Fallout new Vegas is basically that, it's the only fallout game i consider a true sequel to fallout 2, even though it isn't isometric 2d. The rest are spin-offs set in the same-ish universe.

The role-playing and freedom of choice aspect is leaps and bounds any modern rpg, but the game itself is so flawed, it really feels like its being held together with duck tape. Fallout 4 feels very hollow, but the mods (😏) are what made it enjoyable for me, but isn't something I will hold very high up.

Specificly nuclear post apocalypse CRPG would be underrail, wasteland 2 & 3 Underrail i heard is so cryptic you need to read wiki to actually understand how the game plays Wasteland 2 are great to play if you use some guide Wasteland 3 are good in its own way
Underrail is the best of Fo2's spiritual succesors, although wiki and forums are a must. Wasteland 2 is overall underwhelming, Wasteland 3 is better. Don't know much about Atom rpg and Encased

I remember asking my friend for a Fallout game, only knowing about the 3D ones at the time, and was surprised when I got this game from the USB drive he gave me. Needless to say, my bewildered middle school self fumbled with the esoteric controls, made a really bad build, and dicked around the temple of trials for almost an hour. I have some experience with turn-based RPG beforehand, so I had a bit of patience to spare, but the only one I actually finished then was Earthbound, and that was a VASTLY different kind of game. I seriously considered complaining and giving the game back to him, but my curiosity led me on and on, until eventually I found myself enjoying my time in this game, even to the point of actually finishing the game several weeks later. Although I have to admit that half the time I was on the Fallout wiki, looking for guides and exploits I can to get absolutely stacked with cash early on (infinite pickpocket money from that guy from Klamath, and of course, the uranium exploit) or if I just get lost on what to do (happens very often to the point that I spoil myself just to get the best outcome). Overall, I actually enjoyed playing this ancient game and actually got immersed to its immense world and interesting characters. Watching the ending slideshow with the best endings for every settlement filled me with such pride that I never felt before in any other game I ever played -- like I made such a significant difference in a living, breathing world (yeah, I did kinda cheated in that regard, but still!) Needless to say, my friend was genuinely surprised when I told him that I Ioved playing Fallout 2, and he admitted that he barely touched the game himself. Then I went and downloaded the first Fallout myself.

Trick to get past the pick-pocketing children in the Den: Enter combat near them, open the door while you're in combat, go inside, end combat. They don't pickpocket you while you're in "combat" :D

Somewhat miss these kind of games where you had a real RPG experience and a strong emersion. So many possibilities, scenarios, dialogues...
Pillars of Eternity, Divinity Original Sin, Torment Tides of Numenera, and Wasteland are like that if you haven't played them yet. Highly recommend.
