Despite not knowing a solitary word of Japanese, every single one of these grunts says absolutely everything about what Yabushige was thinking and feeling in each scene better than any words could

These kinds of grunts and exales are such a big part of the male Japanese character, and Yabushige embodied them most in his signature gruffness. Really funny comp!
Took me so long to find out he was in Thor Ragnarok as Hogan. What an incredible actor wasted entirely in that movie. I'm glad he found his role in Shogun. One of the best characters, without a doubt.
Take not all studios. This is how you make a great show. Great writing, directing, editing and get great actors like him! I really loved this character. Shogun is one of the best shows.
i was so waiting for one of these to come out. i loved Yabushige, Tadanobu Asano absolutely nailed that role and stole every scene he was in. unless he shared the screen with Hiroyuki Sanada, then it was a fair share, they have amazing chemistry together
Yabushige was a relatively small lord(1) caught between a bunch of much larger lords on one side and his own very big lord on the other. Unfortunately for himself, he also had ambitions to be more than he was. Izu is a chain of moderately to small sized islands due south of Edo (aka Tokyo). Populated almost entirely by fishermen, it was not a rich holding. Which brings up a bit of an issue with the armies 'marching' to Izu.
Just finished first season yesterday. Woke up and first thing in the morning - to check if a compilation of Yabushige's grunts exits. It does, my faith in humanity is restored
You can watch the great movie "Mongol", Tadanobu Asano is playing one of the most iconic roles in his career, Temüjin the Genghis Khan himself. Very impressive masterpiece.
The first time I saw him was in "Zatoichi" where his character (more like Toranaga) is completely different in attitude with Yabushige, so seeing him in this overflowing phase was a surprise and a blessing. You learn to love Yabu despite his mistakes.
This dude stole basically every scene he was in, really great actor.

I think is was a badly written and unlikable character in the books, but the actor really gave him justice.
