Indies seem to have such a high bar for quality these days, both whats on the covers and between them! You can tell a lot of care and attention goes into every release.
Awwww, why is it so endearing to me that Matt is Welsh? My graddad was born in Wales. I have a copy of his birth certificate. One day I'm going to descend upon Wales and find my relatives. I'm waiting for my son to get old enough to appreciate it. I figure with a surname like Powell, they can't deny I'm one of them. :)
My wish list has doubled in size after watching this. Boy with a black rooster has intrigued me just from the cover and title alone😊 also, thanks for sharing these indie publishers, there was a few I hadn’t heard of!
Excuse me, Ben, but I am a busy woman, who has a lot of books to read already and also a lot of booktube to watch. But obviously a certain someone made it his goal to add a lot more books to my tbr. Interestingly I had not heard of The Boy with the Black Rooster, although it is published in Germany by one of the biggest publishers. And I had My Favourite out from the library a couple of months ago, but couldn't get around to it, so I returned it and put it on hold again.
Wow, this video is an absolute gem! I’ll have to go back and watch this again some time soon. There are just too many interesting books for me to be able to remember them all 😅
In a way, you ARE a bookseller. Folk like me, way over here in rural Texas USA, get book news and ideas that i never would have found from you and other TH-camrs. Thank you for your work. Now its off to my local (local being 30 miles 😉) indy bookstore today 😊
Thank you so much! It's a pleasure to put this stuff together, and even nicer when people enjoy it. I appreciate the support. (I would still love to be an actual bookseller 😅)
Great video & what sounds like an amazing event. I have ordered/pre-ordered 4 books: Amma, The Pages of the Sea, I Died at Fallow Hall, and Boy with a Black Rooster. I live in the US but want to support the UK publishers since that's how you learned about the books, but it was tough for Amma because the US cover is stunning, IMO.
Love this for you, Ben. So glad you had a good time, sounds like a beautiful and very exciting event!! I’m so so so interested in reading Sunburn! Some very intriguing releases overall 💪
Very late to commenting on this, but so much fun going to this event with you, and I am now drowning in amazing indie proofs. Our poor little shoulders! 😂
We had such a great night! Thanks for coming and it was great to finally meet you in person :) Enjoy My Favourite, Boy with a Black Rooster and The Museum of Lost and Fragile Things!
I don’t think it was me who touted Russell Banks, but if it was it would have been for The Sweet Hereafter. It’s a heartbreakingly beautiful novel, and then Atom Egoyan created a pitch perfect film that seamlessly transferred the story from Banks’ iconic New England to Egoyan’s quintessential Canadian landscape. Banks said he felt the film was even better from his novel, most likely partly do to his brilliant intertwining of the Pied Piper of Hamelin into the story, about a school bus full of kids crashed through a guard rail on to a frozen lake, breaching the ice, sinking and killing almost all aboard. Sarah Polley gives a brilliant performance as one of the few survivors and the moral center of the story, while the adults eviscerate each other, especially the lawyer, with his own baggage, who comes to town to make someone pay for the tragedy.
That sounds like such an interesting adaptation - I love when films are properly thoughtful adaptations where the filmmaker does something interesting with the source material. Thanks for the recommendation!
This event sounds like a lot of fun. Those indie presses are killing it with the cover art. I'm adding several of these to my list.

Above Us The Sea sounds fab! And the cover is excellent.
It's so striking isn't it!

There's lots of beauty in Wales so it's worth the wait. You'll fit right in in Powys 😊

The visual design for The Boy with a Black Rooster has been SO good. I love how much care and attention the indie presses give to their releases.

Haha I'm so sorry - if it helps I am also far too busy to read all of these 😂

"Too many interesting books" is basically the story of my life 😂 Thanks for watching!

Amma looks really good!! Downloaded the sample. Great little haul Ben 📚❤️
It sounds so great, doesn't it! And although I didn't get to meet her, Saraid was at the event and seemed like such a cool person!

That's so generous of you to support the UK indie presses. Those are all fab selections and I hope you love them.
So many interesting sounding books!
Indie publishers are getting it so right lately!
Love this for you, Ben. So glad you had a good time, sounds like a beautiful and very exciting event!!
I’m so so so interested in reading Sunburn! Some very intriguing releases overall 💪
It was tonnes of fun! And I'm really excited for Sunburn. Her new novel has just been announced for next year as well!
Boy with a Black Rooster and I Died at Fallow Hall sound amazing!
They both sound excellent in different ways. Loveeee how the indie presses push at the boundaries of genres and stuff.
Oh this is so exciting! Sunburn is one of the best books I have ever read, I hope you also love it!
High praise indeed! I’m definitely excited to get to it, and she’s just had a new novel announced by Verve as well!
Very late to commenting on this, but so much fun going to this event with you, and I am now drowning in amazing indie proofs. Our poor little shoulders! 😂
Haha no worries, I forgive you 😉
Was so much fun, and I can't wait to hear what you think of all of these!
Great video! And glad to hear that you & Bob are buds -- love you both
It has been lovely to meet him and hang out! Thanks for watching 😊
Sunburn is in my top ten of this year. A beautiful book and very true to life.
A sparkling review! I'm so excited to get to it.
Hi Ben. I'm from Germany and so excited about your opinion on "Boy with a Black Rooster"/"Junge mit schwarzem Hahn" 🐓😍
It sounds like such a fun ride so I am really looking forward to reading it!
What a haul! This sounds like so much fun!
It was so much fun! I would say I wish they happened more often but I'd never keep up 😂
Sounds like a fun time!
It was a really fun evening!
We had such a great night! Thanks for coming and it was great to finally meet you in person :) Enjoy My Favourite, Boy with a Black Rooster and The Museum of Lost and Fragile Things!
Thank you so much for the invite - I had such a wonderful time! 🥰
They sound great ❤
It makes trying to choose my next read so difficult, because they all sound great!
Impressive reviews. I’ll put this on my list, and this, and this, and…. I’m interested in what Bob has to say.
Bob will 100% read these quicker than I will 😂
The one I’ve read on the list and would recommend is
Sunburn
I read it in March for #irishreadathon
I've heard such great things about it!

I agree with you on Call Me By Your Name, I'm not at all a fan. This may make up for your comments on Hamnet lol
I have never rolled my eyes so much at a book 😂 Apologies about Hamnet... 👀
📖 🪱 💚
