  • In today's tutorial I'm going to take you through the process of designing a sticker using Photoshop & Illustrator, but more specifically, I'll show you how to set up your print artwork file to create cool sticker effects with a colourful holographic finish. By cleverly setting up the print file to allow the holographic effect to show through in key areas of the image, you can create some totally awesome sticker designs!

I worked in a print shop for a few years, you can use the overprint preview to show white plate areas on your print. Definitely make a separate layer for white plate and die line (cut line). Most cut lines should be 1pt, like you said with any of this, print shop will determine some of those things, but it might help to keep additional costs down (designer touch-up). Great video, keep up the good work!

Got any advice for someone looking to do something similar but on trading cards?

Overprint! I never thought of that. Thanks for the great advice!

@@namlocnz It should be about the same process. If you're doing the design work, measure what a trading card would be (length and width) add a 1/4 inch bleed line (offset path is quick for this), art and white plate just in the video. Make your bleed line a separate layer and color, make sure to always label every layer, hopefully that sheds some light!

The white opaque layer is actually a great and valuable tip! Thanks for sharing

Great video! It's great to see you the print production techniques. Most of the work I do is digital (web and social media) and doesn't get printed, so when I do create print files for packaging or stickers, it takes a minute. Thanks again for another insightful and creative video. Cheers!

Very Cool design and walk-through! I've been designing in PS and Illustrator for 20+ years and have done tons of these kind of designs for print on holofoil. Your process is pretty 'right on' with how I'd do it. They came out looking great!

I used to create cut-line paths in PS by making selection/ smoothing/ then convert to path (under the "Paths" tab "options" in PS)... I'd then copy/paste or export the path to illustrator. When "Image Trace" came along, it sped all that up. Using that option might even be a little quicker than using Image Trace in Illustrator - but it's still gotta end up in Illustrator anyway.

I did this as a challenge, being a noob on Krita software , and because it looks so nice, I used a photo of medusa statue and cosmos background also included her son Pegasus, flying into her shoulder.
It came out soo cool! Anxious to see it printed. :)

What would I need if I want to create my own holographic stickers?
    Set up?
    Type of printer?
    Type of holographic sheet?

    • @kennwood

You will need a experience printer(solvent, uv or latex ink) and cutter to print and cut vinyl best to use a company like stickemupgraphics.co.uk etc
