    Today Stanley Randolph is going to give you a thorough rundown of the kit he uses when he performs with Stevie Wonder. He’ll cover everything from tom sizes, head and cymbal choices, tuning approach, and the overall vibe he aims for when preparing his pallet of sounds. He actually splits his whole kit into two setups, allowing his to capture both an old and new sound!
    If you dug this video, check out Stanley Randolph's hour-long live lesson:

    I love the idea of a left/right dual personality setup. And for some reason, I think there's something cool about playing the slave pedal with the right foot.

    I liked the 16” high hat symbols. But specifically the fact that he don’t like he’s toms with the bottom head on. That gives the toms a “dry” sound and end with the harmonics the top head produce when you hit them. Awesome!

  • @RorRiiZzLE

    Zildjian K’s will have that old but new feeling because they’re a fantastic sounding cymbal that was the original cast cymbal produced by Zildjian in the 19th century in the 1920’s I believe around the Great Depression time. So I believe that’s why those line of cymbals are great at fitting into many genres of music and many styles of drum kits.
    If you ever read this Stanley, you helped me really get into drumming and it has helped me a lot. I have a genetic connective tissue disease that really screws up my joints and back and pretty much my whole body and causes a lot of pain, but music helped me cope and then when I couldn’t do regular physical therapy I again turned to music.
    Since strengthening my core and the muscles around my joints is really the only way to help them, basically because my collagen doesn’t work and therefore screwed up my tendons and ligaments, so I stopped normal PT and got just a practice snare pad and a few pairs of sticks (including metals lol) to figure out what works best for my weakened grip. Eventually I moved on to a better pad and then about 7-8 months after starting the pad is when I got my first kit. A Black Ice Pearl Maple Decade 5 piece. It was really a matter of luck, since I’m currently awaiting for my disability results, I don’t work and wasn’t able to do much in college so no degree yet and so I’m still dependent on my parents for essentials and since I no longer can drive, my mom drove me to the music store for sticks and there it was just hanging on the wall and on clearance, so we got the clearance deal plus floor model deal plus it had a few little knicks on it, so I was able to get a really good deal.
    Then I really started to dive into the how to’s and history of drumming and music and you can’t really do that without passing by Mr. Stevie Wonder. I fell in love with his music immediately and started calling it “forever music” lol idk if I’m the only one who uses that term or not. But then I went a little deeper and kinda took apart some songs plus I was lucky there’s a few videos of you teaching on TH-cam, plus you yourself have a really good story that I sometimes quote to my parents when they want me to stop drumming for the day and I’ll tell them the story you told about getting up and then starting around 10 and then eat some lunch around 12-1 and then back on the kit basically till dinner. I also greatly admire the fact that you taught yourself to play both right and left handed at a young age, that and drum corps really seemed to have left you with just about equal dexterity and ability etc. in both hands instead of having that lagging left hand many complain of and I think that’s where you get some of that articulation on your drum fills that people tend to ask you about and the only answer you really had about it was to kinda loosen up the stick a bit more at certain times to maybe get a double on your last hit or maybe throw in a diddle instead of straight 16th notes.
    This is getting lengthy now lol, but anyway, Stanley, you’re the fcukin man when you sit on your throne. You have incredible technique, you can move around everywhere very well, you’re very good at keeping the beat when dropping a stick lol, and last but certainly not least you’re more skilled than Aaron Spears despite all the hype. You just simply have better technique and when you fly around the drums it’s extremely clean even when it’s almost like a dirty sound if that doesn’t complicate things too much. But I’m not a hater against Aaron, I just prefer your style and technique and skills over his and all 3 of us are big dudes that play drums and like to really work it around the kit. I just wish I could afford your cymbal setup man, my gosh.
    But yeah, if by any chance someone at drumeo actually reads this or Mr. Randolph does, I am legitimately disabled and fight everyday just to do normal things like going downstairs, so I’m asking that if someone close enough maybe just let Stanley know he’s got a huge fan and any advice or just words of wisdom or anything from drumeo also in that same kinda idea would be amazing. Like I wish I could be an edge member, but I literally have no money to my name and finally convinced my mom to replace my kick’s batter head after I’ve had this kit with the stick bass heads for over a year already. Just stuck the EMAD on it yesterday and now I could finally take the giant pillow out.
    So thank you for the inspiration and escape, if nothing else should come of this, Drumeo and the guys there like Jared and Dave and drummers like Stanley and Todd Sucherman and Gene Krupa and Keith Moon and many more have already helped me beyond belief without me having to pay them. Also other TH-cam channels like 80/20, Stephen Taylor, obv Drumeo, DBO, rdavidr and I’m sure there’s others I just can’t remember currently.
    So THANK YOU EVERYBODY!!!!! (Imagine Stevie’s Happy Birthday starts playing after I say that lmao)

    I have just got back into drumming after 50 years and finally I hear somebody that can play rhythms as it suppose to be played . Pure funk. These modern day cats are hurting my ears who are trying to play drums as a lead instrument where they think every song is a solo with a million licks. I am learning to tune these modern heads. I had lamb skin heads where you actually had to wet them down to make them stretch. That makes me old school from way back when I guess.

    I had the privilege of watching Stanley play with Stevie on the "Songs In The Key Of Life Tour." I still can't believe I got to see the one and only Stevie Wonder in concert!! Stanley wasn't the only drummer, but I guess you could say he was the "main" drummer. There was another guy playing a kit and there were two percussionists. The 2nd drummer might have been Gerry Brown. I can't remember. Great show!

      Luke Covey Naaah,, There’s lots of great cymbals out there,, Not just K’s and don’t buy the Jive of not mixing different brands,, that’s marketing HYPE-- I have like 5 different brands in my set up and they sound fantastic together-- I do admit that higher end cymbals of any brand generally sound better than the cheaper lines---

    The only way you’re going to have your drums and cymbals sound as great as Stanley’s , is if you have a great sound engineer following you everywhere you go!

    • @benking9160
      @benking9160 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not necessarily mate I think my drums sound just as cool because I have learnt how to tune them perfectly for my taste and I own a tunebot! Lol. Anyone can buy there own sound engineer for 100 bucks or so. As for the cymbals I own Bosporus all over my kit and then its up to me as to how good my playing is. The great drummers sound good because of the way they play, yes of course the gear helps but there's nothing magic that they have just TALENT!
