I took this decision two years ago, from Stuttgart to Athens first, now I am living in Preveza. As I took this decision my son was 8 years old. I did not regret anything. I am happy living in Greece.

To grow old in the UK is to die slowly, this country is rapidly becoming uncaring, to be old is to feel discarded, dare you approach a child or god forbid talk to a child, you risk arrest and before you know it you are a paedophile!. Daniel your decision to move to Greece to bring your children up is spot on, well done. The Greeks have a thing about family bonds and the love of children and the elderly is in my opinion what makes society function at its best, that's what keeps a country together, it is vitally important, getting together, eating together, sharing things, talking, asking and getting the advice of older members of the family όλα αυτά είναι βασικά στοιχεία της οικογένειας.
I absolutely agree! As a person coming from Poland raising children in UK i wish I went back and raise them in Poland instead. There is no community here and everybody is bullied for smallest insignificant things. You’re speaking to my soul with this subject
I am Greek I have a newborn now here in London. Raising a kid here is 20 times more expensive than Greece. For sure it is much better to raise a kid in Greece. Safer, cheaper, much better environment to raise kids
It is good for me to get your perspective on Greece. My father was Greek and I missed a lot of those Greek things growing up. My mother was English so she steered lot of my upbringing with her perspective. I have longed to visit Greece with an eye on living there. I am 69 years old and time is ticking. I totally agree with you. Northern countriea supposed to be happy, I have lived in England for 10 years, Switzerland for another 9 years and I have the feeling that in Greece people are poorer but 100 times happier. So yes , these surveys that say otherwise are nonsense

I absolutely agree. First time I visited my husband's home town I decided I wanted to raise my children there. Especially having two daughters I love how Greek women have a sisterhood I've never seen in Germany and Italy. Greek women can be feminine and tough at the same time, it's not seen as opposites. Also in Greece different body shapes are valued more, it's not necessarily about being thin, it's a lot about how you dress, move, talk and shine through personality. Also I find Greek culture more inclusive for binational children. I loved seeing so many fathers at the pediatrician. I loved seeing teenage boys praising toddlers, playing with them and telling them how strong/beautiful/good they are. Community really also for me was and after 20 years still is the main reason I live in Greece.
I live in Crete with 2 teenage boys, and I agree that they have more freedom here and safety. However, the education system is seriously lacking and many young people have to move away for job opportunities

As a Greek Canadian who's been to Greece over 20 times, we always dream of returning back home. Yes, even though we Greeks that are born abroad consider Greece as home, it's the love we have for Greece. Thanks for sharing, and hopefully, my wife and I will eventually move there. The only thing that scares us is work? I guess I will need to research more on this topic..
I think there is another aspect to it and I would term it 'heart'. There is a general kindness and love for all children by society at large, let alone within the small community that is absent in places like England. Lived in London and I feel the same, children are tolerated rather than embraced. Parents fear other parents and children if they live too far away or they don't have a school or an activity in common.
I totally agree with what you said about being raised in Venezuela or Greece. I was born and raised in a third world country, Mozambique 🇲🇿 during civil war & communism, we weren't dirty poor like you said abt yourself or rich, but extended family bond was/still valued (I mean respect for your elders, decency, religion if you wish, etc are very important), etc, etc... Comparing with English system, not disparaging them, it's more Human back in Mozambique🇲🇿 and Portugal 🇵🇹
Work hard. Go for the tough tasks that your colleagues avoid. Become irreplaceable. You'll soon be getting 2000 euro or more. Nobody is holding you back.
you can't, unless you have sponsors, like many do here (I mean grandparents and grandmothers that have money and willing to pay). Otherwise, you would probably need an income of at least 2000 euro for 5 kids. Having said that, I know many families that I can't understand how they get by 🤔
The base of the Greek society is family..all the members have the security of the family..highly respected in 🇬🇷 are family and education..should our kids study at unis..
The greek mentality that hardens family bonds is the same mentality that makes the greek society fail and drives many young adults abroad. Most greeks do not hesitate to damage the society for the benefit of their family. They (ok, we, I am a Greek too!) will not directly harm their neighbour but they will easily create pollution or a traffic jam that costs everyone including the neighbour. This attitude creates an underdeveloped sense of community and disrespect to the institutions. You are right, strong family bonds and a child centric attitude are great assets for the kids and the elderly. But young adults need a functional society and strong institutions to stand on their own feet and not depend on their families. I wish your kids will overcome these obstacles and find their way to a balanced working life and financial stability here in Greece. These are the reasons Greeks migrate.
The NHS is free. But, i would suggest a private health insurance plan. Even for a 60 year old you can find a full plan for €2.500 - €3.000 per year. The private hospitals are pretty high quality.
@@leepluke8556 it's considered something should be given for " free" I mean you are supposed to pay from your taxes for the national health insurance but no one will deny you access if you haven't or you are a foreigner that haven't yet become a " local" you know getting the proper documents ect Having said that private programs are affordable and often employers add such benefits as an additional bonus for their employees 😉

I don't know much about Finland but it seems to always come top as Europe's happiest country - how come?! I met 2 women on holiday in Italy who were Finish but it was a shame only one of them could speak English. They were nice people as far as I could tell.
London is becoming more dangerous for teenagers. More knife crime, teenagers attack each other just for fun. Children dont play outside anymore. Me and my 12y old son just returned from Athens where we spent 2 weeks. My son felt all the love and admiration from grownups around him just for being a child in Athens, something he doesn't get in London. And random kids in a park actually wanted fo play together outside with him instead of being on their phones like in London. When we returned to London (and we live a good central area), a neighbour told us there is yet another gang appeared in the neighbourhood and tolld my son to be careful. I am considering starting taking him to school myself again because i dont feel it is safe for him to walk around on his own as gangs usually target teenagers of his age. So yes, London is getting bad, dangerous, super expensive and people became more mean.
There is so much to visit if you are interested in the ancient sights of Mycenae Epidavros theatre, Tyring Argos, the amazing museums, beaches, castles. It depends on what you enjoy doing. And Athens has everything if you crave more international and cosmopolitan activities than the province. If you like nature, beaches, island hopping, mountains, even skiing not far from Nafpkio you have a choice Menalo is a good resort.
For those who don’t know. Oxi day Oct 28 is a celebration of the annual anniversary of when the Greek Prime Minister said no to Mussolini’s ultimatum to surrender in ww2. The Greeks fought so hard that the Italians could not break through their defensive lines in the north. The Germans had to divert significant resources off the Russian front to take Greece. Churchill credits the Greeks with turning the tide of the war because the troop diversion from the Russian front slowed the German advance enough that winter fell before they captured Moscow. We know the rest. Churchill said that Greeks don’t fight like heroes but heroes fight like Greeks. And we celebrate OXI (NO) every year since the end of the war.
There's state run homes for those who don't have any support. They're usually lacking staff and money, so often the food isn't very good, and the facilities look very run down, but it's better than being homeless or having no care. They're looked after and often the staff is doing their best.
I think that this is an idealised view of Greece by you living in a small city. Athens and Thessaloniki (my home city) are becoming (or are already) inhuman and people grow distant. They are not as safe either. I have been living in London and I can tell you that it is a wonderful city, but it is unaffordable. I wouldnt raise a family here and possibly not anywhere in the UK. But I wouldn't raise a family in Greece either. At the end of the day, it is a matter of personal choice. Good that you like Greece.

Once I figure out or someone explains to me how I and my family of 5 can live on 800 euros(a month) I'm moving over to Greece as well.
That's the reason Greeks are leaving Greece...even if you earn 1500 and don't pay rent it's not enough for a family.

For those who don’t know. Oxi day Oct 28 is a celebration of the annual anniversary of when the Greek Prime Minister said no to Mussolini’s ultimatum to surrender in ww2. The Greeks fought so hard that the Italians could not break through their defensive lines in the north. The Germans had to divert significant resources off the Russian front to take Greece. Churchill credits the Greeks with turning the tide of the war because the troop diversion from the Russian front slowed the German advance enough that winter fell before they captured Moscow. We know the rest. Churchill said that Greeks don’t fight like heroes but heroes fight like Greeks. And we celebrate OXI (NO) every year since the end of the war.

What’s it like to age in Greece, are there supports or do you have completely rely on the family and what happens to those without one?
There's state run homes for those who don't have any support. They're usually lacking staff and money, so often the food isn't very good, and the facilities look very run down, but it's better than being homeless or having no care. They're looked after and often the staff is doing their best.

Greece is highly taxed as well ! They are more expensive and get paid less than Britts! Greeks are just warm and very kind !

I think that this is an idealised view of Greece by you living in a small city. Athens and Thessaloniki (my home city) are becoming (or are already) inhuman and people grow distant. They are not as safe either. I have been living in London and I can tell you that it is a wonderful city, but it is unaffordable. I wouldnt raise a family here and possibly not anywhere in the UK. But I wouldn't raise a family in Greece either.
At the end of the day, it is a matter of personal choice. Good that you like Greece.
