    I have a couple of fpv wings running inav. Love it! Auto launch, RTH, and loiter mode works great. Never tried any quads, but for wings, it's easy. Didn't have any problems.

      I've got a couple wings running inav too, but inav on quads is like a whole different animal. The first time I launched my 7 in inav quad it went up but wouldn't come back down because the inav default idle throttle is as high as it's hover throttle XD
      I'm also experiencing my quad autonomously doing unexpected things like what's shown in the video. I can't wait to see how this plays out in the next video.

    Inav has always been pretty good on return to home. Softly lands within a couple feet of the takeoff spot every time and has been doing that for the last couple years

    I don't think the compass issue is the distance to the cables. I had similar problems with the compass as long as my compass was installed at an angle. The software correction with the "Tilt" setting does not work in INAV. There seems to be a bug in INAV here. I tried everything possible and spent hours trying to get a correct compass reading. Without success as long as the compass is tilted. Only when I installed the compass horizontally did it work immediately.
    Therefore my tip is to definitely install the compass without tilting it!!!
    Many greetings from Germany. And thank you for all the support.
    Through your videos you taught me everything about INAV.
    Greetings Sandro 😀👍

  • @MarcFPV
    @MarcFPV 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

    2 Things:
    - Issue with your compass is, that its literally 2cm away from the battery wires. The current will completely mess up the compass reading. So you need a boom to mount the GPS at least 5cm, better close to 10cm away from power wires.
    - or you switch to the latest INAV 7.1 that supports mag-less full navigation. It just needs a but of manual flight in acro or angle and as soon as you have heading and ground curse mostly aligned (you can put both in your OSD) you can use navigation features. This is currently "hidden". You turn compass on to see your nav modes. then you can turn compass back off. NAV modes will disappear in configurator but they are still set and usable. It is this way as its an experimental feature so no one uses it "by accident"

      The compass cannot be used with lithium ion batteries

    • @MarcFPV
      @MarcFPV 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ivanbukin983 that's not true. It's all about separation. The main problem are the magnetic fields from the current through the power wires.

      @@MarcFPVthat's right, but if Joshua uses lithium ion batteries the compass will point to them and not to the North.

    • @MarcFPV
      @MarcFPV 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ivanbukin983 Liion batteries are not magnetic by themselves. Yes the steel shells can alter the magnetic field of the earth a bit but it will be relatively consistent. Barely affecting the compass. The magnetic field at tens of amps has a much bigger effect and will be the same no matter what battery type. I have build lots of planes and also a few quads. When the motors are off the compass was always on point no matter if liion or lipo is used. Only when current Is drawn it causes issues. Hence I said, separation is key. With 10cm distance it will be fine.

    Hey JB I have been building gps enabled drones for a while! my first ever "build" was a old phantom 1 someone gave me when I was 14 cause arm broke that's when drone addiction began...... ripping the guts out putting it on a different frame and fly! Now fast forward to today built countless drones with ardupilot and Inav and the most important part to having a good lock on your GPS is to have it lay flat not necessarily for the satellites but for the compass and the way the module itself sends the compass data and neither ardupilot or Inav are at fault...
    Secondly you might have the GPS mounted too close to the battery leads which could lead the compass to be a little wonky when you blip the throttle. I say might cause I haven't built a drone with the gps mounted to the rear always had a collapsible pole even on my XL8 (which is my smallest drone in my arsenal :P).
    Maybe give Ardupilot a try I don't think it supports F722 boards... They do have a list of supported boards and once setup you can do a lot with it

    One way to get satellites acquired without heating your VTX is to plug a powerbank into your flight controller for a few minutes before plugging in your flight battery. Most newer flight controllers will power up the RX and GPS on USB power but leave the VTX off. Some guys buy the ViFly GPS Buddy which I hear works great but I already had a power bank and it is FANTASTIC for this. I generally have 20 satellites locked on my first pack of the day. That makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Oh and it’s time to ditch FPV as well and try good old ‘telemetry’ as a means of knowing what you are doing. I set up iNav for the first time a week ago and had the same problem with the compass (Flywoo M10 Nano.) It was about 35 to 45 degrees off from north. I checked with a real compass and two iPhones. It never corrected itself. I also installed Lidar and optical flow. Altitude hold worked OK, but optical flow / surface mode didn't work at all. Position hold high up also didn't work at all, the quad just went where the wind pushed it. I'm going to try tweaking some settings and if I can' fix it, I'm going to try Ardupilot.

      Which flight controller? If the flight controller is mounted 45° to the frame, that could explain how you ended up 45° off.

      This could take a bit of back and forth, probably easiest done on the Discord.
      Other than that, electromagnets (curves of wire with electricity running through them) are powerful magnets which will disrupt a compass. So you want to have the main power wires from the battery away from the compass, and also some buzzers away from the compass.

    You DONT need compass to do navigation modes in 7.1 😎 disable it by putting the mag sensor to NONE and it will behave like betaflight where once you move it gets a heading and all nav modes work. I hate the damn compass so much I’m glad it’s now working without! Try it and spread the word 😎 it’s still in experimental tho but I made a video on it on my channel and it worked amazing for me even hovering for 15 minutes. The compass is affected by the magnetic fields in the motors and wires and battery leads so even if it works before u take off the minute u get amps in those wires the mag goes nuts and the same behaviour like u showed here happens

      @@senseisecurityschool9337 from what I understand it determines where east is based on gps position. I realy like these videos on 'other' firmwares. I've personally only used Betaflight and Ardupilot. I feel like Betaflight & iNav are the lagging behind. Ardupilot had GPS.... and everthing else locked in YEARS ago. I much prefer Ardupilot, far more options.

      Try flying acro/racing/freestyle on Ardupilot and you'll see where the Betaflight devs have been putting their effort, instead of into GPS performance. Courses for horses.

    Actually Betaflight doesn't make sense to me (I'm not very good flippy floppy). All of my quads, except Cinerace20, are running INAV. I can use Poshold whenever I need to stretch some fingers or adjust my goggles. I can use RTH when I'm too lazy to land. I wonder why FPV manufacturers are so much BF-centric. Let's just admit, most us use don't fly like mr Steele.

When operating inspires 1 in northern quebec, used to have no gps at all and flew atti all the time... one time as we were flying the same route, I noticed new Cell towers along the way and woilaa... 22-24 gps... Your compass is not pointing in the right direction . Just change it by subtracting 90 degrees from the current one .

    My multirotor is calibrated, the compass works correctly. It turns on and flies well in Acro mode. GPS shows satellites and the direction home. But if I switch to ANGLE mode, all sticks except gas are disabled and the drone just hangs in the air, drifting slightly. Who knows how to fix this, please help. INAV 7.1.

    I really tried to love INAV but I had so many problems with it that I gave up. I had to submit two pull requests to even get it to work with my hardware despite it already supposedly supporting it, and I never got the data flash chip to work even thought BetaFlight had no issues with it. and I had endless problems with barometer support, without which most of the INAV features are worthless. And then it smoked my ESC on the bench when I was just testing motor spin at low speeds. I feel like it is falling a long way behind Betaflight in terms of configurability and hardware support, and now that BF has an at least passable RTH function with landing, honestly I think it's "gamne over" for INAV as far as quads are concerned.

      If it doesn't power up at all, the FC may have a vtx switch built in. In this case, you may hab to turn on the power using an aux mode.
