I impressed Shohei Ohtani with my Japanese and he hooked me up at Comerica Park

  • I didn't just invent this trick -- I perfected it! Asking foreign players for baseballs in their native languages? OBVIOUSLY that's going to help you stand out from from every other doofus simply shouting "Heeeeeeere!! Heeeeeeeere!!" And by the way, this wasn't just any random baseball. It was THE ball that Shohei used to warm up for his start against the Detroit Tigers on the day that he pitched eight brilliant innings AND hit his 40th home run of the season. He better win the MVP Award. That's all I can say. Oh, and Miguel Cabrera was attempting to hit his 500th career homer, so there was LOTS going on at Comerica Park.
I attended this game without my videographer, so I filmed the action POV style with a GoPro. Batting practice was a struggle, but at least I got to see Mike Trout in the outfield. Hopefully he'll be back soon from his injury.
This game took place on August 18, 2021. The Los Angels Angels won it by the score of 3-1, and because Miggy did NOT hit the milestone homer, I decided to stick around for one more day. Look for that video next and thanks for watching this one.

The language thing works really well, especially if its a certain dialect or saying to a specific region.
Was with a good friend at a soccer game (MLS) where he called out to the German player (and World Cup star) Bastian Schweinsteiger during warmups. What he said what something that only someone from the same region would recognize and not just "regular" German language. Schweinsteiger comes over, they have a 10 minute conversation (I understood none of this) and at the end says (translated from friend), "Meet me at the tunnel at the end of the game". He goes down, Schweinsteiger gives him his game worn jersey (yes, right off his body at the end of the game. Kinda gross, tbh) and they chatted for a few more minutes before shaking hands and parting ways.

My old tennis coach and his kids are huge Bayern fans (pretty sure they are of German descent). I got as much of a team ball signed by the North and South All-Star players that season. He was a nice person then and is still a nice person now. Hope we see him return to to the field of play in real live game action. I know its been frustrating for him to be injured once again. He seems to get injured often throughout his career. Many thanks yet again! Sometimes I feel like I'm putting in too much stuff with fans coming up to me. I don't want it to feel show-off-y. I just love people and I know that folks enjoy seeing themselves in the vids. If it feels like it's becoming too much, let me know.

This was awesome. I still remember getting free tix from some guy that worked for Rawlings at a Cardinals game halfway thru the game with my dad back in 2007. As soon as the inning ended, EVERYONE was at the Cards' dugout yelling "Albert, gimme a ball!" or "Albert, hey Albert!"
Little me, knowing a bit of spanish from my trip to Cancun years prior, instead asked him "Puedo tener una pelota por favor, El Hombre?"
I kid you not, he looked DIRECTLY at me while pointing, nodded, and tossed me the ball from that inning. I still smile just thinking about that moment. The smile on his face was something I wished I'd gotten a photo of that day.
Learn a foreign language, guys. You have no idea how much it means to these Non-American players when fans can speak small tidbits or small talk in their mother tongue. And 9 times of 10, you'll likely get a bone tossed to you for impressing them.
