      They use newer moulds and casting methods now but the original source of these ovens was made with those old moulds your dads oven was made from. Some people think its new to have an aluminium oven but they were made back in the 1980;s. Thanks for the comment mate.

    As an older American I had to go to the Lodge web site to see if they measured in quarts. Regular metal pans always were but growing dutch ovens were the same as skillets measured by diameter. Grandma would ask for a 10 inch skillet or dutch oven. I should say that for the skillet it was regular or deep. Dutch ovens, skillets, griddles and even cast iron waffle irons are horded away as is some camp steel skillets that well seasoned. Most are the 19th century to early 20th century cold handle brand.

    • @campovenking
      @campovenking  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment. Yes they would have been in inches in grandmas day im sure. We dont use quarts here obviously, we use litres but our camp ovens have quarts as their measurement. Im just educating my fellow Aussies that this is not how it was done before. That this is a new thing and this is why it is so. Cheers

      @@campovenking I was wondering if you ever do anything small in what in the US is called a pie iron, but I belive you call it a Jaffle? I don't think I have seen a damper or as it is called here a camp bread baked in one. I use mine for more than toasting bread but haven't got really deep in to it either as for most of 6 months of the year I am up to my backside in snow.

    • @campovenking

      @@57WillysCJ Yes mate, Jaffle Iron is correct, and they are a popular thing. I grew up eating jaffles as did many of us here. And the jaffle iron collecting community are very active with some of the rarer irons fetching a few hundred dollars at times. Thats a good idea making damper in one, I had not thought of that but it would work. I have used puff pastry in them to make pies over the years.

    • @campovenking
      @campovenking  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes mate but the thing is to a camp oven collector and professional camp oven cook like myself, there is no such thing as a spunsteel camp oven!🙂Camp Ovens are cast not spun, the original Simpson Bedourie was made from Tin I think and is collectable as a camp oven but the modern day ones are just steel buckets with lids as far as im concerned. And I am planning to do a video on this subject to explain my views. Anyone who has seen my show live will know my views on spunsteel. Im not here to trash talk anyones product but if its not cast its not a camp oven so I stand by my statement. And I totally admit that im a camp oven snob. 😬😬

    Nice video KB, loving all your content. Question for you, is a cast aluminium oven as non stick as a well seasoned cast iron oven?

    • @campovenking
      @campovenking  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank you, and thats a really good question. I think a lot of people dont really know what a really well seasoned oven is lol. Especially with the modern ovens, some of my older Metters ovens are super shiny. But to answer the question, the aluminiu ovens actually get more non stick with use. They start off goood and get better. I recently had a bloke by the ovens I use in my shows. They werent actually for sale but they were so well worn in and shiny he talked me into selling them and now im starting again with new ones lol. So yeah, they are as non stick id say. About as good as really well seasoned cast iron oven. Cheers.

      @@aussieinavan1774 theres not much in it really, cast aluminium is harder to burn the food, easier to clean and is lighter with no maintenance. Thanks mate, I'm loving all the informative videos. You mentioned when cooking big slabs of meat you like to have a lot of room around them and I am the same way when cooking in cast iron. When baking meat in one of these cast alloy ovens is it better to do the same and have a lot of room around the meat?

    • @campovenking
      @campovenking  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well thats a trick question. You cant put big slabs of meat in little ovens anyway. But the Aluminium has a less harsh heat on the inside so the effect isnt as bad. But I always prefer the biggest oven I can get, no matter what im coooking.
