That 220 Cummins wasn't a bad engine but the fuel consumption was poor usually around 5 to 6 to the gallon where the 14 ltr 250 bhp would do 7 to 8 mpg when we switched to 180 and 240 Gardner's the mpg was around 10 to 14 mpg and we never looked back as the reliability was second to none and rarely put a spanner to them. This was a great video and showed what skills you needed to be a proper lorry driver a Volvo or Scania driver wouldn't be able to change beyond first gear on a lorry like these, you wouldn't see the brake lights come on going down the hill of a dip on the road in these lorries they were truly professional men who drove these. Yes traveled a lot of miles in an A series when I was a kid , my old man used to drive for alan firmin , driving through London when there was no M25 stopping every few seconds at traffic lights hitting my head on the grab handle on the back of the cab , I think that was due not much leg room and hitting brakes too hard
@@henrybunn519 There's not the skilled drivers left anymore to drive them, all you have now is the synchromesh or automatic gearbox boys now with plenty of lights and silly slogans on their motors, they wouldn't know how to attack a hill as they would be too busy braking at the bottom of it
@@henrybunn519 Many owner drivers or family run companies expected to run their new ERFs for 15 to 20 years , some longer with putting the later cabs on, they were the best buy on the market and like you said "over engineered".
@@paulwilson3083 They was still going strong when companies got sold them then a lot of them ended up on fairgrounds and was still going strong when they got too and they wanted to upgrade and if they was too old for anyone to want to buy them the engines ended up as genorators for donkeys years more.
@@henrybunn519 You are quite right Henry, yes modern motors have good heaters and radio's but they've lost there way when it comes to quality engineering, I drive the modern stuff now so I can make the comparison, you can also see how the modern stuff has dragged down the standards of lorry drivers to.
