The Starbucks part really boggles my mind. Getting a coffee is literally the lowest barrier to getting to know eachother you can get.

I'll never understand why it seems like NA esports pros seem to have never played sports. I live Minnesota and had coaches in AAU basketball that screamed at us constantly. And in highschool football. Then I hear about these esports pros losing their minds over slight criticisms.
I guess my point is in sports, the US isn't this soft. So why are our esports pros such divas?
I played sports and competed at a high level in an esport in my teens those other kids at the highest level never played sports and just learned their craft in game which is why they’re so socially inept. obviously there’s outliers but for the most part how do you think these select people got so good so quickly lol

In EU, gaming isn't seen as much of a nerdy thing so a lot of driven, disciplined people end up in esports. In the US, there are so many different sports to play and so many great minded athletes, that most of the people who end up playing competitive video games are degenerates who have sat inside playing said games their entire lives and never learned how to interact socially. The only team environment these players know is some self-owned mix of kids playing online matches. They've never had a coach or been taught how to practice.
i think an issue is age. We as americans are very new to the esports scene so we don't have any like older vets to coach. its mostly like current players who step down to coach and then you have an ego issue.

Unfortunately I feel Stewie is, at some level, a narcissist. It's definitely a spectrum in my experience and it makes it hard to understand whether or not he is acting like this with "full" intention. However not being able to commit to one side of an argument, therefore never being wrong in his perspective, is a dead give away for me. Not to mention comparing himself to s1mple, that gave me quite a chuckle. As an American, it's sad to see how so many of our players let themselves get in the way of what could be a promising future. Stew used to get angry at shroud and nothing in old C9, although rightfully so considering at the time, it was the C9 old guard who were phoning it in for an easy pay check and preventing stew from winning.
To throw in my two cents, I remember when he first got picked up by cloud9, he was in a deathmatch yelling about how hes like steph curry to all the people fucking with him. It seemed by narcissistic.

At every moment he decided to cause friction first game, Starbucks, vod review, on steam, and even after he’s left he’s doing an interview like this. WILD to see one of my favorite C9 players become so jaded towards the end of his career.

My god, I knew that CS pros were being pushed out of top tier Valorant but I didn’t realise that Stewie’s stats were that bad. I just assumed that because Stewie isn’t an entirely washed CS pro like some of the others, he would just be able to hang at the top but there is no way he’s getting on a top Valorant team. Hope EG realises this and kicks his arse into gear for his own sake.

I may not constantly watch CS or the new around it but when I do I always know to come Richard Lewis, purely because of content like this.
Honestly, might be a good thing at this point if Stewie got kicked from CS and can't make it in Valorant - it might help NA from breaking out of the "I want to win on my own terms" mindset and into the "I want to win" mindset. If he becomes a Cautionary Tale, instead of an Idol of Worship, maybe thing's will change.

It feels like he either needs a mental break or he has had no interest in actually being pro in CS the past 6 months. Reminds me of Ethan going to 100T. You saw the drop off in the stats. Putting more hours into another game than the game you get paid to play and achieve results in.
His stream is becoming like Tarik’s. Can hardly watch him anymore because of how annoying the Valorant chat is.
What I like the most about this two part series from Rich is that it reminds me of the old Thorin's Thoughts videos. It's great stuff.

There are plenty of these so called domestiques who will hardly win individually at the professional level, but with their team they might secure hundreds of victories because they did the team role that nobody else wanted.

Its so amazing because the "main" roster is ranked 92 while the ex PA were 48th and CD where 57, they were OUTPERFORMING THEM in terms of placings and results before they were bought out.

look at zonic, blad3, malek, etc
if the org gives them the tools, they can build a team and make it work well. if they're thrown into a dysfunctional team, you get current liquid, eg, etc
I feel it is important to note that 99% of professionals let alone Tier 1 professionals have their steam notifications on DND 24/7 for various reasons (in matches and prac a lot of their time). Also these pros receive thousands of friend requests every day, I am positive he had zero idea MaleK added him. However, you'd think a professional team would immediately make sure they are all friends on Steam from day 1.
Yeah that deffo seems more like an organizational issue, it kinda shows how there was no structured approach to how to develop this team into a competing force. Or he could be lying up his ass and they did tell him.

This is a huge issue with many star players that experience success early on in their career before developing the discipline and work ethic to do the grunt work.

Richard explains it well - Coaches aren't meant to be hype men and just yes-man. They do their job BEFORE the live event. Regardless if people want to dog on adreN for being an analytical coach and not a hype man I would like to see Richard interview adreN and get his take on his two stints with coaching Stewie. There was a bunch of behind the scenes diva drama that he tried to resolve, and sometimes him and Joka just had to take it on the chin from certain players.

4 years ago I thought that C9 winning that major was the best thing that could happen for NA because it showed to everyone that it was possible. But it turned out to be the worst thing that could happen because their ego got so big it fucked everything up in the long run.

To be fair, I'm not entirely sure that Stewie meant for the coach to be like 'play more like Nico'. Although, the problem is Stewie obviously doesn't articulate himself very well so it can be difficult to discern exactly what he means (another reason your suggestion to do an interview with a journalist is a great one, *especially* for players like himself). I think what he may have been trying to say with that comment is like "Nico does some of these basic things for his A lurk that you don't do, which is why he might be more successful". But regardless, great video as always!

They became almost PERFECT at CS:GO. You could hardly point out mistakes or flaws in their game, which weren't covered by a plan B. They were winning, because they didn't try to become 5x s1mples. They eliminate all the mistakes they were doing, which then meant they were winning. All 5 (6, including Zonic) were all taking the trashy job from time to time. They made sacrifices for each other.

You don't have to be good at a game nowadays to be pro brother. It's all about your name. Look at Automatic, dude hasnt played competetively for years and yet he comes back and is instantly allowed on a pro team, the exact same for Nitro, dude was a pro valorant player for so long, then just came back to cs and instantly got a pro team. There are many more but these come instantly to my mind.

@@akeeMM because they still have more knowledge than most players. Someone like nitro can go back to cs and with little practice have more knowledge than most pros. He's a player that can play any position on any map comfortably, not many others in NA can and the ones who can do not have the experience of tournaments like nitro. It is an obvious choice, 2 years away from any sport and top players will almost always be competitive still, especially when you are practicing almost the exact same skills during that time.
@@naturalselection802 you seem to be remembering a different Nitro than I do. Also, it's not so much his purely mechanical skills (except for the sprays) that have wasted away in his time in Valorant, but his knowledge of the meta. Not insignificant, especially for an IGL of all roles...
If I ever end up coaching or teaching csgo, this video will be a crusial lesson for the players.

I am Brazilian so I'll make an observation that might be biased but I hope it makes sense to anybody that might want to read it.
The fact that Fallen got his old mates together (we all know that no one from any country other than Brazil believed in them, and I didn't either even though I rooted for them) in Imperial and still managed to do a pretty good job relative to what was expected from them in regards to the Major, to me, particularly, shows something about Stewie that doesn't seem to work, from what I understand about the game. I'm no specialist, of course, but it seems that Liquid Stewie (I can't comment on an specific game or how he played in mibr because I really didn't care for mibr at the time, and still don't) wanted the highlights, he didn't want the labouring that builds a beautiful win or at least an amazing try, which is odd to me since he managed to do such a great job at Boston, like Richard pointed out.
Stewie's mentality seems broken and I've seen soccer players being like that, and all the good coaches did was to never let them play until they earned it, while having talks in practice. Stewie needs a good shaking to bring him down to Earth again or he's just going to be another former great player that could have done a lot more but chose to believe he was the best and refused having the future he would have earned had he worked harder.
I hope that makes sense.

Fallen is an actual leader who knows how to utilize his teammates, I'm not really a fan of Imperial and I must admit I didn't really believe in them, but damn was I wrong. After seeing what they're capable of my respect for them skyrocketed. 60% of the team is over 30 and they're taking down some very notable teams - just shows Fallen's leadership skills.
Stewie on the other hand is not and has never been a leader. You can see it in his attitude, especially in the way he sees coaches. Twistzz left TL because of Stewie - and I've literally never heard anyone say anything bad or seen anyone being toxic to Fallen, except for Stewie.
It's sad, Stewie still has potential to succeed and I want him to do so but he'd need to let go of his ego, something which I can't really see him doing

Really seems like the problem in Liquid was Stewie. And Fallen probably could have succeeded with them had he actually been given the room to implement his own stuff rather than the team just defaulting back to whatever the hell Stewie advocated for whenever they started losing rather than riding it out and improving.

Not necessarily this one, but in a lot of cases no one knows shit until all is said and done, until all the info is out there. So, reporting on something to early, or giving or opinion to early can spread miss info or can be damaging. I would say that most people don't ever watch the second video or watch the correction, right. They formulate their opinions on the first bit and just ride with that. Also, I do understand being a journalist and, as it is your job, being almost required to report on it right away. This goes for every type of breaking news, not just this situation. Though we may have a few disagreements here, for the most part, your take is quite objectively correct. But yeah, that is my take on reporting to early, especially when its kinda all hear say. Hear say as in this dude said something and we haven't heard what the other dude has said yet. Does that make sense?

@@Qytiss this isnt a report. He's reacting to something Stewie said on his own stream, and interpreting it. That's not 'reporting', it's simply his opinion. If that is somehow damaging to Stewie, he shouldn't have said what he did on stream and shown the (extremely poor) attitude he did...as Richard himself said, why shouldn't he react to that? He's not saying events transpired one way or another, and it's perfectly clear where he speculates/makes very educated guesses.
When he was talking about being invited to Starbucks for teambuilding making him uncomfortable, phrasing it like he was about to be molested or something - jeeeeeeeez.
The thing I find mental about the 40:54 Mark is if you want to win at all costs why would you give up the valuable games in pro league to try new strats and get the team ready for the next tourny, surely if you want to win at all costs you'd be desperate to use that time to try it like scrims but in a match live practice, better than giving up surely?

Always thought parts of the NA scene had a massive attitude issue, and always tought Stewie2k was the center of that. But holy shit it was even worse than i tought. Acting like a middle/highschooler when you are 25 in a professional setting and he doesn't even realize what he did wrong.

It is shocking how many top players have no sports experience. When esports first started in the MLG days a large majority of pros came from a sports background because gaming wasn’t that popular, and most kids under 16 years old couldn’t afford online gaming and most parents did not like their kids gaming. Most of the online multiplayer gamers were people addicted to competition during the offseason of their sport.
Its very different now, and America in particular has a real problem with fundamentals. Most kids at the highest rank coming up in the scene are absolutely braindead just like Stewie. They can’t understand why a call is fundamentally correct, they only look at results. It doesn’t matter if people fucked up execution, if you are a coach and called something that fails 1 time out of 10, then its your fault that they lost.
This is why American teams pass around the IGL role like a fucking hot potato, and after every tournament if the team hasn’t won someone on the roster has to get replaced. It doesn’t matter if the team got better, if they didn’t win, someone gets replaced. Its actually disgusting. I don’t know how any coach is supposed to get a team to win when they have less than 3 months with any given roster.
When I was growing up watching esports I had so much hope for the games. I naively thought that esports would get smarter, more strategical, and more mechanically perfect. Instead esports has somehow regressed. As there is less and less jocks in esports, the top end play is becoming more and more like soloq. Random individual plays with barely any structure.

There isn't one really. Once stewies ego has gotten too big and he doesnt have respect for staff structure, plus coaching in ESports not being as well established as it is in other sports means that the players are often more valuable financially to the orgs than the coaches.

@@funkyfresh2259 ya i think he would more than likely do a really good job. if the players were open to his approach of the game ,and tactics. and also "Respected him" then ya maybe. but they could maybe also get adren, because liquid just got rid of him very recently. but NA is not a great place to coach at really lol sadly.

I think they signed Daps as a coach. If anything, he's used to a lot of heat and trouble in his squads. Improving a team only to get kicked shouldn't be unfamiliar to him.

He isn’t even the third best player from C9 to try their hand in Valorant. Autimatic and Tarik are both contenders for actual duelists for top teams in Valorant - Tarik is the definition of a pubstomper duelist player… and he doesn’t even have a contract with any org
To be fair, tarik is all in on streaming. He did mentioned that he's receive quite a bit of offers from valorant orgs, but declined.

Go to a soccer team and try to disagree with the coach, be a negative part of the collective.. you will probably get benched.
Go to a new dojo in the first day or two, and disagree with the master telling him that you know what your doing and turn your back to him when hes talking ... You will probably have your shit beaten by the rest of the dojo people.

It's really fucked up too because these kind of attitudes only work to undermine all the work actual professionals put in in order to legitimize esports as a platform of competition. Who is going to take esports seriously when we barely get any peeks behind the curtains and when we do its all a bunch of goo goo dada baby shit.

To be fair Richard, not many journalists these days have the kind of integrity that even approaches yours, so I can't really blame people for preferring to engage directly with the community.
He just had it too easy from the beginning, joining cloud9 as his first team and winning a major just 2 years later. Only other player that I can think of with a similar case is ropz. Mindset and attitude will never let ropz fall down the same path.
Amazing how his response makes him look even worse than if he had said nothing, would surprise me if he plays for a top team in 2023
So sad to see hubris kill the legacy of one of the most exciting players and stories out of NA.
