As well as the nostalgic joy of (SPOILER ALERT!) that catchy "Nestle Alpine White" commercial jingle at 5:12, which I recall someone aptly describing it as "a Calvin Klein ad for candy bars set to the best single Roxette never recorded."
To help balance out the Lysette Anthony fans in the comments, I was always mesmerised by Ken Marshall as Prince Colwyn. Looking back at Krull now, it's so refreshing that that the protagonist isn't an egotistical, overly muscled Gary Stu.
crap review...says female lead has a deep voice...dosnt mention how they fucked this char by having her voice dubbed by an actress 20 years older..a prob the most famous fact about this film.
I used to love this movie when I was a kid (still do) and now as an adult I understand that a big part of that was because of it's beautiful sets and costume design, as well as for some solid cinematic and good acting (Freddie Jones and David Battley in particular). It's unusual and bizarre and I love it all the more for it.
I LOVE Krull. Great story and characters, but if there was ever a movie that was made by its score, that's Krull. I put the Krull soundtrack up there with all of the John Williams classics. The music during the battle in the swamp is EPIC.
*When this film was released here in New Zealand it was given a G rating* I can assure you that 5 year old me was TERRIFIED of the Beast (it still gives me the shits to this day) but I came out of the cinema on top of the world and in love with the film. It's nice to see that this overlooked film is now getting so much love. P.S when I became a teenager I made a 'Glaive' in metal shop and almost got in serious trouble because it was basically a lethal weapon haha
Great review of an heralded flick. Krull is truly one of a kind..At first I didn't really care for it..but as the years went by and I saw it on cable more often, I fell in love with it. The SFX are fantastic for 1983 standards, and the score by James Horner is a pleasure to the ears. You can hear a little of Star Trek II in there though..And the Glaive is one of the most bad ass weapons in movie history. Another fun Fantasy flick from back in the early 80's is Sword and The Sorcerer..
Ynyr gave him the whole "don't use it until you need it" speech in the beginning but it just seemed like so many times, like when they were all getting killed by the Slayers, that was a time when he needed it. It was just some arbitrary time frame put on the item to build it up until the end when he finally used it. Thanks!
I loved this movie so much when I was a kid. This, the Dark Crystal, Legend, Labyrinth, The Never Ending Story, and the cartoon version of Lord of the Rings (both of them) all cemented my love of fantasy. But Krull was the one I watched to death.
Krull’s buddy Ergo is played by David Battley. I know him as the teacher in Willy Wonka and as the karate instructor in a Mr. Bean show, ergo it was cool to see him here.
Aside from the "magic" elements in the film (including from Ergo), I thought the film was really well done. If I could have anything from that film, it would be a copy of Lysette Anthony's wedding gown (its gorgeous) and a firemare. I love the idea that they can run so fast that they leave fire and temporarily fly through the air. (That scene is just fantastic)
FINALLY someone gives a halfway decent review of KRULL! I loved this film as a child and still love it, flaws and all. I don't think it's nearly as "bad" as some reviewers make it out to be. All of the points you make in your video are spot on. You also have a very good grasp of movie dynamics which most hipster-critics don't. Bravo!
Oh, I believe Krull is a great fantasy movie. It has its flaws, but then so does Star Wars. And it gets the essence of a good fantasy story down pat, unlike Disney Star Wars.
The scene were the princess is being kidnapped and surrounded by the Slayers is an amazing sequence of shots. the shaky camera and very little lighting really convey a dark theme where you're actually scared about what might happen to her much like a group of unruly concert goers might act around a lone drunk woman exposing herself.
That chocolate commercial was the best thing I’ve ever seen and so funny I can’t believe you even remembered that even existed to even put it into this you are the greatest
Ok I’m 11 years late, but this movie was on constant replay in my house in the ‘80’s from the wherehouse. I love it so much, esp since as a 6 year old girl, I loved horses. The stampede of clydesdales with fire hooves was amazing. And I cried every time the old man gets killed and is replaced by a monster.
The Glaive and the Firemares are two of the coolest things to come out of this movie. That, and James Horner's awesome musical score, especially the track Ride of the Firemares.
Krull - One of the most entertaining and enjoyable movie experiences of all time. Of course it's not what you'd call superbly good in the Citizen Kane sense, but it has a lot of things going for it.
This was a childhood favorite of mine that I also watched a few times again as an adult. I find that it is still awesome, no matter my chronological age... albeit there are forgivable flaws. :)
Hah! That Nestle jingle fully encapsulates the music of the 80's genre. I never was able to watch the whole krull movie as a kid, I gotta sit through the whole movie someday. Thanks, I always enjoy your videos man.
One of my favorite films from the 80's. I don't know why some people say this is a bad film even watching it now I still enjoy it.... great characters, acting, story, music and villains. Just some of the special effects that are dated I see as a negative. I think a film like this would be perfect to remake or maybe a distant sequel.
Holy crap when I was a kid I would hum this song while walking on curbs as a kid, this opened my mind today and shoot me back in time....it's funny how a song can do that. Thank you!!!!!
I saw this in a theatre when it first came out and loved it so much that I went right back and watched it again the next evening, something I almost never do, and despite the fact that I don't even like this genre of film. Later that year, Siskel & Ebert panned it as one of the worst five pictures of the year because (get this) they couldn't get past the name Krull, not knowing what Krull was. Like, DU-UH, the film makers flat out tell you right at the beginning of the movie...but nooo, that was their "big complaint" about it. Anyway, I had the chance to watch it again last year and yes, it still holds up for me. Enchanting in every way
I love Krull. There were a few ideas that the tech of the early 80s just couldn't pull off well, but taken as it is, even that adds to the film's charm.
I always watched this when it was on TV, cheesy yet so fun to watch, and the giant spider-scene looked amazing, creepy yet fascinating. I really like spiders, tarantulas especially as pets so that scene appealed to me :).
*KRULL* is one of my favorite movies. I even own a copy. One of the very few I do own. The notion of The Beast landing on Earth and being confronted by the US military is amusing.. squadrons of A-10 Warthogs attacking the Fortress while a couple of tank divisions hit it from the ground -- yeah!
When I saw this in the theatre, I missed the part that said, "Do not use it until you need it" and watched the movie frustrated that the guy let his whole party die without using the glave. Years later, while playing D&D, it was explained to me that the glave was designed to kill the beast, and that should be its only use. The movie made a hell of a whole lot more sense to me then. Good movie! I really liked it back then because unlike Dragonslayer, they didn't kill the chick. Best to you-
The first time I watched this movie I was very young (8 or so) and the movie scared the shit out of me. Many years later I saw it again and was pleasently surprised. Pretty fun / enchanting movie with good story, interesting characters and great effects. Sure, it's no masterpiece but I still think there are FAR worse sci-fi fantasy movies out there.
I think the only thing that looks bad now is the chroma key work during the firemare segment. The edges really stand out. Sword and the Sorcerer is also sweet. Thats definitely on the list.
I always liked the story of the cyclops.. he knew his fate lied with the band of heroes and knew how he was to die, is why he hung around them it was his destiny to die helping them. Yet when it came to fulfilling his destiny and accepting his death that was foreseen, he told Colwin that his time to die had come but it was elsewhere and tried to escape it only to come back and help them get into the castle and get crushed to death. In a way, the beast deal with the cyclops helped to seal his own fate by allowing the cyclops' to see into the future even if it was only seeing their deaths..
Maybe he couldn't use the weapon until he was inside the fortress or he simply didn't know how to wield it initially . It's like driving a car, he had the keys but he didn't know how to start it or shift gears once it was started . Yessum, this is one of the best fantasy films of the 80s, i would consider it an oddity because of some of the other offerings from that time but i highly recommend it . Another excellent review
Idk... my father took me to see it when I was 6 - for some reason this was one of the rare western movies we got to see in eastern germany. I had horrible nightmares afterwards, exclusively about the scene were the magic weapon is pulled from the lava by bare hand.
Three words as to why I love this film - ERGO. THE. MAGNIFICENT. He remains my fave character in the film - and I LOVE this film! Perfect? No. But, for me, it succeeds in doing exactly what it sets out to do - entertain people with a neat take on the sword/sorcery, fantasy and sci-fi genres. I love Krull. It's an amazing film with an amazing score, great characters, some really good dialogue...and it's lots of fun. I really hope they DON'T remake it. That would be horrible. Some films just need to be left alone.
Thanks to this a 80's ninja movies I made a fortune selling home made ninja stars at school, a week later the school storage shed was more hole than shed. :D
i watched this while growing up before cable, it was on FOX, i found it quite awesome, i also wished they used the glaive more, but ehh i'll live with how much they used it, they still made it look like an OP weapon. i liked how you thought up the sequel in the way you did, would've been good if done right, oh well...
I think the best thing about this movie is the epic musical score. To this day it still sounds amazing and uplifting. I also always thought it was dumb that he never used the glaive earlier. They probably thought it was too powerful and if he used it right away then nothing could stop him. The film could have been so much better if they had worked out this glaring flaw. Thanks for the review! Oh and the Nestle bit was hilarious lol.
The Glaive was indeed an iconic weapon...but, myself & the brethren nerds in my gaming group were way too busy being coveting that amazing and highly implausible sword from SWORD AND THE SCORCERER .
MARSHOMEWORLD ... You tried to write intelligently, and almost succeeded. It's strange that you have not looked at your comment in three years and thought to yourself, 'Geez, I sure screwed that up.' Then, all you needed to do to correct it is edit out the word "being" and then zip out the C in the misspelling of SORCERER. Those tiny changes would give your statement credibility.
@@JW...-oj5iw You're correcting a three year old comment? Why would they have come back to it in those years? The first response to it, bar a few likes, was two days before yours. For all you know they got hit by a bus the day after they typed it.
just when i thought i imagined this whole thing at least someone can confirm it existed a truly entertaining good/bad flick and a witty review on top of that!
I used to love this movie as a kid. I must have drove my parents crazy watching it over and over. Great episode, I never knew any of the behind the scenes information you gave about it. Really interesting stuff!
Thanks! I love the movie and its a bummer it didn't go over so well when it was first released. They had tons of unique ideas and it would have been great to have more movies in that universe.
+GoodBadFlicks I completely agree. Plus, this movie was made in the 80's and gives it that distinct 80's feel which for me, just makes a movie like this that much better. 80's films just had a certain tone about them that has always tugged at my nostalgia strings.
I absolutely hated this movie. Krull stinks of a paint-by-numbers attempt to copy a new trend with no idea what made it successful in the first place. Then spend a third of your budget on marketing and walk away. Forget about a remake or sequel. We already have a better version of this story: Samurai Jack.
Grizabeebles How is Samurai Jack, the same story as Krull? No time travel in Jack. No glave in Jack. Jack is alone, aside from a few team ups, no group. Etc.
You know, your suggestions for how to handle a sequel for Krull are pretty spot-on, and not at all farfetched. They did it with Tron: Legacy, after all. Maybe we should get a kickstarter going for that.
I didn't even know they wanted to remake this. I hope not.. I do like his idea for a sequel. Krull was a movie I saw as a kid and no one believed me this was a real movie..
Another fantastic 80's classic, and definitely an HBO special. The score is iconic, and the Glaive is definitely one of the coolest weapons of all time. By the way, the use of the Nestle's commercial was genius, and probably my favorite part of the whole review.
I reckon Krull is part of the Star-Wars universe, the Beast being some minor Sith wannabe warlord who got a rep in a backwards part of the galaxy by hitting a few lost colonies. Colwyn and Lissa use leftover slayer tech to make contact with the wider galaxy and later on, send their beloved -and gifted- little boy Palpatine for an off-world education...
Anyone remember that Nerf boomerang that came out around this time? I spent hours playing "Krull" with that boomerang...until the neighbor's dog chewed it into a million pieces.
While a lot of this movie hasn't aged well, it's still a lot of fun, and beautiful to look at. And the score is FANTASTIC! Rest in peace, Mr. Horner, I wish you were still around.
oh yeah! I'm so happy to know there are still folks out there that know the joy of Krull
As well as the nostalgic joy of (SPOILER ALERT!) that catchy "Nestle Alpine White" commercial jingle at 5:12, which I recall someone aptly describing it as "a Calvin Klein ad for candy bars set to the best single Roxette never recorded."
That mountain climb was almost as long as the Nestle commercial lol

I read this before it happened but was still completely unprepared. Bravo
It's been twenty or some years since I'd heard the "Nestlé Rock Ballad".
Oh and lost it at the Nestle ad. It took me a few seconds but I remember that commercial well. Thanks for the memories.

dropped many quarters into the Krull arcade game
NO DOUBT 😂😂😂 Aladdins Castle ❤
Way too ypung for going to arcades and especially a krull themed game ... was it worth it??
It was an Atari 2600 game and was near ET level of suckiness.
Same…so damn many.
I bought one of the krull arcade games a while back, lots better than the movie. 2 joysticks, like robotron, rescue the princess 👍
That Nestle commercial bit? Genius.
The Slayer the band reference alone is worth a thumbs up.
I've been trying to write a song as good as that Nestle jingle for over 30 years only to fail miserably. That song is pure genius.

Yuri Nate Thanks!
Thanks! That one had me laughing while I was making it
The Glaive was indeed an iconic weapon...but, myself & the brethren nerds in my gaming group were way too busy being coveting that amazing and highly implausible sword from SWORD AND THE SCORCERER .
The throwing weapon from Beastmaster was cool too.
@@JW...-oj5iw are you the comic book guy from the Simpsons?
@@carpetfluff35its probably ocd with a smidge of ADHD that compels him.
just when i thought i imagined this whole thing at least someone can confirm it existed a truly entertaining good/bad flick and a witty review on top of that!
80's films just had a certain tone about them that has always tugged at my nostalgia strings.
they may remake this they have everything eles
I absolutely hated this movie. Krull stinks of a paint-by-numbers attempt to copy a new trend with no idea what made it successful in the first place. Then spend a third of your budget on marketing and walk away.
Forget about a remake or sequel. We already have a better version of this story:
Samurai Jack.
Grizabeebles
How is Samurai Jack, the same story as Krull?
No time travel in Jack. No glave in Jack. Jack is alone, aside from a few team ups, no group. Etc.
I had the Atari game of Krull as a kid, although I hadn't seen the movie. I've got to say, the game really covers a lot of these scenes well.
You know, your suggestions for how to handle a sequel for Krull are pretty spot-on, and not at all farfetched. They did it with Tron: Legacy, after all.
Maybe we should get a kickstarter going for that.
Thanks!
I didn't even know they wanted to remake this. I hope not.. I do like his idea for a sequel.
Krull was a movie I saw as a kid and no one believed me this was a real movie..
The Nestle mashup? Genius.
Thank you!
I’ve always liked this movie. Seen it when it first came out many many moons ago.
Another fantastic 80's classic, and definitely an HBO special. The score is iconic, and the Glaive is definitely one of the coolest weapons of all time.
By the way, the use of the Nestle's commercial was genius, and probably my favorite part of the whole review.
Thanks! That Nestle bit I'm still proud of :)
nice one GoodBadFlicks nice one. XD
I still laughing about the Nestlé. XD
One of the better licensed games of the time.
If awards were given for Best Channel Episodes, you should get one just for working in the Nestle's Alpine White ad! THAT was comedy GOLD!
Thanks! :)
Anyone remember that Nerf boomerang that came out around this time? I spent hours playing "Krull" with that boomerang...until the neighbor's dog chewed it into a million pieces.
The beast
Same here!! My boomerang was green foam. I then made all my glaives out of cardboard and my dad's electrical tape.
While a lot of this movie hasn't aged well, it's still a lot of fun, and beautiful to look at. And the score is FANTASTIC! Rest in peace, Mr. Horner, I wish you were still around.
What, no love for Hagrid in his early years?
My husband introduced this film to me. I love it!
