Michael Caine clearly loved working on this. He took it just seriously enough so that Scrooge's meaness stood out and was able to be taken seriously yet still had Michael Caine's gentle charm to it that made him fit in with the Muppets.

This is my all-time favorite Christmas movie period. The songs, the jokes, the emotions . . . it's all here. It still tears me up inside to hear the speech from Kermit after Tim's death knowing that the entire cast and crew were all feeling the absence of Jim and probably thought of him immediately when the phrase 'first parting among us' was said. Truly beautiful film!
I love your reviews and the outtakes afterwards! However, now I'm stuck with the image of Scrooge texting Belle "I want to put my spoon in your Christmas pudding, love." Thanks!

MD Jester he hands out high interest loans and when the people default on them, he takes their homes and rents them out or sells them, no matter the conditions of the homes. He obviously doesn’t maintain them either. He’ll loan to anyone but is very strict and swift on foreclosures (miss one payment and your history) hence the story of them kicking kids out of an orphanage. He’s a combo of a loan shark and a slumlord. Which sadly was very common in Victorian England, as there were little rules to control the banking industry and landlords. Orphanages relied totally on donations to continue. And there was also debtors prison.

We also see that he eagerly took part in Cbristmas celebrations when he worked for Fezziwig.
During Christmas Present, the book spends more time with Fred, where we learn that he will not hear ill of his uncle, no matter what. The book also has a much harsher rebuke of Scrooge's comments about "the surplus population", by the Spirit. Also, in the book, Scrooge doesn't visit Cratchitt on Christmas Day, but instead spends it with his nephew. He then psyches out Cratchitt at work, the next day, before wishing him a Merry Christmas.

I am not a huge fan of musicals either, but I am glad that Jeremy feels the same way I do about them leaving the break up song out of the theatrical cut. The movie doesn't feel as meaningful without it. Glad I saw the VHS release first!

That Scrooge song at the beginning and the Belle song in Beauty and the Beast are cinematic parallels with opposite energies. And Scrooge's love interest was named Belle. Hmmm, coincidence? I think not.

Scrooge loved money, which is sometimes called Mamon.
Scrooge lost his Beauty because he was too in love with the Beast.

Love, LOVE the sin deduction for the dedication at the beginning. It was particularly tough for me to accept any Muppet work in the aftermath of the loss of both Jim Henson and Richard Hunt (which may explain why Dr Teeth doesn’t speak, Kermit’s role is relatively small, and there is no Scooter or Janice) but looking back on this you can see the heart and soul Brian Henson poured into carrying on his father’s legacy.

A sin for Scrooge using his money to do nice things? His character arc is learning not to be greedy but generous. He had pinched every penny; collected every cent; deposited every dollar. His money muscles as you put them haven't been used for his whole life. Now that he's a changed man, it's time to put them to work.

The whole thing about ghosts like marley was that he was so focused on money he never did ANY good. The punishment being that he would watch the suffering of humanity forever while having lost the power to help.
Now that scrooge has changed he will now use what he can do to help.

"...deserves to feel sad for once..."
Scrooge is sad _all the time_ . It's what makes him a dickwad.
Also, in the original, Fred didn't hate him; Fred pitied him. Also also, in the George C Scott version, it makes it clear that Fred's _wife_ mocks Scrooge, and Fred disagrees with it... "...as tight as..." "Your uncle Scrooge's wallet!"

And in the animated Disney one, Donald absolutely loves his uncle but understands his boundaries. He tries to give him a wreath and invites him over for Christmas dinner but isn't terribly upset when he gets turned down because he's too optimistic.

I mean... I really feel like Scrooge does *know* who the dead person is, at least by the the time they get to the graveyard. He pauses on his way to the grave to tell the spirit that "a life can be made right", in a way that makes it vey clear that he's referring to himself more than this mysterious dead person. Like, there's a difference between being blithely unaware that you're obviously seeing the aftermath of your own death in the future, and knowing but not being willing to accept it until you see definite proof.

In the DVD audio comentary by Brian Henson he said that Michael Caine actually DID play Scrooge like he totally knew it was his grave.

  • @Naro_Rivers
    @Naro_Rivers 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

I disagree that Scrooge is crying like he wasn’t expecting to see his name on the tombstone. Based on his emotional buildup and dialogue, I would argue that he absolutely knew that it would be his name but was in denial out of sheer horror. When he wipes away the snow, it confirms his fear and dashes any hope of not seeing that. It’s like that dread you feel when a loved one is in a bad accident, waiting, and then having it confirmed that no, they did not survive. That’s the emotional progression of Scrooge in the tombstone scene. And going back, he was aware but in denial of his fate for the previous few scenes as well. He knew that everyone was talking about him, but hung on to that little bit of plausible deniability provided by the other characters playing the pronoun game like a lifeline.

I am a literature teacher and I have read this play a million times with my students and seen plenty of terrible movie versions of the play. This one is hands down the BEST adaptation of the play! It is almost exactly word for word and acted out superbly, despite it being a Muppet movie. That’s what makes it so charming!
