@@jobejacobs62depends on their personality, someone like yugi is a world Champion, so the deck Paul picked for him makes sense, if he wants to keep his crown.
With Kaiba’s obsession with power and winning I could absolutely see him on Snake-Eyes Diabelstar. Plus it has a big scary 3K dragon. Oh and it’s a billion dollars.
Thought the same, and for Atem I was thinking on the Chaos Synchro monsters, Chaos Angel, Archfiend, all that, since originally Atem/Yugi's deck was very light and dark focused mirroring the darker nature of atem and the light-heartedness of yugi
With Espa Roba, I was thinking Psy-Frames more than anything. It's centered around Driver, which is reminiscent of a deck centered around Jinzo and "predicting the future" ties in well with how Psy-Frames play in response to what your opponent does.
Now this is a great take! Instead of defaulting to a pre-existing cards turned archetypes, you looked at the characters' personalities and playstyles and chose a modern fit. Love how much thought went into this! Makes your channel one of the greats!
Agreed. I was super disappointed when another youtuber posted a video that was just "Here's the deck they play. Its gotten support." because that just felt so boring.
Grandpa Muto would absolutely use Subterror. It has that tomb-raiding dungeon-delving feel from his older days as an archaeologist, while having some elements of playfulness with how the humanoid cards are acting like an adventurer party and playing a guessing game with facedown behemoths. Also adding some control elements might fit with how an older, more experienced character is perceived in the anime
He'd probably torture people by playing a stun deck. Haha. Just like he had Vengeful Bog Spirit back in the day, he'd probably do similar stunts like with the Gozen cards.
You should take this concept and do a series of duel videos where the Yu-gi-oh characters use these modern decks in a revamped duelist kingdom, battle city, etc.
I can imagine that one scene in manga where Kaiba said that Yugi deck are predictable as glass box is redone by him flipping D. Barrier to stop him from fusing lol
Atem with Branded would actually be amazing. Not just for the reasons you mentioned, but also because it's a very protagonist-friendly deck. Since there are so many different variations on Branded, Yugi can keep the core of it while swapping out monsters or archetypes throughout the series to show progression, or to counter specific opponents.
Weevil is the kind of player who would first play Thunder Dragon, then Eldlich Stun in the rematch, and after 3 years timeskip, he would play Spright. Edit: His boss monster is Maxx C
I could see Mai playing a pure Diabellestar/Sinful Spoils deck, since Mai and Diabellestar are both rogue types that play hard and chase that dollar. Then maybe she splashes Flamberge as the new "Harpy's pet Dragon". Additionally, Ishizu might like Prediction Princess, since they're mysterious monsters that flip down everything and can hinder the opponent.
Dragunity for Joey is also suprisingly because it would give that little nudge nudge towards his friendship/relationship/situationship with Mai due to Winged Beasts, his rivalry with Kaiba due to dragons, his lessons from Yigi and Grandpa Muto about not juat using monsters (he could easily have tried using Dragunity without the support or even without tuners), and they still have that Warrior vibe even if they aren't warriors
I can see Tristian wasting a throwaway midseason bosses time by bricking on his flower cardian deck for a whole episode while the gang is in the background trying to thwart the villians evil plans.
mai would play Labrynth i say. think about it. she a pretty lady that acts like a villain and has her guard up (the labrynth traps)and play hard to get, but she secretly wants the knight lady to get to her,but she just acts hard to get and like a tsundere. mai is the lovely lady and the lady knight is joey(he also play a lot of warriors and knights). joey just need to get pass mai defenses to see her good real self and "sweep her off her feet". he just need to work for it.
oh yeah tia would 2000% play purrely. it's all about cute monsters friendship and happy memories. she will also have a Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS because yami gave her one just in case(which she will use on joey to win)
Very good call! I considered them as well, but thought it was a bit too "Trap heavy" for her style. However I think your explanation completely changed my mind. Between this and one other comment, I'm now torn between Labrynth and Mikanko for her!
For me Tearlament or Lyrulisc are decks that fits Mai more. Lab fits Yami Bakura's playstyle and even Konami knows that. I mean all his Spirit Message cards are in the Master Duel Lab pack.
I definitely feel Fire Kings for Marik as he’s all about those fire birds. But if there was another really good deck for him I feel it be Lair of Darkness. It’s all about manipulating your opponent by tributes there monsters. But also torturing them with viruses and other trap cards. As for Yami Bakura. What better deck for a puppet master than Shaddolls. Plus using warped twisted versions of other monsters feels right up his alley.
I feel like Fire Kings would be the "good" Marik's base deck, and then when his evil half comes out, he adds in Snake Eyes to it to become an ultra menace with a big beater than he can keep resummoning and keep using to blow up the opponent, just like how Yami Marik played Ra - always cheating it out and bringing it back. Lair of Darkness honestly feels more Bakura-esque to me. Using traps and monsters to constantly control the game state and whittle them down. Marik wants them to hurt and scream in agony, while Bakura wants you to feel hopeless and wallow in despair.
@@Mrryn I was actually thinking Snake eyes would be a good deck for Bakura. As the witch’s journey to get the treasures mirrors his own quest for the millennium items.
Okay, but here's the important question: WOULD Yami Yugi puppet lock his opponent? (My guess would be yes, if you really pissed him off. This would be the modern equivalent of what he did to Weevil, where instead of attacking even after the game is over, he'd just puppet lock you turn after turn while refusing to finish you off)
Yami Yugi with Branded sounds interesting. I also play the deck myself on TCG and I always see new things I can do and it really relies on your decision making skills and so many things work with it. I personally like having Dark Magician in it because the deck can make Dragoon which is a TCG thing
I think Branded being the pick for him has 2 main things going for it. For starters, Branded feels like a protagonist deck. Specifically the Albaz side of it. Many of the (lesser played) branded cards try to marry it between two archetypes and cross the bridge between them, such as Incredible Ecclesia and a few others. Yami would frequently merge his monsters with his friends' monsters in some capacity and many of the Albaz fusions are Albaz + some other archetype (usually). Ecclesia and later Cartesia also easily fulfills the Dark Magician Girl vibes. Next, it's the versatility of the deck and the power of "drawing the out". Yami is the best person to give a pile of 1-of cards to because he has the power to draw the out if he's ever backed into a corner. Given how many cards branded has that are branded themselves or branded-adjacent, he would be the king of the pile. I could totally see him getting his board blown up and his hand is majorly exhausted. Then he top decks Branded in White and swings himself back into the game or potentially wins on the spot. Maybe just top decking Fallen of Albaz and having him eat a boss monster in a simplified game state and swinging for game with Titaniklad or Mirrorjade. Or even just throwing out Albaz the Ashen after a super long and grueling game and he gets like +3000 attack (15 monsters in GY) and just swinging for game on the spot. I feel like Yami would lean a lot more into the "Albaz side" of branded, that much is certain.
I would have given Pegasus "Fluffals/Frightfurs" myself. It really mirrors his "Toon/Relinquished" deck with it being playful at first but becoming something more sinister.
4:21 Kashtira feels like a deck gozaburo would use if he took duel monsters seriously. It’s he not Kaiba who wanted to rule the world and would burn it down if he couldn’t.
I think the coolest idea with Yami playing Branded and Kaiba playing Kashtira (especially for the META a few months ago) is how strong both decks were (and still are) and how either deck could win. Branded being the more tool-box/flexible option with many options to counter for winning in a longer game and Kashtira being more aggressive and depriving with zone locking and banishing to crush your opponent.
For Mai I would think either the Twins or even Sky Striker, especially since Sky Striker is in essence one of 2 girls in a Mech Suits, while also keeping her high flying aesthetic of the Harpies, and the synergistic properties of the Amazoness Monsters. And I fully agree with Atem's choice of Branded. That whole archetype screamed Protagonist, granted it might have something to do with the stat lines on most of the boss monsters, with Mirror Jade being like the only one that breaks the status quo.
It’s also quite literally a deck with only 1-2 main deck monsters that are supported by either changing form via spells or backed up in general by nothing but Spells/Traps. Which is exactly how her two DK duels played out.
I had thoughts for Mai and Solomon Muto specifically! For Mai, I think Mikanko could be a good fit! It's definitely a little on the "girlier" side, but to me a) that goes along with her prominent usage of Harpie and Amazoness as strongly "female-inspires" decks, b) it plays into how her earlier appearances had her taking advantage of male duelists underestimating her (especially with the Mikanko stat lines), and c) the way Mikanko plays and especially interacts with battle is similar to how her duel against Joey saw her make tricky use of her Flying monsters. In addition, a case could be made for the trickier equip spells being vaguely reminiscent of the tricks she'd play in early duels For Solomon Muto, I'd make a case for Memento! It strikes a similar chord as Adamancipator in terms of looking to the past, the overall gameplan of "assemble the combo to play the big monster" present somewhat in Exodia and very present in his KC grand prix deck is similar to what Memento wants to do, and, given that this sort of rebooted series clearly features newer cards, the fact that all but one of the Memento monsters are retrained old monsters suits him well!
This is such a fun idea, great suggestions. I do think Vaylantz is very Duke Devlin though, there’s a ninja and everything! For Bakura, considering Diabond is his Ka- I can see Ogdoadic or even Mementolan.
With Raika coming out and their really freaky aesthetic combined with Ogdoadic's already fitting aesthetic to Yami Bakura's origins, I think Raika-Ogdo would be a perfect deck for him.
Love the writing in this, rather than a simple discussion I felt nostalgic hearing these concepts and other archetype are interesting to hear about too Great one brotha
I have thought about this before and came up with a few Yugi/Atem -> Endymion (DARK Spellcaster like DM so it makes sense) Ishizu -> Ishizu Tear lol or maybe Ishizu Loghtsworn? Joey -> Dragon Link Kaiba -> Chaos (He used Chaos Emporer Dragon so it works) or ABC Pegasus -> Probably the Eyes restrict stuff. Prank Kids was a clever option. These are just a few I came up with lol
I've seen this concept like 100 times but I think you're the first to actually nail it. So many just pick the modern variants or go with whatever's relevant right now and shares a type with their OG deck. You actual thought about the themes and character parallels that make a deck feel like a character's signature.
@@TeamAPS no worries! Always enjoy your positivity and balanced takes! I don't know if you saw my comment pre edit but I was actually mistaken! The character I was thinking of plays battlewasps not beetroopers I didn't realise we had two bee like archetypes haha
He doesn't like/addicted to gambling. He is just very good at it, especially in clutch moments. Thats why he doesn't rely on them too much. He create his deck with ballance & some specific/questionable utilities in some condition (Kunai with chain, Rocket warrior) so he can save himself at those precarious situation...and gambling is just one kind of portions of those. He is a healthy gambler. Gambling don't destroy him, he destroy gambling (when he does it).
Joey is insecure in his dueling, because he compares himself to Yami Yugi and possibly Kaibas insults. He thinks he cant bridge the gap without relying on a bit of luck. Be he also tries to build a foundation with his other cards so that the luck based cards can make the difference. I think Tear would fit.
Loved to see this! My first guess for Kaiba was also Kashtira, but my experiences playing that deck make me wish he did not end up using that if he had the chance lol.
I really liked the Idea of Yugi on an adventure deck. Fits his style and the idea of a party of friends. Joey would fit super well with a flame swordsman infernoble build. I love the idea of Kaiba on Kashtira, it really fits his personality and his playstyle with crush cards virus. Pegasus on Amazement is a fun fit to his flamboyant style. Mai is 100% the trickiest to nail down if your not just giving her Harpies or amazons. I like the live twin idea. Mikanko is also a decent fit for her more tricky play styles she uses in duelist kingdom. Atem on branded was an deck I wasn’t immediately expecting but I see your points, it has the ability to play multiple different ways depending on how you configure your deck and draw. The Horus cards would also be a good fit for him
I could see Yami Bakura, Yami Marik or Bones using Memento they destroy themselves to use their effects, that one trap has 5+ negates which is good from just one card then you have their artistic theme being skeletal/phantom versions of older cards.
We both had the same base thought for the Yami Yugi deck, but I was thinking he would more specifically be on Branded Chimera. It goes into his use of Gazelle and Berfomet, while also not going too far into the Despia packages or Illusion monster pool.
I love your Atem and Kaiba pick, I could totally see Atem setting Albaz, Kaiba laughing at how pathetic Atem is for setting a monster against his Dragon link board. Then it all gets fused away for Lenatus
I feel Ishizu is a Labyrinth player. All 3 of the gravekeepers in Yu-Gi-Oh had a focus on traps, and Labyrinths general theming of an elegant trap castle fits Ishizu to a T. She can appear unassuming and gentle, but if you let her appearance decive you your toast.
man, even though I don't even play yugioh since my veeery casual days of gba games, duel links and master duel, I love just watching y'all talk about the TCG you're invested in, always a fun watch :) gotta say, this video opened my eyes to what sounds like some really fun archetypes that I didn't know existed! especially the ones mentioned during yugi's section about emulating traditional board games and fighting games, gonna end up downloading master duel again @_@
The first thing i thought of was "obviously yugi is playing vs soul, right?" I didnt even make the game connection, i just thought that all the teamplay themes, the surprise disruption despite weak looking boards, and the very protagonist-y look of caesar valius with his human-esque proportions and glowing blonde hair made for an easy choice.
6:20 Idk, I feel like in that one YGO championship character duel with Pegasus and Kaiba that he would end up using Wind-ups since Toys are his 2nd favorite thing besides cartoons. 8:55 Mai I think could go with Traptrix or Sky Strikers. Both are hardcore and both have their strengths in Mai’s personality. Traptrix alluding to her S1 persona of playing mind games with her opponent and end up fooling them. Sky Strikers being how she likes variants of her harpie ladies. So this would fit the bill 16:40 I’d also like to nominate Nephthys as deck for her since it’s also an Egyptian deity and would likely evoke the imagery of Ra for her.
Dragunity as one of Joey's runner up modern TCG decks fits him pretty well. What came to mind was a representation of his relationship with Mai Valentine, a Wind Winged-Beast user through the Harpies. Harpies also have a Pet Dragon which very loosely reference that Winged-Beast/Dragon relationship.
If we're talking about Kaiba playing dragons and debilitating his opponent, he would absolutely be puppet locking with branded. They're getting a new fusion that screams over the top anime card too
My pick for Kaiba is actually a Branded/Despia/Bystial pile he played Saggi and Peten so playing Comedy/Tradgey doesn't seem that off beat, his flair for the dramatic would 100% let him use the Theatre and he gets to use all of the cool dragon fusions including the blue eyes ones. There's also a theoretical line where he summons queridas, drops the atk of everything on the board, and then turns over Crush Card Virus using his now-0 atk monster
I don’t think Mai would associate with dragonmaids as it doesn’t come off as girlbossy and is more of a maid fantasy with a furry twist, I’d say lyrilusc would be good but idk if an anime character uses them
I enjoyed how you took into consideration for the personality traits of each character and tied a deck to that theme instead of just giving them powerful versions of other peoples decks. Honorable mention I could see Joey play is…..War rocks Those warriors personify his fighting spirit in the way that they will clash with anything and become stronger when fighting with their friends or for their friends.
Hey Paul, awesome video, you picked some creative choices i never thought of and wish i did. Also, side note since you dotn play duel links, but some events kinda hint at decks theyd make characters use. Bonz had a big event where its revealed his type of Spooks would be like Ghostricks now.
I’ve built a few decks so far based on characters using a few of their cards from the anime, but just building support around those key cards. Yugi for example, uses dark magician support but also has slifer and Gaia with it along with magical hats and old trap staples. Kaiba uses blue eyes/obelisk support, but has cards like fairy meteor crush and enraged battle ox. Still gets ok results but they are so much fun to use.
Funny how u had mako in the opening list but didnt mention him. As a mako fanatic who made a deck based solely on his love for the ocean i think he would play a white fish synchro deck or ghoti deck. Both have powerful cards and effects and are water types that mainly use fish/sea serpent/aqua types
Ok, hear me out, I know you were trying to think outside the box, BUT THERE IS NO WORLD WHERE KAIBA DOESNT HAVE A BLUE EYES DECK. Edit: THANK YOU FOR PIN!!! Edit: NOOOOO!!! Chat they unpinned my comment!!!!
Yo Paul, your transitions between each point you make are so smooth. You’re great speaking Lmfaooooooo I promise it’s a compliment, I’m not tryna sound sarcastic or anything. If you wrote a script for this video, it was very well written too.
I see Mai's decks as a reflection of her self-image and how she interacts with the world. Harpie Deck: Mai relied on tricks and feminine wiles to target male Duelists she saw as manipulable. Dominating them in more ways than one. Winning through humiliation and disdain towards her opponents. Amazoness Deck: Mai put her pride on the line to stand equal to the top ranked Duelist of the world. She discarded her tricks and showcased her actual skills. Winning through honor and sportsmanship.
Branded for Yami/Atem seems extremely appropriate. He already has like five archetypes (Dark Magician, Gaia, Black Luster soldier, Buster Blader, Kuriboh), so having a Deck with a collection of archetypes which all synergize would be a natural fit for a modern version of his Deck. Plus, all the big bosses have 2500 ATK.
I love that you didn't just go with the more updated meta versions of their original decks. A lot of thought went into the selections, I appreciate when people take the duelists' personalities into account.
Atem would be the Hours Deck. His last deck had kind of an egyptian themed to it with a few of his Spell cards and the God Cards so he would more go with the Egyptian Themed.
Yugi: the new Illusion stuff would really fit his love for mixed up magic Illusions and fusions, so I think he'd very likely play that new strategy in whatever variant is topping lately. Kaiba: Branded, He loves big dragons that hit hard, that's exactly what Branded does. Joey (Jonouchi): Definitely vanquish soul, he loves warriors that hit hard, maybe if you wanted to go down the gambling angle he could play Paleo Tearlaments! All gas and all gambling! Anzu: Skull Guardian/Lo's Prayer Ritual, it just fits Her and Yugi's relationship dynamic of punk butch and dependable femme. Atem: the new Horus stuff definitely, with the whole ancient Egyptian vibe it would literally be perfect for him. Odion: Eldlitch, it's arguably a modern incarnation of his trap-monster strategy, it would be literally perfect! Isis (Ishizu): definitely just the modern support version of her ancient sentinel deck, Mudora and Agido, Kelbek and Keldo are just too good to pass up on. Honda: Earth machine, enough said. Bakura: probably the newest version of the zombie world pile, with all the modern support. Bonz: Skull servant. It's too funny. Bandit Keith: Fire king tri-brigade he's an American, he loves blowing up everything. Pegasus: Maybe the new goblin deck? Goblins are like a famous MTG deck and the toon monsters are literally the way that they are BECAUSE of magic, it could be another stealth reference to them. EDIT: oh man Prank kids and Amazement are WAAAAY better as options for a modern Pegasus he would love those goofy strategies. Raphael: Infernoble knights, their love of equip spells is perfect for him. Mai: Floowandereeze. She loves her annoying winged beasts. Either that or Sky strikers because of the whole powerful women angle. Trying to think of good characters for Swordsoul and mathmech, maybe the armor guy... I'll edit with more if I think of any
Sky Strikers make a lot of sense for Mai. Strong female characters that have different variants of the same base creature to ravage the opponent in multiple ways.
Not bad choices, here's a few of mine. And just for fun, I decided to give some characters you didn't talk about new decks as well. Joey: I could see him going for Noble Knights, maybe Infernoble as well. They're a strong Warrior deck with lots of equips, two things he loves. Atem/Yugi: Mythical Beast/Endymion. Not too far off from the Dark Magician/Gazelle cards they used, plus it just feels so right. Ryo Bakura: I feel like the Adventurer Token cards fit better for him than Yugi, since his whole introduction arc in the manga was an RPG. Yami Bakura: Invoked feels like the perfect fit for him. Their whole aesthetic and lore gives me a very occultish vibe, and guess what he loves? Panik: Subterror is the closest I can think of for big, scary monsters. Plus, the Behemoth's gimmick of flipping themselves face down is sort of like the castle shrouding his monsters in darkness. Serenity: Purrely. She would totally fall in love with their cute aesthetic. Bonz: Ghostrick, based off of his event in Duel Links. Marik: Hieratic. Burning Abyss, since I feel like Dante's story of having to go through Hell and back to better himself matches his own.Alternatively, I could see him with Prophecy for the same reason with the Fool. Yami Marik: Hieratic. They're based off Egyptian deities, have a focus on tributing monsters (a theme perfect for someone with no regard for his underlings), and one of their monsters looks exactly like Ra in Sphere mode. Mai: Counter Fairies seem fitting for her somehow. Don't know why, though. Pegasus: Dragonmaids for sure. Cute and innocent at first, but then they transform into their true, terrifying forms, just like him.
I feel like Yugi is an underdog, and he would play decks that could be underestimated. But I think that tri-brigade might me a really good deck for him. They’re a group of monsters that don’t have a place, but they have each other- emphasizing Yugi’s care for others. Furthermore I think that zoodiac could also make sense by that same logic. All of these cards coming together to make each other stronger.
you could say that about a lot of decks, not enough criteria to just select one. Adding themes such as interests, personalities makes adventure a solid choice.
Lumis And Umbra? Stings? Panik? Tea? Tristan? Serenity? Duck Devlin? That Ninja Guy that Mai beat in BC torunament? Rebeca Hawkings? Dartz? Valon? Aliszer? Rafael? Zigfrig and his bro? Mako tsunami? Johny Steps? Mokuba? Shadi? hmm 😁
Stings: updated Silfer Deck Panik: Vandread or the new Fiendish archetype Tea: Exosisters or Master Hyperion Tristan: Six Samurai Duck: Mekk Knights since you interact with opponents columns for effects Rebecca: her strategy was beatdown and gy focused so by a stretch a Chaos deck Dartz: Updated Orichalcos with some of his never printed cards or Trimaid deck since it heavenly relies on field spells Rafael: Noble Knights since its reliant on equip spells Mako: obviously Mermails/ Sprials mix Mokuba: ABC/XYZ variant in honor of his brother Shadi: Updated King oblivion/ Queen Ruin deck
I can't be the only one thinking that Yami Marik is sadistic enough that he would enjoy playing Mystic Mine "But it's banned" That would just be an even BETTER reason for him to use it.
I'm guessing it's whatever the best decks are, and it cycles out every 3-5 months after a ban list. Give me that anime. They play with Snake-Eyes until Ash and Wanted Poster are suddenly limited and they are all scrambling to decide what good replacements there are, testing new engines, or if they should abandon it for a different deck altogether. Kinda like how it really is.
Personally I would give Marik Shaddoll because they are puppets, reference his millennium rod, they are mainly dark monsters and you can still your opponent's monsters which in a sense could be torturing them if you steal their boss
I've always kind of pictured Serenity (Joey's sister) either inheriting his fusions or using a charmer deck. For Mokuba, I can easily picture him playing Dark Scorpions
Adamancipator makes so much sense for Yugi's grandfather with him being an archeologist while the Adamancipator archetype is based on geologists (Im assuming just getting back into yugioh) the vibe is so there
I considered the archtype, the Earthbound Immortals for Bakura to more accurate to his darker side because he is bound by the limits of the ring until he finds a vessal and his obsession with sending duelist to the shadow realm is like a field spell to the mentally strong while the immortals are bound by there shackles until enough sacrifices are made to bring them out in the show and game for tributes with a field spell active aka there insignia.
I think you forgot about Téa Gardner, but I could totally see her playing a Madolche deck, not sure if there is anyone that plays it in the anime, if not then Vernusylph. They are cute and adorable, and a lot of them are fairy monsters, which fit how her deck was in the anime. It's still a good Archetype and it's getting some new support which makes me happy, being a Madolche player.
Dragunity fits joey more as it involves his ace red eyes as well as his love of warriors and how the deck evolves with the extra deck like how joey evolves by going to Vegas
I think Lab's whole "navigate a dungeon to escape" with the hero lady knight really also resembles Evil Bakura's introduction as the game master in the manga, where he ran the cursed tabletop game. On that note adventure could really be the deck that Bakura himself decides to use since his true gaming love is tabletop rpgs!
This video was super cool. I really agree about Yami Yugi, and now I can totaly see Kaiba playing Drytron! I also agree a lot with Pegasus, but I would include Plunder Patrol on his possible decks, for rememebering his style of monster hinding inside other cards plus the aesthetic of plunder cards.. For Mai, I really think Mikanko feets her character, strong females that can challenge the most fearsome monsters, supported by very strong spell cards, like in his old harpies deck.
Drytron can also play Chaos Max even if it isn't the most optimal choice lol, and the new Drytron boss monster can actually Cheat Chaos Max from the deck. I'm personally of the opinion he's more of a Drytron player than anything else
An option for Marik Ishtar (as opposed to Yami Marik) could be a modern Egyptian God deck (as was his goal in the Battle City arc), Nephthys, or Hieratics. Hieratics have sun/sky dragons, similar to the two God cards Marik controlled. Nephthys was a goddess in Egyptian mythology, similar to Horus for Ishizu. I feel like this could work for Marik after his redemption, while Hieratics/EG would work pre-redemption. Edit: I completely forgot about Hieratic Seal of the Sun Dragon Overlord, which resembles the anime version of the Winged Dragon of Ra's sphere mode in a couple of aspects, such as the lack of ATK, DEF, and an effect.
If this was expanded to include the spin offs, I feel like Branded might be a better fit for Jaden. Basically every monster can fuse with each other. Albaz is just a monster Super Poly. And there’s both an innocent side (pure Albaz) and a dark side (Despia), with the deck working together the best when both are together (like Jaden and Yubel or Jaden and the Supreme King). I just feel like Branded is basically E Hero + Evil Hero is they were dragons.
I think one thing that's understated about Joey is how much he relies on gambling cards throughout the anime. I don't think he wins a duel without some sort of gamble card. It's kinda ironic because he hates his father who is an alcoholic and a gambler, though they don't really talk about him much. I don't know any archetypes that really fit that playstyle today though. Good picks overall! I especially thought Vaylantz with the Paradox brothers was gold.
I can see yugi playing herald agents, kaiba playing chaos dragon link, joey playing lightsworn and definitely infirnoble, marik playing lair/labyrinth, bakura rocking dark worlds, mai playing sky striker, Rex playing evolsaur Dino or true king dino, weevil playing traptrix, bandit Keith playing abc, makko playing sharks, or paleo toads, ishizu playing voiceless voice, espa roba playing PSY-frames, bones playing vampire or doomking zombie world and odion playing swordsoul
Since you picked Adventure Token for Yugi I could totally see Yami using a Generaider deck, since Generaider is heavily inspired by D&D and it's dynamic of having the Dungeon Master place bosses for the players to fight, the 2 decks could be seen as Yami and Yugi playing a game together, where Yugi is the adventurer and Yami is in charge of guiding him through an epic dungeon full of bosses and challenges + the main monster of Generaider is a Dark Spellcaster, you could see Harr as the Dark Magician stand-in of the deck lol
Ehh, both Generaider & Runick are control deck that are also often associated with stun floodgates. Both Yugi & Atem feels more in-line with more versatile midrange deck (Also writing duel around control deck is not as fun IF the protagonist the one using it, since it's the same strategy everytime.)

Plus Flamberge is literally BE retrain.
Or the new upcoming Tenpai dragon deck. Sheer raw power.
Thought the same, and for Atem I was thinking on the Chaos Synchro monsters, Chaos Angel, Archfiend, all that, since originally Atem/Yugi's deck was very light and dark focused mirroring the darker nature of atem and the light-heartedness of yugi
Kaiba would play Branded, don't even pretend he wouldn't laugh in your face while summoning a Gimmick Puppet Nightmare to your board
@@Neon-yj9xw Kaiba would consider that play underhanded and disgraceful
With Espa Roba, I was thinking Psy-Frames more than anything. It's centered around Driver, which is reminiscent of a deck centered around Jinzo and "predicting the future" ties in well with how Psy-Frames play in response to what your opponent does.
Oh my God that's so much better now I'm angry I didn't think of it...!
Oh, that's a great idea! I was kind of thinking about "Prediction Princess" despite them being fairies, but Psy-Frame feels a lot more fitting
Considering how she dueled Joey in S1 i like the idea of Mai using Aromages
Wait, isn't one of her abilities in Duel Links Aromage strategy? We have a winner!
She upgrades into sky strikers later. Fits how she only uses 3 monsters in her deck. Lmao.
I approve of this message
Totally forgot this as an option, but it fits her early gimmick to a T!
@@TeamAPS I think there's someone else in 5D's who would make better use of the aromage archetype considering its gardening theme.
@@MercuryA2000 TGS Anime?
@@MercuryA2000 I saw that one too. It was super disappointing, so I’m glad someone made the video I actually wanted to watch from the beginning
Honestly if you want to give marik a torture deck just give him a stall burn deck with infuriating handtraps
He'd probably torture people by playing a stun deck. Haha. Just like he had Vengeful Bog Spirit back in the day, he'd probably do similar stunts like with the Gozen cards.
He'd play time-tearing morganite stun with burn
Marik is on mystic mine
And tons of floodgates.
Na he'd just play kashtira
You should take this concept and do a series of duel videos where the Yu-gi-oh characters use these modern decks in a revamped duelist kingdom, battle city, etc.
Second this! Would love to see this
@@TheClearSummer Third this
I can imagine that one scene in manga where Kaiba said that Yugi deck are predictable as glass box is redone by him flipping D. Barrier to stop him from fusing lol
4th this, this would be absolutely amazing. I want to see Mr Doomking Balerdroch get screentime, Zombie World is fun.
This actually sounds pretty fun
Atem with Branded would actually be amazing. Not just for the reasons you mentioned, but also because it's a very protagonist-friendly deck. Since there are so many different variations on Branded, Yugi can keep the core of it while swapping out monsters or archetypes throughout the series to show progression, or to counter specific opponents.
Weevil would 100% be a sweaty Runick player
Weevil banishes cards off the top of his opponent's deck, into the ocean.
Weevil is the kind of player who would first play Thunder Dragon, then Eldlich Stun in the rematch, and after 3 years timeskip, he would play Spright.
Edit: His boss monster is Maxx C
Nah he'd probably play Inzectors. It just works to well. Esepecially considering his name in the original japanese. Insector Haga.
It's in character Weevil would play Beetrooper.
Who hurt you
I could see Mai playing a pure Diabellestar/Sinful Spoils deck, since Mai and Diabellestar are both rogue types that play hard and chase that dollar. Then maybe she splashes Flamberge as the new "Harpy's pet Dragon".
Additionally, Ishizu might like Prediction Princess, since they're mysterious monsters that flip down everything and can hinder the opponent.
prediction princess was used by a anime character which he forbid himself from doing
@@DarkSymphony777 Ahh ok
This is my pick. That kinda stuff is running all over MD right now and it fits Mai pretty well.
Mai is a Simorgh player, cmon
That's a good call!
oh yeah tia would 2000% play purrely.
it's all about cute monsters friendship and happy memories.
she will also have a Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS because yami gave her one just in case(which she will use on joey to win)
Very good call! I considered them as well, but thought it was a bit too "Trap heavy" for her style. However I think your explanation completely changed my mind. Between this and one other comment, I'm now torn between Labrynth and Mikanko for her!
So if we had the anime in your version Joey would rock up with a deck using the knight lady. Cool.
@@Mrryn
I was actually thinking Snake eyes would be a good deck for Bakura. As the witch’s journey to get the treasures mirrors his own quest for the millennium items.
He probaly will play runick stun
He want torture his Opponent after all:]]]
Okay, but here's the important question: WOULD Yami Yugi puppet lock his opponent?
(My guess would be yes, if you really pissed him off. This would be the modern equivalent of what he did to Weevil, where instead of attacking even after the game is over, he'd just puppet lock you turn after turn while refusing to finish you off)
I totally agree with this assessment lol
I feel like he would use ra’s disciple since it is related to the egc’s
Yami Yugi with Branded sounds interesting. I also play the deck myself on TCG and I always see new things I can do and it really relies on your decision making skills and so many things work with it. I personally like having Dark Magician in it because the deck can make Dragoon which is a TCG thing
Def with a dark dragoon.
YES! That was my first thought when it came to Pegasus but it was used in Arc-V by Sora.
Daredevil is a surprisingly strong one.
Performapal and them would rock.
It’s an anime deck that was used by a character doesn’t fit the brief
4:21 Kashtira feels like a deck gozaburo would use if he took duel monsters seriously. It’s he not Kaiba who wanted to rule the world and would burn it down if he couldn’t.
Kaiba - Mannadium, Tenpai, Kashtira
Yugi - Yubel, Branded, Chimera
Joey - Snake-eyes Fire King, Runick, Unchained, Fiend Smith
Joey would definitely always forget he skips his battle phase if he used Runick though 😆
I know it’s a lot but a tournament with those decks would be soo cool each of the members of team aps choose two decks out of a hat and go at it
For Mai I would think either the Twins or even Sky Striker, especially since Sky Striker is in essence one of 2 girls in a Mech Suits, while also keeping her high flying aesthetic of the Harpies, and the synergistic properties of the Amazoness Monsters.
In addition, a case could be made for the trickier equip spells being vaguely reminiscent of the tricks she'd play in early duels
For Solomon Muto, I'd make a case for Memento!
Love the writing in this, rather than a simple discussion I felt nostalgic hearing these concepts and other archetype are interesting to hear about too
Great one brotha
I have thought about this before and came up with a few
Yugi/Atem -> Endymion (DARK Spellcaster like DM so it makes sense)
Ishizu -> Ishizu Tear lol or maybe Ishizu Loghtsworn?
Joey -> Dragon Link
Kaiba -> Chaos (He used Chaos Emporer Dragon so it works) or ABC
Pegasus -> Probably the Eyes restrict stuff.
Thank you! I also realized apparently a 5Ds character plays Machina, so Keith might be stuck with Infinitracks after all.
@@TeamAPS no worries! Always enjoy your positivity and balanced takes! I don't know if you saw my comment pre edit but I was actually mistaken! The character I was thinking of plays battlewasps not beetroopers I didn't realise we had two bee like archetypes haha
I would say Joey would like tear cus he likes those gamble cards and tear milling is basically gambling lmao
Spiral would be better tbh
Joey is insecure in his dueling, because he compares himself to Yami Yugi and possibly Kaibas insults. He thinks he cant bridge the gap without relying on a bit of luck. Be he also tries to build a foundation with his other cards so that the luck based cards can make the difference. I think Tear would fit.
Loved to see this! My first guess for Kaiba was also Kashtira, but my experiences playing that deck make me wish he did not end up using that if he had the chance lol.
Fire video! I loved to hear your opinions! Also I think your Yugi Muto-Adventure token was soooo smart and amazing fit!
I also would consider Traptrix for Weevil and Odion
Traptrix for Weevil, Labrynth for Odion. lol
Well thinking about it, since Branded was chosen for Atem, it would make sense for Despia to be Arcana’s deck since its part of the Branded Lore
man, even though I don't even play yugioh since my veeery casual days of gba games, duel links and master duel, I love just watching y'all talk about the TCG you're invested in, always a fun watch :)
gotta say, this video opened my eyes to what sounds like some really fun archetypes that I didn't know existed! especially the ones mentioned during yugi's section about emulating traditional board games and fighting games, gonna end up downloading master duel again @_@
This is really the way these videos should be done. Everyone always just says - They have gotten support and retrained. Doesn't really work. Great vid
The first thing i thought of was "obviously yugi is playing vs soul, right?"
I didnt even make the game connection, i just thought that all the teamplay themes, the surprise disruption despite weak looking boards, and the very protagonist-y look of caesar valius with his human-esque proportions and glowing blonde hair made for an easy choice.
So this would fit the bill
16:40 I’d also like to nominate Nephthys as deck for her since it’s also an Egyptian deity and would likely evoke the imagery of Ra for her.
I'm totally with those picks. No lie, I completely forgot Nephthys even existed when I was thinking of decks 😅
Pegasus would use Ghostricks in my opinion with heavy trap focus. Needle Ceiling turnaround seems like something happening for sure.
They're getting a new fusion that screams over the top anime card too
My pick for Kaiba is actually a Branded/Despia/Bystial pile
he played Saggi and Peten so playing Comedy/Tradgey doesn't seem that off beat, his flair for the dramatic would 100% let him use the Theatre and he gets to use all of the cool dragon fusions including the blue eyes ones. There's also a theoretical line where he summons queridas, drops the atk of everything on the board, and then turns over Crush Card Virus using his now-0 atk monster
I don’t think Mai would associate with dragonmaids as it doesn’t come off as girlbossy and is more of a maid fantasy with a furry twist, I’d say lyrilusc would be good but idk if an anime character uses them
I believe one of the girl characters from Arc V used Lyrilusc, but I thought of them myself, along with Tri-Brigade.
I like that I guessed a lot of these picks. Makes me happy that I know a bunch of these characters pretty well as well as the game itself
I didn't expect to enjoy this video way more than I should have. Do more of this in the future please
I enjoyed how you took into consideration for the personality traits of each character and tied a deck to that theme instead of just giving them powerful versions of other peoples decks. Honorable mention I could see Joey play is…..War rocks
Those warriors personify his fighting spirit in the way that they will clash with anything and become stronger when fighting with their friends or for their friends.
Hey Paul, awesome video, you picked some creative choices i never thought of and wish i did. Also, side note since you dotn play duel links, but some events kinda hint at decks theyd make characters use. Bonz had a big event where its revealed his type of Spooks would be like Ghostricks now.
You know what? That totally fits and I just forgot them!
Yeah for whatever reason I forgot to write him into the script. 😅 But you're totally right about the deck itself.
@@Imokoamaru white fish and ghoti really compliment each other. I learned that in the recent master duel water/wind duels
@@deuntaethomas7437 I'd say the shark deck fits him perfectly but there's another duelist who rightfully claims it perfectly

I appreciate that!
Nah, I know if Yami Marik was playing in 2024 he would play stun.
He would be a mystic mind player
Thanks, now I have to think of the horror of kaiba running drytron/herald.
Shame on you for forgetting this legendary duelist: Johnny Steps!
Joking aside, awesome video! Very fun
I love this so much but what deck would he play.
Since his original deck is music related....due to Musician King
Orcust
@@michaelabner9436 Ah but since Johnny preference is more modern music, I think Symphonic Warrior fit him better
Mean Horus?
Horus Atem vs Gravekeeper burn Marik in 5000 BC was 🔥
He can also use black Horus lvs too for the Egyptian theme
The moment Paul said Yugi's deck would be Adventurer, I knew I was in for a hell of a video
I'll edit with more if I think of any
I really can't stress enough how much of a PERFECT match Evil Eye is for Bakura😍
This was Such and well thought out video.!! Great job
Sky Strikers make a lot of sense for Mai. Strong female characters that have different variants of the same base creature to ravage the opponent in multiple ways.
8:49 For Mai, I thought Sky Striker. A deck about a strong, independent woman trying to save a dystopian world.
As soon as I heard Horus I nearly died of death
Bakura = Burning Abyss + Necrofear
Fun video concept
Mokuba?
Shadi?
hmm 😁
Stings: updated Silfer Deck
Panik: Vandread or the new Fiendish archetype
Tea: Exosisters or Master Hyperion
Tristan: Six Samurai
Duck: Mekk Knights since you interact with opponents columns for effects
Rebecca: her strategy was beatdown and gy focused so by a stretch a Chaos deck
Dartz: Updated Orichalcos with some of his never printed cards or Trimaid deck since it heavenly relies on field spells
Rafael: Noble Knights since its reliant on equip spells
Mako: obviously Mermails/ Sprials mix
Mokuba: ABC/XYZ variant in honor of his
brother
Shadi: Updated King oblivion/ Queen Ruin deck
Thank god someone remembered Johnny steps
The is probably the most interesting version of the DM characters using modern day decks
is it not obvious what mai would play ... its Lyrilusc
Fr tho, just like harpies!!!
I can't be the only one thinking that Yami Marik is sadistic enough that he would enjoy playing Mystic Mine
"But it's banned"
That would just be an even BETTER reason for him to use it.
I think u need a hug
Thats yugioh Structures
I absolutely love every single pick you mentioned. Great video, it was entertaining!
Dragunity would be fitting for Mai imo. It fits her dragon and winged beast theme.
Personally I can see Marik running something like Runick Stun+Burn. You look me in the eyes and tell me that deck isn't a legal torture method.
Personally I would give Marik Shaddoll because they are puppets, reference his millennium rod, they are mainly dark monsters and you can still your opponent's monsters which in a sense could be torturing them if you steal their boss
For Rex Raptor i am not sure if this would be an option but i am gonna say it. Rex could play a Dinowrestler deck.
I've always kind of pictured Serenity (Joey's sister) either inheriting his fusions or using a charmer deck. For Mokuba, I can easily picture him playing Dark Scorpions
I come from the future, BK has a new metalmorph deck and you have a new suscriber, I love this kind of videos
Adamancipator makes so much sense for Yugi's grandfather with him being an archeologist while the Adamancipator archetype is based on geologists (Im assuming just getting back into yugioh) the vibe is so there
Marik would play Cauldron of the Old Man Burn with a heavy stall component. Plenty of time for despair, plenty of time for monologuing.
I can see Mai using TrapTrix as she liked to lure her opponents into a false sense of security first before completely beating them out
I considered the archtype, the Earthbound Immortals for Bakura to more accurate to his darker side because he is bound by the limits of the ring until he finds a vessal and his obsession with sending duelist to the shadow realm is like a field spell to the mentally strong while the immortals are bound by there shackles until enough sacrifices are made to bring them out in the show and game for tributes with a field spell active aka there insignia.
Marik would definitely be playing pure stun, no doubt.
If Yami is using Generaider, then Yugi would be more fitting using Runnick instead
@@michaelabner9436 I never dabbled into Runnicks so I don't know much about the deck flow of it, gonna check it out and maybe try my hand at using it
Ehh, both Generaider & Runick are control deck that are also often associated with stun floodgates. Both Yugi & Atem feels more in-line with more versatile midrange deck (Also writing duel around control deck is not as fun IF the protagonist the one using it, since it's the same strategy everytime.)
