywhere. Too bad, because I really like them. I can't vouch for the alternatives on Amazon - I'll have to do some research. Thanks again!
Thank you for your videos! Really like how easy they are to follow and the production quality. How do you make your ice cubes? Are they from your fridge's ice maker or are you constantly manually making ice from a tray?
The only bourbon I had at home was Jim Beam apple. It’s a pretty nice drink, but the apple is very overpowering. I’ll have to try it with regular bourbon again!
My fast cocktail that i have made was Mint Julep and the test was awful its test so bitter 😛and the worst thing about that was i muddle it with force 😬
I am pacing the herb garden this time of year waiting for the mint to get big enough to harvest for these! Drink them slowly? I must be doing it wrong :D I drink the first one too quick and make a second on the leftover crushed iced. You know don't want to waste any...
I think as long as you’re not letting that crushed ice go to waste, you’re doing it right. I’d drink two in succession too if I had my own supply of fresh mint! Hope it grows big enough for you to harvest soon - cheers, Stephane!
Where do you buy your mint? I find it difficult to find good mint sprigs at grocery stores. The best I’ve found around my area was at a Japanese grocery called Uwajimaya which is an excellent spot.
Where do you get so much fresh mint? None of the grocery stores around me seem to have more than tiny plastic packs of mint. Do you just have to grow it?
Anders, how was your week bro? Juleps are brilliant. Did you know that Julep means something like rose petals? Maybe they were made with rose water.... but I may be wrong. Anyways, brilliant video as always, cheers 🥃
@AndersErickson can you use mint, peppermint or spearmint interchangeably? I ask because what you use in the video looks more like peppermint to me than what I know as mint (smaller and rounder leaves) in Colombia.
Looking forward to my mint coming back (I have a s#!t ton of it, can't kill the stuff!) So I can try these, as well as your version of mojitos, and anything else mint might work in (ideas?) If you need mint, hit me up! I've got plenty to spare from about May til first killing frost!
Thank you so much, Jeni! I didn't realize the link wasn't showing - everything is set up now. I really appreciate you saying something! Cheers to you! 🥃
i dont think the wall clock at the back works. if it is working and not a prop mate, this couple shot this video in nano seconds and has us watching in slow mo. pretty rad must admit. as for the cocktails they are banger. cheers
@@AndersErickson sorry the question, from your perspective would a vanilla syrup be a nice substitute for the sugar to add flavour or would be too much and cute the freshness from the mint? I'm no professional, just a home enthusiast, still learning
@@lucaspaciencia2414 great question! I think a vanilla syrup could work well - especially with the bourbon. Although the prescription julep has more components, I find the flavors to be a bit more subtle than the bourbon julep - so vanilla could potentially take over in that one. Definitely worth trying in both though. You could stumble upon the next big thing!
Thanks for the medicine. Who needs insurance?? I disagree though about drinking it slowly. Your site's professional organization is so welcome, as is the delightful Az. May I offer you a haircut?
I came across a recipe from Liber & Co for a Mezcal Grapefruit Julep. It calls for 1 oz. of their Rio Red Grapefruit cordial, 2 oz. mezcal, and mint. I haven't tried it yet (too many awesome drinks to try!), but it's on my list. Have you ever had something like this?
Tasty, simple, refreshing. Two juleps for you - one for each hand! Try them both and see what you think. Doctor’s orders.

Hope it grows big enough for you to harvest soon - cheers, Stephane!
so do you like getting pissed or just making the drinks? great vids!
He is a bartender as far a I know, but this looks like more a passion
Which months are julep season?
how / where do you keep the mint in the bar? in ice, water, the fridge, air?
Hey David! It's been a good week - sipping on juleps helps with that 😂 That's really interesting about the rose petals! Happy weekend, my friend!
@AndersErickson can you use mint, peppermint or spearmint interchangeably? I ask because what you use in the video looks more like peppermint to me than what I know as mint (smaller and rounder leaves) in Colombia.
Can u give one recipes cocktail but no alcohol plsss 🥺
Looking forward to my mint coming back (I have a s#!t ton of it, can't kill the stuff!) So I can try these, as well as your version of mojitos, and anything else mint might work in (ideas?) If you need mint, hit me up! I've got plenty to spare from about May til first killing frost!
I prefer a cilantro julep myself
Those drinks looks so good. I love you shared the variation and the cool fact about the ceramic Buffalo Trace Julep cup. :@)
Cheers!
I wasn't sure if people would care to see the ceramic BT julep cup, but it's been with me for so long - I had to share. Thanks!
I’d like to order the book you recommended, Imbibe,...wanna add a link 😉 (would love to support your awesome channel!)
Thank you so much, Jeni! I didn't realize the link wasn't showing - everything is set up now. I really appreciate you saying something! Cheers to you! 🥃
Lost me at drink them slowly lol.
I made a Mojito yesterday and it was gone in just a minute or two. Some drinks I can just down a lot of. :(
If you can get it where you are at. Use raw caine juice instead of simple syrup.
"The idea is to drink them slowly..."
"...OH..."
What was a mint julep before we added booze?
i dont think the wall clock at the back works. if it is working and not a prop mate, this couple shot this video in nano seconds and has us watching in slow mo. pretty rad must admit. as for the cocktails they are banger. cheers
never heard of PRESCRIPTION julep, but im sure ill love it, i like whiskey but i prefer brandys over wisheys so is an easy answer XD
This sounds like your kind of drink! Hope you like it, Lucas. Cheers!
Aww, yeah…
Cheers! 🥃

Liking how long your hair is getting!
Haha thanks, Cale! It’s starting to have a mind of it’s own 😂
DO. IT. 🤣
Spank the mint Anders! C’mon spank it! Spank it!
Az is just to damn cute :)
Double fisting Juleps! I love it 👍🏻👍🏻
Exactly! I might suggest gloves though - those things are freezing on the hands 😂
@@AndersErickson Will do!! 🤣
Great example of an alcoholic career
Thanks for the medicine. Who needs insurance?? I disagree though about drinking it slowly. Your site's professional organization is so welcome, as is the delightful Az. May I offer you a haircut?
Thanks, Lea! I'm going to definitely need that haircut soon 😂
@@AndersErickson I have to tease you about something and damn near everything y'all do is flawless, so that all I've got!
I'm really confused by your recipe? Mint Julep is a build in the glass/cup drink🤔
Dah, I just noticed something ... Your clock is always 5 o'clock .... somewhere ... Boy, I'm slow ....
Best feature in his videos! 😅

That’s an expensive julep with all that mint.
