The vibe is heavy. This latin groove is not your typical go-to style latin groove, but once you get a handle on latin beats like this one, you won't want to stop. There's some significant polyrhythm development going on in this groove as well as independence practice for both your hands and feet. This groove, played by the one and only Stanley Randolph, perfectly demonstrates why learning to play Latin is such an amazing skill builder for so many aspects of drumming. Enjoy!

    Instructor:
► Stanley Randolph is the drummer for Stevie Wonder, NKOTB, Christina Aguilera, The Jacksons, TLC, M-Ten and New Genesis, to name just a few. Is there an Artist Stanley hasn’t played for? You don’t have to listen to Stanley Randolph play for very long before you lose your mind. Stanley’s lessons on 180 are so rich in groove that it’s hard to believe only one person is behind the drums. His latin sensibility and years experience in the pocket leads to a great sound. Pair that sound with his ability to move around the kit at lightening speeds (or greasy slow) and you have a drummer in his own league. Folks, Stanley Randolph.

The father of these patterns is José Luis Quintana, better know as CHANGUITO, from Cuba. Drummer and percusionist of LOS VAN VAN. The Rhythm is called SONGO. very great vid, Stanley rules!!!!

Exactly! It is a traditional linear Songo rhythm.

iago matraka I thought it sounded familiar. Thanks for pointing this out. I learned the Songo long ago so now I can revisit this great rhythm. This guy just gets in the way and muddles everything up. I would prefer Stanley just explaining the beat on his own.

...this guy is not only the personified groove to me, in this vid I'm only amazed by the way his hands wiping in the air and hitting the cymbals in a controlled tender motion to get this absolut calmed shimmering sound, in EXACT the right volume....... guess he never gets to hear: hey man, could you play your cymbals a little bit softer please, they are out of the mix.........or better buy some darker thinner cymbs....... he's using an old K Custom ride from the old Weckl era....... these cymbals are loud......... respect Mr. Randolph, so nice!!!!!

Actually this exact ride is a standard K Custom brilliant ride from the new line. Weckl's ride was a bit thinner and with a different hammering pattern than the newer version.

It is a Rumba clave and you also can have as son clave 3-2 or 2-3 direction. But then he clapped the son clave and not Rumba clave.
