Wow! Your bunk bed turned out beautifully. I love the color. Your children will get years of use out of them and they will always remember that you built it just for them. Awesome job.
Hey Tyler....I have been following your builds for a while now. I am very impressed with your skill level and with your candor. I am happy to see young men being great role models as well as great dads. I praise you for being who you are. God Bless
I was pregnant with my third baby while working on some furniture for the house. It is really encouraging to see other families also going the diy route, so thanks for posting this! I also loved seeing your son keeping you company during the build- mine did too!☺
Inspiring and supportive. I can now see why so many people use pocket hole jigs while I can also see how I could do the whole thing with my basic tool set: corded drill, jig saw, and a whole lot of right angle screw plates! Not as elegant but cheaper with my current tools. It's great to have a casual view of happy kids underfoot, too.
Great job there Tyler. I hope people watching this video and using your plans to build their own, REALLY appreciate all the work you put into making these plans available for FREE, and making a build video along with written building instructions. I noticed you use the same tecnique as John Peters at 10:28 , wrapping the power cord around your underarm, when rounding over the edges. I´ll try that. Good Job Ty.
+Bellevue Woodshop Thanks for the kind words Roy. All the effort has been worth it, without a doubt. Yes, saw the cord wrapping trick from Jon and it is actually really helpful. Now if your cord gets stuck it doesn't tip the top of the router and you can give it a subtle yank and pull it free without compromising your work. (Jon has good stuff BTW, different presentation style that is somehow very....relaxing?) Thanks for the support Roy!
buddy, your workshop is in a league of it's own, it is proper clean it's more like a laboratory, that is a great idea you had hanging the paper above the workbench, that is clinical, good skill's buddy.
Great job Tyler. Well planned out, looks great. I can see you put a lot of thought into this project. I especially like the rail on the top bunk. My grandson was watching with me and yup, you guessed it. He wants papa to make him a set. lol. I love watching your videos. I enjoy watching you interact with the little ones. Two thumbs up. Thanx for sharing.
Well done. Turned out really nice. Planning the 2x6 down just that bit made quite the difference. Looks like it helped make the fit that much better as well.
Very nice TG. Looks like some happy and proud kids. I can remember(just barely) when I built a set. Then cut them into singles when the kids grew up. Like the intro and the shop helper. JimE
+Jay Bates Thanks Jay. Yea, spraying saved a HUGE amount of time, was able to spray 4 coats in an afternoon. Never going to brush a finish again.....well, that probably isn't true.
Not at all a woodworker (my dad was) but somehow came across your TH-cam and subscribed. You’re so neat and tidy and precise and I just love that. Helpful and creative storage ideas for your tools and your home. Love your kids being with you and “assisting” (as me and my siblings did!). One thing, does “the wife” have a name? I prefer being referred to by my name, maybe she would like that as well. Great job! I’ll keep watching and liking!
Good job. Im sure your kids think your the best. The only thing i would have done different would be to cut dados into the stringers on your ladder. What stain did you use? I like how uniform it looks
Dado would certainly add some strength. There was a video were a guy drive his car on a pocket hole shelf.....it held! The sheer force needed to break it off this way is crazy high. Used general finishes water based stain....very uniform and dries fast. Thanks for watching Wes!
Thanks Josh! Finish turned out great. First time I have sprayed a finish....makes it the last time I will ever brush one! Could put a coat on the whole bed in 15 mins.
Great Job Tyler, Have been watching your videos and pocket hole joinery saves a lot of time . Amateur woodworkers like me (I am from India) get to learn and try out lots , We aren't so lucky to get good quality Pine wood here. Hope to see more videos from you in future, Cheers.
Where is the template for cutting out the top piece of head/footboards located in the plans? This is an awesome bed - and is at the top of my NEED list.
Very Nice! What did you think of the General Finishes stains? I only use the General Finishes Gel stains but I have been wanting to try the regular stuff. It doesn't look in the video like it blotched on the pine did you notice any? Love the color though, super classic look to it.
+david Boardman Thanks David. I was blown away with the quality of the General Finishes! I have not used the Gel Stain from them but I tried Varathane Gel Stain on a sample and it was pretty blotchy. This water based stain was amazing, very very little blotching and it was on open grain sections that would blotch no matter what you do. This was straight on the wood, no blotch control.....my new go to stain! Thanks for watching man.
Hi Tyler G, I really like this project and the video are awesome. I wish you could give me all the tools and equipment you used. I want to start building my own DIY things and I don't know yet what are the tools and equipment needed. Thanks in advance.
Tyler G, where does one get the template for the head rails? Have all material cut and starting to put together but need to cut out the head rail pattern first. Thanks
what wood have you used? Just the cheap douglas fir planks from home depot? If so I am amazed at how well it has stained, some minor blocthiness but not bad at all.
How many hours would you guesstimate the different parts of this project took? My kids would love this, but I'd like to get an idea of what kind of time I'd need to commit before getting them too excited.
Awesome job man! You should have made it a triple bunk bed though. Lol.. Congrats! Seriously though I made a triple bunk bed for my kids about a year ago and they love it
Just finished building this for my son! It turned out great! Only down side was what to do with the 55 gallon drum of chips I made planning and jointing!!! Lol
+CMR Woodworks | Chris McDowell Thanks Chris. We like the design as well, simple but elegant! Yup got a jointer and it has quickly turned into one of my favorite tools. Craigslist find for $180 and its in GREAT shape. Only a 6" but.....6" is better than the no inches that I had before! Thanks for watching man!
Great job Tyler and great tutorial. This the best design I have seen and I will use it to build one for my kids. One question : the way the top frame is attached to the legs with 2" screws in both sections of the legs, so that is 16 screws altogether, is it strong enough for heavy kids like mines or would you put some additional blocks underneath to give extra support. it is likely there will more than one kid messing around on the top mattress as well so just interested in your thought? Thanks again !
I have been up there and not felt like there were any strength issues. Could add an additional block if you want so you can sleep at night....(sorry that was terrible!!) Thanks for watching David!
Beautiful job, Tyler. This project shows that dimensional lumber is a good option for nice looking and functional furniture. How big of an air compressor do you have? I've read that you need at least a 30 gal. unit to do spray painting.
+Mark Hazlewood Thanks Mark! I used a 17 gallon compressor. It worked great and I didn't ever drop below the ~50psi I was working at. Thanks for watching Mark.
+cencalmatt Bam! Can always count on you man! (Is it Matt?) The HF gun is amazing...have never used anything else to compare but absolutely no complaints. I have a 17 gallon compressor and you will need at least that to spray. Thanks for watching!
Tyler that bed was awesome from the build to the finish. Thanks for sharing. I take it that was pine. Did you take the boards as they came or did you spend time looking for just a certain type?

Just wanted to verify the number of 1"x6" in your plans. Based on the number of items with 3/4" width my count was at least 5. Maybe I'm not understanding the cut list. Thanks for the great design.
Wow! Your bunk bed turned out beautifully. I love the color. Your children will get years of use out of them and they will always remember that you built it just for them. Awesome job.
Thanks so much for the kind comment Tom!
Hey Tyler....I have been following your builds for a while now. I am very impressed with your skill level and with your candor. I am happy to see young men being great role models as well as great dads. I praise you for being who you are. God Bless
+William Melendez This comment made my day William! Thank you so much for being a part of this channel and for watching what we do.
I wish you and your family a Blessed and Merry Christmas and Joyous New Year
I was pregnant with my third baby while working on some furniture for the house. It is really encouraging to see other families also going the diy route, so thanks for posting this! I also loved seeing your son keeping you company during the build- mine did too!☺
Thanks for the feedback! DIY is the way to go!
Inspiring and supportive. I like that little yellow table saw guide, because I love my fingers. Push sticks aren't for everything. Beautiful build.
Great looking bed, Tyler. It's very rewarding to build a bed for your kids.
+How To Fix It Workshop Building for family is a great little hobby. Thanks for watching man!
My girls are excited to try it out! They loved playing spot the kids in the video! Looks great!
Hi Beth! Lots of people like watching for the kids. When are y'all coming up?
Very good detail in regards to the instructions on how to build this. Possible project for the future once my daughter decide on one of these.
I've seen a lot of plans, I like this one the most, so far. Good job!
Beautiful bunk, mate. I like that it's not too chunky!
Quality work that should last a long time.
+Chris Noonan Thanks Chris...should last, don't want to make another one yet!
buddy, your workshop is in a league of it's own, it is proper clean it's more like a laboratory, that is a great idea you had hanging the paper above the workbench, that is clinical, good skill's buddy.
+antony bishop Thanks man....I function much better in a clean shop. Thanks for watching!
Building a bunk bed looks like such a fun project! Very nicely executed, Tyler - and thanks for the plans!
+FastEasySmartTOOL It was fun until the hours and hours of sanding....that wasn't so fun! Thanks for watching Kriss.
Great job Tyler. The kids will really enjoy the bunks.
+Michael Myrick I hope so! Thanks for watching Michael.
WOW Tyler...AWESOME, hats off to you and Mrs. G. Really great build, and excellent choice on stain colour.
+Sam K Thanks Sam...agree, we love the finish! Thanks for watching!
Gorgeous...I admire your skill and the most important thing is that you make it with your love.
Great job Tyler. Well planned out, looks great. I can see you put a lot of thought into this project. I especially like the rail on the top bunk. +Dave Pelcher Awesome! Thanks for the super comment Dave, really appreciate it.
Well done. Turned out really nice. Planning the 2x6 down just that bit made quite the difference. Looks like it helped make the fit that much better as well.
Thanks Kevin! I agree, thinning the boards down really helped with the overall look. Thanks for watching.
This came out FANTASTIC! I have a set of metal bunk beds for my boys but I may just have to build them a set like these.. Great job!!
+Frank Kerstein Thanks Frank!
Very nice TG. Looks like some happy and proud kids. I can remember(just barely) when I built a set. Then cut them into singles when the kids grew up.
Like the intro and the shop helper. JimE
Thanks Jim....kids certainly like the bed!
Thanks Jim....kids certainly like the bed!
Thanks Jim....kids certainly like the bed!
That turned out really great! Finish is really well done and the design is really nice.
Thanks, we really like the finish too!
Looks great man. That HVLP gun saved a ton of time.
+Jay Bates Thanks Jay. Yea, spraying saved a HUGE amount of time, was able to spray 4 coats in an afternoon. Never going to brush a finish again.....well, that probably isn't true.
Great job!! Finally a project without a ton of tenons and tedious joinery ... they look awesome. Those will be handed down for generations.
+D Day Thanks man! Yea, hope this is around for a long, long time. Thanks for watching.
If I had a need for a bunk bed, this is the one I would build. Well done!!
Thanks man....means a lot right there!
Really great project! Finish looks great on that dimensional lumber. I'm sure you were happy to have this one behind you-lots of work!
Definitely nice to have this one behind me, tons of sanding and way too much staining....but, it did come out nice!
Absolutely beautiful! Great deal on the price and design. Yep, not too low, makes it great to sit below.
Thanks man! After I went back and added everything up a second time it was actually only about $150 so it was a great deal. Thanks for watching!
Great Job Tyler. The first time I have seen stain on pine that looked good!
I was amazed. That is without a a seal coat as well. My go to stain now. Thanks for watching Guy!
Good job. Im sure your kids think your the best. The only thing i would have done different would be to cut dados into the stringers on your ladder. What stain did you use? I like how uniform it looks

Sweet Set up. I've been thinking of tackling this myself. Out of all the videos I've watched I like the finish on yours the best. Peace.
+Junk Pile O Matic We are extremely pleased with the finish on this project, attribute it to the stain I used. Thanks for watching!
Great looking bunks, always love the way your kids help---
Thanks! The kids love to hang out with me....."helping"! Thanks for watching!
Rock Solid. Good job, Tyler! lucky we've had a warm fall so you could do that spraying outside!
Thanks Art....I actually took a day off to capitalize on the weather, was a beautiful, fun day! Never going to brush a finish again.
Great looking Bunk Bed. I am impressed with the finish as well.
+Katherine Carroll Thanks Katherine...turned out pretty good!
Nice job on the bunk bed, Tyler! That finish turned out great.
Thanks Josh! Finish turned out great. First time I have sprayed a finish....makes it the last time I will ever brush one! Could put a coat on the whole bed in 15 mins.
Great job on the bunk beds Tyler, they turned out really nice.
+Saw Dust Maker Thanks Richard!
"Daddy made a bunkbed for me!" - Sooooo adorable! :D
I like this setup. easy to build and make any personalized changes into it with no major issue.
Thanks Eric!
Fantastic design and look. Thanks Tyler! (With #3 on the way I'll be revisiting this video in a year or so!) :)
+Jeremy McMahan Congrats man! If you make the bed please share some pictures when you get around to it!
That looks awesome, the finish in particular is very nice for what was once construction pine
+One Man Band Woodworking Thanks man!
Great build, I can only imagine the pain of all that sanding!
It was not cool! I think I sanded a few hours a night for 3 or 4 days. Certainly don't want to do that again for a while. Thanks for watching!
Well done man - you're going to get years of use out of those
Thanks Nick, was enough sanding involved that it better last. Thanks for watching man!
+Tyler G hmm, that's an idea... who can make the most interesting video that is nothing but sanding... :-)
Blahhh
Very nice, Tyler! Looks sturdy enough that the munchkins will get a lot of use from them. Maybe not enough sleep, but definitely a lot of use.
I am picking up what you are laying down there! Yea a lot of use for sure. Thanks for watching Vernon!
Great Job Tyler, Have been watching your videos and pocket hole joinery saves a lot of time . Amateur woodworkers like me

That is, without a doubt, my new favorite new stain. Need to stock up on a few more colors. Thanks for watching Andrea!
Hi Tyler G, I really like this project and the video are awesome. I wish you could give me all the tools and equipment you used. I want to start building my own DIY things and I don't know yet what are the tools and equipment needed. Thanks in advance.

+Scrap wood City Thanks man!
This gets me excited to have kids. Great video
Awesome, we had our third yesterday! Good times. Thanks for watching Robin.
Nice Tyler! I'm just getting around to my watch later videos. I might be making a set of these and will consider using your plans! Thanks
+Marc Schaefermeyer Awesome...Be prepared for a lot of sanding! Thanks for watching Marc.
+Tyler G Mmmm... Sanding! Now I'm hungry for lunch!
How many hours would you guesstimate the different parts of this project took? My kids would love this, but I'd like to get an idea of what kind of time I'd need to commit before getting them too excited.
Awesome job man! You should have made it a triple bunk bed though. Lol.. Congrats! Seriously though I made a triple bunk bed for my kids about a year ago and they love it
Thanks Moy! We thought of a triple bunk but by the time we do need it I can make another one. Kids would probably like a triple better though.
Just finished building this for my son! It turned out great! Only down side was what to do with the 55 gallon drum of chips I made planning and jointing!!! Lol
Lots and lots of chips! Saw your IG picture, looks great! Thanks for the feedback.
Great job Tyler kids going to love it....
Thanks Robert...so far so good!
GREAT WORKS
Hi. it looks great. do you still have plans of this bunk bed?
+Petras Lesas Thanks man! You can find and download the plans here: www.buildsomething.com/plans/PB12DEF76BA7B4202/BunkBed
That came out great! Nice job.
Thanks Doc! Was pleased with the results as well, thank you for watching!
Thanks, this helped me a lot planning a guest bunk bed for a cabin up north. And my name is Tyler G too!
Great video! What program do you use for the prints and cut list? Thanks
Great job how do I get the plans please
That came out awesome! Good job man!
+Carb IV Thanks Dude!
Great looking bunk bed, Tyler! Nice design. Did I miss something? When did you get a jointer? Sweet!
Thanks for watching man!
i love the paper roll set up
+stargatefever Thanks! Thought I saw another comment asking bout the material....was about $190 if I remember correctly.
+Tyler G yes i deleted it after i saw end of video.
Really came out great, and so useful!
+Darbin Orvar And the kids love it! Thanks for watching Lynn.
+Tyler G Dunno why I spelled your name that way....sorry Linn!
Looks awesome i need to get organized a little more so I can make my work flow better.
Thanks man! I spent a lot of time that not my about our shop setup....so far so good!
Wow. That took a lot of work but the end result is great!
Thanks Man, we are super pleased!
Really nice. I think this is the one I am going to make. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome job! I'm jealous of your workshop!
+Jenn T. Thanks! I am a fan of it.
Loved the vid! Thanks! And totally jealous of your garage!
best diy bunk bed iv'e seen great job
Very good project! It's really nice and I like it thank you for showing me how to build a bunk bed your the BEST!!!!
After the first 30 seconds or so of spraying it would kick on and ran the entire time I was spraying....which wasn't too long for each coat. It worked great and I didn't ever drop below the ~50psi I was working at. Thanks for watching Mark.
Nice project, Tyler! Almost makes me wish I still had young kids again!
Awesome job, Tyler!
Thanks Matt!
The bed looks great but the finish is amazing. Not splotchy like you usually get with pine. It looks like cherry. Great job!
Thanks! We are super pleased with the finish. That was without a seal coat either, amazing. Thanks for watching!
Very good project! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Felix!
Good job!! I 👍 the stain. Is the lumber pine?
Yup, just pine lumber. I was blown away by the stain as well.
That's a really nice looking bed, Tyler. Do the kids love it?
+Bruce A. Ulrich The kids love it so win for daddy! Thanks for watching Bruce.
nice one Tyler. great job👍
Thanks Arab!
exelent work Tyler realy like the end result!
+Martijn Fransen Thanks Martijn....am super pleased with the finish as well. Thanks for watching.
Nice job my friend, looks great
Hi Tyler,
22 2X6, 2 and 6 means 2 cm or 2 inch?
Sorry.
Beautiful job! Much nicer than the typical 2x material screwed together beds out there.
The finish came out great as well.
Nicely done!
Subbed. :-)
+NW Awesome! Thanks for watching and the sub....much appreciated!
Hammered! Great video and build. Side note, how's that HF sprayer? Are you using it with a small air comp?
+cencalmatt Bam! Can always count on you man! (Is it Matt?) The HF gun is amazing...have never used anything else to compare but absolutely no complaints. I have a 17 gallon compressor and you will need at least that to spray. Thanks for watching!
+Tyler G Central California Matt, yup. Ok good to know, thanks. And I enjoy your channel so I'm glad to support. I know the work you're putting in. :)
That's one great job, have a nice day !!!. Brian UK .
Just subscribed. Enjoy the way you explain things. Keep it up
Tyler that bed was awesome from the build to the finish. Thanks for sharing. I take it that was pine. Did you take the boards as they came or did you spend time looking for just a certain type?
+Frank Ingram Thanks Frank! Yes, regular dimensional pine from HD. I did spend a fair amount of time selecting the best boards from pretty much an entire pallet of 2x6s, took a lot of time but I only ended up with one board that had stress in it so the time was worth it. Thanks for watching!
nice job Tyler!
Thanks Andy!!
nice job...i try to do that for my kids..thank you for sharing
So good! Well done my friend! :)
+Make it Extreme Thanks George!
Gorgeous work!!
Lots of work for this build but totally worth it! Thanks again for the binge watching!!
Great job Tyler! I do have one question. What type of sprayer did you use to spray the poly?
+Daniel Ceja Thanks Daniel! I used a harbor freight spray gun with 1.5 tip. It's only a $10 gun but worth every penny, true harbor freight gem. Thanks for watching.
And the HF compressor from your shop tour?
Just wanted to verify the number of 1"x6" in your plans. Based on the number of items with 3/4" width my count was at least 5. Maybe I'm not understanding the cut list.
Thanks for the great design.
Nice work bro
