Kingdom Hearts 2 probably had the best battles, a mix of player-driven and cutscene-driven. The best of both worlds. You get the intensity and the player agency of the interactive sections whilst the well-timed reactions turned the fight into a cutscene for a short while. These cutscenes would generally be really well choreographed so you get to see what the player character can do. It's unfortunatley the best way to make an interactive fight feel like something out of a movie like the Matrix at the moment. VR should hopefully change things by suggesting a response to you and letting you do the rest from a special position, such as consciously aiming a sword to parry another sword whilst you're falling to the ground? Eh, the ultimate fantasy of an action game is an interactive and well-choreographed battle between the player-character and a boss character.
