Absolute magic! The voice of voices, a light like this comes to earth so rarely, but as long as we have his recordings to listen to, he will continue to shine. Many thanks for a great post.
These films are priceless. The always great Mr. Marty Robbins, and the best group to ever sing a song, the Glaser Brothers with the ever amazing Tompall. LOVE them! Thanks for sharing this piece of music history. This is country music before country music was crap!
That's amazing for a live performance, they all had some great talent, very professional! Thanks, I never heard much of Marty Robbins (I was not raised on Country music other then some Hank Williams), just a little and the more I hear, the more impressed I am! Now I have to see the movie! LOL.
Man...this was from about 1957 or 59; I don't remember which. Martin David Robinson, aka. Marty Robbins, and The Glaser Brothers, at their finest. Modern day consumers aren't interested in this kind of entertainment. They are dressed neatly, no tats or piercings, no booty in the face. Simple, melodic harmonies. Wonderfully entertaining, totally respectable. Gone, but not forgotten. Rest in Peace, Marty. Your legacy lives on...
On this day in 1959 {February 11th} the Warner Bros. movie 'The Hanging Tree' had its world premiere in New York City... Two weeks earlier on January 27th, 1959 the "The Hanging Tree" by Marty Robbins entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at #99; and six weeks later on March 16th, 1959 it peaked at #38 {for 1 week} and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #15 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart... Between 1952 and 1975 he had ninety-one songs make the Hot Country Singles chart; forty-five made the Top 10 with an amazing sixteen reaching #1, "El Paso" was his biggest hit, it reaching #1 on both the Top 100 and Hot Country Singles chart... Martin David Robinson passed away on December 8th, 1982 at the young age of 57... May he R.I.P
One of my favourite movie theme songs. Flawless performance, too. There's such a clarity and purity to Marty's vocals--something which seems to be lacking from many modern singers. He's a class act.
@frac889 Yes, Marty had a quadruple bypass surgery, but passed away shortly after while still in the hospital. I still remember to this day hearing about it on the radio that he had gone in for the surgery and then of his passing right after. I came "this close" to getting to see him perform live in October 1982 in Edmonton, Alberta (with Wilf Carter), right after his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, but then other circumstances prevented it & there was no "next time" to see him
One didn't have to be a country western fan to hear Marty Robbins in the 1960's. He had cross over hits. I didn't listen to country music, and I was--am--a Marty Robbins' fan.
@gtakid13 No, Marty was only 57 when he passed away (born Sept 26, 1925). He died due to complications from a triple bypass. He had a heart attack, went into the hospital, they did a triple bypass, and came through that, but a day or two later he passed away, on Dec 8, 1982. I'll never forget it. :-(
GRADY MARTIN brought me here , that's the guy playing the guitar behind MARTY , i wanted to see the man who did that scintillating guitar playing on the ELPASO recording . one of the many geniuses behind many of the songs we know and love , but never get the recognition they deserve .
Don't forget about how great Jack Pruett was. He was the guitarist who was with Marty from beginning to end. His style was silky smooth, different but just as great as Grady Martin.
I came to town to search for gold And I brought with me a memory And I seemed to hear the night winds cry Go hang your dreams on the hanging tree Your dreams of love that will never be Hang your faded dreams on the hanging tree. I searched for gold, and I found my gold And I found a girl who loved just me and I wished that I could love her, too But I left my heart on the hanging tree, Left my heart with a memory And my faded dreams on the hanging tree. Now there were men who craved my gold And meant to take my gold from me Where man is gone he needs no gold So they carried me to the hanging tree To join my dreams and a memory Yes, they carried me to the hanging tree. To really live you must almost die And it happened just that way with me They took my gold and set me free And I walked away from the hanging tree I walked away from the hanging tree And my own true love, she walked with me. i went to tenerife for a hol years ago and this was one of about 10 songs the local radio station had. We walked in the hotel room and theres this big grill thing and a switch we thought was air conditioning so it was turned full on though nothing seemed to happen. Came back and heard music blasting away. Ignorant sods lol It was me with the air conditioning
No sir I'am not an American but that's where my love of music lies, country music that is,when I was 6 years old I always sang along with all the great country stars used to hear on the radio, but to day what they call country is just a lot of garbage, I never watch today's country music on TV or buy the CD's I just sing and listen to all the old stuff I have which is about 600 karaoke songs which I love to sing, such as Hank Williams.Johnny cash, waylon Jennings.
what a voice this man had. he could sing anything.
One of the greatest singers America ever had. Thank you, Marty for every song that you sang. Sometimes I just feel this way.
Beautiful voice with perfect pitch and fantastic phrasing and vibrato --on Live TV! They should make a movie about his life, with all his songs.
Robbins was an old fashioned conservative. It's unlikely they would make a movie about his life in the 2020s without it being some awful piece.
Absolute magic! The voice of voices, a light like this comes to earth so rarely, but as long as we have his recordings to listen to, he will continue to shine. Many thanks for a great post.

Wonderful vocals in perfect pitch. It´s hard to believe they did it live
at TV. Super !
hanging tree was a great movie

Rest in Peace, Marty. Your legacy lives on...
15 year old here, and I totally agree with you!
You are so right. They don't appreciate real class.
Dude
Just because that is what’s made don’t mean it’s what the people want
1959. I saw the movie on my 8th birthday

Classic song, classic singer, classic harmony.
"Marty Robbins"
Just so Amazing, wonderful voice.
This was and is some of the finest music ever performed. Thanks for posting!
marty's voice is a gift
One of my favourite movie theme songs. Flawless performance, too. There's such a clarity and purity to Marty's vocals--something which seems to be lacking from many modern singers. He's a class act.
The Late, Great Marty Robbins! It don't get any better. Thanks for the posting lucian33ABC
@traceykhouston
There will never be another Marty! Always forever the best of country.
Marty Robbins was fantastic
This song is a metaphor about walking away from a covetous life. A life we all thought we craved. Its particularly apt at this time.
What a voice !!!!!!!! Pure silk country crooner
This was also featured in the movie and i have this on an old 45.
The best country singer of all time
MY FAVORITE WESTERN
STARRING GARY COOPER.
MUSIC,performed by a genius

Wow.....thanks for this one! I was only 12 at the time when I heard it for the first time......way back in 1956......

Great voice. It was pure, clear and sounded as good live as on a studio recording. Sadly, a talent lost to most modern "artists".

Today, Dec 8, 2009, marks the anniversary of Marty's death on Dec 8th, 1982. What a great loss. RIP. Gone but not forgotten.
Great song, thanks for the video
Great song, great singer and a great group singing back-up; Tompall and the Glazier Brothers.
Marty was one of the best vocalists ever.
GRADY MARTIN brought me here , that's the guy playing the guitar behind MARTY , i wanted to see the man who did that scintillating guitar playing on the ELPASO recording . one of the many geniuses behind many of the songs we know and love , but never get the recognition they deserve .
Yes he was great.
Also played lead guitar on many well known rockabilly numbers.
Don't forget about how great Jack Pruett was. He was the guitarist who was with Marty from beginning to end. His style was silky smooth, different but just as great as Grady Martin.
@rgolaf
Well said! One of the all time best in country music. A great talent lost so soon.
I came to town to search for gold
And I brought with me a memory
And I seemed to hear the night winds cry
Go hang your dreams on the hanging tree
Your dreams of love that will never be
Hang your faded dreams on the hanging tree.
I searched for gold, and I found my gold
And I found a girl who loved just me
and I wished that I could love her, too
But I left my heart on the hanging tree,
Left my heart with a memory
And my faded dreams on the hanging tree.

Where man is gone he needs no gold
So they carried me to the hanging tree
To join my dreams and a memory
Yes, they carried me to the hanging tree.

And it happened just that way with me
They took my gold and set me free
And I walked away from the hanging tree
I walked away from the hanging tree
And my own true love, she walked with me.

Is the tree of life, new life for me
The tree of hope, new hope for me,
The tree of love, new love for me,
The hanging tree'the hanging tree'the hanging tree.
oh memories love

This reminds me of my dad
I nearly agree with you! - I think there were four greats - Don Gibson, Marty Robbins, Eddy Arnold and Hank Snow - all gone.
And Jim Reeves - the man With the Million-dollar Voice.
i went to tenerife for a hol years ago and this was one of about 10 songs the local radio station had.
We walked in the hotel room and theres this big grill thing and a switch we thought was air conditioning so it was turned full on though nothing seemed to happen.

A forgotten classic. Where was this performance filmed? This is the first time I've seen it preformed.
Frankie Laine did great version of this in 1961.
Frankie was the cowboy ballad king.

Forget whether this is a song made from a movie, or if the movie was based on the film, maybe a short story too, maybe.
1971
who are the backup singers?
The wonderfully-talented Glaser Brothers: Jim, Chuck and big brother Thomas Paul
I googled "Hanging tree", and accidentally found the Hunger games one too.
Is this the song that is supposed to be in the hunger games ????
@KIWI897 LOL my friend! marty pisses with us! :)
Was Bobby Sykes one the greatest acoustic guitar players? Wow, what a difference in this drummer to Bill Martinez.
Maria Schells beste Rolle
This recording doesnt do his voice justice.
I meant 1955
HEY Folks, ENJOY whatever version you favour, No need to get NASTY about it.
