Haha, my apologies - when I wrote the script I was worried it would be a 40 minute video, and the idea was to keep it short and snappy. It ended up much shorter than I expected, but next time I think I can afford to be slightly slower as I'd be happy with 15 minutes. (It's too late for this months, but anyone who needs this one slower could set the speed to 0.75x and hear me sound like I'm drunk 😂)
You know I think I saw a video once where the creator had uploaded a video that was 4x normal speed, so you *had* to watch at 0.25x and it sent the algorithm crazy. Worked out well for them but I don’t think I’ll go that far 😂

I feel like I've caught up on the important goss in the Literary World! Well done! Hope you can do it as a regular thing. I'm reading Praiseworthy at the moment, darkly hilarious and cleverly allegorical. It's a chunkster and I've been trying to read it since it was first released in Aus last year (But only started it this month). The audiobook is helping me get through it, I love the way she narrates it. It's also currently longlisted for The 2024 Stella award and I'd expect it to make an appearance (If not win) The Miles Franklin Award. Alexis Wright is Nobel Prize worthy IMHO. BTW I like a fast delivery - I usually listen to most of youtube at 1.5 speed. Happy Reading!

Enjoyed your format! I Am Homeless If This is Not My Home was one of my best books read in 2023. My reading tastes are usually in the literary fiction genre. This was not a book to resonate with everyone, for sure! I did notice though, and it left me pondering (why?), many non-USA readers did not resonate with this book. The book is VERY weird..lol. For me, it was not about a zombie and weird love story. I was able to just ride along with the fantastical and not have to have it make sense, but enjoy the humor and see where it led me. It is obviously about grieving, but echoed the insanity and chaos of the U.S., especially since Covid , the upside down world of politics with Donald Trump and how we live in a world with so many conspiracies theories and competing 'facts' it is hard to discern truth sometimes. It echoed the absurdity, insanity and sadness many of us have felt in the U.S. Maybe if I had read it at a different moment in my life, it would not have struck me so deeply. Maybe not experiencing the chaos in the U.S. has nothing to do with why many did not like it. This was my first Lorrie Moore and I was blown away by the wild ride I was taken on that echoed the weirdness I have felt as a person living in the weirdness in the U.S. and left me in tears at the end as the main character transcends his grief and the chaos of life to show a higher side of humanity. SO much packed into a tiny book..I was impressed and glad it won something!:) Enjoy your content!

For me it didn't quite work - I was left wanting more of the relationship between the brothers and less of the weird posthumous romance. But definitely appreciated Lorrie Moore a skilled writer!

Hi Ben, I really enjoyed this! The length and pace of this video was perfect for watching with my breakfast - though I would not be agaisnt longer forms in the future. I enjoyed the reminder of dates of the book prizes that are around. Something I would be interested to see is recently translated books that are award winning in their own languages (though I appreciate that's a time intensive one to collate). I enjoyed seeing which books you picked to highlight as exciting new releases. I am a fellow 99p kindle deal scouter (I have a wishlist of books that I check every day to see if any of them have been put on a 99p deal!) so I also appreciated the suggestions there, though as these change quickly it could be a risky thing to highlight. I liked the general book news around publishers, general goss etc. Excited for the next one :)

Ooh that's a good suggestion - will bear in mind next time! The Carol Shields Prize is for women and non-binary authors in Canada and the USA. It's a bit of a competitor for the Women's Prize!

Do what you want. :) The personal editorializing is refreshing, though you might want to mention its presence at the beginning. Might also include a final warning to check sale prices before pulling the trigger. Either the Kindle sale isn't on in the US or the exchange rate is really out of whack today. :) Obviously people need to check these things on their own, but the annoying ones won't. Love the format, particularly paperback releases. When I see new releases I'm kind of interested in, I tend to think 'I'll wait and see if I still want to read it when it is out in paperback' because I prefer them, and then I've completely forgotten about them or just don't realise when that time comes around.
It is definitely hard to keep track of when paperbacks are coming out - it seems to vary so much by publisher, genre, and how the hardback is selling... I will try to keep tabs on titles that I'm interested in and share them though! Thanks very much for watching.

I thought the tempo was perfect at the start, until the titles started shouting out 😅 Perhaps you could choose some things/titles to focus on more and then have some info in the description and refer to that, if you feel like it makes the video too long to go into all the details slower. Hey, I'm a fan of this kind of video. I think some section titles could be clearer for those who might want to choose from the timestamped menu. For ex, "Book news" could be anything, as could "Recent announcements." When I see "Deals" in a bookish context I think of books newly signed by publishers (usually coming out in a year or so). Of course, umbrella headings may come in handy, but maybe Industry news rather than Book news? Finally, I want to shout out that Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret is now streaming on Netflix (at least in Europe). Apologies for the verbosity, apparently I'm procrastinating on some tasks today...

Interesting suggestion on original language prize-winners. I'll be honest I don't massively follow that at the moment, but will have a poke around on Instagram and see if there's anything I can follow that might keep me up to date.
I see we share similar Kindle-deal-hunting habits 😂 I have tried to be careful and only pick books that are part of the monthly deals, so fingers crossed they're safe until the end of April!

Really love this video, really informative and your charm is wonderful. I would appreciate if in future video, when you mention a title, there will be a picture of the book, sometimes I have a hard time catching what book your are talking about 😅

Loved it. Would you mind explaining the point of all the prizes? Like what are they awarding for? I'm pretty sure the Carol something award is for Canada? But some I've never heard of 😂 Other than that, I think this is a great format and you frankly deserve more subscribers!

The Carol Shields Prize is for women and non-binary authors in Canada and the USA. It's a bit of a competitor for the Women's Prize!

Love the new format! Have you had too many coffees when you were recording it though? The ideal speed for me would have been something between your usual one and this one, I think. But should I just maybe get use..no, wait. Do reviews at your usual speed and when you feel like delivering news for the impatient do it at this one.

Good spot on the Branagh/McGregor mix-up. Someone else mentioned it, and I realised that Branagh had been cast AGES ago and I completely missed the news that he dropped out and McGregor stepped in. I popped a correction in the video description.

Loved that! You're a natural! Great just the way it is. But if you are itching to change something...Don't! j/k. Do what you want. :) The personal editorializing is refreshing, though you might want to mention its presence at the beginning. Might also include a final warning to check sale prices before pulling the trigger. Either the Kindle sale isn't on in the US or the exchange rate is really out of whack today. :) Obviously people need to check these things on their own, but the annoying ones won't. Also, enquiring fans of anthropodermic bibliophagy want to know...what happened to the skin? Also, also...boy, has the cover of Borrowed Hills changed! 😲

I should have mentioned that my copy of The Borrowed Hills is just the proof cover - John Murray Press have a lovely house design for those. The magnificent sheep cover is still the final one!

Love the format, particularly paperback releases. When I see new releases I'm kind of interested in, I tend to think 'I'll wait and see if I still want to read it when it is out in paperback' because I prefer them, and then I've completely forgotten about them or just don't realise when that time comes around.
It is definitely hard to keep track of when paperbacks are coming out - it seems to vary so much by publisher, genre, and how the hardback is selling... I will try to keep tabs on titles that I'm interested in and share them though! Thanks very much for watching.

I thought the tempo was perfect at the start, until the titles started shouting out 😅 Perhaps you could choose some things/titles to focus on more and then have some info in the description and refer to that, if you feel like it makes the video too long to go into all the details slower. Haha sorry, I think I was worried it would be a really long video and tried to keep up the pace to get everything in. But it was a lot shorter than I expected, so I think next time can go a little slower. I didn't want a 40 minute video, but 15 would have been fine!

Hey, I'm a fan of this kind of video. I think some section titles could be clearer for those who might want to choose from the timestamped menu. For ex, "Book news" could be anything, as could "Recent announcements." When I see "Deals" in a bookish context I think of books newly signed by publishers (usually coming out in a year or so). Of course, umbrella headings may come in handy, but maybe Industry news rather than Book news? Finally, I want to shout out that Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret is now streaming on Netflix (at least in Europe). Apologies for the verbosity, apparently I'm procrastinating on some tasks today...
