LSV, I wanted to recommend 2 cards that have really impressed me, caldaia guardian and occult epiphany, they are from a commander set so they have flown under most people's radar but both are very powerful and interesting cards.
to expand on caldaia guardian, its 4 damage, a card and 2 1/1 creatures for 3 mana, it plays well with natty order, clamp, cradle, delirium, etc. it was way under valued when it was released (as commander cards often are) but now is seen as a big sleeper by the cube community.
Very very rarely do I ever disagree with LSV’s decisions but I feel like M1G1 when he attacks with Tyrant and Etali with a bolt in the yard when you have an tali that can attack back for lethal next turn makes it pretty likely he has some sort of avenue to win which makes me want to block with the Etali almost always. He’d have to have a way to bring it back but it’s not like you just lose if he gets another Etali trigger whereas you just lose a lot by going down so low.
I'm wondering why he didn't balance first, killing etali and vaultborn (and 3 lands), then cast the metamorph to copy the vaultborn token, leaving them both with a vaultborn but himself with 5 mana and 16 life and opp with 2 mana and 5 life.
I think this is a legitimate line but it's not clear it's the best one. Instead of casting two spells for free, you draw one card, and your opponent also draws a card, that's way worse. The board state is better for sure, but you're also filling up the reanimator opponent's yard and giving them an extra card so it is likely they would be able to reanimate next turn. This is a very risky play to make when you're quite close to a win if opponent doesn't have a lot more action. If he makes it through that turn there's some good lines to victory with ballista. If he kills the board then not only will opponent immediately gain 3 life and draw a card but also might reanimate vaultborn and gain 3 more life. Plus the etali hits could just win the game on the spot if you got lucky. There are many lines but I think the one he took, all things considered gave the best odds for victory
Game 1 not blocking with etali seems wild to me, has lethal balista next turn and all they needed was a little extra burn to kill. What could have come off a reanimated etali that would have been lethal?
I think getting Fractured Identity would’ve been better than Academy. It’s a clean answer to the tyrant and you have the Ballista still if you draw more lands
@@brandonowen1069 no I know I meant grab it, block the Etali with the Metamorph and then fractured next turn, get rid of the Tyrant, draw extra card, gain life seems like a lower variance line than getting Academy with a bunch of extra mana without a sure way to use it (casting a 3/3 or 4/4 Ballista isn’t impacting the board enough there imo) and facing down 2 certain threats in Etali and Tyrant, with the Tyrant being resistant to removal
At 4 life Ghostfire Slice is lethal too. And Fiery Confluence. And that wombo combo that happened. Edit: um, Fiery Confluence was lethal by killing the Metamorph, kept forgetting that. In this cube I am just always wary of going down to six life against a red deck.
I think it was a vager that big creature was more likely than burn? It would have lead to life gain would put balista out of range of he didnt have etali to attack with. With firebolt in gy I think I agree that blocking seems more likely to work but at that point fractured cleans up better if it goes wrong.
Instant karma on Valvagoth lol. It's so weird to think about because he looks like such a timmy card, but the combination of basically hexproof, lifelink, and flying combine to make him a pretty lethal reanimation target. He's the powercrept Sphinx of the Steel Wind!
I think Academy was the fun pick, which is fine for that. But the best pick was Demonic or Hexdrinker. Demonic is better in 3v3, getting the bomb or combo card is more of a blowout against a ragtag 3v3 deck, Hexdrinker is less likely to be dealt with too. For me it was Demonic looking to wheel the Doomsday and just live with wasting one pick on that if it doesn't work out. B/U Doomsday in pod is just so good, you can take all the B/U discard and counters and just steamroll the table. Oracle did come, too, it was there, plus Demonic and Vamp and Urborg in a natural way, and an earlier Mystical if one believed. Edit: but, we didn't see Frantic Search or Gush I don't think, so not having at least one of those could have posed a problem, but maybe taking Doomsday pack 1 on the wheel could have bore more fruit.
I think I take the Upheaval there. Between that and Balance, you get two chances to save yourself in a bad situation. Plus with Academy, Urza, and moxen, it's a big game.
Great content as always. I think the game where you didnt block with etali it would have made more sense to have not activated the bank buster for drawing cards, and using it as a meat shield instead. You had pretty easy lethal on your next turn and didnt really need anything from your deck so i think a more conservative line made sense there.
Hey LSV. If you want to hard commit to something like Academy p1p1, isn't it a great idea to draft a good tutor p1p2? You can draft the deck as if you really will draw it every game if you have enough tutors.
I love me a Balance in Academy decks. But I think pick 2 after passing Demonic, both cutting Vamp and effectively getting a second copy of Academy is too strong to pass up.
Hi LSV, thanks for the insane amount of entertaining Cube videos you've been pumping out. Especially the, well, slightly unlucky Vintage Cube Live vids, which somehow made my own failed attempts easier to bear ;-) I also have some Cube suggestions: - Someone else already suggested the Securitron Squadron from PIP. I second that, especially in conjunction with new cards like the white Overlord. - The energy cards from the set, spearheaded by Liberty Prime, are also fun and powerful, but need support from other sets, starting with Solar Transformer (which the other decks will probably also grab as a replacement signet, I actually ran several for a while) - I found an increase in impulse draw cards (Inti, Laelia, Headliner Scarlett) to make The Lost and The Damned worthwhile, didn't run the numbers for your Cube in particular - This is probably too cute, but I like the package of Ulamog's Dreadsire, Kuro, Agatha's Soul Cauldron, Hazel's Brewmaster. Dreadsire gives an immediate proactive ability, while Kuro, Pitlord provides infinite Fire Covenants. (I also once went really deep with Minion of Leshrac in that package - it was worth it for the one game where it went off and allowed a squad of Bristly Bill/Cauldron-pumped mana dorks to devastate the opponent's side of the board, but then it went out again.) Strong recommendation for something weird and fun, though, even if it doesn't quite fit into the inner circle of power. GLHF forever ;-)
Can you please try setting your draft display so that there are 8 on the top and 7 in the bottom? Easy heuristic ro figure out how many cards will come back in an 8 seat pod.
LSV keeps drafting Academy decks with no way to fetch it. I like green in academy decks, for cards like Mycospawn, Crop Rotation (not sure it’s in the cube but it should be). Expedition Map should also be in this cube if it’s not.
So I have a comment about the losing skid, and it comes with some constructive criticism. Not of your drafting or picks, but rather about the commentary in general. I want to preface by saying I'm a long-time listener - I've missed very few of your vids since they started rolling out back with OG CFB. So all this is in the light of the fact that your videos are one of my favorite and most consistent sources of entertainment. I'm noticing that your commentary is tending more and more towards style and away from substance. I mean this in a very general sense of things - most of the commentary remains substantive, I just think that percentage has shifted towards style and away from substance. A lot of what we hear is "I like x" or "I'm not a big fan of X" or "I'm not as high as everyone else on X" or "X is busted" or "It feels like I should X". It tends toward very subjective assessments. Those are part of what we are all here for - your opinion, delivered in stylish fashion - but I think it is lending itself towards looser picks and plays than what we may have been used to seeing as viewers a year+ back. You seem to sacrificing carefully thought out reasons for punchy delivery. I think if you just were to make a commitment to being as objective as possible in your commentary, it would 'recalibrate the system' and the rewards would show up in the draft and the play. Thanks for all you do, looking forward to more content.
I think i block 100% of the time on that situation but i totally get it could be a desperate attack to fish for a trade into a hail mary reanimation on etali. Though spot to be in tho, i suspect that if he had traded and then lost to a random hit by etali everybody in the comments would have said "OMG LSV WHY YOU BLOCKED THERE?!?!"
In a life or death situation let's say. I mean i get that drafting Academy is fun. No consideration for first picking Demonic Tutor and wheeling Doomsday? That just looked so tempting to me. I guess i'm asking what you think is objectively a better route. Excluding the fun aspect.
Not close I think? Academy feels more narrow but more powerful, particularly in P1P1 when you know you can reliably draft around it. Also LSV Cube seems to support artifacts much, much more than the MTGO Cube (the Warhammer cards are doing some heavy lifting).
@@traycarrot First picking Academy is strong. First picking DT is also strong for the same reason. You can build around it. I just really like having DT in Doomsday. I think it's close.
Game 1 i thunk if u balanced before cloning , It was far Better. They get a token of vaultborn that u can Copy and It isnt a token. And u were in a far Better position i thunk. Am i wrong?
Why not even a consideration to Seat of Synod in p1p2? Artifact land that produces blue seems quite insanely good as a follow up to Academy. EDIT: Passing it twice hurt my soul. Cube is the only MTG format I play anymore and I've pretty much mastered it and there is just no way, balance or not, that you pass it again. At that point it was almost objectively and mathematically the correct choice. EDIT 2: Jesus it came back AGAIN. I watch your cubes all the time and $^#%ing hell you always get so lucky wheeling cards you should've taken so much earlier lol.

yes but its far far away from hexproof :) in some spots that ward will be like paying no extra cost depending on the board state

I mean it was just a french vanilla 9/9 flyer that game, but it didn't matter
G1…. May be going for the most complicated play possible and blame it on luck isn’t the best strategy.
Why didn't we go Balance into Metamorph the Vaultborn token? Leaves us ahead by a Vaultborn token assuming they trade their token for the metamorph.
